Can you tell me why that simple little wood block sound between 18:55 and 19:11 (on your video) is so amazing? It's such a simple little sound, but it's so incredible - why?? I'd love to know your opinion.
I assume the conversation with the label went something like this. You made a 17-minute song no radio station will play it? Radio hasn't really ever played our shit anyway! You're right do it lol
@@claytonbearden7793 I think we might get one more but by one more I'm thinking probably like five songs and they don't really have to put out albums I mean they could be productive and make Amazing Music just putting out singles as they get done which is kind of the blueprint now for lots of artists
Since you bring up Led Zeppelin, you might want to check out Tool's cover of No Quarter from their live album Salival if you haven't already. They do exactly what you praise them for here and take the old song but make it sound like a Tool original.
Love 7empest - what a rock epic. Incredibly complicated and technically brilliant composition. You asked where it was recorded - apparently every Tool album has been recorded in Danny's music space in LA, and mastered at one of the local studios.
Interesting that no-one has mentioned the King Crimson reference in 7empest, yet. The shifting polyrhythmic lines from the intro are almost 100% straight from their 1981 'Frame By Frame', only slowed down. If I remember correctly, it was Fripp and Adrian Belew playing in 15/8 vs 14/8 against each other, or something similar, only playing in unison whenever the two metres lined up. So there you have it, Crimson and Zeppelin combined in one epic song, a match made in heaven.
I'm glad you mentioned King Crimson. The first time I heard this, I immediately recognised the similarity with Frame by Frame. Tool soon transform it to their signature epic sound.
Lots of fun. I’ve seen lots of reviewers (I’m not sure why) but some are not good. I watched your whole series and it was great. Lots of small notes you made that me (as a non musician) don’t hear.
It's a reference to completion or perfection in numerology. Tool is heavily influenced by kabbalah and occultism and the themes are in most of the music. The "Tempest" is a great storm, like the flood in the book of Genesis in Torah where the earth was destroyed and then restored. This explains a lot about the song's lyrics and rhythms.
The "7" in "7empest", the way I choose to see it, represents it being the 7th song on the album with lyrics (counting "Legion Inoculant"). Some could say that "Legion Inoculant" doesn’t count as a song with lyrics when the only lyrics are samples from the title track, but to that I just say keep in mind that throughout all of the different CD and vinyl versions TOOL left out "Litanie contre la Peur" but kept "Legion Inoculant"!
I must admit, I never really listened to Tool at all, but listening to this album has convinced me to check out their Discography. For me, 'Pneuma' is the most powerful song on the album though and I can't stop listening to it!
I was the same way I had a friend who is a huge tool fan. Introduced me about a year before this album came out. Once I heard this album I was fully invested.
The sense of completion at the end of song with the last fills from Danny, unparalleled. Amazing reaction John, you did awesome on this Fear Inoculum journey. I can tell you did love the album and especially the last two songs (Culling Voices & 7empest), at least with your first listen. The engineering on this album is just out of this world to me. 7empest is the final boss of Fear Inoculum, just like Third Eye was to Aenema, the Holy Trinity to Lateralus and Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned to 10,000 Days. Everybody is at their A-game here but just look at Adam, shining with his talent and Les Paul. Going full solo for 4 minutes in the middle of the song and it's not even a real "solo" per se. It's just so well blended into the song. Playing this on guitar, I just have a blast every single time. 16-minutes song here, did you even notice it ? I didn't. And I've played and listened to it at least a 1000 times by now. Still Mocking Beat left before closing this amazing Fear Inoculum chapter. With these lasts reactions videos, you really built up your TOOL fanbase I can guarantee you ahah. If you're feeling like it, it would be awesome to have you react (again) to the previous albums, I'm sure you don't remember all their songs from then so just share your journey with us. I know I won't be the only one suggesting this to you. Keep it up ! NB : do not skip their video ad on Adam 1979 Les Paul signature guitar called "The Witness". It's Adam, Justin and Danny (only Maynard missing) for 7 minutes straight of pure bliss, just for an ad !
It's interesting that you said that "Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned" is the 'final boss' on "10,000 Days" because in my mind it is "Intension/Right In Two". I love "LK/RS" too, but as far as songs that put a stamp on it, "Intension/Right In Two" would be my pick for that album.
Thanks, that was some real insight. Oh, and I’m so jealous that you can play guitar along to this. I play bass, but am nowhere near good enough to even attempt to emulate Justin. I can dream, though…
@@gosborg No problem ! I am not the best guitarist in the world for sure but being passionate about TOOL and guitar just made me find the will to keep pushing forward to learn the songs I guess. It really helps if you can find some material to help you. TH-cam is a great example. Maybe you know already but check LeoBassCovers TH-cam channel, he is a great bass player who does tabs for bass. For guitar there is Max Niessl, without all the work he put in doing those guitar tabs I would not have been able to learn all these songs !
Maybe it's just me, but the break after the first solo reminds me so much of Ted Nudgent's "Stranglehold ". Tool has made lyrical reference to Mr. Nugent before. "Got you in a Stranglehold baby!"
18:55 it is a china cymbal, it actually blew my mind how Danny's playing that 4/4 over the 21/8 breakdown or whatever time sig it is the first time I heard it
The best part of the song for me, i always get crazy with that cymbal and all that groove!!!! Oh, and the guitar solo that comes with that groove!!! How you can't be a fan after listen to this album??
@23:15 When I first heard this part I got chills because it is a subtle homage to Tool's 2nd album UNDERTOW. Listen to the song Undertow @5:10 , you'll hear what I mean.
Thoroughly enjoyed your reviews of FI. I heard Tool for the first time in May. I've been obsessed ever since. I'm 53 and a lifelong Rush, prog and metal fan. Thrilled to be experiencing Tool and watching knowledgeable reviewers experiencing them too. Astonishing band. Great channel, I'll be sticking around.
Lets gooo, you finally got to tempest. When you mentioned that tempest's intro riff sounds like muse I had never seen it like that. Its spot on though, muse is also my favorite band followed by tool, so that was a cool comparison, these reactions are sick!
I'm a non-musician who loves music so a lot of what you talk about is over my head but I still enjoy your reactions to this amazing song and this phenomenal band. Every time I hear this song some new element jumps out at me and I'm flummoxed and excited anew... That's tool for you
Holy Cow your so talented arencha?!!! Wow! I'd love to just have the investment you made in your music between the instruments n the CD's! I love yr TOOL reactions almost as much as your brogue my Irish brethren. See u on the nxt 1
Not sure why but this song actually tears me up. I have always preferred their slower more cognitive songs but this one is their masterpiece. The energy and groove it takes for these 50 and 60 year old dudes to pull this off is astounding.
They recorded this at Henson Recording - Los Angeles, The Loft - Los Angeles and United Recording - Los Angeles. It was mastered in my home state of Maine, US by Bob Ludwig who also mastered 10,000 Days. Love the content man!
I've been a tool fan since back when Undertow came out. They've been my favorite band since then, regardless of how long it had been between albums. One of my favorite things about them is that each album is an evolution from the last. They may give you a taste of what's to come on each album (like a song that stands out as a little different at the time, but rests completely within the next album) while still maintaining a full album feel throughout. One thing I noticed in my first listen to this song is how much the breakdown at around the 11:30 mark harkens back to the Undertow album. It feels like they took a step back in time for just that section of music. Absolutely love this track...
according to what i've read, a lot of the riffs may well have come from as far back as that. adam is a stickler for logging/remembering riffs and a good idea is never discarded, merely filed for possible future use.
I'd love to see your reaction/breakdown of any of Tool's other albums, even if it wasn't your first listen. I always appreciate your musical insight and enthusiasm! Looking forward to more Tool!
They recorded the drums at Henson Recording Studios (formerly A&M Studios) where the Rolling Stones recorded Gimme Shelter and The Police recorded Reggatta de Blanc + a bunch of classic recordings.
Love this song, Adam goes off, Danny is immense as usual, Maynard’s vocals are intense and I love how Justin holds it down and still Mankato make his presence felt in the (very small) gaps between the others’ playing. Bring some more Tool on John, see you on the next one.
Thanks for going through this entire album. Please re-visit the Best Tool songs I'd love to get your take on them! The song Lateralus is a mathematical equation everyone loves 😏
why that simple, tiny, wood block sound between 18:55 and 19:11 so amazing? No really, I'm fascinated that such a little sound makes it so hardcore - someone tell me!
Your sound production comes across better than any other 'reaction' channel I've listened to. I don't know why, maybe you're using better sound equipment than others, but it is appreciated. Plus... I'm a sucker for an English accent.
Really enjoyed your journey on this album! You can now listen to the whole album whenever you want to! Before any original Tool song reaction I suggest you check out Tool’s cover of ZEP No Quarter. Tool on!
Everytime I listen to this songs intro I can't stop thinking about the "L Theme" from the anime Death Note, they're quite similar and I enjoy that so much.
Love your appreciation of music and the way you feel it. You've pointed out a few things that I had not noticed before. There is something very similar in the way you experience music to another TH-cam 'reaction' person - Key of Geebz. It would be super interesting to hear both of you talk music with your obvious knowledge and feel for the topic.
Yo bro that calathea in top right corner is not looking too happy, you need to increase the humidity in your room. Btw, I watched your whole fear inoculum series. Killer reaction videos dude. You seem to recognize a lot in the first listen.
Much Love i love how you let the song play. Your pauses are appropriate and your comments are gold. I can listen to you analyze the song and still appreciate it as the song as well. I also notice you make the quality of the audio on par with what your hearing. Thank you
Wow. Finished your reaction to all the songs on Fear Inoculum. I am so appreciative of your skill. You've helped me fall sickly into a very good place of passion for this album.
Really like your Tool reactions, that's what brought me to your channel. I've been tool army since 93', when I heard Sober(Don't think you've done one that one yet, it's off their first full album Undertow, the live performance from the Reading festival is awesome), it blew me away. The bass line and the way Danny's drives the song forward with his high hat, it was unlike anything out at the time. I hope you do more Tool, you won't be disappointed. Go back to Opiate, EP 92', you can see the development. I would like to see you react to another favorite of my from the 90's. Helmet. Heavy bass and drum driven. Killer guitar riffs and great outro's. For a album reaction I suggest "Betty"... songs I suggest...1. Milquetoast...2. Unsung...3 In the meantime...4. Tic Another must do is...Rage Against the Machine...Funk metal with one of the most unique guitarist ever, a rap like Singer and Anti establishment lyrics. Keep up the good work.... Spiral out...keep going...
So obviously we don’t know each other. But I really enjoyed your content and felt like I had shared a musical experience with you. Thanks man. Subbed. Of course.
This track is everything from them, from all the way back from Opiate, right untill this point in time. If you know their discography, this track is a throwback to all of them
I'VE BEEN BANGING ON ABOUT THIS AND MUSE!!! Thank you for justifying my existence 👍😂😂 Also old muse... Musically.... Pure Art. Still love the new stuff but my their old stuff made me feel things only Zep could make me feel
Have watched more than a few reactions, and honestly have enjoyed your series the most. You appreciate the music first without trying to solve the lyrical puzzle (which destroys many a reaction vid). Now you can research and re-enjoy them at your own pace. If you want to delve into further mathematical genius, try Lateralus by Tool next. Loudwire listed it as #1 on the Top 50 Best Metal Songs of the 21st Century, and a huge reason for it comes down the the math behind the song (from many angles). You may want to read up on the song first before listening to it (this won't spoil your reaction, only open it further as to the "why") as your ear will then be able to pick up sequencing details layered and throughout. Enjoy your journey!
Have to give Lateralus another spin soon, it's about 20 years since I first heard it, and a hell of a long time since I last heard it too! Thank you very much for the kind words, dude.
I was a roadie doing lightning, watched, and meant with many of rock auditorium be rock stars from 1967 to 1974. Auditorium or out door consert. Lots electric power.
I'm not that familiar with Tool - a bit more so with A Perfect Circle, but I really enjoyed watching through this album with you and seeing you as a musician really appreciating it all.
Damn, the comments you get on your videos are just so good. You have some knowledgeable and insightful viewers and I think that is a complement to you.
No other band sounds like TooL. I’ve been listening to TooL for 25 years now, and somehow they always manage to kill it better than the last time. Instrumentally including Maynard as an instrument they just continue to improve. It’s literally amazing. Also I love watching you react to there music. 🤘🏼
Have you listened to the Salival album? If you haven't the pushit version on that album will blow you away. And their cover of led Zeppelin no quarter..since you got a zep vibe at the beginning of this song
Definitely check that out, it's a must own for any tool fan. Got the box set on release, no regrets. Love the reactions by the way. My favorite band TOOL!!!!!!!
Thanks! Truly great reaction videos. Nice to see someone else with the same emotional connection to the music as myself. Few songs bring me to tears. This album had three, on the first listen! Good Job! Well done.
I so enjoy your unique perspective coupled with your enthusiasm. You really enhance the experience and enjoyment of the song. As to 7empest itself, it is simply mesmeric. A true masterpiece. I think Shakespeare would have loved it and I’m sure the reference is intentional.
I will for sure come back and visit to watch you listen to this album multiple times. Much appreciation. I have given your music a try, but because I teach kids the happy, major shit every day…I need the darker, minor to balance. I’ll keep at it though! High five and thank you!
Danny usually records these in 1 go with no click! You can even hear them messing with him on the song Undertow trying to mess him up, at the end you can vaguely hear him call them assholes and throws a stick at em
Adam Jones is a genius in how he uses the guitar for textures instead of riffs. He lets Justin Chancellor handle the riffs, which he does with absolute brilliance. This entire album is outstanding. I think it's also interesting that there's so little Maynard on the album. I can't help but wonder if he has become aware of the Tool reaction crowd, who so often focuses on him and Danny Carey, and decided to step back even more than he normally does to let the rest of the band take more of the spotlight. He doesn't really like it anyway.
Great reaction, understanding of music.. I heard the song Jambi by tool in a compilation of heavy rock bands. Blew me away... been playing them every since.. Gutted I missed them for years.. They get better with every listen..so much to them.. Watch the Danny Carey pneuma vids..phenomenal.. He did mention it was partly mathematical..for me can't hear it & don't matter cause it all works together..the journey of the songs. Reminds me of a cross or mixture or Metallica + Yes + led zeppelin but brought up to date..just awesome.. Nirvana have always been top band for me but can't stop playing these guys songs...got everything. Hope that makes sense..just had to say it..

"It's not a vanity thing. It's just art."
Well said! ❤️
The seven time signature is the very reason Tool used it as their song title, "7" for 7empest. Maynard's a word meister!!
"It's not a vanity thing, it's just... art." Best comment and compliment I've heard about Adam, and Tool in general.
Underrated comment. Well said. By him and you.
The “Control your delusions” part from Maynard at the end always gets me. The added parts in the background are so good.

There is something very similar in the way you experience music to another TH-cam 'reaction' person - Key of Geebz. It would be super interesting to hear both of you talk music with your obvious knowledge and feel for the topic.
I truly enjoy watching you give me different perspective on a band iv been enjoying for 30 years
Keep on
Cheers, Mike! 🤘
The absolute masters of TONE!
Yo bro that calathea in top right corner is not looking too happy, you need to increase the humidity in your room.
Btw, I watched your whole fear inoculum series. Killer reaction videos dude. You seem to recognize a lot in the first listen.
Yeah man, it's freezing here. Basically no humidity! It needs some tlc!
Much Love i love how you let the song play. Your pauses are appropriate and your comments are gold. I can listen to you analyze the song and still appreciate it as the song as well. I also notice you make the quality of the audio on par with what your hearing. Thank you
Love muse
Wow. Finished your reaction to all the songs on Fear Inoculum. I am so appreciative of your skill. You've helped me fall sickly into a very good place of passion for this album.
Thank you very much for your kind words. And I’m impressed you watched them all. Kudos to you!
The held note at 13:34 is so Adam. Iconic.
Early Muse is amazing.
Great reactions to a great album. Hope you'd continue with more of Gojira's journey after this.
Tic
Another must do is...Rage Against the Machine...Funk metal with one of the most unique guitarist ever, a rap like Singer and Anti establishment lyrics.
Keep up the good work....
Spiral out...keep going...
To me you have fantastic musical sensibilities. I'll for sure watch any Tool you do lol!
Phenomenal job once again. Absolute pleasure watching this 😊
I'm not that familiar with Tool - a bit more so with A Perfect Circle, but I really enjoyed watching through this album with you and seeing you as a musician really appreciating it all.
This music soothes my soul 😊
Creativity at all and most artistic disciplines
glad i could watch you experience it my man
Have you listened to the Salival album? If you haven't the pushit version on that album will blow you away. And their cover of led Zeppelin no quarter..since you got a zep vibe at the beginning of this song
Haven't heard their version of no quarter. My favourite led zep song!
Oooooohhhhh...you are gonna dig it.
And if you haven't heard salival version of pushit, a song I am sure you are familiar with..it is TOTALLY different!
@@JWSoundworks2 omg listen to it!!
Definitely check that out, it's a must own for any tool fan. Got the box set on release, no regrets. Love the reactions by the way. My favorite band TOOL!!!!!!!
25:30 .... That absolutely did not feel like the longest song. 🤘
TOOL are a group of musical alchemists. 😉💚🌀💙
Tool doesn't Math. Math does Tool.
the 8 min solo is mind bending thats for sure on to the next album you tool army member now
The section at 16:13 in your video always reminds me of Within from Kiss
Ahhhh HELLOOO MY PEOPLE!!! 👋🤘
Art indeed sir👌
Can't wait for the "NO QUARTER" cover Reaction. 🤞✌
Thanks!
Truly great reaction videos. Nice to see someone else with the same emotional connection to the music as myself.
Few songs bring me to tears. This album had three, on the first listen!
Good Job! Well done.
This is masterpiece and more tool song it masterpiece GOAT
I so enjoy your unique perspective coupled with your enthusiasm. You really enhance the experience and enjoyment of the song. As to 7empest itself, it is simply mesmeric. A true masterpiece. I think Shakespeare would have loved it and I’m sure the reference is intentional.
you need to see them live. awesome
Would love to see you do the rest of the Tool albums. Loved all these reactions.
I will for sure come back and visit to watch you listen to this album multiple times. Much appreciation. I have given your music a try, but because I teach kids the happy, major shit every day…I need the darker, minor to balance. I’ll keep at it though! High five and thank you!
Try his band - Diamir

Fellow Secret Lab owner. Love these chairs! And Tool, of course
You are a treasure my man.
I'm all in for any Tool you want do. You seem to really appreciate all aspects of the music, which is a joy to watch 👍
What a journey, thnx my man, I relived this álbum with you.
Whenerver you have a chance check, Eternity's Breath pt1 & 2 from Mahavishnu Orchestra one if not the best son ever made (for me at least)
Sacred Geometry, I believe is the motif..behind lots of the music and album art.
Great reaction,understanding of music..
