MOST DETAILED DRIVING IMPRESSION & QUALITY AUDIT: 2022 TOYOTA COROLLA CROSS - ENGINEER'S FULL REVIEW

  • This is the most comprehensive review of the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross by an Automotive Engineer and MIT Grad, David Koichi Chao. A lot of details are being provided in terms of manufacturing quality, paint job, and body integrity in this review - also a full detailed review of the actual driving feel and impression are given.
    The Corolla Cross is the "perfect" size in terms of exterior and interior sizing - not everyone needs a big truck like 2022 Toyota Tundra!
    Automotive Press is owned and managed by David Koichi Chao, a global expert in the field of automotive evaluation, consulting, and strategy. Thank you for the detailed review. I also appreciated your thoughts on the engine power. I have seen several reviews complaining about a lack of power on the highway and I wondered if they might be blowing it a bit out of proportion. It sounds like it is perfectly adequate for most people.

    Great review. Only wish I can see is that there should be more torque at low to mid RPM for better acceleration/safer passing left of center line of slower vehicles, power seats on front passenger seat, up and down adjustable lumbar support on driver's seat, driver's seat memory and power folding mirrors at least on the XLE trim. All vehicles should come with an under hood blanket/sound insulator as added on the 2nd year (2020) of the current Rav4 generation. I will be looking at this when I need to replace my 17 year old Corolla that is still driving like new. So I just saw one at the dealership today. Not allowed to drive it due to Covid. I'm 5'10" tall and with winter boots on with a slight 1/2" sole, my head would barely touch the rear liftgate when opened. I will now look more at getting the Rav4 because I do not want to slouch everytime the liftgate is open and I will likely forget from time to time and hit my head.

    David, I get a little choked up remembering our very own, made in Canada Matrix when I see the Cross. Unlike the Matrix and the 'Matrix with a fake moustache Pontiac Vibe', this Cross has no fold-forward front passenger seat. That feature made the Matrix so handy for carrying large items like ladders or 2X4s. As an engineer, would you please explain why that amazing feature has been dropped from 99.9% of today's CUVs and hatches? As far as I know, only Daewoo built Chevy and Buick CUVs offer that feature today. Getting back to the Cross, I urge buyers to wait for the upcoming Hybrid which will save a fortune in gas. On that Hybrid, in your opinion would Toyota's 2.5 Hybrid system get the same or better mpg than the expected 2.0 while offering much more power? As the Cross weighs and costs about the same as a base Camry, wouldn't the 2.5 engine be a better option for the non-Hybrid Cross? You speculated about a possible 'GR' Corolla Cross but a Cross with a Camry powertrain would be GReat enough for me 🙂 Lastly, I can't accept the Torture Beam Rear Suspension® on the FWD model. It is very disappointing to see such blatant cost cutting on a new TNGA car.

    • @rightlanehog3151
      @rightlanehog3151 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bugsyboy5323 I drive a 2005 manual Vibe with the same feature. I always carry a small tarp inside to protect the dashboard if it is loaded with longer items. As far as I remember, the PT Cruiser was the first car with the fold-forward seat. I believe the Dodge Caliber offered it as well. My Vibe has just 195,000 km . This summer it was taken to Krown for the 17th time . It gets one coat of paste wax a year and is parked in the garage so today it looks just about as good as new. The engine and transmission have been protected with Amsoil top spec lubricants since the first service interval was reached and are also as good as new. I hope by the time it needs to be replaced, I can buy a zero emissions compact wagon with a manual transmission ;-)

      When coasting on highway, there is no issue with noise. If you step on the gas hard, it's a bit noisy but to be honest not any worse than other small cars in this class. I think it's a bit quieter than the regular Corolla.

    • @rightlanehog3151

      After 41 years of driving without a speeding ticket, I take pride in respecting speed limits. In fact, I actively advocate for lower limits to reduce C02 emissions and make driving safer for all road users. The issue with the Corolla Cross is whether a small 2.0 engine working so hard will actually burn more fuel than an under-stressed engine (like the 2.5) under the same driving conditions. To go one step further, I was disappointed that the Cross was not an all-Hybrid model like the Venza and Sienna when it made its debut. I would suggest that a Corolla Cross with the RAV4's AWD Hybrid system would be much more efficient than this 2.0, more adaptable, more reliable and more appealing.

    • @AutomotivePress
      @AutomotivePress  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It depends on how the engine was calibrated in order to produce the right amount of power and torque. Sometimes larger vehicle with a more relaxed calibration can achieve good fuel efficiency since there are so many factors contributing to the mileage (it's not just weight and engine size)
