Congratulations, and thank you for posting this summary. It's very useful, actually, not just for those of us who've cheered you on along the way but also for all the student pilots looking ahead to their checkride. And welcome to the club of people who didn't have a flawless checkride -- it's about 99.9% of us!

Congratulations, well done! I recall my own PPL checkride in April '77, and after feeling pretty confident early on, I was assured I had failed when the FAA examiner asked me if I could perform a 2 turn spin to the left! I was confused by the question, as I knew spin training was not part of the curriculum for the PPL. When I answered that I was aware of spins and the recovery sequence, but had never performed one, he simply smiled, then proceeded to demonstrate one while I followed through on the controls. He then had me perform one! During the debrief, he stated although spin training is not required for the PPL, pilots need to experience the sensations and attitudes of the airplane during a spin and recovery (pull out) so as not to become terrified and possibly freeze in the event of one. I couldn't have agreed more, as he shook my hand and told me I had passed!

Congrats! Thanks for posting your summary, it was really interesting comparing my experience with how your checkride went. I also thought I was going to fail because of my engine failure maneuver. I chose a REALLY bad field to land in. I had to dodge a tower, and there was a house... but thankfully he had me go around and I dont think he noticed. The perk of a low wing I guess?

It was very helpful and I very much appreciate it! I started learning to fly 30 years ago and got to about 20+ hours before my logbook was completely waterlogged and destroyed. I also gained a bunch of weight and figured I'd never fly again. I have since lost 100 lbs and started training again. Your path seems very similar to mine... I want to get my instrument rating, commercial "license" and become a CFI. I obtained my 2nd class medical (to make sure I could eventually become a commercial pilot) and I am about 10 hours into my training. My CFI says I am getting close to be able to solo.
I think I am progressing pretty well, but I have had some doubts: I have felt like it's going to take a very long time to get to the point where I would be confident in passing a check ride. Your video has inspired me and made me realize that examiner is not looking for perfection. They are just making sure I will be a safe pilot. That really takes a load off my mind, so thank you. By the way, I am "almost" past 50 too (just 9 months to go). :)

I can totally relate to the difficulty in the steep learning curve needed to accumulate the knowledge required to pass the tests on the way to obtaining a private pilot certificate. I started at 60 and have struggled and found that the material is far harder to reacll that when I was younger. I have paused the flight training at 26 hrs, to concentrate on my written test, but also I have realized that I need to be more patient to let it all sink in. Congrats and thank you for this video.

Come to the most densely packed airspace here in Southern CA. HA HA. It's a zoo out there. Learning how to get a radio call in edge wise to So cal for clearance into the Charlie is an art. Fun landing on a parallel runway with a jet. Caution Wake turbulence. Fun waiting for 15 min. for ground to give you your taxi clearance to run-up. Then go line up with 7 other aircraft while we wait for 6 aircraft to land. The engine is running and the Hobbs is spinning $$$$.

The Scenery on MS flight simulator and Xplane 11 is not so great. It's missing landmarks. It looks nothing what it should look like. Green grass looks like water. The massive blimp hanger is not there. No Pink hotel. No Main street parking with the tree I use to line up. The only thing that is correct is the taxi and runway and the position of the control tower. Guess it's good for IFR. and learning to work the radio. I fly a Piper and it does have a Piper PA-140
