      @@TheAxtonman The next two books should be read to appreciate the flow of the story, but TL;DR it's detailed in Dune Messiah (especially) and Children of Dune that the Fremen legions from Arrakis and the Fremen Fedaykin death troops spread out to bring Paul's jihad to the rest of the populated planets in the Imperium, a war that kills ~61 billion people. This movie diverges dramatically from what actually happens in the next two books because "peace" and "love" were not what Paul was after, and he falls into despair over what he caused and became. Paul is a messiah for about 5 minutes before everything goes to shit with his name on it.
      Oh, he does not cause the rain either. Precipiation eventually happens on Arrakis but it's not because he's a literal god.

    • @deanfirnatine7814
      @deanfirnatine7814 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I do not think the book purists caused the film to fail, average movie goers did not get a more intellectual film like this in its era just over their head most wanted dumbed down entertainment, plus Hollywood execs forced massive cuts to the film which really hurt its story and the marketing was terrible compared to other high dollar films, so it was a combo.

      @@deanfirnatine7814 ... That's true, it was originally planned to either be a trilogy or 2 parts. I'm certain of the 2 parts though, which was discussed when Ridley Scott was the hired director in the late 1970's during early screen writing, a few years before Lynch. Today, the Villeneuve version gives redemption to that 2-parter concept to help flesh out the novel twice as long as the Lynch version. However, I might have preferred a trilogy, but space them out 1 year apart instead of the normal 2 years. Having read the novel in 1983, there is just so much detail to get through, but I do "get it" that a normal viewing audience would probably get bored with the religion & politics in the story as well. It would take a really good script & director to keep the audience watching without confusion or yawning.

      @@moffch4319 ... Well the other thing too is Lynch thought he was getting another actor named Patrick Stewart, not this Brit. There was probably no more time to cast another actor as they had to keep production schedule going. Aldo Ray did "look" the part of Gurney, wise, stocky & surly. Perhaps thats why they got Josh Brolin to play the part, because he looks like a mean SOB since Gurney is a military/combat leader. The problem with Dune 1984 is Universal Studios cut it down to 2 hours. Not good for a 400-page novel. It was originally planned as either trilogy or 2 parts (2 parts I'm certain), back when Ridley Scott was hired in the late 1970's during early screen writing. After the cut, it was honed down to 3 hours, then again finally to 2. This really disappointed Lynch & he had to cut a lot out of the script & hence it just turned into a mess for him. He disowned the movie in later years after all the flack he & the movie took. Today, the Villeneuve version gets to redeem that 2-part concept, which is really more reasonable for a long book, although maybe a trilogy may have been more respectful to the length of the story.

      Yeah, both in Dune and in real life... it seems the human solution to "bringing peace" is to cause more loss of life than existed before, all in the name of "right". It's amazing how many people are so certain they're "right"... and are willing to kill for it. Every time I read Dune or see one of the movies, that point stands out above everything else. Are Paul and Leto the heroes... or are they worse than their predecessors? Although Dune is science fiction, it very accurately portrays the atmosphere of real life: several "houses" all controlling the lives of their citizens... or else.

    “A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then, that is is the year 10191. The known universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam the Fourth, my father. In this time, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel. The Spacing Guild and its navigators, who the spice has mutated over 4000 years, use the orange spice gas, which gives them the ability to fold space. That is, travel to any part of the universe without moving.
    Because the Guild controls all interplanetary travel, they are the highest power in the Universe. The Spice also plays a very secret role in the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, of which I am a part. The sisterhood has been interfering with the marriages, and the children thereof, of the great Houses of the Universe, cleverly intermixing one bloodline with another to form the Kwisatz Haderach, a super being.
    They plan to control this super being and use his powers for their own selfish purposes. The breeding plan has been carried out in a strict manner for 90 generations. The goal of the super being is in sight. But now, so close to the prize, a Bene Gesserit woman, Jessica, the bound concubine of Duke Leto Atreides, who has been ordered to bear only daughters, has given birth to a son.
    Oh, yes. I forgot to tell you. The spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe. A desolate, dry planet with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Fremen, who have long held a prophecy that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom. The planet is Arrakis, also known as Dune.”

      I don't know why there was so much hate for this movie? There have been remakes (sci-fi channel) but none really measured up to this version. Frank Herbert gave us a dark, brooding vision of the universe whose denizens had endured endless wars, religious fanaticism, and technological stagnation due to the dangers of AI. I wished they could make better renditions of Herbert's books like Heretics of Dune and Children of Dune. But this version I have on Laserdisc and it's my favorite, no CGI and tasteful special effects.

    Herbert's Dune was one of those monumental epics that have always proven so difficult to bring to the screen. At the time this version was filmed and with the technology of the day this was a well made film, an excellent cast of actors and despite some odd changed to the plot still rather faithful to Herbert. That said it had it's flaws but still considering the vast size of the time frame involved and the vast scope of space, worlds and characters in the original story enough of Herbert's ideas are still here to make an impressive film, far better than many have claimed. After so many years it is still worth watching. I have not seen the new remake but just from the short clips I've seen there is one point that glares at me, an issue I have with far too many films these days. The lead actor chosen to play Paul is another in a long line of whimpy, skinny, pretty boy types who just does not have the presence or physical stature to portray a character such as Paul Atreides. Kyle McLachlan was of the same type and one of the thing I hated about the older film. Even though with time he became a much better actor it's too late now to fix. I don't want the lead to look like Stallone or Arnold but to at least have a bit more manliness about him since there is a lot of action in the story. The original plot moves forward in time some years to where Paul is a more mature man and starting with a scrawny pretty boy all you are ever going to have is a scrawny pretty boy. When Paul becomes the master of the known universe he needs to have the stature and bearing of a real man who can impress and awe just by his mere appearance. There is an agenda be among many modern film makers to downplay the manliness of their leads till they all look like those skinny drug addict eurotrash models in all the perfume ads. If they could get away with recasting Paul as a female I'm sure they would. Now I have nothing against strong female leads, I would watch anything with Lucy Lawless, but I would prefer they come up with original characters instead of changing their gender in a bit to apeal to the sjw in the crowd. Not to open a different can of worms but the same goes for changing the race of a character such as with Marvel's Nick Fury. I'm older, I grew up reading the adventures of Sgt Fury and his howling commandos, and later Col Fury of Shield. He is an iconic character and despite the fact that I love Samuel Jacksons work and he has done a great job in the new movies I would have preferred if he was just a new character, Major so and so or General whoever Furys boss and leave Nick Fury alone. The same with Captain Marvel. He was a brave kree warrior and deserved to be respected and kept as he was. Carol Danvers could have been given her powers and a new name but leave Mar-vell alone. But like I said I'm older and I guess I'm on the losing side now. There is nothing wrong with females or actors of color being major characters just leave the originals alone and use a little imagination to come up with something new

After watching both versions, I found myself preferring the Alternate Dune as the better of the two 😮 because it was more believable than the mainstream version. Darker and more sinister but much more meatier but it's a case of the Exterminator clearing out the vermin and claiming his throne at the same time 😊. A strong movie indeed

They are all on point. This new version also gave more justice to the heart of the source material than lynches and also things that were out of reach at the time like the depiction of the sandworms, the sets , the whole universe of dune, everything just feels so alive and real.
      Another thing is, I don't find the new film dull or having a "lack of spirit", it just has a different atmosphere from the original movie which is fine, and I much prefer Denis take than lynches in my opinion.
