  • In this video orthopaedic surgeon and physiotherapy experts answer important questions on what is an ankle sprain and tell you to spot if your ankle sprain is serious, whether you should wear an ankle brace? and When should you go to hospital?
More than one million people a year visit the emergency room with a severe ankle sprain. Millions more will sprain their ankle but never seek help and in the long term this can lead to re-injury and even arthritis. In this series of videos, Mr Andrew Goldberg, an orthopaedic foot and ankle specialist from London, offers an expert explanation about ankle sprains joined by Matt Todman, of SixPhysio in London.
A sprain is an injury to the ligaments that stabilise the ankle. Ligaments are like an elastic band so they normally stretch a little then return to their normal shape. If they stretch more than they are allowed then they can tear which is known as a sprain. Initially a few fibres tear (a grade 1 injury). Then a few more fibres tear (a grade 2 injury) and finally the two ends snap apart (a grade 3 injury). A grade 3 injury is the most severe. He discussed ankle fractures as well as other injuries that could have been missed like tendon injuries or cartilage damage.
    Topics Include:
00.25. What happens when you roll your ankle?
00:46. The types and grades of ankle sprain
01:05. When should you go to hospital for an ankle sprain?
01:33. Could my ankle be broken?
01:49. What other damage could I have done?

    IMPORTANT:
If you have rolled your ankle and it is a severe injury (such as being very swollen, the skin is breached, or you are unable to weight bear) you must seek expert advice urgently depending on which country you are in. In the USA call 911, or in the UK call NHS 111.
