    CUSTOMISING LASTS
Lasts come in thousands of different shapes and sizes and some may fit you better than others (just like the shoes you try on in the shops).
In the video below we'll show you how you can build up your lasts for a custom fit. This video is perfect for anyone with wide feet, bunions or a high instep etc.
Remember that everyone has a different preference for how their shoes fit them so customising the lasts can be a process. You'll need to make a pair of shoes on the lasts before you will know exactly how the shoes fit and feel.
If you rarely have fit issues there is a good chance that most lasts in your size will fit you well, so we'd recommend skipping any customisation until you have made your first pair of shoes on the lasts.
ALTERING THE TOE SHAPE OF YOUR LASTS
In the video below we'll show you how you can alter the toe shape of your lasts. You can do this with veg-tan leather following the same methods shown in the video above but we prefer to use 'Milliput' for this as you can achieve a much crisper shape :)
Bear in mind that the more you build-up/elongate etc the toe shape of your lasts you risk making your lasts too long/big for you. If you want to create a dramatic pointed toe shape you are best to drop down a size before building this up or you can source lasts that already have the toe shape you'd like.
If you are wanting to dive a little deeper into the world of home shoemaking, my online Footwear Masterclass is one of the most popular shoemaking courses in the world!! 🌍 (Casual brag! lol)

I've been interested in making my own shoes because I have wide feet and it's difficult to find the styles I want. So this video was super helpful.

This is why so many people have trouble firing boots and shoes even after taking proper measurement. You noted a difference in foot volume by taking circumference. Then guessed by building up compared to a 2 dimensional tracing. Then checked volume again. Even if the circumference is the same there is no guarantee it's the same 3 dimensional shape. True leather will stretch, and if your foot were applying equal force in all direction that would work, but it's not. For people with a large profile around the ball but normal to narrow instead and heel this leads to bunions, hallux rigidus, and Morton's neuromas.

Does this make finding insoles/outer soles/shoe components etc harder?

Sorry for the delayed reply! It can do but you can also make your insoles and soles from scratch using texon board (for the insole) and resin soling (for the soles)

Only yesterday I was shopping for mock alligator leather; when I found the perfectly moulded hide from Italy, a barrage of Chinese companies tried to push a 30x30cm square of it for £20, when the quality hide was £41 for 6sq (still expensive, but the nicest embossing I could find on the internet for less than Double the cost for the same size). I did consider purchasing a genuine alligator pelt at around £160-£200 from Thailand, but I had a feeling it would be seized by customs as an illegal import.
