  • Insider's Caroline Aghajanian is using her time at home to finally clean her makeup brushes. She typically cleans her brushes with her face wash and a makeup-brush-cleaning mat, but she will test out three other popular methods for alternative options.
The first method is mixing extra-virgin olive oil with dish soap, like Dawn or Palmolive. The extra-virgin olive oil can help break down makeup and can also moisturize the bristles so the brushes don't dry out.
The second method is with hot water, white vinegar, and dish soap mixed together into a cup. The white vinegar will help disinfect the makeup brushes.
The third method is washing brushes with castile soap, like Dr. Bronner's castile soap, and disinfecting with apple cider vinegar afterwards. All of these methods will leave makeup brushes clean and ready for application.

My art teacher in college always told us not to ever use hot water on brushes, as it will melt the glue that holds the bristles in place and they will fall out easily. This was a great tip!

I’ve done the first method before with the virgin olive oil but the oil left an oily residue and I had to repeatedly clean them with dish soap to get rid of it. The second method with the vinegar seemed the best but in theory the third method which is so similar to the 2nd would work great.

  • @missmayflower
    @missmayflower ปีที่แล้ว +1

Too complicated. Just wash them with dish soap or shampoo. Don’t soak them or you’ll loosen the bristles from the ferrule. Rinse really well. Squeeze and reshape with a paper towel to get out excess water. Dry flat. You don’t need to get out a bunch of products. That Castille soap will leave a soap film/residue on the brush that could break you out.

Using it in a solution that you only use for a minute or two is probably the best way to keep your brushes safe from fallout!

I basically handle my makeup brushes the same I do with my regular watercolor brushes. Wash them in slightly warm water (not hot) with mild soap to not ruin the hairs /fibers and dry them with the bristle side down to keep the water away from the base. I actually use my drying brush stand for both lol it’s really handy and made out of metal so you can properly clean it and sterilize after using it.

Here some tips from a broke-ass b!tch who has too much free time to experiment and think: 🤓
"Please don't dunk your brushes and soak them"
    - Liquid soap is very convenient for powder brushes; As for brushes that are covered in cream or liquid, scrub or swirl them into a bar of soap will do the trick. If you use Dr. Bronners' liquid soap, you might as well grab the bar too.
    - Adding mineral oil instead of plant-based oil into the soap can help break down the makeup faster since mineral oil-based products and silicones are the best at melting down makeup. You can use baby oil because it's just mineral oil with fragrance. Plant-based oils are harder to remove even with soap so they can still be on the brush which you might think is great, but if those oils get on your skin it can cause problems, especially those with acne.
    - This is for those who have a rice cooker, the plastic spoon that comes with the cooker has textures you can use to scrub your brushes. Kitchen gloves sometimes have textures that you can use as well.
    - When all the soap is clear, place your brush between both hands bristles facing down then run your hands back and forward vigorously like you're making fire with a stick. This will spin all of that water out of your brush making drying time a lot faster. Squeezing and pulling the water out can pull the hair out too, I had a whole brush head yanked out of the ferrule once. Similar to that Stylo brush spinning thing but cheaper OwO

Wow! Thank you I am happy that now I don’t have to buy anything from make up stores to clean. I would love to know which make you brushes you consider good quality from your experience. I have been experimenting but I would love some feedback for some longer lasting quality brushes especially for foundation and eyeshadow because I use those a lot

I shake my brushes after rinsing them and make sure to wipe from the tip of the handle through the metal part and squeeze the bristles so drain any water. I like to wash my make up brushes in J & J regular baby shampoo. I just pour a small amount into an empty plastic tumbler and add warm water then I place the brushes in the glass and swirl them around. I also use a plastic rubber facial scrubber to swirl the brushes against the little plastic bristles, then I rinse them and dry them on a soft towel, then I shake them and place them in a plastic brush dryer so they are upside down. TIP: rinse the brushes in COLD water to completely dissolve the soap molecules so they don't leave residue in the bristles. I have also used lavender castile soap but it is harder to rinse away.

Same here. Johnson's baby shampoo is great. I pour a small amount into my silicone brush scrubber, rinse with warm water, lye flat to dry. Then I spray the bristles with brush antiseptic spray.

All valid too me, but Better to Use Mild soap! me, using J&J baby wash/shampoo in luke warm or cold water and yup, wash downward to avoid water residue that holds the glue. I also had brush rack to hang downward and then dry.

  • @rhondawilson5234

Submerged brushes will fall apart. The glue will turn loose & cause brushes to fall apart. I learned this the hard way

I would not swirl any of my makeup brushes on a flat surface like that. You can tangle the brush hairs or loosen them. Be gentle with them, use your shampoo, maybe with a drop of conditioner, but do NOT clean them like that!

  • @emilymulcahy

Soap breaks down oil, so I think soap would be better alone, if you need to break down an oil-based makeup yeah use some oil but for most people it's not necessary

I use vinegar to wash delicates and the vinegar will not leave a smell. You don't have to use any scented soap bc there's no vinegar smell after. It's fine just using vinegar
