- hmm..
The story is based on the protagonist Stanley that works in an office building. One of Stanley's tasks is to monitor data coming on a computer screen but one day that screen goes blank. Stanley, unsure what to do, starts to explore the building and finds it devoid of people.
OH, DID U GET THE BROOM CLOSET ENDING? THEB ROOM CLOSET ENDING WAS MY FAVRITE!1 XD
Jan Sten Adámek I find this very concerning.
I feel like something is missing... the video ends with you saying 'Alright, lets do this.'
from the beginning of the video to about 10 minutes in the narrator of the story is describing my existence so accurately that i literally had to leave my computer for a while.
Mind control workplace?
"Stanley, *would you kindly* have these reports ready by this afternoon?"
Well at least he didn't ask him to kill anyone
The Stanley Parable is more than just a little trippy, it literally breaks the fourth wall! (I'm wondering what the other three walls are). So happy you're playing this game
Hello human from the past!
The unique thing here is not that the Stanley Parable breaks the fourth wall - but that the fourth wall doesn't exist in the Stanley Parable. Your actions as a player are the same as the actions of Stanley, so you are essentially the same person.
THE ONLY WINNING MOVE IS NOT TO PLAY!
Such a mindfuck, but yep, that's the exact message this game is trying to get across. There are other nuances, but that's the gist of it.
You played stanley parable, YEY!!!! my favorit youtuber played my favorit game, am I dead?
i have the chills. the thing leading to freedom, is by following the narrator, without making any choice yourself.
I love watching new people play The Stanley Parable and you always make me giggle Dodger and I can't wait to see more.... cause you're awesome... in case you didn't know.
thanks for playing this i really needed some good videos tonight
Love your work Dodger and this game is brilliant, my favorite ending is jumping onto the catwalk from the cargo lift you were on.
Wow this was so great! I've been this played but I loved your commentary :P you might try some other endings sometime :P
Don't you see Dodger? Sitting in front of a computer pressing whatever buttons the screen tells you to without any thought of your own. You Are Stanley!
I like the fact that at the end he is told he is liberated, that he now had his own choice and he only accomplished this by taking orders.
I played the Source SDK mod back when it came out and I've got to say, it's really interesting listening to someone else's reaction to it.
Btw for anyone here, there are 20 endings.
And the broom closet ending is my favorite! But the baby one suuuuuccccckkkkkssss
The broom closet ending is my faaaaavoooooorrrriiitttteeeee ending :D
Those graphics are incredible. Looks about 1 step from looking real
And so Dooger continued to play the game, always searching for new endings, new answers to mysteries she had still yet pent up in her mind ignorant to the fact that the message had come up telling her that the game had been beaten, she had won and yet still she played on.
Hours flew by as she played this game looking for answers, the voice continued to tell her where to go and what to do, sometimes she followed the voice and some times she ignored it completely...
Press
perhaps his goal was not to understand but to let go... HOLY HELL THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL
I could see this being an experiment. Not like, the story of the game, but the game is an experiment on the player
Crazy how much this has changed since its original GMod version
What's amazing about this game is that every playthrough I've watched has found a different ending. And I've watched a lot of playthoughs.
I really like the fact she does long videos.
I also love how the developers managed to discipline you. The first time you were told to do something you decided to just hang about and click on everything to see what you could do, just like any other game. Then when you found out nothing did anything, you just followed directions. Then - when you were finally given a choice - you ignored it. The game punished you for that, and when you restarted you did as you were told, and you suddenly trusted the narrator.
Beautiful.
I saw it more broadly as a parable to a "normal" life, living the same routines over and over for decades; the job, the wakeups, the foods... You see many things that are wrong in the world, but avoid trying to understand it too well. Instead of facing reality, you imagine other worlds, better ones where you're happy, and there's no misery or injustice. Yet, rather than actively trying to change yours, you just keep pushing the same buttons and keep imagining.
The narrator is just the best.... that voice!
It's great that you have started doing more lets plays.
This might sound stupid but this game really changed my life.
I find it hilarious that the ending where Stanley finally frees himself from being controlled by someone else is the one where he follows everything the narrator says.
Why do I want this game so much? MY HEAD HURTS! WHAT THE HELL!
If you want it get it this game is really good.
If you haven't gotten it yet, steam has it on sale today.
It's an awesome game, I know.
Man, it's been 3 years. Look how far you've come!
You're genius...
"Stanley forgot that today was a Public Holiday, and had turned up to work for no reason."
At the very end, I was honestly expecting a "Press K to be happy" prompt
More ! I played the game and it is as much fun to play it as watching other people's reactions while discovering it !
as a completionist, your decision to not walk to your own messy death disturbed me
Just when your "wife" opens the door and the narrowater laughs: That's the best laugh ever!
It tells us that broom closets are suspicious and people prefer to choose things on the right first.
Love this game. The narrator is hilarious especially with the baby test and the broom closet.
Honestly I think the narrator is perfect as it is :)
LOL i just saw this game with TB and i was like Dodger and Jesse should totally do a lets play of this, and here it is. You guys are mindreaders!
By following all the directions from a voice in your head, basically controlling you, you break free from the mind control... yeah... not... Nice one Galactic Cafe!
This game is so fun! I managed to find all but a couple of the endings without a walkthrough & saved "beating the game" for after I exhausted everything I could think of doing. I think she'd really enjoy the baby game ending tbh
honestly the best part about the game is how mad the narrator gets if you don't do what he says
I feel like the baby game one isn't worth the four hours, but to each their own.
This is an intensely interesting game. I really love the way it plays with the meta aspects of gaming. I may have to check this out for myself.
Dodger, unluckly you got the worst ending on your first play. There are sooooo many possibilities. MOAR
He did a WTF is on it. He still says it's not a game, but he loves it anyway
apparently there's a fine line between how many times you can go against the directions.
Yup, although as soon as you step through the big door you (the player) no longer have control of Stanley. I thought that was a nice touch.
It's actually a well known psychological effect. Whenever something is unique or different to those around it, we're naturally drawn to it. The Broom Closet is the first door that has letters and a title given to it. Also, it stands out in a game like this since is such a mundane thing, no one puts those into games b/c, who cares. So it goes against our experience so we at the very least click on the door b/c "why not?"
i've played this game for 8hrs lol and it never ends
Hell to extend, everything you know about stanley is something the narrator has told you, he told you that his name was stanley or that you are stanley, so arguably straight off the bat we all started following the narrator because we assumed what he initially said about who we are was true.
This feels very much like it could be the other side of the coin to Molle Industria's Every day the same dream, very interesting !
Some people (I just watched TB's video about "what's in a game" :p) might argue The Stanley Parable is not really a game but it really looks like something to enjoy.
We're all scared of the outside and long for the safety of the broom closet.
What's interesting is that she took the first two routes the same as Spoon, I thought she would've done something different.
You missed the broom closet ending! THAT WAS MY FAVORITE ENDING!
Gosh, this is creepy. I bought this game yesterday and started playing it right away and now i'm watching this video.
On my first try i ended up with the exact same ending that dodger has, went through it again and this time i follow the narrator, with ofc going through the broom closet, aaaand once again i made the same choices Dodger made. Anyone else?
PS: Discovered at least 10 endings just today, this game is sooooo awesome, keep it on dodger!
broom closet = exploration in most video games with collectibles, refusing the first order where another choice is to be had that is obvious = rebellion, A lot of options are intrigue, Mind Control bull is empowering mixed with a shadow of doubt, these guys are honestly excellent in what they've made
I was just waiting for a tiger to jump out of nowhere and pounce on Stanley.
That we can't resist taking a look inside things which we aren't told we cannot look into. When we are told not to look into it, we either rebel or obey. When told we can, we open it. But when left unmentioned our curiosity is overwhelming.
Burritos are unbelievably amazing
When I opened this up I imagined it would be based on Stanley from the american Office
This is very Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy...
I, absolutely, love this game
Fair enough, as long as you leave the feather dusters, those are mine.
Please tell me episode 2 is coming
damn, you missed on the broom closet ending. One of the best.
I love the way you ended this video :o
Dodger makes the Cutest noises when she's frustrated... ^w^
The mouse-square thing is a glitch. It's painting outside the edge of the cursor graphic, so there's a big area of white around the cursor, or maybe the alpha channel is all jacked up.
the only way to win is not to play.
I would love to watch more of this. Are there any more videos of this game from dodger ? If so where can i find them please ?
Great vid and an amazing little joueney.
This is the first video I have ever watched of dodger playing a game... And it feels weord to hear her voice but to not see her face.
"And it turned out that Stanley had indeed missed a memo; for Stanley was no mere employee but a test subject for a mind control device. Test subject number four two seven, to be exact. And it was today, after years of testing that the device was found to be fully operational and before Stanley could attend the launch celebration a final command was tested: Forget.
And so it was that Stanley found his way to the party, entirely unaware of the momentous occasion that his arrival foretold."
Based on the game's story (?) I think it's "The end is never the end" and that it hints to all the different endings you could get.
I feel like he just went to work on the weekend.
Welcome to the beautiful mindfuck that is The Stanley Parable.
Note you can unplug the phone from the wall for what is probably the closest to a 'real' finish to the game (aka the 'Choice' ending).
Oh Dodger. You´ve barely scracthed the surface of this game
You sir, are brilliant.
Go to the mind control facility again, but this time instead of going on the elevator up, go all the way back to the first button in the room that turned on the lights and press it again. IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO THIS DODGER, STANLEY DEPENDS ON YOU!
Hahahaha, I love how Dodger played *exactly* like me the first trip through, ending up with the "fake wife" and even waiting for minutes during the "Please press 'E' to be at work in the morning". Wonder how many did exactly the same thing?
Did Dodger ever finish this? I would have loved to hear her thoughts and reactions on the other endings.
i can only think about one phrase:
Would you kindly?
Thewarpedzobe brought me here haha rembember last year when you did that video
play more of this, its so entertaining seeing your reactions
"... ever so slowly from the darkness--" Ibelieveinathingcalledlove "-- just appear..."
more of this series please
You should also mention that each and every one of them is drastically different and an incredibly awesome commentary on the state of mainstream gaming today. Anyone that considers themselves a real gamer (not you, CoD baby) will love this game.
the broom closet ending is my favourite XD
Saving chunks. Building Terrain. Simulating the world for a bit...
it was also called "the stanley paramable", and was a HL2 mod
Dodger, you should've turned the mind control back on! That would've been more fun to watch you picked the two depressing endings. Keep trying there's tons of possibilities.
We hate being told what to do.
GREAT VIDEO, love it!
I'm avoiding all news and videos on this game because I've been told it's better to be surprised.
more. MOAR!. I need to know MOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
And I'm totally buying this during the steam christmas sale (unless they have one sooner... like thanksgiving or something?)
you only finnish the stanly parable wjen you get all of the achivements
I feel like some people might do both said choices because they wanna explore as much as they can. People unfamiliar with the game might say 'I wanna see what's the other way first', or try finding secrets when the Narrator says there's nothing, because he says there's nothing.
That's what I think anyhow
i love to think that someone went through the game just following the narrator every step of the game and when he completes the game he's like "well this sucks" not realizing that the game is about choice, surely there must have been some people that have done that lol
