I agree I just got this cross XSE yesterday will be getting it in two weeks I live in Canada and suv is more common and I didn’t really want to go get rav4 or crv
I love this video. Been looking at Rav4 for a month but this video was very informative and starting to think that CC is better for me. Thanks for the video! ❤
There is a person that lives on my street that has a mint condition gen1 RAV4. It may be smaller than the Carolla Cross. Funny how models grow right out of their category. Interesting review.
Thank you for your review. As a 65 year old approaching retirement, I am looking to slightly downsize from the Mazda CX5 to a Toyota Cross. The hybrid version is my choice and I’m looking forward to a test drive myself before I make my final decision. Thanks again for the informative video. eATX
Just got my 2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE last week! Soooooooo good! Rav4 to big, consider Honda. CRV to large and HRV Hybrid not offered in USA. I am so happy with my purchase. Thank you for the excellent reviews
As a big Lexus sedan owner, I never thought i'd say this: I'd buy this car in a heartbeat!! the interior really appeals to me. it's a 4-cylinder, 196 HP. & with the TOYOTA reputation for quality built engines, this car is perfect for most people. ( i'd buy that silver one in the video. )
I'm getting one of these assuming the pricing remains reasonable. I'm concerned about that though because I don't think Toyota is going to be able to keep up with the demand for this. It makes the non hybrid version absolutely obsolete. Their plan to do 30% of Corolla Cross production in the hybrid is misguided. They need to flip that and do 70% hybrid.
Thank you for this review. Had my eyes on Rav 4 hybrid for a bit now but the pricing has become ridiculous the last couple years. This offering is a good price and the size will work better for our family.
100% agree on size. The Rav4 and more or less all of its contemporaries (e.g. CR-V) have kept growing over the years, presumably to 1-up each other on all the measurements (legroom, cargo capacity, etc.). It is to the point where I will be forced to look at a smaller class for my next purchase.
Let's just I've gone from Highlander Hybrid to RAV4 Hybrid, and I'm planning on getting a Corolla Cross Hybrid next. The new Highlander seems HUGE to me now.
I am going to pick up my new XSE Friday in dark blue, moving down size from a 2018 Rogue that start to grow on me, so excited after only 6 months wait instead of a year or more that the dealer said, watch tons of U tube videos while waiting, last new car I bought was 1gen RX300, must be decades ago, start of the SUV era, turning 70 next month, this feel like a nice BD present to myself. This Corolla Cross should last a long time, might out last me, lol. You and the car care nut are the 2 best for North America folks, THANK YOU.
Thanks for pointing out those differences. I always feel that an Engineer’s perspective goes a long way!!! much appreciate the review and insights. I am looking forward to test driving the Toyo Cross Hybrid.
I’ve only been a passenger in the Rav4 on many occasions but haven’t driven it. I like the look and interior of the Rav4, however. Since I’ve gotten recently in the market for a compact Toyota SUV, I learned about the Cross and see many similarities. The lower price of the Cross is impressive as well. After looking at my share of comparison videos between the Rav4 and the Cross, I have to thank you for making yours a bit more unique in talking about the thickness of the paint and its importance, the quality despite simplicity of the interior, among other factors. I enjoyed your video, and it helped solidify my decision to choose a Cross over a Rav4. I was already leaning that way, but your video was a great help. Thanks 🙏🏽.
Can't take this car anywhere without ability to stow a spare tire. Whoever put the electrical connector in the middle of the spare tire well should be fired.
Hi Dave! I’m curious if paint thickness remains consistent regardless of colour choice? I like the exterior overall look of Corolla Cross but Toyota interiors are typically a bit of a disappointment for me. Thanks for another informative video 👍🏻
You are doing great toyota consumer choice videos. Please do (even a short) video on 2023 Corolla 'Cross' Hybrid versus 2023 Prius Hybrid Thank you very much, David 🙏
Thank u for providing very interesting info that others do not mention. I also agree w u that today's cars are becoming unnecessarily bigger every year.
David I just recently found your channel, and have thoroughly enjoyed the content. One suggestion is to measure fitment on both sides of the hood,to give the viewer a better idea of the uniformity of the gaps(like you do at the front and back of the door).
David awesome job explaining the 5 advantages of the Corolla Cross Hybrid. You have 100% opened my eyes to go & test drive this newer updated more car. Great to get your feedback from having owned numerous Rav 4 yourself. This is invaluable expert advice from an avid Rav 4 owner .

I think your assessment is correct. Boundaries have shifted a bit over the years and with new models. The Cross is a like an urban-friendly version of the RAV4. The Grand Highlander, IMO, is a true, ideal Highlander. I think the middle models are in a muddle right now: the Venza, RAV4, and regular Highlander. IMO, the Venza and Highlander distinguish themselves with higher quality interiors, with the Highlander possessing a more roomy interior and greater ride height, and the Venza best suited for frequent highway travel. For the RAV4, stylistically I think it should go in the direction of the FJ Cruiser, and be more like a junior hybrid 4Runner for suburban living and frequent camping. I think the 4Runner could take a few cues from the FJ Cruiser as well.
@@irandude1655 not true, the venza is more orientated to younger buy too. Because it a lexus. Yes more older people will buy it because they want luxury. More older people like the old venza better for getting in too. The new venza is much smaller!!
RAV4 & Corolla cross are both nice cars. Tough choice. We have RAV4 for 3 years and love it. Beautiful cruiser and surprisingly easy to drive given it’s large size. Feels like it could last years as the hybrid system seems to take all the stress out of the engine at start off speeds. Just eases off the lights and before you know it you’re at 30-40mph. No drama. It has that relaxing feeling for both driver & passenger.
Very good review. I like your comments about size. I prefer the smaller size of the CCH and better fuel economy. What makes me hesitate about buying it is the lack of a spare tire. I plan on doing a lot of camping and mountain driving. I'd hate to get a flat tire out in the boondocks with only a tire repair kit. So if I do buy the CCH I'd have to find a way to carry a spare tire.
It is very easy to buy a spare after, I can’t even remember when is the last time I had a flat, in over 50 years of driving, never I think, drive on good roads and have good tires, may be only bring a spare along on long trips will give you the peace of mind of worrying about getting a flat, so don’t stop yourself buying a really good vehicle because it doesn’t come with a spare. Thank you
I love the size and safety features. I really miss my Element when trying to find a parking place for my 2017 Sienna. Hope there is a Corolla Cross hybrid in my future soon. Thanks for the video.
Nice review. You forgot to mention 3 important points, two against and one for the CC hybrid: 1) CC h has a much smaller gas tank than the RAV4 H (40 vs 55 L), so much less range considering that their EPAs are very similar; 2) in Canada, roof rails are ONLY available on the top XSE trim; 3) one advantage in on opinion for the CC hybrid is that they put the high voltage MGR cable connector in the trunk, shielding it from the elements.
I just bought a 2023 ford escape AWD hybrid but next tear when its time for my fiancee to upgrade her vehicle we will look at the corolla cross hybrid. Im curious how it compares in size to my escape hybrid.
Interesting perspectives, Dave. Our Primary vehicle is a Highlander. Looking for a run around car in a shore town. I loved the Corolla Cross the instant I sat in it. However that no spare tire thing may be a deal breaker.
I was stuck between this and RAV4 Hybrid but went with an order for a RAV4 Woodland. I think the stiffer suspension will be nice and our roads are poor with some rural and camping access driving. I’m a little taller for the Cross’ interior. Nice review and I appreciate quality builds as well David.
Appreciate the informative video. Have had seven Subaru's and a couple Kia's in my past, just came across this vehicle, and in turn you. I've joined your channel and look forward to future videos.
Due to issues with EV infrastructure in the US, it will be a long time before Toyota’s hybrid vehicle sales will be threatened by EVs. The manufacturer is milking the hybrid technology which is not a bad thing and this Corolla Cross Hybrid is a smart move.
Could the thicker paint have anything to do with this being a pre-production unit? It seems like Toyota would not deliberately apply more (expensive) paint here than it uses on its other, more-premium models.
He needs to know the specification, the specification has a minimum of thickness, so the data that he is measuring does not mean that it wrong. We can hear a tent, so is good. This process is made with robots, high quality.
We were lucky to get a 23 Rav4 limited hybrid as someone cancelled an order. Fancier and more than we needed, but we were glad to get any hybrid. The Corolla Cross seemed nice if kinda small for us, but none were available. Wish we could have found a Prime, but those are truly unobtainium.
As for the size comparison between the two, for me what counts the most is the interior space. The Toyota website doesn't provide certain dimensions for the Corolla (for example, cargo space). Having sat in both, is the difference noticeable?
An interesting comparison but we clearly rate features very differently. I cannot accept a vehicle which features a 'repair kit' over a spare tire. The Rav4 Hybrid has room enough for a full spare and, given the amount of backwoods driving I do, this isn't a negotiable issue. Plus, I find the Rav4 to be at the low end of acceptable interior height and cargo space - the Cross, even though it is just a few inches lower and narrower, isn't as spacious or convenient per my actual usage. As always, match the vehicle to your intended use! For instance, I was disappointed by the meager towing capacity (on both the Cross and Rav4 Hybrid) which made little sense given the chassis, mount points and Toyota tow bar are rated at 5,000lbs. I ended up buying, in 2021, the Rav4 Prime SE and appreciate the power (302hp), towing capacity (2,500lbs) and fuel economy (84.5 mpg combined, which includes out-of-town excursions to a cabin up in the mountains). The fit and finish is immaculate and after two years I have experienced no issues or problems other than a safety recall earlier this year. What surprised me about the Rav4 Prime was its value as a 'hybrid on steroids'. This works in two ways. First, the Prime can harvest far more power than the Hybrid (useful on long mountain descents) and second you can charge the battery from the engine then use the extra power for passing on uphill gradients. The Prime literally charges up mountain roads! It is, quite impressive. Would I buy the Prime today? Not sure. I believe the Federal Tax rebate ($7,500) has gone because the Prime is built in Japan. Not sure what the situation is with other PHEV's but this would seem to be a major disincentive to consider a Rav4 Prime. As for the handling, well there's not much I can do about the electric steering, but the suspension and tires on the Prime could be rethought. It is clear that in adding extra batteries, Toyota had to 'crank up' the suspension to accommodate the under-chassis batteries, without sacrificing clearance. Unfortunately the Prime really needs a suspension re-tune, but having driven a 2024 model year Rav4 Prime XSE it appears this is 'needs more work'. The Cross felt better on the road but that's just a subjective impression.
The hybrid tow capacity is low due to the extra strain it puts on the electric motor which powers the ECVT, that's the reason for this as I understand.
It's interesting that the paint is thicker since another reviewer said that Mazda was responsible for the paint process in the Alabama plant. With all the complaints about Mazda's beautiful Soul Red Crystal being too thin, perhaps they've corrected their technique to spray the paint a little thicker for better durability?
Just stumbled on your channel. Great review. We have set our sight on a RAV4 and are now going to test drive the Cross because of this video. Thanks. BTW. Subscribed!
Another very informative video. Thank you for going to the time to break out some of the details in the comparison with the RAV4 would like to Get ur opinion on the Honda HR-v and make a case which one is better Keep up the good work 😊
Hi Dave. You have sold me just by the paint thickness discussion and the 3.0 safety feature. You should get paid well by Toyota. This will be my next vehicle. Thank you Dave.
I've been shopping for a Rav4, and hadn't even considered a CorollaCross. But you've convinced me to take a look. How is the engine noise at freeway speeds? Better than the Rav4 and Corolla hybrids?
I would assume this is a press car since the hybrid is not out yet. As someone who also is an automotive engineer the press cars are messaged to the nth degree for things like panel gaps, paint, interior fit and finish, etc. We have even gone so far as to remove seems and had vehicles completely repainted. Those vehicles are gone over with a fine tooth comb and should never be taken as representative of true production cars especially for things like paint and panel gaps. Your other points are completely valid.
For a little bit more, RAV4 have a better cost / performance. It was missed to mention that the trunk capacity of the Corolla cross is way smaller than the RAV4
What you planning to put in there? Majority of ppl I see with SUV are mostly empty. Not even bottle waters for emergency, a screwdriver, extra clothing, baseball cap. If you transport stuff like me why need a bigger vehicle.
My only complaint is the gas tank size. Same size as the Prius which parts it was take off of but they should have a spare tire as a cross over. What’s the drag coefficient compared to the rav4? The Prius is 0.27 which is very good.
How does the AWD compare to the Subaru Crosstrek? The Corolla Cross has a different set-up, I believe (?) I'm in the US (NE) and drive in the snow, so AWD in the Corolla is a concern of mine.
Is it possible that since this car is newer they are still ironing out how to be efficient with the paint? With that said does it make sense to check another model in 6 months
We had already decided that the CC Hybrid looked good to us and is #1 on our purchase list, but where we live Corolla Crosses are rare at our one Toyota dealership and the hybrid is non-existent. I've been watching their inventory and they can't get ANY hybrids in right now. We're socking our money in short-term cds in hopes that this situation changes in a couple of years.
Hi, one day about a year and a half ago, l saw the toyota Cross, and l like it. I didn't go for it because the back seat space wasn't much. But with the hybrid trim that improved. Last June, the Corola Cross hybrid was introduced, but l hava not see it in the dealer even do for you comment l'm going to wait for one.
Really like the Prime versions offered by Toyota. But all seems a bit overpriced or not available. But Corolla cross hybrid seems to be a convincing option with quality, usability, and quantity not being an issue.
Nice review but it did not include even a quick overview of the exterior and interiors. I’ve heard the cargo area of the CC is much smaller than the RAV4. It would be nice is someone could give a national (U.S.) overview of Toyota model availability. Here in S. Fla. they have zero cars on the lots.
I don't care for the info screen sticking up above the dash. It makes it difficult to clean the dash. I think the screens on all these new cars are a distraction while driving. 🤔🤨🤨
i bought the non-hybrid Cross for my daughter as her first vehicle to use as she is going off to college in a small-to-medium sized town. I plan to purchase the hybrid model for myself since i live in a bigger city.
Nice video. Not a generic view like most others. i wonder if the new Forester will be as good. This would be my next car on the used market unless the Forester is better. We need more subcompact small wagons and SUVS.
How do you like the RAV4 prime? Do you think it’s worth the extra money? I assume you will have to keep a long long time to recoup the extra cost to purchase and how long will the batteries last? What level charger do you use with your prime? Thanks for your videos.
I don’t think so. It’s just as loud as plasticky as the cheapest LE model that’s about 20k less. You would think for the money, they would give it a little bit of a special treatment(maybe add some more premium parts and more sound insulation) but they don’t!
I heard you say that the RAV4 hybrid did not come with standard all-wheel drive. Maybe that's different in Canada. But in the US all hybrid RAV4s are all wheel drive. It seems like the Highlander and the sienna hybrid have front wheel drive options. And it looks like the Corolla cross hybrid is all-wheel drive all the time as well.
I understand what you say but my understanding is that this one is a pre- production model.... Isn't the same quality pre -prod vs massive production right?
I want to buy a new car and have 2 choices which I can't decide. Ford focus active x station wagon hybrid vs Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. What do you suggest? Overall which is better?
Wow. I review that actually uses some science and measurement for comparison. Who would have thought. Very much appreciate the review. We've been looking at the Rav 4 and did not even consider the Corolla Cross Hybrid which I think is due for consideration. Thank you.
I wonder if the reason why the panel gaps are tighter and thicker paint than RAV4 could be due to changes in Toyota quality. As you mentioned, the RAV4 is older than the Corolla Cross. Or because the Corolla Cross is built on a Mazda Toyota plant, you get some influence from Mazda given Mazda builds products that compete with premium and luxury vehicles as well. Sadly the main drawback for me considering a Corolla Cross is the back seat leg room and the tablet-style infotainment that sat on top of the dash.
Thank you for the excellent analysis. A bit off topic... Do you have any contacts at Toyota? Could you please tell them to pay more attention to the front overhang? It looks excessive, disproportional to the rest of the car (just look at any front 3/4 shot in the video). Toyota has the engineering know-how to solve that; they used those techniques in the iQ.
We bought both a Rav4 and a Corolla Cross. I do agree that the Rav4 is bigger than it needs to be. Too much air included to make it larger. Oddly enough I get better mileage on the Rav4 than on the Corolla. When I drive the Corolla, I'll get about 42 mpg and 43 on the Rav4. Not sure why. Also, closing doors hard on the Corolla gives a tinny sound while the Rav4 sounds more solid. So far, we like both of them.
David, I am concerned about road and wind noise with the new Cross Hybrid. Some reviews have indicated it is noisier inside underway than the RAV4 which is not particularly quiet..can you or others please comment on this..
Good review. My wife and I own a RAV4 hybrid limited . We like it because the seat height is just right for getting in and out. ( we are of an age ) Does the Cross have a similar seat height off the ground ? Thanks
I have one issue with this model -- NO SPARE TIRe! Although I have used my spare on my Matrix clone about 2 times in my 15 years of ownership, I still want a spare 😝
This is the 2nd car review I have seen from you. Excellent, to the point and interesting review! Subscribed. Think this car is perfect for many. Probably highly reliable, economic, practical and looks (imho) very good too. We have a much bigger car, but it 90% of the time it is driven by wife to commute to work. To accommodate the kids, we would need a Highlander or RX.
Excellent review. Thank you. I am considering replacing my wife's CRV with this vehicle. I would appreciate it if you could tell me which model was reviewed here...S or SE or XSE. Thanks.
Currently own 2016 Rav4 & will keep as trouble free auto. For second auto Cross would fit our needs. Wait time for Hybrid Cross ? Think regular Cross underpowered. Thanks for excellent review. Time frame to decide late fall 2024 so would like to see what in store for in new Rav4 & availiblty of Cross Hybrid. 👍😎🇨🇦
I was on vacation in Maui last month and had a Mercedez Benz GLA as a rental car for a week. I can honestly say the build quality on my neighbor's Corolla Cross gas engine is Far superior to my MB GLA rental from Sixty. The interior noise in the MB GLA is laughable and worse than our 1997 4Runner Limited.
David, no one can touch your reviews, not close. Your knowledge an in-depth evaluation is second to none.

100% i would easily convert to a Tesla, but charging infrastructure is not to my liking in the US right now.
Very useful to receive your perspective on the Corolla Cross Hybrid.
The 23 limited hybrid is the exact same as the 22 limited hybrid except for one small change to the infotainment system
As for the size comparison between the two, for me what counts the most is the interior space. The Toyota website doesn't provide certain dimensions for the Corolla (for example, cargo space). Having sat in both, is the difference noticeable?
What I understand it's very noticeable in the back seat.
Do some paint colors require more layers like black vs white?
No one sprays paint onto new cars. They’re dipped into paint baths.
Just stumbled on your channel. Great review. We have set our sight on a RAV4 and are now going to test drive the Cross because of this video. Thanks. BTW. Subscribed!
Another very informative video. Thank you for going to the time to break out some of the details in the comparison with the RAV4 would like to Get ur opinion on the Honda
HR-v and make a case which one is better
Keep up the good work 😊
yeah, this is more like the og rav4, which i love back in the days. But we got the rav4 coz now I got a growing family. Great review. Thanks.
Hi Dave. You have sold me just by the paint thickness discussion and the 3.0 safety feature. You should get paid well by Toyota. This will be my next vehicle. Thank you Dave.
Great review. Any numbers on cabin quietness compared to similar vehicles?
I forgot the channel, but they were saying it’s quieter. There is more sound deadening materials.
Thanks alot, your reviews are very inciteful.
This is a big reason why I'm sticking with buying a RAV4 Hybrid.
What you planning to put in there? Majority of ppl I see with SUV are mostly empty. Not even bottle waters for emergency, a screwdriver, extra clothing, baseball cap. If you transport stuff like me why need a bigger vehicle.
Not everyone has the same lifestyle. Different people have different needs.
I’m thinking that it also lacks a spare tire.
My only complaint is the gas tank size. Same size as the Prius which parts it was take off of but they should have a spare tire as a cross over. What’s the drag coefficient compared to the rav4? The Prius is 0.27 which is very good.
Same weight as a Prius too. This vehicle has more in common with a Corolla and Prius than a rav4 in my opinion.
How does the AWD compare to the Subaru Crosstrek? The Corolla Cross has a different set-up, I believe (?) I'm in the US (NE) and drive in the snow, so AWD in the Corolla is a concern of mine.
In the past, Toyota indicated that it has 1500 lbs towing capacity…is that tru? Can you purchase a hitch for a bike rack?
@AutomotivePress: Why does Canada get the heated steering wheel and not the United States?
It's cold here!! 🥶
HV cable corrosion is no longer an issue with the 2022 and 2023 RAV4H?
It’s available now for custom order with delivery in 5 months.
Excellent comprehensive review. I’ve using Toyota for years and Looking forward to trying this car!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice video. Not a generic view like most others. i wonder if the new Forester will be as good. This would be my next car on the used market unless the Forester is better. We need more subcompact small wagons and SUVS.
Great review, you've actually convinced me to seriously consider the Corolla Cross Hybrid as opposed to the RAV4...coming to you from NZ
You would think for the money, they would give it a little
bit of a special treatment(maybe add some more premium parts and more sound insulation) but they don’t!
Its definitely faster........almost supra fast
I heard you say that the RAV4 hybrid did not come with standard all-wheel drive. Maybe that's different in Canada. But in the US all hybrid RAV4s are all wheel drive. It seems like the Highlander and the sienna hybrid have front wheel drive options. And it looks like the Corolla cross hybrid is all-wheel drive all the time as well.
He simply misspoke with all the excitement. Here in Canada all RAV4 Hybrids are AWD. 😁
I guess in Canada. In the US all RAV4 hybrids have AWD.
does it get a lot of wind/road noise? thanks.
Thanks let us know where is make , just wondering.. cuz I got 2021 Corolla hybrid , make in Japan ..
I understand what you say but my understanding is that this one is a pre- production model.... Isn't the same quality pre -prod vs massive production right?
There will be slight improvements with final production model, perhaps 1 to 2% improvement
I want to buy a new car and have 2 choices which I can't decide. Ford focus active x station wagon hybrid vs Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. What do you suggest? Overall which is better?
Great video. Thank you for sharing your points of view.
It's tablet style, but it's pretty small so it doesn't obstruct too much, IMO.
Dave, it was very informative. Thank you.
Have you visited the Alabama plant? I've always believed that it is best to avoid buying a vehicle from a brand new plant
If no plug-in this year, what's the mileage?
Nice work...not any fluff...just helpful information..thanks
One correction: the Rav4 hybrid comes as AWD only (in North America), just like the Corolla Cross hybrid.
Good review. My wife and I own a RAV4 hybrid limited . We like it because the seat height is just right for getting in and out. ( we are of an age ) Does the Cross have a similar seat height off the ground ? Thanks
Go to your dealer and have a look.
@What the Good luck finding one at a dealer.
@@peterward1698yep they had 2 but sold I got in a waiting list paid 500 50 day wait the way used cars are it’s better to just buy new Toyota cross
I have one issue with this model -- NO SPARE TIRe! Although I have used my spare on my Matrix clone about 2 times in my 15 years of ownership, I still want a spare 😝
I’ve never used my spare tire in the last 15 years. As soon as I buy a hybrid with no spare I’m sure I’ll get a flat!
Does it take a full size spare like the RAv 4. Essential information
Excellent review. Thank you. I am considering replacing my wife's CRV with this vehicle. I would appreciate it if you could tell me which model was reviewed here...S or SE or XSE. Thanks.
It was an XSE. Only SE and XSE here in Canada.
@@peterward1698 Thank you. I looked a bit and they are tough to find here in the states...regardless of the model.
we just ordered one last week, sydney Australia. no brainer! this is much better value than a rav4 by more than 15k here!
Standard Hybrid AWD? Is that for Canadian market only or for U.S market also?
Standard in both countries
@@AutomotivePress ohh wow! Thank you for the information! Nice that it’s standard here in U.S 😁
Wow! Been thingking in the past which is which, now you helped my mind. Thanks Sir. 😊
Hi! Thanks for the review, I'm waiting for the Corolla pickup or stout may I say
