  • Footage of me at my first check ride attempt. I passed the oral exam with no issues. But I screwed the pooch on the flight portion...Baaad. I almost became known as the Delta Deviator.

    You'll get this! BTW, my jaw did drop when you said you hadn't flown your checkride airplane. Your CFI should have guided you against doing that. For the 6 weeks preceding my checkride, I chose the plane I was going to checkride in and only booked it from then on.

      LoL Dan, He actually set this up! I wanted to fly N190ME (My normal airplane). Now full disclosure, both aircraft are C172SP's with G1000. Both are about the same vintage (2004 I think). The huge difference is that Jeff Wallach closely guards 190ME as his airplane and keeps it out of the hands of renters and students that are not his. To that end, it is not nearly as beat up as some of the other aircraft at Monarch. In fact, in a short time, it will be going in for a new engine. Jeff is a Chief Instructor, soooooo he can throw a little weight around.

      Nah... I disagree 1K %. YOUR check ride IS YOUR CHECK-RIDE! Period. When YOU ARE PAYING WITH YOUR MONEY - No one with a title (except DPE or FAA) should ever, EVER, shit you like that. I don’t care if he the Chief Pilot - that’s BS ! Chief pilots are a dime a dozen ! Here today, gone tmrw.... I’m pissed off for you and I don’t even know you except from you video. That’s just wrong dude. Your CFI should have stepped in and resolved this for you. So 🤬 on him too. So many student pilots are screwed (behind the scenes) with this kind of behavior. Some penny pinch us, like charging a .5 hr. for “preprep” instruction time to a . 75 for “debrief” time when all’s they do is blah,blah,blah until there next student arrives. Sorry this went down this way. Don’t kick yourself - EVERYTHING worked against you this time. Start fresh and earlier in the day. It will make you a better pilot! Learn from this and keep spreading the word to other students.... Scott

    I know this is a really old post but I have to respond.
    Back in the 80's, I had an almost Identical experience on my check ride. We had spent all morning on the oral and by the time we were ready for the flying, the wind was similar to what you described. The Examiner offered to let me do the flight the following day, but like you I had a case of " get there idis". After we were air born and on a down wind departure I couldn't hold altitude or heading within limits. Fortunately the Examiners took pity on me and offered one more time to postpone the flight. I didn't hesitate and accepted.
    A few days later I passed the flight part and realized it would have been near impossible for any pilot to have kept the plane within acceptable limits in those conditions.

    Hey I want to thank you SO much for posting this video. It was one of a gazillion I watched before my Checkride and it really stuck out to me because it gave me peace that if I had a bad day and failed I’d be able to get back on the horse and complete the journey just like you did. You’re the kind of pilot who will keep getting better and better over the years because you’re honest with others and more importantly yourself. I’m proud to say that I passed my exam and am now living the dream. Just took my family out to Stevenville from Denton for some Hard 8 BBQ. Always a classic cross country for DFW folks. Anyway, thanks again and I hope to run into you at some point at one of the area meetups. Blue skies!

    To everyone watching this. Getting dumped on an airspace, or being behind happens! There is NO rush. Just say "ok, I'm a little behind the airplane, I'm going to do a left/right 360 here to get setup". Also thank you for sharing this, it helps others learn

      That is great advice! I don't know how that would work on a check ride. I guess it would depend on the DPE.

      @@WolfPilot it would be fine on a checkride. Would he rather you bust airspace? Now, if you are doing 360s for 10 minutes...well yeah

      ​@@WolfPilot No DPE would fault you for that, especially not on Private Pilot. You are expected to be the pilot in command, and if you say you're not ready, you're not ready. That wouldn't be a failure or even a debrief item.
      On that point, you are the pilot in command even on your checkride when you're just acting. All the DPE is doing is observing, and giving you instructions like you're his chauffeur. It's up to you to decide to travel the speed limit and obey all traffic lights and decide if a lane change is safe to start at the time the passenger asks you to start it.

    I blew my first attempt as well, one bad day is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Keep pushing forward, if it was easy-everyone would do it. Focus on the way your going to feel when you pass; you’re trying to do something rare and special.

    Man, I know that heartbreak all too well. Even on an ideal day, you’re fatigued from a 2 hour oral, and your heart is pounding with the examiner sitting across from you. But don’t let this phase you brother. Adversity and failure will always make us better pilots as long as we don’t quit. Keep pressing on, looking forward to seeing your wings post. Hang in there.

    It takes a lot of guts to post a video like this; I commend you for making this so that others may learn.
    FWIW: when I get behind the airplane and close to controlled airspace, I will execute a 360° turn to give myself some time to get organized, make radio calls, etc. If you do this on a check ride be sure to tell the examiner you recognize the situation and the turn is your corrective action to remedy the situation - the DPE will like that.

    I did turns around a point in super gusty winds. It's hard and I was grunting. I kept my wing on that point. My turns where Text book. I then did steep turns and looked at my site picture and instrument scan and found grunting helped me keep my altitude as I had to pull up to keep it. Grunting helped. Forget getting the perfect trim. You just feel the plane. I am a student pilot that is almost ready for checkride. Need a few more hours.

    I know the heart break. I failed my first stage check in college. The words “Turn it around” ripped my heart out, because I was so excited and overly confident.
    Sometimes you just have to laugh at yourself. Getting a phone number on a checkride, is just one of those times. Haha

    I am getting close to my check ride so thanks for posting this! Even on the ground Ive had some crazy ground issues at my busy Class D (dual runways, helicopters, medical planes priority , jets lining up in front & behind, being number 9 for takeoff, etc..) always hoping doesn’t happen on checkride....

      My first checkride was a HUGE learning event. Who was your DPE? Are you a student at a KADS school?

    Makes sense. When I'm overheated I don't think as well either. I'll make sure I do my checkride on a cool day.
    Freezing can be the same on a motorcycle. If you are freezing and riding you are paying more attention to being cold than you are riding.

    9/6/79, at Addison, after my oral and a planned cross-country, we got in the Cessna152, N24890 was one of my two I rented. Wouldn’t start. Had to go get the battery cart, but the cowling didn’t have the plug. Very windy out, but got the cowling off and set behind the left main gear. Got charged and cranked. Warming it up a bit. Then, the strong, quartering tailwind blew the cowling up and over the gear, and right into the prop. Yeah! Thanks to plane number 2, I did get a good checkride and got my license.

    No sweat man! (pun intended). I failed my first PPL checkride back in the day for stupid reasons. It happens. It's actually a good lesson that you will constantly face throughout all your flying...and that is when to decide that today is not a good day to fly. Your f'ups were simply a ripple effect from that one link on the chain. Lesson learned. Move forward.

    Obviously, this is ancient history now. When the examiner said, "Do you want to discontinue" it was probably the examiner trying to give you a hint. I've noticed examiners can sometimes give subtle hints that are in your best interest when flying. I've obviously seen your flying videos since, and you're a competent pilot. I would fly with you any time.

    Like others have said, I appreciate the honest assessment. It would have been far easier to keep quiet or minimize the experience. As someone who is starting to prepare for my check ride your video is helpful and gives me things to stay mindful of, especially pushing my minimums in an attempt to try to squeak by.

      Always remember this-- You can always discontinue after the oral portion if the weather doesn't match with your minimums or even if you are fatigued. It won't cost you more money to the DPE to fly another day.

    Not many people get a PPD on their checkride. Glad you didn't bust their airspace, or that conversation with the FSDO would have been a lot more uncomfortable. Also glad you passed the second time around.

      I had an *AWESOME* DPE that got me to turn away at the last minute. The second check ride was much better.. It was fun! Even landing in the rain!

    Thank you for sharing this! I practiced my last soft field/short field landings/takeoffs at KOFP (VA, elv ‘207) with a 12 knot xwind gusting 18 for 1.6 in our traffic pattern…was that out of my personal mins YES would I have done that on my check ride NO but you better believe after that practice I grease those landings on a clear day like they are nothing haha! Sometimes a crazy day helps you…but unfortunately not on a checkride :( I am redoing my checkride this week because everything was good except my LEFT steepturn I busted my altitude and failed to use any rudder on the turn. Here’s to you man!

    Wow; I just wish you the best. I'm getting ready to schedule my check ride and the 172 I've been flying is down for a fuel gauge issue (part on order). I hesitate to move forward in a different plane.

    Hey! Comm multi rated here....pretty sure we went to the same flight school, I’m open to any questions ya might have 🤙. Don’t worry bro about a bad flight...it happens, and as an edit being PIC and calling off a flight can sometimes be the biggest call of the flight...takeoffs are optional, landings are mandatory. Never be afraid to make the best choice in your head

    There is a bust and there is a bust. I was predicting dehydration before you even mentioned it, behind the plane, not a good spot for a checkride. Good on checkride for keeping you out of Delta, if they wanted they could have probably just let you fly through it, it's your checkride after all? I was in another profession, I'd just say, listen, I need a minute to get sorted here, and then pick a quiet direction / slow speed etc whatever and sort things out.

    I’m a bit confused, did you enter the Delta without two-way radio communication? Or did they give you a PPD just for not contacting them 10 miles away? I don’t think they can give you a pilot deviation if you didn’t break their airspace rules or disobey their commands.

      I didn't actually enter the Delta. My DPE was watching the MFD and we got within .5 miles of it without calling the tower and they don't like that. They didn't actually deviate me.. Remember, it's always a "possible" pilot deviation.

      If they tried to give you an actual deviation though, I would have fought that all day lol.

    Takes a lot of guts to admit this!! But props to you, I also failed my check ride as a stupidly line up on the wrong runway 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ stupid stupid. And you feel as everything went to crap. But a lot of us run into this.

    How much money have you spent for training thus far? How much did it cost to get a re-test for another check ride?

      By the time I got my PPL, it was 17k. The check ride was 700$ but I had to cough up another 300 to redo the flight portion.

      @@WolfPilot Another kicker was when I saw how much it would cost to rent a Cessna 172 for a weekend for an IN STATE trip. ~ $900.00 for the weekend. And thats only AFTER spending the 18K like you did just to get a VFR rating. Not trying to downplay your major accomplishment. I just cant justify the expenses involved to become an aviator.

      @@nal2us2 Return on investment? Unless you are planning to go ATP, all you are doing is adding a life skill.. Flight training was actually far cheaper than collage and my end goal is to be a flight instructor, so maybe I will see a fiscal return at that point. For now I just revel in the fact that I have skills that only 1% of the country has..

    If I started overheating and getting dizzy, I would tell the DPE, I just failed my IMSAFE checklist. I am overheated, and getting dizzy And would not even start the aircraft.

    Flying a strange Airplane for the Checkride is a setup for failure. The weather was also not ideal. A good CFI ensures these things work in your favor. My CFI did everything he could to ensure I was comfortable on the day of my checkride as he should. I passed on the first try.
    Sorry you were not bolstered the correct way. Hope you have obtained your certificate by now.

I think my instructors rationale was that all the planes in the school fleet are 172SP's with G1000. It not like I trained in a piper then check rode in a cessna. It was still just different enought

    People think it's a joke when I tell them waiting in sequence for departure for up to 30 minutes at KADS is not unusual. Btw I'm pretty sure you didn't commit any deviation, you don't have to contact the tower at a specified distance, it's only recommended - the only way that would be a deviation is if you went into their airspace without establishing comms.
    Edit: after listening to the ATC, it seems you did bust their airspace. It sucks but as long as you learn from it, I think you'll be fine.

      Actually no I didn't. That voice you heard after me was my DPE Chris. He was watching the G1000 and had me turn away 1/2 statute mile before entering the KTKI Delta. ATC was just pissed because they didn't know I was coming. In my training, I *ALWAYS* would call them around 10 miles out and let them know what I wanted to do..

I personally really enjoy the controllers at KTKI, but I've heard from others that if you do something a little out of the ordinary they really get after you. That, and I've also heard it on freq a couple of times lol were you able to end up retesting?

    i just took a continuance on the flight portion of my commercial certificate because of high winds. the practical is hard enough with gusting winds. also, i can't even imagine flying a plane i've never been in before for a checkride. sounds like you stacked the deck against yourself.

      There have been many comments like this one. I didn't get to choose my airplane. N190ME was in for 100hr I think. Regardless, I hope somebody in this situation knows they have options.

    Damn some people have confidence! Flying an airplane you've never flown before in 25 knot gusts... I'm not sure how that checkride was supposed to go, were you going to do precision short-field landings with approach speed of 55 knots with crosswind gusting to 24 knots?..
    My own checkride failure was pretty spectacular, but I have to admit this story is something else.

      It was a form of gethereitis. I wanted to get it done. Part of this folly was my own personality as a git-er-done kinda guy. It was a good life lesson to have that failure. I now have those minimums defined on paper. At the time I thought it was a good idea.

      @@WolfPilot well in all honesty unless you plan on flying professionally and need a clean checkride record - there is no difference between a discontinuance and a failure. You have to come back and finish the ACS items anyway, so probably makes sense to take the risk and try to get done as much as possible.

    There is no reason to be that close before calling on the radio. Start 20 miles away. Fly along the edge of the airspace but don’t fly 120 knots directly into the airspace without contact. When in doubt, slow down.
    There is no such thing as being “into the wind” when doing power on stalls. If your nose is all over the place when you’re approaching a stall, you’re walking on the rudder. Steady pressure.
    Lastly, it doesn’t matter if you haven’t flown the airplane before. The trim forces required for a soft field takeoff are very light if you start in the green band. It’s a dynamic maneuver, trim as you go.

      The reason why I didn't call in was that I was already behind the aircraft. Also 20miles away is too far.. I doubt many towers would even be able to hear you.. 10miles out is the golden number for me.

    I have a personal minimum not to fly above 90 degrees F. I will be up front with my DPE letting him know i have to have a lunch break and It can not be above 90 degrees. F. Maybe do the oral one day and the flight in the morning next day.

    HAHA I don't know what's worst, your DPE watching you get reprimanded by the control tower, or my Automobile Driving Test Examiner and I getting runned off the road by a Road Raged Filled Tractor Trailer Driver for accidentally cutting him off! I think the overwhelming sensation on both are probably just about the same as both are very high risk situations! The worst part is that we're doing this right in front of the examiner! HAHAA

      I wasn't really "reprimanded" as much as just called out. But the sinking feeling was exactly the same. Thank god I had a cool DPE that understood what goes through a students head during check ride.

    Most channels that post communications with phone numbers usually bleep or leave out the numbers. I would suggest that you also do that. Don't want to publicize tower phone numbers.

    Ever practice on anything but long paved runways? Simulated practice/experience will only get you *pretend experience. Practice at short unpaved strips and you'll get the hang.

    Just did my checkride 18 gusting 30kt. Winds aloft about 60kt at 2500 foot. I actually think it's better to go in the weather. Sounds like you were nervous, that's an honest reality. All a learning experience. Cheer s
