HOW TO: CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES IN 60 SECONDS!!!!

  • Please watch: "WARNING. YOU'RE BEING LIED TO."
    • WARNING. YOU'RE BEING ...
    ~-~~-~~~-~~-~
NOTE: You can use the same alcohol in the jar you've poured but at the same time - but realistic - its is 90 days old! If so, change it. I change mine all day long - but i'm using lots of makeup and brushes etc...
There are two things I spend real money on. A good foundation and brushes. You can do more with bad makeup and good brushes than good makeup and bad brushes.
Brushes are the one area I spend money. It's a worth while investment.
There are a few ways to clean your brushes and soap and water is just fine if that's your preference.
Most makeup companies sell brush cleaners - and some contain a small amount of alcohol. These are fine too.
BUT for me I want to know my brushes are clean. Hospital grade clean. If someone I'm working on has an eye infection (that I can't see or they aren't aware of), cold sore, acne etc... I want to know that the cleaning solution I use will kill all bacteria - 100% to hospital grade.
I use 99% alcohol and it cleans the brush in seconds and depending on the size they're dry within 60 seconds to 5 minutes.
I clean my brushes everyday. Sometimes 3x a day. My brushes haven't dried out or turned corse. Some of my brushes are years old and they're still great - even with this frequent cleaning.
Never take a chance with cleaning your brushes especially if you're using them on other people.
5 litres of brush cleaning fluid will cost you about £30 and will last you 5 years.
All my makeup (eyeshadows, foundation, powders etc...) is cleaned and disinfected with beauty so clean spray. I cannot tell you how many makeup artists I've worked with who's kit was filthy. It's not pretty and I wouldn't want someone working on me with dirty makeup.
I once had a contract with a very large TV company. I was appalled at some of the other makeup artists kits. Granted they cleaned there brushes but not as frequently as they should and the makeup was filthy to look at. Would you want someone to do your face with that?
Makeup is expensive so treat it well. Clean your palettes. Knock off and clean excess fall out from your palettes. Even though the product is used it should still look clean - spotless.
If you're only doing your makeup then your cleaning frequency is entirely up to you. But if you ask me - clean your makeup.
Look after your face and look after your clients face.
Most good makeup suppliers sell or can order makeup brush cleaner.

Great tip. I searched for 'how to clean make-up brushes' on youtube and lots of vids popped up. Of course when I saw yours, I immediately clicked on it. Any thing that I search for and I see that you made a vid on it, your vid is my FIRST and sometimes only choice to watch. I value your opinion and your expertise. Thx for being an awesome resource!

I love that the brushes dry so fast as opposed to being cleaned with soap and water. The longer your brushes are wet, the higher the chance you can breed new bacteria....not to mention that the brush can feel dry and still have water in the base of the brush(especially with blush brushes/kabuki brushes)which can cause mold or fungus growth as well as cause the crush fibers to deteriorate and shed. Very informative.

For those curious about the MSDS on Metsolve 4021 it contains acetone, octane, propan-2-ol, methylcyclohexane and heptane. The CDC - Center for Disease Control and Prevention - recommends 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. 99% is *NOT* recommended due to the fact it is not effective in germ-killing.

In labs we use 70% alcohol, because a higher percentage will actually not kill the cells as they will survive a higher percentage due to spore formation -> cells will live.

  • @alexpeng5977

Here is what I know: 70~75% alcohol actually does a better job at disinfecting and killing everything than 99% alcohol does. Plus, it is probably cheaper! Hope this helped!

Thank you so much for spreading the word on sanitation, Wayne! I am a makeup artist myself and I cannot tell you how many other professionals I have seen not clean their brushes between models or even worse, double dip their products without any sanitation in between. It appalls me every time since the beauty school I went to really stressed your method of sanitizing with alcohol to the point that at the end of the day the room reeked like a hospital haha.

I got all of Wayne's brushes, you recommend to wash them with baby shampoo and not to use alcohol. But how do you disinfect them? Will hospital grade alcohol damage the brushes? Thanks so much!

LadySasa1000 I've just spent $250 on his face collection brushes and I too am confused. He states not to use alcohol on his brushes as it will Dry them out. I'm a makeup artist and am now wondering if I can only baby shampoo the foundation out of the brush as advised by @Wayne Goss
Arrgh. If I have to do that inbetween each client I will need x5 of his foundation brushes.
I find the alcohol brush spray cleaners the fastest way to completly clean and have the fastest drying time. Especially with some long lasting Foundations, RCMA FOUNDATION ...etc.
Am also interested to see if the foundation brushes stay white if baby shampoo is the only way I can clean. Also I can do 5 or 6 makeups in a morning....hmmm.
Maybe these brushes are not suitable for makeup artists.
Anyone have an answer to this dilemma please advise.
Otherwise they will be returned to beautylish I think.

    70% alcohol - 30% distilled water.

    • @lunefee
      @lunefee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The 99.9% alcohol solution is confusing because in a science lab, 70/30 isopropyl/water is the best to lyse bacterial cells. 99.9% isn't used in the lab because all that does is dry up the cell, and then as soon as it hits enough moisture then it's back to normal.

    • @zadidoll
      @zadidoll 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

@lunefee is correct. The CDC does recommend 70% isopropyl alochol over 95% or 99% not because it dries up the cell (this is the part that's incorrect) but because it coagulates ("become a solid") the cell wall which does not allow the alcohol to penetrate the cell wall. The best analogy I can think of is what happens to Han Solo in one of the Star Wars original movies where he's "frozen" in metal but still alive on the inside. This is what happens to a cell when 95% or 99% is used - the outside is "frozen" but the inside remains alive. 70% allow the alcohol to be penetrate the wall cell killing it.
For those that don't have access to 70% but has 95% or 99% you can dilute it with distilled water but you need to have your ratios correct because anything less than 70% is ineffective as is anything over 91%.

I'm a fan, Wayne, from Manila. I also watch a few other female gurus but when I only have limited time, I just watch yours. Your tutorials are the best, way better than those made by famous female gurus because you waste no time and have the most practical advice. You're the first ever to advocate for proper hygiene not only in brushes but in make-up as well. More power! I have told other friends about you and they love you just as much as I do.

I clean my brushes after every use and I only use them on me but I like to start out each time with clean tools. Your clean kit is the first thing I noticed in your vids!

  • @chellecopley67
    @chellecopley67 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is so confusing. I read we are supposed to baby our brushes and mist them or give them a wipe with evoo to keep them conditioned, then some say use this commercial stuff for makeup and in 2009 Wayne said that using the mist spray of 90% alcohol was the same as using the beauty so clean stuff. Now I have some ELF brushes that are cheapies, some Mac ones I have paid a decent price for and some others in differing price ranges but no one wants to unnecessarily waste money by messing up the brushes we have. I eventually want to get Wayne's brushes and the Artis line as well. I know using Alcohol will dry out real hair brushes but do we really need to condition them or can someone give me the No BS answer to this? LOL and those ELF brushes I've heard such great things about are as tender as can be because I have washed mine several times with baby wash and shampoo and they have split up the handle. None of my others have done this so I won't be repurchasing those brushes.

It has to do with cells dying. If you use a higher percentage than 70% the cell will shrink too fast and the cell will just shrivel up but not die. If you use 70% alcohol the cell will die and not shrivel. Something like that..

i've watched numerous videos lately with make-up artists showing us how to "clean our brushes", however, most of them do not do it frequent enough for my liking, and their methods aren't good enough for me. Just curious because I was watching your old video on disinfecting makeup which is how I clicked on this one and you mentioned that you use rubbing alcohol in that video because it was 3 pounds something for x amount of liquid to disinfect your makeup and that beauty so clean did a makeup cleaning spray that was 25 pounds and you recommended getting the alcohol because it was cheaper and you got more. I was just curious if you could clarify why you switched to beauty so clean. Is it somehow better than rubbing alcohol?

I use a PARIAN SPIRIT CANISTER pot when cleaning my brushes with alcohol. its so handy. All the makeup falls from the brush into the bottom of the jar.
So glad to hear someone else uses alcohol. When cleaning brushes everyday they take ages to dry if you wash them and can go smelly and mouldy and rot the glue. I am confident. like you, that when using alcohol, brushes are 'clean'. I do wash my big brushes with shampoo after removing makeup with a small amount of alcohol.

I would try to avoid getting the metal part in the alcohol too much because it could get inside the brush that way. If that happens, it may weaken the glue that holds the bristles in over time. If you get that part wet by accident I'm sure it's fine, just don't submerge the whole brush. :)

Not available in the USA but there is a similar product with the same ingredients. It's CINEMA makeup brush cleaner made in Burbank California. WORKS this good! Nice video that explains you don't need to grind your valuable brushes in soap and water - which degrades them and can make them mildew - by the long drying time - like we all imagine you do. I just heard from my boyfriend who is an pharmacist that bacteria and definitely viruses do not die if you dip your brush in it. They have to lay in there for half an hour, for some bacteria. So you can't completely prevent infections. Also, alcohol dries out animal hairs. The synthetic hairs do good on this, but not always the ones with animal hairs.
Apart from that I think you do a lot and lot better than many other mua's on this subject and in general! I just wanted to add this information.

  • @sourcow56

Hello. In our microbiology class, we always disinfected our equipment and tables using 70% alcohol. Furthermore, even hospital alcohol wipes that we use before giving injections are 70% isopropyl alcohol. Using 99.9% evaporates too quickly for it to effective kill bacteria; alcohol with water works much better. I will most certainly try this!

  • @missmarsie
    @missmarsie 13 ปีที่แล้ว

small point of critique: pure alcohol (+/- 95%) does not kill bacteria at all. the alcohol evaporates to quickly (that's why the brush dries in seconds). the alcohol needs time to get into the bacteria in order to destroy them. in fact pure alcohol will cause bacteria to form a sort of protein capsule which makes it even harder to kill them. if you how ever use a 70% alcohol solution, which is used in a medical environments, all the bacteria will be gone. love your videos, keep it up :)

@Neel88 There are traincases you can get that specifically keep out humidity. They're used by makeup artists when they're working outdoors to protect their stuff. My boyfriend got me one on eBay, and it works amazingly well.

First of all, this is GREAT tip. I think a lot of people are concerned whether they will ruin their expensive brushes, and you addressed that, I think, very well. The last bit with BeautySoClean is useful too! I'll look it up. Thanks, Wayne. ;)

Thank you for this! I have been wondering for a long time about what is the correct way to wash brushes. I haven't bought anything past my cheap EcoTools for that reason. I should have searched your videos! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And I thought the MAC brush cleaner was good until I watched this vid and then went out and bought 96% alcohol.
Now I use less to clean more and it's cheaper and dries so quickly. Thanks for his great, practical tip for cleaning brushes! Gossmakeupartist rox!

I just commented on one of your other videos on how to clean your brushes, and now you've answered my question. If I were a smart person, I would have searched for this video BEFORE asking that question... clearly, I'm not as smart as I thought I was (she says on a public web site for all to see...no shame AT ALL). ;) Thanks!

Thank you soo soo much. One thing I hate so much is cleaning make up brushes because they take soo long to dry (and like a day or two to dry a kabuki in winter) and soo long to clean. Will definitely go and purchase the 99% Alcohol tomorrow and clean my brushes regularly

@missmarsie Agree. That's what is being taught in microbiology class. Use 70% ethanol instead. Pure alcohol dehydrates the cells and encourages the formation of endospores which are hard to kill and can be activated again with water/nutritions.

Great tip! I keep alcohol in a small spray bottle in my bathroom and at my kitchen sink and I am all the time spraying it on the faucets, toilet handles, etc. But I had no idea you could "clean" your brushes with it without using soap and water (and an overnight drying time"....thanks!

i am going to try this with 91% alcohol and see how it goes down. using alcohol sounds like a very economical and effective way to clean and sanitize my brushes. i might as well give it a go. THanks!

Gosh 5 litres! You can also use it to burn down your house if you're depressed and don't want to live anymore. ;-)
I'm a very impatient person so I love the idea that my brushes can be über-clean AND dry within minutes. Will definitely try this. Thanks a lot!

I bought MAC's brush cleaner just to have something to quickly clean them, but I don't like the smell it leaves behind! I think I will try something else like this for instant cleans also I bought the brush conditioner from Beauty So Clean at IMATS but haven't tried it yet. Before all this I used dish soap and water and let them dry overnight. Love that! Thanks!!!

Thanks for this tip. Lately I've begun to really understand that investing in better brushes is worth it. I can get myself ready faster and I notice a difference in how my eye makeup looks since I got a few better brushes. Wish I understood that sooner but never too late. And since I'm spending more on brushes I've been wondering what the best way to clean AND sanitize them without damaging. I trust your opinion above just about everyone else on YT so I'm going to try this on my brushes :o)

Love your videos Wayne, and they're always so helpful! I have a question - can alcohol be used on both natural hair bristle brushes as well as synthetic ones? Just want to make sure it's okay for both, before I risk ruining any of my brushes. Thanks so much! xx

I use dish washing soap and olive oil mixed together. It disenfrcts and keeps the bristles soft even if the drying time is longer.

For Brits, I use surgical spirit (get it from boots/superdrug) which is 90% alcohol and works brilliantly. If you splash it around, the room may smell ucky for a few minutes, but it soon goes.
You also don't have to buy 5 litres of the stuff, which is what put me off. No way I could store a 5 litre bottle in University accomodation! I decant the spirit into a spray bottle (again from Boots) spray it on a bit of cotton/toilet paper/kitchen towel, wipe the brush over it and it's done. Perfect.

I always hate if I washed my favourite brushes and then they're not dry, when I need them next morning.
Maybe I'm going to try that.

@cherilyndria even if the brush is submerged into the alcohol, most bacteria encapsulate almost immediately. the alcohol will react with the flexible polypeptides on the surface of the bacteria causing them to harden and form a sort of almost impenetrable crust. mind you some bacteria can still be active and are still able to procreate in this form. also the water in the solution is needed for the bacteria's cell wall to be disintegrated
