      He controlled Dune, the source of spice.
      He who controls the spice controls the universe.
      Spice comes from the sandworms, even the tiniest bit of water is deadly to sandworms.
      So he just killed countless sandworms, upended spice production, and all his leverage.

    People need to understand that Lynch didn't have final cut on "Dune"; the studio/De Laurentiis cut over an HOUR from the film - so a lot of scenes were shortened and a lot of motivations were left on the cutting room floor. If you watch Spice Diver's fan-edit (which can be seen on TH-cam for free, in 4K quality), the entire missing hour is restored to the film - and it's fantastic. While the film still dates itself with its FX (which were pretty low-rent, even for '84, considering that this was the time of "Blade Runner" a couple of years before, "The Empire Strikes Back" 4 years before, etc.) because they didn't have a company like ILM working on them, the 3-hour version is great and it's a shame that Lynch wasn't allowed to make the movie he wanted to make at the time. The 3-hour Spice Diver edit still isn't a "Director's Cut", but it shows that Lynch actually shot everything that would have made it a lot smoother in terms of the narrative. Basically, I think there's a perfect version of "Dune" that lies somewhere BETWEEN Lynch's version and Villeneuve's version; Lynch gets the fun and the weirdness of Herbert, while Villeneuve gets the scale and the scope of it. Each film lacks the best of the other version. What I think is fascinating in terms of translating the book to the screen, if you watch Lynch's version and then Villeneuve's (or vice versa), you see that Villeneuve basically used the *exact* same script template that Lynch wrote - almost EVERY SINGLE SCENE in Lynch's film is in Villeneuve's movies - meaning not just from the book, but from the way a script has to be written *from* the book. It just shows that Lynch knew what he was doing - but he just wasn't given the freedom and FX team and most importantly, LENGTH (which is why the 3-hour version works so much better) at the time. I still love it, but I only watch the Spice Diver 3-hour edit, as it's much closer to what Lynch wanted to do. And sorry, but the SCORE of Lynch's "Dune" is MILES better than Zimmers'. ;-)

    • @tomwebb7091
      @tomwebb7091 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      I concur on all fronts esp the score. Zimmers work on new Dune is amongst his blandest and most generic. It leaves me empty. As does much of the film. The original Lynch film is far, far richer and more interesting a version.

    • @Seabass-a
      @Seabass-a 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Although I really enjoy Villeneuve's Dune for its tone and breathtaking cinematography, I'll always have love for Lynch's Dune. We have to given credit the actors amazing performances in Lynch's Dune as well. While the two scripts may be nearly identical, I think the two directors styles are unique and enjoyable enough that they don't take away from each other making both films worthy of rewatching. You gotta love Lynch puting in a pug running into battle with Gurney!

      @@tomwebb7091I found the music to be kind of annoying. It was loud where it didn't need to be and the screaming tribal lady was in almost every scene. As I listened to it, I thought, this HAS to be the work of Zimmer. I was right.

      @@martincarter6961 Its certainly a feature of Nolan/Zimmer films, dialogue getting drowned. While i LOVE the soundtracks to Inception, Interstellar and Last Samurai, this was so lacklustre thatit grated on me more than normal too!

      Yeah I have to go for Lynch's Dune. It's a succesful failure, while Villeneuve's, like his other work, is borderline cold/nasty and anodyne. No weirdness. I'd trade the whole film for Lynch's guild navigator scene. That said I enjoyed Villeneuve's Dune and can appreciate it for what it is.

      @@aminmalik4086 just that area. It also rains on Arrakis, although very rarely, like a true desert. Even if it rained on the whole region, Arrakis is still a vast, planet spanning desert, it's like if it rained in Vermont: the rest of Earth would be pretty much unfazed.
