  • We take the 2023 Ford Raptor R to our test course to find out if this supertruck is really better than its main rival from Ram. With a new 5.2-liter supercharged V8 this Ford Raptor R packs 700 horsepower of ground pounding power, the most ponies Ford has ever put in a Raptor.

    • @TheAnnoyingBoss

      Same with the teslas. They upgrade the power to make it supercar level at the lower speeds but because it regenerative breaks they slack so all models have the same brakes no matter how much more money you spend. Usually it doesn't matter unless you hit the track but shoot bro if my supertruck or Tesla cost 150k I just might! Then again, it is primarily an offroading vehicle, so is there an offroading disadvantage to bigger brakes?

    • @bosssho3096
      @bosssho3096 ปีที่แล้ว

      17" wheels murder the ability for actual brakes...my 14 SVT has better brakes than my 17 did...and with MORE power you NEED to at least offer a 20" wheel package so that you can have real brakes.
      At least the TRX has 18" wheels and I LOVE my Brakes compared to the Raptor.

    There is a secondary point to this discussion - the regular Raptor is actually surprisingly fuel efficient, and with a 140 liter tank it has really good range for overlanding. The V8 isn't able to do that. Then again, it's not built for that either ;) I'll be keeping my 2020 I reckon - an upgrade to a 2023 with 37's is tempting but not tempting enough to make me swap!

    • @T4nkcommander
      @T4nkcommander ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The HO 3.5 is really the ideal engine for the Raptor, with plenty of low end torque, great fuel efficiency, and lighter weight up front so you don't pogo as much on hard hits off-road. The TRX is a lot slower bajaing because they added a lot of weight up front without beefing up the shocks.

    • @barrthom603
      @barrthom603 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@T4nkcommander Raptor R is way over priced and not a massive improvement in performance over the HO 3.5 yet you give up a lot to get the V8. For $50-80k more when you consider ADM on R over standard raptor and 5mpg hit and forced premium fuel...not worth it.

    • @carculturenation2166
      @carculturenation2166 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i say the same. with a tune a regular raptor is damn near putting out similar power with less weight. The way i see it. if you want power and speed buy a mustang. if you want a fast truck buy a v8 f150 awd starting at 35k single cab short bed or more for a cheap or loaded 4 dr. I tell people for under 100k you can build either a 8 sec 1/4 mile street truck or with some offroad suspension still under 90k including mods. Coyote v8 can handle up to 1200whp or a good daily 950whp with boost and a fuel system. no heads no cams no pistons no rods. stock sealed motor. go built motor and Coyote can handle up to 2000hp. Youwant the fast truck build a fast f150 or mustamg gt for 55k 60k awd f150+ turbo or supercharger

      The 3.5 really is the ideal engine for the Raptor IMO. Great low end torque, solid fuel efficiency, and lighter weight meaning better high-speed off-road performance. The shocks still pogo bad enough up front as is, I have seen TRXs in action and it completely kills their momentum.

    Great review, I love how you put these trucks to the test and don't worry about every little think that might happen. But this is obviously a big toy. I don't feel like it is something people are wondering if they should buy it, if you can you will - price is no object kind of decision. It's a pissing match between Ford and RAM and they just charge so much to cover their costs of building something nobody can really afford to prove a point. That's all good, But what I would do is buy a used Raptor from a few years ago and get 80-90% of the fun with less than half the money.

      Ron, in all fairness, Ford's been pushing the envelope for decades. Dodge wasn't around when the F150 lightning came out. Dodge wasn't around when ford came out with the Original raptor Over a decade ago. The TRX is an insanely capable and quick vehicle. I think if the raptor never existed, neither would the TRX. Just my opinion.

      Ford had a big displacement V8 in an off-road truck. They decided to push the Ecoboost and made it the only option for the Raptor. A V6 in an off road truck makes a lot more sense due to the lighter weight but let's be honest most Raptors and TRX's will not even see a washboard road let alone go off road.

    truly a golden era for big power and capability. the modern power era in American V8s to me goes back to the Terminator mustangs. the Cyclone and Lightning to a lesser extent. the 80s and 90s were mostly a lull for mainstream big power from the factory.
