      Well, up to a point. The British abandoned their centuries old enmity with France in the face of the rise of Germany as the dominant power on the continent. In that sense 1904 can be seen as the first step towards WWI.

It is a term used by historians to point out the territories under the rule of the Plantagenet family. But fact is the Kingdom of England was independent, but for their lands in France (duchy of Normandy, county of Anjou, Duchy of Aquitaine) they were vassals to the French King and these territories were technically part of the Kingdom of France for which they had to pay hommage for. This complex situation led to the wars between England and France and their respective French kings

Either of those would put BP to Shame, which Probably explains why they weren't used. Besides which almost any large Gathering in France at the moment turns into a Riot & arunning Battle with the Gendarmes.

    Somebody connected with this otherwise beautifully staged event, ought to have a word with the police. It was shocking to see them encourage onlookers to cross back and forth in front of the open palace gates, especially during the playing of the national anthems. The result, as captured on video, was noticeably bad-mannered and ran counter to the message the British Government was trying to convey in marking the 120th anniversary of L' Entente Cordiale. The ceremony itself, however, was yet another triumph of British military precision and presentation. The Garde Républicaine made a great impression amid the all-round faultless turnout. Needless to say, the Band of the Grenadiers was first-rate.

    • @stevewaters449
      @stevewaters449 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      You try and organise tourists 🤷‍♂️ I take your point about National Anthems but I bet many of them weren't listening nor would have recognised either Anthem, and the Police just want them out of the way.

    • @e.chambers2973
      @e.chambers2973 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@stevewaters449 True enough! But that doesn't excuse poor policing practices at an international event, fraught with diplomatic overtones. During conventional guard changes, the palace gates are usually closed and in that scenario the police permit a fair amount of foot traffic in front of the entrance during proceedings, which seems fine. But on this occasion the gates were open and the police should have been sensitive to the psychological and optical difference - or perhaps the organizers of the event should have called it to their attention. When it suits them, the police are quite good at robustly herding tourists onto the sidewalks and keeping them there. I noticed in another video of the event that as they exited through the main palace gates, Senior Drum Major Gareth Chambers and the band narrowly avoided collision with a string of onlookers being waved across their path by a police woman, oblivious to what was coming up behind her. She came close to being flattened herself! That was another instance where the police should have been stopping rather than encouraging tourist traffic in front of the gate. It's easy, I know, to be an armchair critic... 😀

    I suspect that the UK is going to need a lot of help in the coming years, and though this is symbolic, I hope it is sign of real co-operation beneath the surface.

That I would believe give the Americans an inspiration to ensure their alliance is seen as important today as it was in the past and is far greater than Trumps threats which is treated with disdain. America has to understand and respect that the world is not reliant on them but at the same time, past history and loyalties have endured friendly relationships and threats from Trump of past has made all Europe and Asian alliance weary of America and as such, no alliance will trust America while Trump is given access to sensitive information thus, until the Presidential election is won by Biden, no such sensitive information sharing will be enjoyed by the US.
