Got my great grandfather's footlocker from WW2. My dad and I went through it found his swagger stick. Plus found a grenade with a circle welded to the bottom to make it sort of like a desk ornament. But the thing about the grenade us that it still has the pin and everything in it. Would it be a test or dummy grenade?

Should be called 'stolen dignity,' not 'stolen valor.' Valor is something that can't be taken away. But these young punks sure can make your life miserable having to explain yourself constantly back in the world!!

I think it's the pridefulness that kind of sets some people off and want to mess with Veterans. If you want to talk about your service, it's best to make it a story and give some sort of moral or example of what to or what not to do at the end of the story.

I’m in the Air Force currently, I agree wholeheartedly that it’s peculiar for someone to elect to wear a uniform out while shopping, especially a uniform that the Air Force has never worn. He’s wearing the old ACU that the army used to wear, which is odd, on top of that, as you well know I’m sure, you don’t wear your ribbons with some very rare exceptions. Also interesting that he chose to fake the rank of captain, usually these sorts of people go for much higher ranks than that.

I had an uncle that was absolutely 100% USMC and deployed to Vietnam. He was forever an alcoholic and suffered from mental illness/PTSD. 100% of the time I saw him he was wearing a white t shirt with his cigarettes rolled into the sleeves and wearing his dog tags. He was at a bar one time talking sit about his time in Vietnam and some guys called him out as a non GI stolen valor. They end up beating him a bit, dragging him out, taking his tags. Screaming stolen valor at him. He tells that story so broken hearted. The one brotherhood he still believed in, betrayed him, in the name of some stolen valor macho bullsit.
People need to be careful with this stolen valor trend. Sure, there's a lot of bad actors out there. But there's a lot of mental illness, addiction, etc. Even if they never were military, their mental illness is often their reality. Count yourself lucky not to suffer from mental illness.

I did close to 12 years in the ARMY during the last decade of the cold war. A week after my ETS I was detained by the local police and got arrested for walking while intoxicated.I had only taken two beers. They pushed me around quite often and even invited me to fight under a bridge while they where taking me arrested to the police station. I was released the next morning, under time served in jail. After that experience I never carried anything in my wallet that could identify me as a veteran...

I’ve been a police officer for 22 years. I’ve had to deal with a LOT of bums. I’ve met exactly one who was actually a veteran. He was an MP in the 80’s, peacetime. My favorite fakers were the guy who claimed he was a Vietnam Vet. But was always too drunk to remember I had already arrested him several times and knew he was born in 1965. And only knew enough about the military to say he was in the 1st Cav. When I’d ask which troop and squadron he was in.....huh? And the guy who said, “I was infantry! 11 Bravo.” Great. What unit were you in? Huh? You know, while you were busy being an 11 Bravo which unit were you in? Uh.......13 Bravo. That’s a cannon crew member bro. Which I remember since I was actually in an artillery unit......

You are spot on regarding VA benefits! Yes it takes a long time, many hoops to go through no doubt about that but wow, it was so worth it!! My father had sustained combat injuries in Korea. Mortar shell exploded near him and he had embedded shrapnel in the neck area that could not be removed because it was near the spine.
I navigated the va gauntlet for him. It took two years but va back dated the disability compensation ($4500/mo) from the time of the initial request for benefits. He qualified and received a transport van ($42k) and a state of the art wheelchair ($22k), and he got the best healtcare that I have ever seen!
To all combat injured veterans out there in TH-cam land, all I can say is don't give up! Once they make the determination your whole world will change! Thank God for VA!!

Mediacly discharged again due to feet. I failed to serve my country and always will thank every service member I meet, because they are doing at what I failed to do. How absolutely disrespectful are these frauds! Is "stolen valor" a crime? If not, it most definitely s/b. It's bad enough so many vets don't get the help and attention they need upon returning home. I'm an Air Force veteran, I was a flyer and the stuff on his left arm is from a flight suit. Why he has Air Force tapes on an Army uniform is beyond me, but the 2 small patches on the left shoulder are what we call "pen tab patches" on the old flight suits, which I think have all been phased out to the new 2 piece ones, but the Top Gun style zipper suits, there is a pen pocket on the left sleeve with a little flap that velcros down. Most guy would take a knife and cut that flap off because it looked shitty and bunched up. Most units let you were a personalized patch on the velcro where that patch would rest, so they were small rectangular patches. Common things were sports teams, schools, states, etc. things like that. The other patch on his left shoulder goes on the front of the flight suit opposite the name tape. That is the command patch. So you'd have unit on one shoulder, command patch on the front, name tape on the front, and then American flag on the other shoulder (although the flag went in and out of style while I was in).
