Flying Past 50
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 ก.ค. 2022
When I was 57, I decided I wanted to learn to fly. I created this channel to share my experiences as someone later in life going through the flight training process and beyond.
Flying the Pattern with Dad
It was time to get up and do some laps in the pattern to clean up my landings. My Dad tagged along to comment on the quality (good and bad) of my landings.

Rebuilding Confidence and Proficiency
มุมมอง 3124 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had gone several months without flying solo over the 2023/2024 winter. I'd lost confidence in myself and had a bad case of the flying "jitters". This flight was my attempt at coming back to flying.
I Passed My Private Pilot Checkride!

I passed my Private Pilot Checkride! Something a little different from me this time around. Just me sitting and talking to the camera, rambling on about how I prepared for my checkride, some thoughts about the test itself, and what comes next. Here's the link to Just Plane Silly's video on the 313 Method for memorizing airspace clearance requirements. th-cam.com/video/B_4Z8XBtMkE/w-d-xo.html CH...

Dialing In Short Field Landings
มุมมอง 375ปีที่แล้ว
At 46 hours of experience, I'm working to clean up some of the rough spots in my flying. I spent an evening in the pattern, just working on my short field landings. The requirement for a Private Pilot Certificate is land no further than 200 feet after a designated landing point. I chose the fat, wide "thousand foot markers" 1000 feet down the runway. They are 150 feet long, meaning I need to la...
My 2nd Solo Cross Country Flight!

Nice weather, Canadian smoke, and some minor rookie mistakes made for a fun and educational 2nd cross country for me.
Failed Mission Still Equals Successful Flight
มุมมอง 720ปีที่แล้ว
I had a "mission" to do my first solo flight to an un-towered airport, but I didn't make it. Here's why, and how I process that "failure"

Power Off Landing at KRME
มุมมอง 230ปีที่แล้ว
After not flying for a while, our first landing was power-off in a stiff crosswind. I made a lot of mistakes, but it was a good experience.
Awesome Sir just awesome love it.
So happy you did the flight. Never stop you came a long way.
awesome video love the information
Congratulations, and yeah, I wouldn’t think for that one thing would keep you from getting your PPL. Very nice. I just turned 52 and I’m 30 hours in. 73 landings, and I finished all my night stuff. I have flown in Bravo airspace Charlie airspace and Delta airspace at least 10 times. It’s been good. I feel that I’m ready to solo, but my CFI went to the airlines and now my new CFI has to start requalifying me. So after my check ride, this CFI switch is one interesting story that I’ll have for my video :-) By the way, I made a jingle for hypoxia, and I made a jingle for the different types of Fogs. Memory aid, can’t get them out of my head. haha. Maybe I should make one for a tomato flames! Congratulations again and blue skies!
Listening to you was nice. God bless you sir
I felt the same way as you after I had not flown for a while, one thing I do is touch and full stop taxi backs in the pattern. After a few and once I feel more confident then I do 1 or 2 simulate engine out and if still feel good then I will pick a place and go but first I will review my flows and emergency procedures and then go. I don’t to feel just confident but able to handle an emergency if one does happens.
Especially after that last one, I'd say you are free from any rust! Well done.
I need to work on not drifting left so much on take off, but yes... I feel much better after this session! Thank you!
6:10 rough but.. if that's your worst ever, I'm jealous. 10:00 curious what "that little racing plane" is. 13:05 I like this panned view. final landing, :chefskiss:
"That little racing plane" was an RV that had come into the pattern with us and landed. I think when my Dad said that, the RV was holding short waiting for us to land.
Great camera angles! No country crock on that last landing….100% grass fed Kerrygold there! Thanks for the ride 🙏
awesome
Great camera angle on the landing gear. Thanks for posting, even the rough landing. I bet it helps to see what the wheels are doing, not just what you're feeling in the seat.
It does. It helps me realize how much I tend to go to the left on takeoffs and landings.
I like setting "goals" for your flying. And review to catch errors is kind of amazing- and devastating at the same time. But you're a capable pilot, and you know how to use your judgement. Good job. And thanks for posting this. 4:20 "take a look". like it. 5:49 glad you stumbled over that name. I'd actually said it out loud to my partner, it's always funny how we don't recognize regional names from elsewhere. 6:30 I like that "correction". you're ready to bail if you need to, but may as well correct and see if you can get stable. and a decent landing. 13:15 no, it wasn't a poor landing. it was fine.
I always appreciate your comments, @flysport_tedder. Thank you!
Your flying looks just fine. Nice airplane. Firm landings are preferred. (I didn’t say hard.). Floating is undesirable. FLY IN TRIM, if you’re not. My students always wanted to ‘feel’ the airplane. BS. Now, if I could just get that pesky medical back…..
why not bring a CFI along to help get the rust off?
I’d been up with a CFI a couple of times before this flight to do just that and it helped. This flight was about restoring some self confidence to do things on my own.
Love it! The commentary and in-plane vid combo is great. "I'll take it" is what I say too, on just about every landing 🛬😀
Great video, I can say that I'm in the same position you were in when you filmed this. I'm glad to know you shared similar feelings of apprehension that I do now. Thanks for sharing
I think you'll find that this sense of "The Jitters" is pretty common among newer pilots; at least, that's what I hear from others. You should check out my friends over at "The MidLife Pilot Podcast." Episode 61 is all about gaining confidence as a new pilot. They also have a great Discord community where you can freely ask about anything aviation-related in a friendly place.
Chris, this is awesome. Congratulations. Seriously. Congratulations. I am so happy for you. Recognizing the challenge, not falling into complacency, taking a smart, but calculated although scary step and cautiously pushing yourself. I hope you felt like a million bucks after this flight. Thank you for sharing.
I really appreciate the openness you have in this video. I've had jitters and in every case, the worry far exceeded the reality. That said, I think it's wise to be aware of those jitters in the event that they're telling you to be aware of something. But I would also suggest getting input from other pilots with more experience - especially if they're a CFI - to help you learn which nerves are real concerns and which ones are all in your head. I'm glad you gained some confidence despite also identifying some areas you want to improve! Can't wait to get to fly with you in person.
Excellent advice. Fear of winds has been my Achilles heel. After this flight, I went up with CFI on a gusting-20's day and spent an hour in the pattern doing crosswind landings. It -really- helped me realize that even though I may not choose to fly on a gusting 20 day, if I got caught in those winds, I could still land safely. That was a massive boost to my confidence.
Great video! I love how you thought through everything. Well done.
It was very helpful and I very much appreciate it! I started learning to fly 30 years ago and got to about 20+ hours before my logbook was completely waterlogged and destroyed. I also gained a bunch of weight and figured I'd never fly again. I have since lost 100 lbs and started training again. Your path seems very similar to mine... I want to get my instrument rating, commercial "license" and become a CFI. I obtained my 2nd class medical (to make sure I could eventually become a commercial pilot) and I am about 10 hours into my training. My CFI says I am getting close to be able to solo. I think I am progressing pretty well, but I have had some doubts: I have felt like it's going to take a very long time to get to the point where I would be confident in passing a check ride. Your video has inspired me and made me realize that examiner is not looking for perfection. They are just making sure I will be a safe pilot. That really takes a load off my mind, so thank you. By the way, I am "almost" past 50 too (just 9 months to go). :)
Excellent! Great to hear you are getting back into flying. You should check out The Mid-Life Pilot Podcast. They are a great group of guys who have created a really active and friendly community on Discord, which you can access at various levels by contributing to Patreon. The lowest level is $1/month. I subscribe to the 5$ level and it's worth every penny. Check out their website at midlifepilotpodcast.com.
Very useful and encouraging. I'm the same age as you and just 8 hours into my flight training so a similar situation. No ATP or career plans I just want to accomplish a life long goal and integrate flying into the next phase of my life.
what mistake did you make?
Thanks for making this video, I'm 38. I plan to start around next May from Jamaica queens. What part of NY are you from?
Good luck! I'm up in central NY around Syracuse, which is nice, quiet airspace.
@@FlyingPast50 ah I see that's a good distance away lol, thanks
Congrats! Amazing video 😎
Very nice telling of your experience, thoughts and reactions from the checkride. Thanks for explaining how you prepared. Hope you have many hours enjoying safe flying in the future.
Congrats!!
Congratulations! Thank you for taking the time to share your journey. I really enjoyed watching the times you had go no go situations. Seeing your thought process was great, I think it take courage to share those moments. Hope you continue to take us along!
Thank you. I haven't had much time to edit new videos, but I have some in mind.
Fantastic video. Appreciate you!
Congratulations, nice work!
Congratulations!! This was very helpful. I'm planning on taking off the week before as well to study for all the oral stuff and do some flying.
Congratulations! I’m not that age yet I’ve been having some struggles in life trying to get more frequent training but videos like this give me a lot of motivation, big up !
I would have had a more challenging time doing flight training when I was younger. There were too many things competing for time and finances back then. I wish I had done it when I was younger just so I would have been able to spend more of my life in the sky. Keep it up, man. It's worth the struggle.
My private pilot check ride is this upcoming Friday!!
Good luck!
I just passed mine Thursday. Congrats for passing!
Right back at you!
Excellent. I'm trying to get ready for my first solo. I'm 74 so have you beat in age! Al in Tampa, FL

@@FlyingPast50 thank you! I passed. Informative video, very helpful.
Just passed my sport pilot check ride today
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Awesome. Congrats!
@@FlyingPast50 thank you!
@@FlyingPast50 congrats to you as well!
Never explained how the 91.205 almost backfired on you.
That's true. Sorry about that. Essentially, he asked me a question about an ELT being needed. I said "Yes. It's on the list of required equipment in 91.205" He dug deeper and and stressed "would you EVER be able to fly without an ELT". Essentially, he was looking for 91.207 which I was not familiar with.
@@FlyingPast50so can you fly without an ELT?
Congrats. Have my check ride in Rochester the 20th
Good luck!
Congrats! 👏 I just started learning to fly at 45. Good to know that it is possible to learn flying at this age :)
Worth every minute and penny!
I can totally relate to the difficulty in the steep learning curve needed to accumulate the knowledge required to pass the tests on the way to obtaining a private pilot certificate. I started at 60 and have struggled and found that the material is far harder to reacll that when I was younger. I have paused the flight training at 26 hrs, to concentrate on my written test, but also I have realized that I need to be more patient to let it all sink in. Congrats and thank you for this video.
Good luck. Our older brains make it a more significant challenge, but it is worth the effort.
Thanks for the video!!! Congratulations I'm 26 hrs in my training and this helps tremendously on what to expect. Stay safe!
Best of luck!
Congrats 👏!. I found this video very helpful and informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Good job
Congrats
"Three Cheers and a Tiger!" (on passing your check ride).
I just passed mine the other week in KPBG right near you! Congrats!
Is PBG another closed AF Base like Griffiss? (I seem to recall there being on there as a kid). That's a flight I'll have to try sometime.
Congratulations! I still working on mine!
Good luck!
