This movie was my Empire Strikes Back growing up. It came out the summer I was about to start high school. I’d already been a big comic reader for most of my life, Batman was my favorite character and I loved Begins so I was already in the bag for this movie. Nothing could’ve prepared me for what was about to unfold though. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. Nolan took the thing I already loved and elevated it to another level. A perfect amalgamation of great filmmaking and comic book fantasy. After I saw this I started looking at films as more than just entertainment and really tried to analyze them. Im sure The Batman will be great and there will be other great Batman films but this one and this trilogy in general forever has a special place in my heart. Loving the re-watch series and the new channel, keep up the great work!
You just perfectly articulated my feelings regarding this movie and the Nolan trilogy in general. I was born in 1978 so naturally my GOAT franchises were Star Wars, Rocky movies, Donner’s Superman 1 & 2. Nolan’s trilogy is up there as my TOP contemporary comic book movies, even above ALL marvel movies
The rewatch series has honestly been some of the best content to come out for me. I love the long form discussions and I really hope you continue with other movie franchises. Keep up the wicked work Kristian and crew!
I've loved these rewatches and this one was my favorite. Thank you for doing them and a huge thank you for Coy for saying what I want to say whenever people talk ill of Heath. This movie and Begins are so important to me and you guys absolutely nailed the rewatches for them.
Grateful for Coy taking the time to defend Heath! Also always grateful for the rewatches! Add "I'll buy that for a dollar" to the list? 🤷🏿♂️ Thanks Kristian! 🙏🏿
This film is a masterpiece. Transcendent of the genre and fully changed the game for comic book movies. One of the best sequels ever done and IMO the best performance in film takes place in it. This truly unlocked my love for cinema and well put together/ written films. I can go on and on about the achievements in this but do I really need to? “I wish I knew”
Another awesome Batman discussion. Loved Alfred's "watch the world " conversation with Bruce about the Joker. Regarding Alfred Yeah, I've been watching season 2 of Pennyworth Coy and Winston mentioned HBO max and been enjoying it also.
The midnight showing of this was the craziest thing ive seen at the theatre. The theatre i went to was playing the Dark Knight on every single screen. There were multiple lines of hundreds of people all over like a rock concert. Everyone was pumped. What an experience!
Dude. The midnight screening of The Dark Knight in my hometown was so packed that my friends ended up sitting in the floor seats. And I ended up sitting on the floor. Still no regrets. One of my favorite film experiences of all time.
The first comic book movie that transcended the genre. Not just one of the best superhero movies ever, it’s one the best films ever. The Godfather of superhero movies in my opinion. Should of been nominated for best picture.

The hostage scene. He disables the first floor to take care of the swat team while protecting the hostages and criminals. No one died and that was the point. So much detail the time he set in the bombs tick to the second . The swat guy says “ step away from the ledge” nice touch
15:05 Thanks for the shout out on the cards! 👍 Great reviews guys! I'm glad you can be in the studio again... (EDIT: 46:50 oh, I had to keep watching... 😅)
Arguably the best comic book movie ever made. I go back and forth as to which I like more, the Dark Knight or Mask of the Phantasm. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are my favourite and a lot of other people's favouite Batman and Joker so maybe I lean more towards Mask of the Phantasm. Speaking of which, I know you guys said you might do it as a patreon exclusive, but could you maybe do a rewatch for it after The Batman comes out or maybe do a review video afterwards for people who are unable to access patreon such as myself please?
Just watching this now. That actor who the Joker says "you remind me of my father" was not some producer. He is US Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont. He's a huge Batman fan and is always in the Batman movies.
It makes me sad that we lost Heath so young. My heart goes out to his family and daughter. Very happy his work didn’t go unnoticed in this film, for me Heath Ledger and Mark Hamill have set the bar for the best Joker in live action and in animation, they’re both funny and terrifying simultaneously.
Especially the reason we lost him. I researched his history and he struggled with horrible insomnia at times, as i have. He was just trying to sleep and did what he thought would help him. Even apart from his iconic performance in TDK, he was such a huge talent in general. He is missed.
Some people thought that the Two Face character was rushed in the film but I disagree. Harvey clearly had psychological issues prior to his transformation into Two Face. The whole scene where he interrogates one of Joker's men highlights that. Also Harvey already didn't trust Gordon's unit because he knew they were corrupt. Even after losing Rachel and having his face burned, it wasn't until the Joker got in Harvey's head that the transformation was complete.
Love the discussion I almost wonder if I'll regret rewatching Batman Begins and The Dark Knight because Im reminded they're so good and it could be setting a standard too high for Matt Reeves' The Batman
The gentleman at the party that confronts Joker is Senator Pat Leahy, He has been in Batman films dating back to Batman Forever. He’s been a fan since childhood and he donates his salary. He’s also a board member in TDKR.

Dark Knight is one of those few movies that transcends comic book movies. It’s the comic book movie that your grand pa would like. It’s so layered that 13 years later and countless times watching it I still find new things. One of my all time favorite movies of all time. I do not feel that way about the other two movies in the trilogy. But I do like them. Even though they don’t hold up as well as this one.
Rewatching these movies because your rewatches popped in my feed. I think the passage of time had somewhat dulled the shine of this trilogy, and holy fuck I'd almost forgotten what proper cinema in this genre feels like. I know the movies cost a decent chunk of money (half of Indy, though lol) but god it was money well spent. I have a million thoughts and feelings (I'll spare you) and I'm thankful to Mr Nolan and everyone else involved for inspiring them, and of course you guys for nudging me to go back and watch.
I also hold it close to my heart that Heath's Joker was a vet from Iraq and was forgotten about way before he got there or way after. My head canon is that Erik Stevens and Heath met overseas. They have a lot of similar goals.
Definitely my favorite of the Nolan Trilogy, and possibly my favorite Batman movie. I think what I like about the movie is that it doesn't *feel* like a superhero movie, or even a "traditional Batman" movie; it feels like a crime drama that just so happens to have Batman in it. While the movie expands the canvas a bit to focus more on Joker, Harvey Dent, and Gordon, at the end of it, it still feels like Batman is still the focus, and we get a sense of what he's lost, and how much he's had to sacrifice, just to stick to his convictions to ultimately prove Joker wrong about the human condition. I always maintained that even though the city of Gotham doesn't have that traditional Gothic look in these movies, I argue that Gotham feels more like an actual character, as through the characters like Gordon, Dent, and random citizens, we get a sense of what's at stake. What's had to be said about Ledger's performance as the Joker, has been said. It's GOAT status, period. While Ledger's performance is Joker rightfully takes the spotlight, I think Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent gets unfairly glossed over. He was a GREAT Harvey Dent, and did a great job of getting you to sympathize with him a bit. Comic Book fans know what's up, but I loved that his transformation into Two-Face wasn't just some going-through-the-superhero-story-motions plot point; his descent into villainy really feels tragic. By the time we've reached the end with him, Gordon and Batman confronting each other, it really is a sad moment. While Marvel has spoiled us with how much they embrace the comic-booky nature of these types of movies, I feel that "Dark Knight" is a unique animal. It really is gearing itself to be the opposite of what people expect from superhero stories/movies, but it still fees true to the characters that we've read about/watched in the original comics and other superhero stories. I love "Batman Begins", but this movie really does make it look more "standard issue", for lack of a better expression. "Begins" is the origin story, so I guess it's unfair.... but with the shackles of having to walk the audience through basics completely off, "The Dark Knight" feels like its exercising its creative freedom, and just going for it. It doesn't even feel the same in tone, as it just has a more visceral and unnerving quality. Fucking love this movie.
seeing TDK opening Thursday at 10pm with a packed crowd and terrible seats next to the EXIT sign is still my favourite movie going experience ever. I bought a Heath joker poster in Oct of 2008 and he has watched over me as a sleep since then, it's nice knowing his close. I ended up seeing it in theaters 8 times, 4 of those since I worked at a dollar theater. That swat scene at construction site represents what Batman is all about. A master tactician saving the hostages and the swat teams taking down thugs is awesome. With all that chaos happening it’s Batman in the middle saving lives even though the police and city thinks otherwise.
The scene with Polka Dot Man (😂 ), I find to be very integral to the film. It shows the Joker’s cult like influence over criminals and the mentally unstable
I love this one but Batman Begins is still my favourite. I still don't think Batman needed to take the fall at the end. They could have just told the city it was Joker and pinned Harvey's death on a joker henchman.
Dude would love to watch you and Mark do one off these with a jcvd movie like hard target or awol. Loved the interview you Guy's did in the collider days with van damme
Gordon: "We're going after the mob's life savings. Things will get ugly." Harvey: "I knew the risk when I took this job lieutenant." In Dent's arrogance, he truly did not know the risk.
Loving all of the rewatch series and interviews. Once The Batman is here have you guys thought about what's next? I dobn't know if you'd be open to it since the newest scream already came and went but it'd be cool to see rewatch tackle that or maybe the mainline Conjuring films. Keep up the great work!!
My only critiques for The Dark Knight is that their's an editing error in the garage scene when you see Batman for the first time and I do prefer Katie Holmes over Maggie Gyllenhaal
I want Coy's shirt, Winston's jacket, and Kristian's ability to use the I wish knew sound bite. I do my own rewatches of this trilogy and when I come back to Dark Knight I ask myself "It can't be as good as I thought it was right?" And it's as good if not better. Ugh this film is great
People who say this movie is overrated are like people who say The Beatles are overrated. I mean it is fine if you don't like either, however the way they say it is almost always with an unearned pride and edginess which always comes off as comical. It's like they want a special cookie for disliking something almost everyone else likes.
Sometimes I scroll through the comments sections of videos looking for comments that end in question marks so that I can reply "I wish I knew." I'm an engine of chaos, see. It's all part of the plan.
There's a deleted scene where Joker uses the plant from Batman Begins to make deadly laughing gas. i wish they would've left it in because I like that it implies he has a connection to Ra's without getting specific. He could've trained him, he could've just helped or just maybe the scarecrow inspired him
James Newton Howard is co-credited on The Dark Knight score. As I understood it, he handled the Dent stuff, Hans did the Joker stuff and methinks both did Bats.
I still can not believe that this was not nominated for Best Picture. The fact the Oscar's are still haunted by this is hilarious. Christian Bale is terrific in this movie, when he punches Joker, the rage in him, how is face turns red full of rage, hes so good in this moive, he is amazing and of course Heath. 20/10 movie.
This is one of those films that is so monumental that most people remember what was going on in their lives at the time. I was stationed in Okinawa for the AF and i still recall the line around the block on opening night which is unheard of at a base theater. You could tell everyone was into it. A great, classic film. Almost everything just works. Love the relationship of Batman, Gordon, and Dent. Bale is great...except the bat voice, especially in the final scene, but he really is fantastic in this film even though Ledger (rightly) gets most of the praise. I also think Eckhart is pitch perfect as Harvey. My only nitpicks are every line of dialogue uttered by cops/SWAT in this movie are so horribly campy and bad, i thought Nolan hired Bernard the Butler from Raimi's Spiderman films. I also wish they hadn't killed Dent off right away. Very small gripes with a genius film. Two years after this, Nolan would make his masterpiece, imo, Inception, and you can see that smart but fun blockbuster from Begins and TDK in its DNA. We need more Kristian, Winston, and Coy in the world right now. You guys make it a happier place to live.
P.S. Thank you, Coy for your Ledger rant. I never got the feeling he was an addict anyway, but when i looked into it, it hit me so hard, because i deal with anxiety and insomnia and when i saw what he took, i realized how desperate he was just to sleep, and how easily the same could have happened to me. Taken far too young.
Bale is a great actor but I don't know why he had to pick the throat-cancered voice as Batman in the Dark Knight, when his lower toned raspy voice in Batman Begins was better.
Watched the movie for the sake of this video. So awesome, you guys are great. I was so excited to watch this again and ready to hear your thoughts. #iwishiknew
I remember going to Batman begins and Batman’s first fight scene he looked so fast compared to what I was expecting. We all jumped lol it had that Bourne quality to it with the sped up stuff at least compared to other action movies prior. Going back and watching those scenes now they aren’t nearly as fast feeling as every one does it now. But man do I remember loving the more visceral Batman fight style. Oh and the line from raz where he’s like you fought 8 prisoners we can teach you to engage 600 was badass. Like this is Batman’s peak if needed. He was trained to take on a village. By himself or Through force multiplying we don’t know …..
Love the rewatch series, guys! You guys are definitely getting a lot of Batman origin stories and we haven’t even seen the Robert Battison version yet so I get if you guys take a break in March, but a lot of people think the Batman TAS movie ‘Mask of the Phantasm’ is the best Batman movie period. Pretty sure it’s less than 90 minutes and has some truly terrific animation Not sure why you guys skipped it but it’s definitely worth a watch, what are you guys waiting for? “I wish I knew.”
Wow. What a coincidence. I just watched this yesterday. Still can’t believe that it wasn’t nominated for Best Picture. Also, heath ledger’s joker is so much better than Joaquin Phoenix’s version.
If you end up still doing the rewatch I suggest a movie 2 Guns with Denzel Washington and Mark Walburg. Just a fun movie with great chemistry between them.
They really are fantastic. Thanks Nemos! Please check out Friday Night Titans, it is our new weekly show. Would love to get your thoughts! th-cam.com/video/ZbsYDttQgv0/w-d-xo.html
A lot of people have gripes with Joker's over elaborate plans. I thinks it adds to his mystery, like he's got this supernatural, mystical aura about him. It's almost like he's the devil and he's trying to corrupt Batman, seduce him to go against what he stands for.
Coy just got one thing wrong. Gillian Loeb is the name of the Comissioner in the Batman Year One comic. So, the name is not a nod to Jeph Loeb, just a coincidence. As Batman Begins was heavily inspired in Batman Year One they kept the Comissioner's name from the comic, but changed his personality completely, and he went on to appear in The Dark Knight too.
I have a specific relationship with this movie, it was the first time I kissed a girl in a movie theater. I remember not thinking much of the movie at the time (probably because I wasn't paying much attention lol) but I could watch this movie infinitely on repeat and still enjoy it.

Just in time. Arguably the best comic book movie/batman film, and a darn great film. On a side note, does one cut and snort Joymode. 😆
Have fun with the rewatch!
He's not a producer he's a senator and his name is Patrick Leahy
Yup
That swat scene at construction site represents what Batman is all about. A master tactician saving the hostages and the swat teams taking down thugs is awesome. With all that chaos happening it’s Batman in the middle saving lives even though the police and city thinks otherwise.
That scene give me chills!
So good
Coy is referring to Senator Patrick Leahy, who’s been involved in six separate Batman projects, both live-action and animated.
Nice
Loving all these as usual guys ! Can’t wait for the Batman we are so close
Thank you!
Looking forward to this discussion, cant wait for the Peacemaker finale review as well
Dropping that today at 2:15
Thank you Coy for the information about Heath. I also hate when people say that about him. Not cool at all.
The Dark Knight is my #1 movie all time.
So good
The guy Joker said reminded him of his father at the party was a real life senator, not a producer. He's a big Batman fan and was also in BvS
See so not the other 4! I knew I was right! Damn you Coy!!
@@TheKristianHarloff He's actually 3rd in line to be President. He was in Forever, Batman and Robin, Dark Knight, DK Rises, and BvS
49:00 coy ❤️
:)
@@TheKristianHarloff ❣️
The scene with Polka Dot Man (😂 ), I find to be very integral to the film. It shows the Joker’s cult like influence over criminals and the mentally unstable
Yup
I love this one but Batman Begins is still my favourite. I still don't think Batman needed to take the fall at the end. They could have just told the city it was Joker and pinned Harvey's death on a joker henchman.
I hear it a lot!
I'm a little late to the party listening to these rewatches on Spotify, and for some reason I chose to listen to them backwards. Why?..I wish I knew.
Haha fair enough!
Dude would love to watch you and Mark do one off these with a jcvd movie like hard target or awol. Loved the interview you Guy's did in the collider days with van damme
Maybe for the Patreon exclusive~
These rewatches give me life.
Haha thanks!
One part that's cracks me up , is when joker takes off his face mask at the hospital and Harvey didn't know it was the joker prior to that 😂
I did think of that this watch!!
The “Look” moment....AGREED, I even had to watch it really quick.😂
Which part?
Pennyworth is my favourite comic-book show, I'm really happy it moved to HBO-Max so more people might check it out.
Thank you!
Its SO good. Glad your diggin it!
Gordon: "We're going after the mob's life savings. Things will get ugly."
Harvey: "I knew the risk when I took this job lieutenant."
In Dent's arrogance, he truly did not know the risk.
Exactly
LMAOOOOO I LOVE U GUYS TOGETHER ISWEAR
Thank you!
Still likely the best comic book movie ever made. This tackles so much thematically and socially
I agree
Loving all of the rewatch series and interviews. Once The Batman is here have you guys thought about what's next? I dobn't know if you'd be open to it since the newest scream already came and went but it'd be cool to see rewatch tackle that or maybe the mainline Conjuring films. Keep up the great work!!
Tons of ideas!
I believe the interrogation room scene is where Heath sealed the deal that he would win the Oscar
So good
My only critiques for The Dark Knight is that their's an editing error in the garage scene when you see Batman for the first time and I do prefer Katie Holmes over Maggie Gyllenhaal
Me too
I want Coy's shirt, Winston's jacket, and Kristian's ability to use the I wish knew sound bite.
I do my own rewatches of this trilogy and when I come back to Dark Knight I ask myself "It can't be as good as I thought it was right?" And it's as good if not better. Ugh this film is great
Hahah
@@TheKristianHarloff Still love you brother 🤟 and TBH it gets funny again
Well said man I was so sad when heath ledger died it’s all we can talk about my high
School the next day
Ya
I love how the "Show a little class" thing is turning into a real bit. xD
Haha
People who say this movie is overrated are like people who say The Beatles are overrated. I mean it is fine if you don't like either, however the way they say it is almost always with an unearned pride and edginess which always comes off as comical. It's like they want a special cookie for disliking something almost everyone else likes.
True
I've always thought it "Hockey pants" too 😂😂😂
Haha
Sometimes I scroll through the comments sections of videos looking for comments that end in question marks so that I can reply "I wish I knew." I'm an engine of chaos, see. It's all part of the plan.
Some men just want to watch the world burn (excellent use of this power)
Ha
There's a deleted scene where Joker uses the plant from Batman Begins to make deadly laughing gas. i wish they would've left it in because I like that it implies he has a connection to Ra's without getting specific. He could've trained him, he could've just helped or just maybe the scarecrow inspired him
Maybe too close to Jack Napier?
James Newton Howard is co-credited on The Dark Knight score. As I understood it, he handled the Dent stuff, Hans did the Joker stuff and methinks both did Bats.
Nice
I still can not believe that this was not nominated for Best Picture. The fact the Oscar's are still haunted by this is hilarious. Christian Bale is terrific in this movie, when he punches Joker, the rage in him, how is face turns red full of rage, hes so good in this moive, he is amazing and of course Heath. 20/10 movie.
Totally agree
GREAT POINTS! And yes Coy's Heath Ledger points were awesome to hear.
Bale is a great actor but I don't know why he had to pick the throat-cancered voice as Batman in the Dark Knight, when his lower toned raspy voice in Batman Begins was better.
I hope you guys rewatch bvs interested to know your guys thoughts on it .
Maybe closer to The Flash
@@TheKristianHarloff o alright
Amen to Coy on the Heath Ledger bit
Good points.
Did you guys call William Fichtner...William Friedkin? 😂😂😭😭
Sure did (farts and makes sure no one is around)
Watched the movie for the sake of this video. So awesome, you guys are great. I was so excited to watch this again and ready to hear your thoughts. #iwishiknew
Glad you enjoyed it!
Trivia question for you Kristian who are the 2 actors in this film that were also in The Breakfast Club?
Anthony Michael Hall and Ron Dean
@@TheKristianHarloff Correct
My neighbor tried to get me on that years ago
James Newton Howard worked on Begins & Dark Knight
Nice
“Coy, I’m sorry. The audio was off. Can you say that again?” Lololol
Haha
Hockey Pants is my new favorite thing. I’d never heard it, now I can’t unhear it.
Hahaha
Agreed, loved how fast
@@TheKristianHarloff campyness went out da winder (window)
Love the rewatch series, guys! You guys are definitely getting a lot of Batman origin stories and we haven’t even seen the Robert Battison version yet so I get if you guys take a break in March, but a lot of people think the Batman TAS movie ‘Mask of the Phantasm’ is the best Batman movie period. Pretty sure it’s less than 90 minutes and has some truly terrific animation
Not sure why you guys skipped it but it’s definitely worth a watch, what are you guys waiting for?
“I wish I knew.”
Gonna be a Patreon Exclusive!
It’s definitely up there 👆 I think the animated dark knight returns part 1 & 2 deserve mention too as they are great animated Batman stories too 🎥
Lol Everything Coy Sad about heath ledger is absolutely true. I love when Christian Harloff said the audio was off I couldn’t stop laughing. 🤣
:)
Wow. What a coincidence. I just watched this yesterday. Still can’t believe that it wasn’t nominated for Best Picture. Also, heath ledger’s joker is so much better than Joaquin Phoenix’s version.
Loved Phoenix but Ledger is something else.
Great episode fellas
Thanks and happy to have ya back, but let's get all your thoughts into one big paragraph! haha
@@TheKristianHarloff That would be a long ass comment
Never realized Anthony Michael Hall was in this moivie.
If you end up still doing the rewatch I suggest a movie 2 Guns with Denzel Washington and Mark Walburg. Just a fun movie with great chemistry between them.
Good one!
Do what I can to help the channel
Yep, after all these years, I've confidently quoted, "...hocky pants!" haha!
Classic
i love this movie but my biggest complaint is that I wished we got a scene with the joker and Bruce Wayne,
Good call
The dark Knight trilogy and the back to the future trilogy are the best trilogy‘s ever!
Yeah I love it
The movie has aged so well.
Still looks clean and prestine.
Practical effects
So good
a question for you guys .. if the dark knight rises came out today how much would it make at the box office? the same or NWH numbers?
Hmmm hard to answer, landscape is different
I'll say that it would still hit the billion dollar mark
@@ChrisWoodburn83 i meant to write the dark knight not tdk rises.. i think that tdk would have done 1.5 billion
@@chukit6654 Completely agree
Woukd T2 make the same money today ??
Coy just got one thing wrong. Gillian Loeb is the name of the Comissioner in the Batman Year One comic. So, the name is not a nod to Jeph Loeb, just a coincidence. As Batman Begins was heavily inspired in Batman Year One they kept the Comissioner's name from the comic, but changed his personality completely, and he went on to appear in The Dark Knight too.
Thank you!
Aaron eckhart was fantastic as Harvey Dent but before he was cast Matt Damon was offered the role and I've always wondered why he turned it down
Hmmm interesting
I have a specific relationship with this movie, it was the first time I kissed a girl in a movie theater. I remember not thinking much of the movie at the time (probably because I wasn't paying much attention lol) but I could watch this movie infinitely on repeat and still enjoy it.
I love it
38:50 Harvey is lucky that Twitter hasn't been created yet ohh my so funny Kristian Lmao
Haha
Heath was amazing in the movie and he absolutely deserved the Oscar but it really sucks that he never got to enjoy the fruits of his labor
