For people who don't know if you have a Samsung 20 note ultra and and newer your phone has the ability to Wi-Fi share..
This can come in handy because as of right now the portal does not have a web browser which means if you're at a hotel or airport and need to sign in for authentication it can't do that. The circumvent that issue at least with Samsung phones I don't know about any other phones if you have a Samsung 20 ultra or newer The phone can share the Wi-Fi that you're using with other devices..

      Great review. Keeping it real.
I knew what I was getting into when I bought this device. I knew what it was and wasn't. That being said, I'm blown away at how good it actually is. Just last night, my wife had a rehearsal followed by a Christmas party (which is why I was there). I was sat through the rehearsal playing on my portal tethered to my cell phone. It was AMAZING! I ran an entire deployment of MW Zombies (although it got hairy at one point due to one 2 freeze). I also played a few less demanding games and it was amazing considering I was streaming this from my console all the way back home. I do have my PS5 hard-wired.

As someone who's been using and understands remote play for 10+ years, mostly on my phone for the past 4+ years, this thing is god's gift to me. It's not "perfect", some kinks to work out with the streaming, but that SCREEN... WOW. And it's just so comfortable to hold.

Especially now since the steam deck can no longer use the official PlayStation app to remote play since the recent update in the last 2 months.
I have a 12-in tablet and love remote playing on it but it's very inconvenient especially when traveling and as far as the backbone I bought it and also have a jailbroken PSP, I DON'T LIKE PLAYING CONSOLE GAMES ON SMALL SCREENS LOL

I'm playing through the PS play remote Play app not the official PlayStation remote Play. It's 1,000 times better than the official remote play app..
On the portal it doesn't show you what it's using to connect It's just that little circle..

I get it but for serious gamers they won’t get the full quality of Remote play with a portal. 1200 to 1440p would’ve been a better fit for the screen resolution being were playing Ps5, not a ps4. They could’ve at least gave a oled 1080p screen, again this is Ps5. If you guys in the PlayStation community start settling for less than believe me Sony will continue to give us just that. With Portal you have to take TWO devices. iPhone 15 PM screen bests Portal display. iPhone plays AAA games on the go like RE 4, Village, + more coming. Portal needs a PS5. Your review is exactly why people have a problem with this handheld. Yeah okay, I can see the use cases for it, but with the inconsistent Internet speeds and latency you are getting, that to me is a red flag. Not to mention the fact that it's also not a dedicated handheld like a Vita or PSP, which by the way I knew since day one. Just wish other people understood that. And before people say 'oh if you want to have a strong Internet connection while you are out, just hotspot it to your phone', okay but at the same time you had better have an unlimited data plan on your phone considering you will be chewing up your data in no time, considering it's a streaming device. Sony, PLEASE give us another iteration of a Vita or PSP. Massive props to you man, for doing this video.

Dude.. are you too young to remember? The vita failed. The hardware sucked. Development sucked. We were always waiting for games to come out and if we ever did get anything it would be so watered down it wouldn’t even be fun.
Why if they put resources behind vita and it failed, would they choose to put money into another failed product? Remember expensive memory cards too? Having to buy separate games? Al that? Like it wasn’t roses and sunshine

Sony has no control over what WiFi router you buy, where you place it, or how you configure your WiFi network. When properly optimized, the Portal is amazing. I get only 36 ms latency with mine. No delay, stutter, or connectivity issues. Precisely because I got a decent WiFi 6 router and manually configured it so that there's no overlapping signals or interference.
Game developers do not want to develop games for a PlayStation handheld. That would be a heavy burden on development to optimize a game for it. It's much better that we have game developers focus on the PS5, and we leverage that hardware with our Portal.

@@mmstick I have decent to good performance with my portal. Love my new little handheld, but the stuttering does get a bit annoying. And it always happens during a damn boss fight lol maybe a sign to upgrade my WiFi. I got a router I’ve had with Xfinity for years

@@Ghost-jy9hk agreed, i think doing a streaming handheld, that utilizes a console, that is a hit is a good idea. It scratches the itch for handheld play for Sony consumers and gamers, with a Sony product, but Sony does not have to worry about throwing alot money or resources at it, which for the most of their secondary products they've proven to not be very good at supporting long-term.

Awesome video bro, you want better performance with the PlayStation Portal, make sure you PS5 is wired connection, and verify it that is it on the portal or console it self then your performance will be solid. And much better and make sure your portal is on the latest software. Also it’s a market game think about it, the portal has tons of features on it but PlayStation turns them off and will unlock them with software update same thing they did with the PS5 when it came out when you couldn’t update the SSD on it, now you can, so PlayStation wanted to see how it would do in the market and so far it’s still sold out eventually more features will be added. All part of the market, but happy holidays god bless.

My Nintendo switch does but I still love it for what it does and it has come in handy very much when family visits and they have to sleep in the living room or I usually sleep so I can play my PlayStation Library when I have to sleep on the floor in my mom's room and the performance at least for me has been Flawless besides the Pulse Elite that disconnect everyone's a blue moon. Hey Terry, great review brother. This video has great production value, I really like you were walking around your house, outside, and you have a beautiful family. You articulate your thoughts in a clear concise way that makes it chill to listen to. Also, you pretty much covered all my gripes with this device and oh boy.
In a vacuum, the playstation portal is not a bad device. But all of the cons you brought up highlight why it's not a great device. For example, I am not currently in the Playstation ecosystem. I have PS4 I never use anymore. The reason is strictly because of Sony's outdated accessibly...
Sony Exclusives, while maybe great for the developer, is horrible for gamers. Too many games are stuck in their ecosystem for 6 months to 2+ years... Why? What makes it worst, their cloud gaming service that includes streaming to PC... Does not include new titles like FF16 or Spiderman 2. At most they offer 1 hr trials lol.
I already own an extremely good PC and gaming laptop... The Nintendo Switch (which I own too) is a portable device so it's giving me a different experience... Gamers are also moving away from consoles in general. There are PC handhelds and Steam Deck. If Sony actually weren't so risk adverse and created a NEW Playstation portable, you've said it yourself, you'd pay $1000 for that experience. So would I! So would so many people. But instead they are mailing it in, and this device illustrates what matters to them most. Staying the course of mediocrity. Sticking to their console model and exclusivity. This does not include me or many other gamers.
With PS Portal, we get a product that mirrors your ps5. Which cannot beat the experience of a 12 year old device (Wii U), cannot run cloud gaming (PS Plus), does not offer bluetooth ($50 tablets offer bluetooth), and on top of that has prioprietary wireless earphones that cost almost as much as the device...
This device in a vacuum isn't bad like you said. But Sony's reluctance to better serve the gamer is so transparent that I can't ever seem to support them.
