  • Dominions 6 is the latest game in a venerable series of fantastic fantasy strategy games from Illwinter Games Design. Without a doubt one of the most complex and potentially intimidating video games ever made, it is also incredibly playable and fun, and in this single player series, I hope to show how the game can be played in a thematic way that plays to the lore of the game.
    This series will be suitable as a tutorial to the game for new players as I look at the game rules and mechanics quite thoroughly. However, I'd probably advise not playing Feminie as a new player as the Late Age is rather punishing and requires some knowledge of the mechanics to really do well. That said, you can play ANY age and nation as a beginner if you set the difficulty a little easier, and remember to put AI nations on Defensive so that they don't declare war on you too early!
    This game is released on January 17th, 2024 and will available on Steam.

    I just did some math and here is the list of your most upkeep efficient researchers:
    1. Cloistered Lady 1,85 RP per gold a turn
    2. Savant 1,625 RP per gold a turn
    3. Abbess 1,565 RP per gold a turn
    4. Unseen One 1,5 RP per gold a turn
    5. Loremistress 1,167 RP per gold a turn
    6. Sage-Queen 1,045 RP per gold a turn
    7. Sorceress 0,81 RP per gold a turn
    The Unseen One is a surprise. Them being sacred actually puts them ahead of the Loremistress.

      Factoring in the +2 from Magic 2 it actually changes a bit:
      1. Cloistered Lady 2,77 RP per gold a turn
      2. Abbess 2,086 RP per gold a turn
      3. Unseen One 1,92 RP per gold a turn
      4. Savant 1,875 RP per gold a turn
      5. Loremistress 1,277 RP per gold a turn
      6. Sage-Queen 1,155 RP per gold a turn
      7. Sorceress 0,9 RP per gold a turn
      Both the Abbess and the Unseen One are now more upkeep effective than the Savant. Though the difference isn't that high.
      So yeah, the Unseen One is actually a pretty good researcher. She is also glamoured, so the enemy can't see her. And she is decent in a fight. Might be worth getting more of those in the capital.

      Excellent work. As you've noticed, these numbers all change depending on the Magic Scales but I'm also surprised that the Unseen One is a good researcher. I'm very wary of just building efficient researchers, I've lost MP games doing that when I get attacked and I've got only crappy mages to defend with.
      But this is really interesting, thank you!

      @@merrydiscusser6793 Number of divine researchers is limited though, so Abbesses have a slight efficiency edge there: If you want to maximise your research per turn in each province, the cloistered ones can quickly become dead weight you're paying for. They are however slower to recruit. At (if my memory serves) 3 vs 6 base research, that adds up to 18 difference in research per province at 6 candles, and 30 at 10. Both of which quickly add up. I don't know if they can research in provinces without temples, but that might make the cloistered ones more valuable again (as in risking them as researchers in potentially less protected provinces).
      I don't have too much experience in the game, and none in MP, but I thought I'd point that out in case it sparks any additional interesting output from you. :)

      @@diazinth
      Yeah of course there is a limited number of divine researchers. You also have other things you can consider. The Sage-Queen and the Unseen One for example are capital only. You could not look at the upkeep, but how much each researcher needs to be payed up front. Or how the research per recruitment point ratio is. Or who to best recruit with limited funds.
      A lot of those considerations are turn by turn based. So I choose to use the one metric that isn't: How much you pay for each research point over the course of the game in upkeep a turn for that researcher.
      There are also considerations beyond the research. Like you wanting battle mages. Or a certain path access for specific rituals or items. So yeah, just hiring mages based on the best upkeep to research ratio is definitely not a good course of action.

    A year ago I picked CoE5 because I saw you play a weird little game, and it looked like great fun.
    Looks like it's gonna happen again!

    I'm disappointed that Feminie doesn't have composite bows since Sauromatia had those in the Early Age.

    • @battlemode
      @battlemode  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Interesting, could be an oversight, or perhaps Feminie aren't actually descended from Sauromatia. I kinda assumed they were but there's nothing about that in the lore.

      I'd second this. Shortbows just don't do... much of anything in LA. I think Feminie is really going to struggle with killing things. At least until communions come online in a significant way.

    Liking the playthrough and explanation so far! I have played a little of Dominions 4+5 but only Multiplayer, as some friends got me to join games, but I had no idea what I was doing. It kind of put me off playing single player.

    • @battlemode
      @battlemode  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah yeah, I think Dominions is very different in single player as multiplayer. Single player generally has a lot less pressure, and you don't have to basically have a PhD in Dominions to be able to win a game :D

    4:16 Come to think of, if your own national troops aren't that great, some generic recruitment might be a pretty good idea actually.
    5:43 Everyone, just sing along. XD
    7:15 A Sorceress will cost you 21 per turn
    9:04 Yeah, I always put my PD on 10 for that very reason.
    9:27 Have you checked the manual if preaching now provides temple checks? It didn't in Dom5.
    12:05 Any reason you go for the Sorceresses instead of the other mages? For the Veil Army?
    24:17 Nope, there is one left. Right in the middle of the screen. About to get killed by your knights. And he's dead.
    32:31 Funny, itsmu had a Jomon game were he also only had an ethereal bless for said dragons. XD

      re: Sorceresses, the AI likes to run at you fast when it does attack you, and so I'm wanting a good mage core to be able to fight a rush off with. I almost lost a game as Muspelheim to Ulm when they did that, and it was only my heat scales that saved me. The researchers won't be so much use if that happens.

      Hahaha, that's fair.
      Though there is definitely a balance to be made. A lot of good mages need some research to actually be efficient.
      Some of the efficient research mages are also pretty good combat mages.
      It's just that the Sorceress is your worst RP efficient researcher per upkeep. Even getting Sage-Queens is better, and they are pretty powerful mages as well and cost less upkeep. The Loremistress is also a pretty good mage. Only one path less than the Sorceress and again, less upkeep.

    I don't know if it is just because of the intro nature that you are doing this, but usually you'd want to put multiple next research at once rather than just one at a time a turn, especially on fast research and/or with good research values. Since if you have 20 rp to go and are doing 40 rp the "extra" 20 rp is potentially inefficiently allocated (it goes into Conj which may or may not be what you want). Usually I try to have a good 5-6 next items on the list (you can always change it if you change your mind or situations change), but don't like "wasting" rp into Conj if that isn't the plan.

    • @imperialus1
      @imperialus1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah this is important. Becomes less so as the game goes on but you don't want to lose those RP, especially in the early game. I usually like to have a plan to prioritize getting 2-3 schools up to level 3. That said though, with a glamour focused nation I'd probably be bumbling around, doing the same thing to try and see what spells are effective with the new path.
      Honestly my default whenever I am stuck is to default to Conj 3. Baby Elementals are pretty much universally useful.

    • @battlemode
      @battlemode  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There's a reason I don't do this. I hadn't really picked a solid plan for research in this game, it's less important than it is in MP and with all the path changes I want to pick as I go. Letting the game warn me each turn is a good reminder for me to start thinking about it. I wouldn't do this in MP of course, if you don't have a plan in MP you're gonna lose
