If you know anything about Billy Cobham; this feels like an ode to him. Danny has definitely said that Cobham was an influence for him. And if you listen to Mahavishnu Orchestra with Cobham, you hear a LOT of what Danny does. This is very Cobham's "Spectrum" to me.

Danny has a book about his collection of synthesizers. Not exactly sure which one's he using using on this, or takes on tour these days, so I won't speculate. Ever since Danny has started using any type of electronica, he's talked about expanding his vocabulary exponentially without the encumberance of additional pieces added to his kit. This album highlights that. Not only in Danny's case but the band as a whole. Both Adam and Justin's use of synth and effect pedals and Maynards vocals effects are all culmination of each individuals accumulation and expansion of their vocabularies over the course of their careers. That is what stands out front and center on this particular album. It totally boggles my mind how they can reproduce the complexity, depth, expansiveness and immersive qualities of the recorded audio, into the concert experience. Few bands can take their music from the studio to the stage and recreate the warmth and beauty you get at a live show. That is why seeing them live is so fullfilling and a must for any music aficionado. Can't wait for your thoughts and reaction to Tempest.✌🤘
Just Danny doing Danny stuff. Not too many drummers get to have their own tracks on albums…. What a dream to play with a drummer like Danny and a small handful of others over the years that bring the whole package of ability and musicality and composition.
The producer, Joe Barresi, was quoted as saying: > "The studio we were at used to bake us these chocolate cookies all the time, and Danny called his drum solo on the album 'Chocolate Chip Trip,' based on the fact that all we did was eat chocolate chip cookies. I like it even more after knowing that little morsel.
Your journey through this album has so many similarities to my first listen party in my mates studio on the monitors.. from the relief and joy of Fear Innoculum being awesome in the first few phrases, the boiling up of emotion at the same moment for mysterious moment in Pnema. Then the ride that followed. Laughing and being amazed and thankful that these 4 found each other and created this for all of us. No many bands can do this. But it's a trap. It made all the other music I had been listening to between albums kind of ring hollow. Now I struggle to find anything new that gets my juices flowing. But I am thankful that I got to experience my first listen again through you. I thank you for your insights as well.
So apparently Danny was charged with misdemeanor assault charges at an airport in Kansas today..... can you imagine pissing that dude off? Seems to be a sweetheart of a giant man. Might I suggest Punch Brothers - Familiarity (live). :)

For me, Chocolate Chip Trip is like an amalgam of Neil Peart and Keith Emerson, and I love it. It's mad scientist shit!
