      David Lynch hates the movie too. He is on records, multiple times, stating that he started "selling out" already during the writing of the film. It's not as simple as the film was ruined in the editing room. It is the studios fault for imposing such a ridiculous runtime limit on Lynch, but no matter how much the film is re-edited, the material to make the film the way Lynch wanted to simply does not exist, and never has.
      But Lynch is happy that you liked it :)

      It depends on which cut you saw. The theatrical cut was shit to be honest. There are so many better cuts. I swear though, this movie has as many cuts, if not more than Blade Runner. Each of them fill in blanks that are missing from the theatrical and while the movie itself veers away from the books in a number of areas, the missing information/scenes made it a 1000x better than what people saw in theaters.

If you hadn't read the book then you wouldn't know that they were Paul's "sons" as he was responsible for them since he killed their father. They were there with the 100 strongest warriors to learn the weirding way because it was their place to be where Paul was. Then at the end they are waiting with their mother as Paul comes down the stairs. One of them is even holding a pug as a symbol of House Atreides.

    Little piece of trivia: The original movie I saw in the theater was 3hrs 10min long, and had a 15 minute intermission to stretch your legs. These scenes are from that long version. I believe there is also an extended version that is 2hrs 57 min and another that was 2hrs 15min. They gave you a pamphlet to interpret the terminology,etc when you went in. Since I hadn't read Dune yet I couldn't follow it, my husband who had read it, loved it. After reading the book, I came to love it too.

      @@Argumemnon Lynch's ego got in the way of everything he did. I saw this in the theater and the theatrical was awful. It had obviously been cut down from a much longer movie. @@KenS1267 What are you talking about? Lynch WANTED a much longer movie. It was all Dino De Laurentis, the producer's fault. He took control away from Lynch at almost ever step and would let him make the film he wanted, not let him cut it the way he wanted.

    • @KenS1267
      @KenS1267 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Derek_Smallshorts Even the uncut scenes are awful and are not even remotely the Dune novel. I know Lynch has made a ton of excuses over the years but he directed the actors and he's responsible for the way they delivered the dialogue. He was the one who edited the three hour "finished" cut down to the two hour theatrical release. Even the "extended" version is still a terrible movie.
      But there is really no doubt that David Lynch's ego was a huge issue with everything he did. There's a reason he's made so little and worked less and less over the years. Since Twin Peaks he's made 4 movies in 30 years, the last in 2006 being such a bizarre ego piece no one else would produce or distribute it.

    Let's be honest, Dune is too big for a single movie that would be popular with a mainstream audience. Satisfying a modern crowd will require an artful touch,
    Even a two part (2+ hour each) version would barely cover the first book satisfactorily. Just understanding all the tech and power structure in the first book would swamp some attention spans. Audience attention and interest would waver after you skip through time, first in decades (then centuries in later books) if Dune became a complete film series.
    There are paradigm shifts in key factions in power, personal abilities and motivation throughout the book series. I'm unsure if a mainstream (movie or TV) audience could keep up if it got that big.

      Paul is attempting to assimilate in to a culture whose rituals and customs he largely knows nothing about. Not an easy task. You see this when he hesitates and looks to his mother before deciding to accept the water. He has no idea what the "correct" specific social customs in their society are but he does have a general understanding of what type of people they are. When he walks by Hara his options are to either avert his stare or look her directly in the eyes. He chooses the latter, probably because he assumed averting his eyes might look weak or disrespectful to a Fremen. Staring a woman down until SHE looks away is an alpha behavior. Given what Paul does know about Fremen culture, and everything he has seen of it since entering their ranks, it was probably better to risk erring on the side of being too alpha in that situation rather than too beta.

Let’s say the fremen are chronically dehydrated and are 60% water then Jamis was only 121 pounds. Perhaps Frank Herbert intended for them to be small people.
