    Their personalities actually diverted a bit in future episodes. Ralph became a little more serious and responsible yet also hotheaded and reckless. Donny became more snarky, confident, and sarcastic. Mikey is basically the same classic cinnamon roll, and Leo is cool and laid back, but is hinted that he truly is more logical and reasonable than the others.

      Really? I’m thinking abt buying the series on itunes, but I’m not completely sold yet. If their characteristics actually improve, I’d be much happier. Some ppl complain abt April not being the white redhead everyone knows, and while I find this show’s changes to her a bit odd, if her character is done a little better, I think she could be a more likable April than some of the other shows’ own.

    I can understand the confusion as to why Raphael is so big compared to his brothers, but keep in mind that in this rewriting instead of the four turtles being of the same species their actually different types of turtles: Leo is a red eared slider, Mickey is a box turtle, Donnie is a soft shell turtle and Raphael is an alligator snapping turtle, which is significantly larger.

    The show has gotten a LOT better since it's been revealed there actually is an underlying story arc (a HUGE difference from Teen Titans Go). The biggest improvement is probably Splinter. He still has less than stellar moments, but it's shown he truly does love the Turtles and is making a much better effort in teaching them. I think what I like most about him is the fact we're still asking questions about him. We learned nearly everything about 2012 Splinter in that show's first few episodes. This Splinter has a lot more mystery surrounding him and while I can't say he's better than other Splinters, he's distinct and I appreciate it a lot. Eric Bauza's performance as him also endears me to him. I like him as Splinter just as much as Tiger Claw.

    • @OmegaX9
      @OmegaX9 4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      There’s a very big problem with that argument though, in that you have to keep watching through less interesting episodes. Honestly for me it was the same way with Steven universe, and even though I eventually got to watch the show and enjoy it I still won’t go back and watch the first 10 or so episodes because they’re so much less than what the show is later. It’s why shows usually start off with their best material and if they’re episodic then usually the least interesting parts will come in the middle after people have already gotten hooked on the show.

    • @phlpcockrell
      @phlpcockrell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Because most of the problems people have are addressed by around episode 7. (Which is ten whole 11 minute segments between episode 1 and 7) a lot of those 10 episodes are important to world building and character development, but you don't realize that on first watch. Like the episode "repo mantis" establishes repo mantis as an antagonist, best recurring character Todd, and gets the turtles the Jupiter Jim moon buggy, which will later become the turtle tank. But on first watch none of that is important. "Longest fight" officially kicks off the dark armor/shredder storyline, but doesn't establish that until half a season later. Though if you don't like the character designs or art style there's no getting around that. It's just legitimate criticism

    I think Splinter is actually one of the best parts of the show. He grows and develops along with his sons, he's flawed and makes mistakes, but he keeps learning from them just as much as his sons do. That's another thing, his sons. He's not their detached sensei. He's their father first and foremost and their teacher second. That's why the turtles get to call him Dad, Pops, etc. , because their relationship with him and with each other is so much closer and openly affectionate than any other iteration. He cares about them all equally and doesn't show favoritism. just... oh man, there's so much to say about this version of Splinter. this show is so goddamn good. I'd love to talk about how much they improved on all other characters but it'd be too long, and I think Splinter's was one of the best/most underrated changes that Rise made to the franchise.

    I love this show, and the characters, and the animation, and the voice acting, it's ART. The first episode makes sure to CLEARLY set its tone, but it's sad that people had such a negative reaction to it just because of its fresh, unique, new take on the series. You get to know the characters throughout the season, not in the first half hour of knowing them. This isn't a show with a continuous plot, and it's very episodic, but there's no use in disliking a show because it's not something you're familiar with.

    • @phlpcockrell
      @phlpcockrell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      The more u watch it the more you realize its not that episodic. Even if it's not as plot driven as 2012. Like "repo mantis" introduces repo mantis, Tod, the best side character, it gives us a stealth cameo of his kitty "Mrs nubbins" pre-mutation and the Jupiter Jim moon buggy that becomes the turtle tank. A lot of episodes that come off as "filler" for lack of a better term, on first glance have stuff that comes back later. Though there is still some "filler", like "down with the sickness"

      That tends to be a thing I've noticed a lot: whenever people tend to see a lot of the same thing, they become accustomed to that. And when the creators attempt to deviate from the norm, they get upset because it's not the same, regardless of it's actual quality. I've seen this happen with Disney Movies, video games, and now this. Have you seen it anywhere or is it just me?

      @@Steven9567 I disagree. He very much is when it counts. For all his bad jokes and laid-back attitude he still has his strategic skills, though not quite as honed as in previous versions, he still (mostly) tends to be the responsible one, especially if Raph is out of the picture, and, compared to others, is actually quite composed. He can be annoying or annoyed, disappointed, competitive, but I don't think I've ever seen him fully angered once. Like, when Raph chides someone he can be intimidating, or he can be irritated, or he can yell. But Leo, on the rare occasions he deems it necessary, just goes into that parental I-am-expecting-to-be-obeyed mode which is quite effective. I actually enjoy what they did to the character, it's a nice change (not that I don't like the other Leos, he's usually my favorite as well).

      What you call stylish, I call incredibly simplistic. It's a LOT easier to draw this than the old cartoon. There is actually minimal animation happening, just a lot of movement. But ALL the detail work? Gone. It's like anime now, which is probably why they went with it. Hopefully it'll be good, but it's definitely not for me.

      You still have old show here. It is hard to complain about Rise when you have alternatives. Speaking about Teen Titans Go the reason why people are pissed is that it isn't just dumb spin off, but it is instead anticipated relaunch of previous series (or at least proper reboot). Plus despite mentioned flaws (what can be repaired over time) Rise in fact is well written and animated for the most part. For example what NC miss is that mutations in town were caused by those mutating Mosquito as we do see them later.

Like the little jabs at each other and the competitions. I think people forget that the TMNT genre has already established that there's multi-universes so why wouldn't there be a universe where they can be different turtles, Raphael is the leader and their personalities are similar. Or even the fact that splinter is still a great fighter but not necessarily a great dad at least until later on when he realizes the benefits of being a parent. I actually love the fact that he was still stuck in his old ways and missing the Glory Days a bit until he realizes that he needs to grow up. Why would we expect the Ninja turtles to grow up if their dad hadn't even done it yet.

The new intro never describes any of them as the “party dude” so it doesn’t set up anyone to be that wild persona, so it doesn’t matter that all of them are wise cracks (even though if you pay attention they all have different senses of humor) Also so many of the incarnations forget the “teenage” part of the TMNT. The turtles feel more like teenagers than they have in any other incarnation except maybe 2012.

    Imma inject some positivity towards Rise into this comment section
    I didn't know about this until NC did this review of the episode and I'm honestly really glad I decided to watch more by myself. I've even gotten some friends hooked on it and we watch together!
    And as much as I can get why NC says they've got the same personality he's definitely exaggerating how indistinguishable they are after those first available episodes. The first episode could have handled presenting the characters better, including those bug transformation guys but from then on the teens get more and more recognisablely unique traits that stay consistent throughout the show and that are more apparent on a rewatch of the first episode, and a roster of honestly interesting villains builds up fast, including my personal favourite, a foot recruit who takes the honour of her job more seriously than her trainers who behave almost like a married couple half the time.
    Plus a consistent story starts going pretty damn quickly after those first 4, considering the episodes are all 11 minutes, including a really interesting backstory for Splinter and the boys. So yeah it was clearly planned to be the same idea as Adventure Time instead of Teen Titans Go.

    • @phlpcockrell

      People who compare this to teen titans go forget teen titans exists. Teen titans was a huge departure from its predecessors in terms of art style and animation, (Super friends, justice league, etc) focused more on humor (the team are turned into animals and forced to perform.. a magic gremlin pops out of Robin's forehead..) and unlike Rise, was COMPLETELY episodic. (Except for a few through lines with villains like brother blood, and I think season 4) Rise isn't Teen Titans Go. It's Teen Titans.

    Mikey is the sensitive artist. He's the most likely to be scared and the one who is most comfortable showing his vulnerable side. Ralph is the dimwitted but responsible one. He views himself as the big brother and he's very protective of the other three while also looking for their approval. Leonardo is gloryseeker. He thrives on attention from his brothers and from the world and he's constantly scheming to get it. Don is the cynical mad scientist, who actually acts as though he's intelligent, even if he's got the same base drives as his brothers.
    The personalities are different, but they're definitely distinct. And unlike most incarnations, there's more emphasis on them being a family of best friends rather than a team of superheroes who work together.

      @@BrowningThirty And that is exactly the irony of your statement. You blame the Rise turtles for being party dudes because this is "out of character" for you. But you knew Raph as the one that does one liners and is suite chill, while someone else would know him as the angsty loner but still nice like the one from that 3D movie. Or just very impulsive and short tempered like 2012 Raph. While Rise Raph is basically a teddy bear.
      Some people will remember Donnie as a more humble and shy turtle (87 and 2003) while others would only knew the simp, snarky Donnie (2012) or the full-on mad scientist with daddy issues that is Rise Donnie.
      But they're all still Donnie.
      See? Different personality in each iteration. Why are you all acting like Rise screwed every characterization while they changed all the time?
      The only exception on hightly diverting a character is Splinter.
      In Rise, he actually gets to be a character, with flaws and growth and his own arc, instead of being a plot-device.

    Truthfully, I don't have a problem with the animation, that the turtles are different shapes and sizes or that April O Neil is African American this time around. I'm more concerned about this version of Master Splinter. Splinter has (for the most part) always been the badass yet kindly and wise father figure in the Turtles' lives. Here, he seems like a lazy, deadbeat uncaring father who doesn't see his adoptive sons' potential to be heroes in a half shell. If this is supposed to be played for laughs--I don't find it very funny and if they stick with this concept, it's going to get stale very fast.

    2003 is still the top best in the series, it had the personalities correct and likable, the animation style was beautiful, action-packed and almost realistic, the jokes were solid, it had the most good seasons in a TMNT show, the villains were actually dangerous threats that could be taken seriously (Stockman, Bishop and Shredder for example), and most importantly the show didn't Pander too much to nostalgia and attempted to be more original while still being faithful to the Turtle's rooted origins in the Mirage comics, and Japanese subculture.

    The turtles are different species in this show so that explains the size difference. And if you keep watching you’d see they have their own personalities- The writers just played around with their roles this time around so it’s not the same formula every single time. Honestly I’m glad Raph was given a chance to be leader for once and they all grow as the show goes on, plus you see they *do* have their own personalities fairly quick and the show gets so much fucking better as it goes, especially in the finales. They’re teenagers and siblings so they all like to have fun while doing their missions and with each other, or they get cocky lol, so ofc they aren’t always serious and I’m fine with that cause they’re all hilarious and cool in their own ways. Also all the villains but Shredder are original- how awesome is that?? Seriously Critic and anyone else, keep watching it, I swear it’s fucking awesome 95% of the time.

    There are some complaints I have with this video, which are:
    1. The turtles are different species now. Raph is a snapping turtle, which is the reason why he's bigger than the rest. Donnie is a softshell turtle, which is why he has a mechanic shell. It's there to protect his soft shell(at least that's what I believe is the reason)
    2. The show I think will be sort of like Steven Universe, where it starts out rough, but with some solid points, but becomes a very plot-driven show. Again, at least that's how I see it.
    3. Character developement. I am certain that over the course of the show, the turtles will be more developed and grow up. I believe they'll change into different characters.
    4. Yes, Raph is the leader now. Which is great in my eyes. Leo and Raph have had a rivalry for a while now, and most of the time Raph was just jealous of Leo's position as the leader. Let me put this in your eyes: Raph screws up and Leo is now the leader. Raph doesn't just want to be the leader. He was the leader and had that taken away from him. See, that just gets me excited about the show.
    5. Mutants are there because the mosquitos flew all over the city.
    6. This is my biggest complaint. The rest were mad up of a lot of speculation. This show is I believe 4 or 5 episodes in its run. I think it's too early to judge this show like this. It can very easily improve.

      MegaBRD The Movie Nerd he is leader because he is the oldest, which makes sense. This is supposed to be before they establish themselves as crime fighters, so it makes sense for the characters not knowing who is the most capable turtle is

    12:16 okay, first: he couldn't teleport out because of the energy cage holding him. When the metal barbell drop on the cage, he teleports. It's a very simple thing to get even from your clip.

      the thing is you could very clearly see him trying to escape by teleporting out of there but it doesn’t work until his little cage thingy is destroyed so you cant say that mayhem was being dumb ya know (not sayin* you said that just further pointing out this critics bs)

    Watched the first episode...I like it alot actually..They are all goofballs yes..But they still are a bit different from eachother. Funnily enough Michelangelo is more the straight man while Leonardo is the "naturally gifted" one and kinda more laid back.And yes Raphael is the leader now and in this dynamic it kinda works actually.

    They actually explained the new designs in Splatoon 2 of all places. Nickelodeon sponsored a tournament-style splatfest. In Splatoon 2, before you pick your team, they try to convince you to pick their team. During the newscast in the game, it mentioned that they are all different species of turtles in this version.

      It wasn't that we wanted the theme to stop, it was more so that by the third round people were burned out by the splatfest due to how it's played. And, yes Donnie won

      satireknight how are they supposed to explain that in the show though? Do you want Raph to spontaneously say "Btw, I'm a snapping turtle"? Because it would be as random and stupid as I made it sound.

      Gwen InspiredGibberish You don't think that it could be explained better than that?
      Maybe he could save himself by his mouth or something. Just because you have no imagination doesn't mean others don't.

    Fun Fact, April's hand movements and Leonardo's mouth is referenced to Eddsworld and Paul Ter Voorde's design. Still cool though.
