The fact that Sony did not include a case or even had one ready to sell day one tells me that they had zero intentions on this thing ever being taken out of people's houses. It's such a specific design and shape that it needs its own molded case.
Lots of handheld devices come with no cases or if they do they are like £700 legion go’s. Even the ally you have to buy the more expensive one to get a case. This is £200.
@JA-uz7se you're correct, lots of them don't. But those that don't have cases available day one to purchase separately at the very least. I was surprised by ASUS's decision not to include it for the ROG Ally, especially since Valve includes a case with every single tier of Steam Deck.
@@coltsrnumerouno yeah I agree with the ally it’s very weird as it’s so expensive. Lost opportunity there. Personally I don’t think Sony will release a case and they will wait for 3rd party companies to make them. Venom in Uk are making a licensed case available next week I think as a bundle and you can easily grab something off amazing. I got a hard shell and screen protector already just waiting for the case. Them free days are long gone when they tossed loads of free accessories. I’m not surprised it doesn’t come with anything, nothing ever does apart from the edge case. Kinda shame as I wanted an official case for my psvr2.
@kur0o0 right, which is why I said I don't think they ever intended on anyone actually using this outside of their house. A lot of people are taking it with them is the thing though. A fitted case as an option would have been nice to have. Especially with such a large exposed screen.
This kind if honesty and criticism are the exact reason I love your reviews man. Kind of insane how IGN gave this an 8 and the steamdeck (which can also use remote play) a 7
@@alexh7513too bad the product intended to do a hyper specific thing got outdone by a completely unrelated handheld system at the same price as an accessory and proprietary wireless earbuds.
If you rate a Steamdeck based on its ability to remote play and controls, yeah, it is worse than a Portal. Now, if you rate based on things the portal wasn’t built for? Yeah, of course it wins. Try rating the Steamdeck as an entree for a mean, yeah, it’s a solid 0.
It’s a great device for people with very specific needs. I’m a 36yo dad with 2 babies at home. I have seen my backlog extend like crazy lately and I have finally been able to play ff16 with little but no hickups when everyone is asleep, in the bathroom (i.e. the casual gaming room) or here and then when the opportunity is there, without needing a sofa. I love my PS Portal, but I admit it could raise a few frustrations to some.
Feels like spending 200 dollars for something that phones already can do is a waste. Considering this thing comes with WiFi 5. If you have an Iphone, it will outperform this thing.
@@namenight7158exactly. I can stream my PC on phone from work smoothly .this thing is just a money grab by sony.lcd display, not Bluetooth,no wireless headphones, wifi 5..fanboys will spend their blindly anyway.
Since this was announced I had a huge feeling it was essentially a wiiu gamepad (without the ability to add extra functionality to games) with maybe a little bit of stadia. We all know how amazing those products were
Seeing your test at Starbucks confirmed what I had been saying. This device vs. Spotty internet in public places is it's down fall. I don't think its designers really thought about how bad connectivity over wifi is in this country.
The games I play need a connection that's bullet proof, sadly my home WiFi although the best you can buy, just doesn't give me confidence that my connection is going to be stable for 20 minutes. All my gaming devices use LAN for this reason
@fabolousjada5070 Some people don't have the luxury of a 5g hotspot. It's a monthly bill that doesn't fit the budget. Would be great, but it's not practical.
@@NathanCundiffThen don't buy one in the first place? It's an optional accessory for the niche of those who already use remote play on their phones and tablets but premium. Mobile hotspot is free, I'd just suggest you have an unlimited data plan or to monitor your data if not. I advise anyone who wants to buy one to test remote play first to see if their Internet can even handle it and to throw out an extra 100 over Backbone because it's an uncomfortable pos and not worth more than 25 bucks for what it is. As for me, it's perfect and I'm enjoying the heck out of it, especially when the wife or kids are using the TV.
You want a portable system, they’re more than enough out there for the “fans”. A new Vita can come out tomorrow and people will complain that it doesn’t have any games as Switch or Steam (which is guaranteed to happen).
@@MithosDagon Then create at least a handheld what can play PS4 and PS5 games natively and no one expects you to play PS5 games at 4K 60fps, I think everyone would be fine with 720p 30fps if it was natively and you can play it offline and outdoor without needing God-like internet connection.
@@Official_RetroMania A handheld that can play PS4 and PS5 games natively will cost more than a steam deck. They would need to 1:1 replicate the console into a handheld since the games would not have been optimized for the handheld. So definitely not viable in the current market. It sounds good but not realistic.
@@MithosDagon Not really because the PS5 plays games at locked 60fps at 1440p in "most games" upscaled to 4K. For a handheld 720p 30fps it's more than enough and it doesn't need ray tracing. The Steam Deck can play PS4 games no problems at locked 40-50fps so why wouldn't it run PS5 games? Even some PS5 games run perfectly fine on the Deck, I have a Steam Deck and I finished Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart the new one at a locked 40fps on my Steam Deck. So why wouldn't it run PS4 and PS5 games natively?
@@Official_RetroManiaif sony releases a vita that can play PS5 games the PS5 isn't next Gen anymore and then they just compete with themselves for sales. As a fan it's easy to want these things and not consider the logistics of it. I absolutely love how you added the "annoying" events to the video like the audio skips, so we know exactly what you meant by that. Never thought I'd call a review immersive, but here you go haha. Really immersive review!
Technically speaking, this is a $700 USD streaming only device that is limited to specific WiFi networks. $200 for the Portal, $500 for the required PlayStaion console. I can buy a handheld that can do both streaming and local play for cheaper overall.
I love that in a board meeting someone actually said, and convinced Sony execs that, "Hey, remember the Wii U? That was amazing. You could sit on the toilet AND game! Let's do that!" Without ever researching the Wii U.
I don't get why it's being compared to the Wii U. Don't you play on both screens simultaneously with the Wii U? Wouldn't this just be a worse version of a Switch instead (since it needs to BT to the ps5)?
@@neonarcticfox1856 tbh I totally love the Portal. You need to set you PS5 to 1080p and then everything works absolutely great. The idea of the Portal is something which is perfect for some people but ofc not for everyone. Since I own the portal ive been playing much more.
I miss the times when Vita was a thing and you could literally play games on the go. Portal looks fun if you want to play at home or during a long loo session :D
Just a heads-up: do not use PS Remote Play if your PS5 is connected to the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band. It doesn’t matter which network your Portal is connected to-the PS5 must be connected to the 5GHz band or Ethernet for optimal performance. Additionally, disable any variations of 'Broadcast Mode' on your modern display, as it can severely bottleneck your experience. His connection dropping as he moves around the house is a strong indication that the host is connected to the 2.4GHz band. As long as the host (PS5) is connected to the 5GHz band, your experience should be smooth. Game streaming over a 2.4GHz band, however, is universally a terrible experience.
This encompasses everything I heard about it thus far. Thanks for taking it on the chin for us. I will get it when it is on clearance for $50. I loved the Vita and the PS4. Although not perfect it seemed to function better.
Man I don’t have any of these issues on my unit. It works great everywhere in my house (I have a TP Link XE75 mesh WiFi system and AT&T gigabit fiber). It’s also worked well for me tethered to my phone’s 5G and at family member’s houses. This is a real “your mileage may vary” device it seems.
He probably tried to stream with a dozen devices connected to his super duper amazing Fiber internet or had some other interference. He doesn't seem like the smartest person. I've streamed from my PS4 to my Vita and my PS4 and PS5 to my Steam Deck with no problems and if I can do that, I'm sure a dedicated handheld works just fine.
"works fine for me, by the way, I spent $500 on a router" cool buddy, thanks for the info! never would've guessed that! your comment is pointless. of course its going to work fine on a $500 router?? most people don't have $500 to waste on a router though
@@ryanw217 okay first of all, calm down. Second of all, the deco mesh is $199.99. I work from home and have a big family in our house. Our house has bedrooms upstairs and downstairs. I work upstairs and a family member who lives with us works downstairs. We needed a solution because our AT&T router/modem combo was just not reaching far enough. Our experience was awful. The Deco solved it for us and now we get amazing speeds everywhere. I didn’t buy the router specifically for this device. Chill, bro. And honestly, yeah, if you’re gonna buy a device that relies on a WiFi connection to literally function, you should probably make sure you have freakin good WiFi. I hardly think that’s a controversial statement.
Works great for me too. I’ve connected my modem to a Eero mesh router and connect the PS5 directly using Ethernet cable. I’ve taken the device to work with me and tested and the gameplay is still incredibly smooth.
I do like the idea of the playstation portal, but I did have a bad feeling that it would be executed poorly. I hope that it will be better eventually, but right now it just looks really rough. It definitely feels like it needed more time to be worked on and tested before it got sent out. It's always nice to see you review products and games.. you always have really good points about everything and you're honest about things, but also are looking at the pros and cons to anything which I think is really helpful. I would also just like to see you play more games or have more reviews about what you're playing because that's always fun. I got a little sidetracked, but yeah.. I'm definitely waiting for either a finished version of this or maybe they'll improve on the playstation portal.
Thank you for this very honest review. I really wanted to buy one of these Portals, but if YOU are having connection and lag problems and you have the best internet available in USA... then I have absolutely no chance at getting one to work on my very slow internet here in Australia. I was hoping the Portal would have some sort of bluetooth connection to the PS5 console (like a normal controller would have), so that you could connect at home and use it offline without having to stream over wifi. I really thought it would function over bluetooth and just operate as a controller with a built in screen at home, and then only need to connect via wifi if you took it out of the house. But it doesn't, which sucks and makes it inaccessible to anyone stuck with bad internet in their local area. I'm so glad I learned that even people with the best internet are having problems with it before I bought one. It would have been a huge waste of money. I know my internet isn't strong enough to handle streaming because I've tested the remote play app on my phone, and the best I can get is the Playstation menu, as soon as I try to play a game it starts having connection problems and cuts off. Since getting a Portal is no longer an option, I've asked a friend in the USA to help me order a Steam Deck instead (which sadly isn't available in Australia). The new Steam Deck OLED will be a much better purchase for me, because even if it takes a few days to download a game over my slow internet, at least once its downloaded I can play it offline, like I do with my Switch OLED.
I’m going to buy it and if it sucks like everyone says it does, I’ll just refund it. I’ll definitely buy it from a store and keep the receipt too and definitely not online like Amazon or something. After that, I’ll also try the ps earbuds and if they suck as people say, I’ll refund it too, so it’s not all bad
If you intend to buy any handheld device that isn't a switch, it has to be a Steam Deck. You can not only play a good portion of your Steam games natively, you can also stream your steam games from your PC, as well as stream other games from other stores (with some tinkering) AND you can stream PlayStation and Xbox Game Pass games too, so yes. You can literally do what a PS portal tries to do, plus a tonne stuff. And if you get the OLED version, you get better everything except haptic feedback.
@@jhix1816 ever thought you could be both? There are, after all, games that are never going to be physical, like a lot of indie games and, very slowly, some AAA games.
I actually advise people to not get 4k tvs. Games don’t display in 4k and movies etc. look the same on a 1440 tv but with the advantage of variable refresh rates
This is the reason why I just invested in a Switch Lite, and installed Android on it. Bought the PSPlay application and it can basically do what PlayStation Portal was set out to do (minus haptics+screen size). I can even play my Switch Games on it.
You can’t mod a switch lite like that. Even if you could, the android experience in switch is terrible. You’re better off getting an Odin or similar (I.e. use you’re actual android phone). The fact that you have to lie to dunk on a product is a little silly.
@@t4nk3d402 I’ve done it on the base switch. It’s not a good experience, barely works and slow af. Afaik you can’t jailbreak a more recent switch, including OLED and Lite, without every expensive hardware mods. It would cost more or at least the same for the mod alone than a PS portal. And you will have a worse experience than if you got a phone+backbone or a dedicated handheld.
@@Otacon1105 you actually can, I installed Android 11 last month. A 2nd hand switch lite from where I live is almost $100-$130 here + mod services which comes up to about $160 tops. The Odin Lite (cheapest model) would set you back $200. So if I get the Odin, I get to play Android + emulation + PS5/PC/Geforce Now streaming. If I get a 2nd hand switch lite, I get to play Switch games (full speed), emulation (not as great as Odin Lite), stream my PS5/PC/Geforce Now onto my Switch with Android 11 at a lower price. OR A Playstation Portal that can only Stream PS5 games Which do you think has a better value? Also, never really liked the idea of using a phone as a "gaming device." Please do a bit of research about Switch modding before commenting here and telling me that I have to "lie" to dunk on the PSPortal. The product is underwhelming my guy, just accept the fact. Even Wood had a difficult time getting everything to run smoothly. Lastly bit of advise. you can be a Sony fanboy and criticize a product if it's underwhelming/underperforming. You don't have to be a yes-man all the time my guy.
@@t4nk3d402 on the switch lite, everything performs just fine. Most likely performs the same on any Switch, tbh. I don't play Android games on it, I use it to stream GeForce Now and my PS5. 13:08 Doesn't matter if you have fibre or not...So many people thinking wifi=internet speed. It's the strength of your home network that counts. IE: Router quality, 5ghz band, channel congestion, ps5 being hard wired. If all those are in perfect condition, the device works flawlessly. The issue is most users won't bother to trouble shoot their home networks (or not understanding what wifi stands for) and they will hook it up to 5ghz on PS5, 5ghz on Portal. All through their ISP router and they will have an expectedly terrible experience. For the power users though, this thing is a godsend, though it should have shipped with WIFI 6.
I really like mine, works great to I get basically no lag (although I've never been sensitive to lag). I don't have a second tv so it's just easy to grab this and stay on the couch while the wife or kids have the tv. But I do hope they make the Vita 2 next.
If your ps5 was running on WiFi as well that would be the answer to all your lag issues. I’ve played everywhere with my portal so far and I’ve had no issues and I have fiber at home as well. I have my ps5 connected via Ethernet cable and I see little no issues with lag when I’m connected to it no matter where I’ve been.
You saw he kept playing the one game that gave him trouble. There are a lot of ppl afraid this device could become popular. Switch fans especially feel threatened, most others are positive about the PS Portal... 🤷
Switch fans do not feel threatened by a streaming device anymore than Tesla owners feel threatened by the dairy industry. The Portal has an understandable scepticism around it, given Sony's past blunders with addons, companion devices and handhelds. The PSP is the only one they didn't blunder on, unlike the Vita, PlayStation Move, Xperia Play, iPhone controller, and will no doubt screw the pooch on this one too. They've had more blunders than SEGA, Atari and Nintendo combined at this point, and this is counting the 32X, Virtual Boy, Atari Jaguar, and Wii U together.
Yep, it's not even that expensive compared to other stuff they've sold. For portable use around the house when the TV is in use or when visiting family or hotels etc it's great
@@docc19 you don't have to use your controller with this though, or drain your phones battery, and it's dedicated so it's optimised for this. Screens also bigger and better than your phone
Has not lagged for me yet been like actually emotionally happy with it, always used remote play cause i had to but it wasnt the best with a phone and controller there are a lot of issues with long play when playing like that, and the PS Portal fixed all of it! Audio is also good if youre at home but if youre out somewhere then of course youre gonna enjoy headphones more I wonder if there are just faulty hardware units all over the place and thats why it doesn't work that well for others? Or maybe a PS5 in a basement messes with the signal it sends out to the device? I really dont know since your Internet speeds are like 80x better than what you need for a really enjoyable connection
I was a bit on the fence when this was announced, but when I figured out I could remote play on my Steam Deck using Chiaki, the Portal was an easy pass.
I see this being good for parents who have to share a tv and want to get some play sessions in in their home. I wouldn’t take this out of my house. Gonna wait for these to discount before I buy
I am one of these parents. we have just on TV, and my only free time is in the evening. Most of the time the TV isn't free to use my PS5. It would be awsome if my husband could watch TV, and I could play on my Playstation. I love my Switch for that, but I have some Playstation games I want to play more. If this gets into sale I will buy one I think.
If you watched the video instead of jumping to the comment section, you would know that this peripheral is NOT a good option at all. You would have the same experience (without spending $200) just using a regular phone or tablet to stream games to.
@@TatankaTaylor I have a PlayStation backbone it’s a piece of crap hate taking apart my phone case every time I use it. Portal form and function is great. Bought one used off someone for $180cdn or $100 off msrp thing was used maybe once. Like it so far
I find it funny that Nintendo made this exact same thing with the WiiU in 2011, and Sony looked at that and went "oh that thing failed, and people didn't like it, so let's make our own". At least with the WiiU, it included a new console, and it didn't require the damn internet to function. Only downside to the WiiU is that you couldn't take the games around with you like the Switch, but when the PS Portal can't function outside of high speed internet, it's basically like not being able to play it portably at all, anyway. This seems like an utter waste of $200...
I think you need to fix your router, Wood. Theres lots of reviews out by now that shows it works very consistently if you have a decent router and settings are correct. If you're using the router you got from your ISP, then it's likely going to be a bad experience. A lot of people seem to think internet speed is important to use remote play, but it's entirely on the local WiFi connection when you're using it in your house. For me, it even works well on 4g hotspot in most cases. I feel like local WiFi/router quality should be mentionen in a review of a device that is solely based on that.
I hope Sony sees this and gets their act together. I’m not a Sony fan, but if they started to have more Nintendo-like games I’d be interested in a handheld device that worked.
Couldn’t agree more, I love being able to play games on the go. As an avid switch player I was so excited PS was getting on the trend but this is just sad and needs LOTS of work
Finally somebody doing it in non-ideal situations (what we would normally be in). Also I love how you edited the video to give an example about what you were talking about.
I have one and my experience with it has been very different, it has been like your god of war experience but with anything I’ve thrown to it… weird, so yes I find it fantastic.
Nah, its not worth it unless y'all have a very high tolerance for lousy performance. The portal has micro stutter and noticeable input latency. The experience on portal is as bad as playing cloud games on the Switch. If that's what you want, then go ahead.
2:26 got me good 😂 when you said “hold down the power button for…a while?” I felt that. When I got mine I pressed the power button a few times and I thought I got a defected portal. I disregarded the sticker over the screen saying it’s like 10 seconds of holding down the power button. Wild!
Really appreciate your thorough testing and review, Wood! I got the feeling from many other reviews that they were painting this in the best possible light. From the beginning, I suspected this device would be rife with inconsistencies. Streaming games can be wonderful at times but also incredibly frustrating. Maybe Sony’s hoping WiFi 7 will resolve some of the networking issues over the next few years.
I don’t think everyone else went easy on it. I think he just put his router in his basement and is somehow surprised when he can’t get a stable signal from outside it. I don’t plan to buy this, I use the backbone for streaming (same app basically) and have almost no problems.
@@balentay add a large memory card you can add your games to and some kind of game card like the UMD but smaller and they could have genuinely competed with the switch
Dude, if this was a true PS5 version of a handheld, it would cost MORE than $200. The portal is just a screen and dualsense with some internet features. Add to it PS5 miniaturized hardware, it would cost more than a PS5 console. Add a slot for physical media like a memory card, disc, cartridge and it would cost more than $800. Remember that the PS isn't simply a PC. It uses Sony proprietary parts, technology, hardware and software to make.
@@carleffique2687yeah i guess just everyone logic is failing here, they though if portal was mini ps5 then it will be cheaper because its mini, but the truth is the price would higher than actual ps5
@@carleffique2687 when did I ever claim I thought it was going to be a portable ps5? A portable system isn’t supposed to be just as good as the stationary system. The whole point is to lower the performance and have it be portable in exchange.
It amazes me how for some users the experience is nothing but great and for some just horrendous. Even with a 5G hot spot. I start to think that maybe it's a hardware issue on certain devices.
I think it just depends on your home network, the better your own network is, the better your experience, I personally wouldn't dare try playing over 5G or any mobile internet though (but I'm also an Aussie, and our infrastructure is crap, too crap to hotspot to a 5G network).
I’m quite happy with mine. I don’t think it would work well in public spaces. I use it within the confines of my home and it works fine when I can’t access the tv. I have noticed that I need to be well away from baby monitors and take the tv box offline to keep the bandwidth open. A wired ps5 connection also helps. This device isn’t for everyone. Each to their own
A few concerns about how this was presented: 1. You mentioned that your router is in your basement so if you have a normal 2 story house, it makes sense why you would have an iffy connection to your PS5/router from your bedroom (which could be on the top floor). If you had access points setup throughout the home, you’d probably see a difference/improved connection. 2. You used your hotspot from your phone, but there was no mention about the service your phone was getting at the time. If your phone only had 1 or 2 bars while in Starbucks, then that would explain why the connection is poor. Sony could improve this by including a makeshift web browser that could allow you to properly join WiFi from a hotel or Starbucks. However, with all of this, I’m sure most people wouldn’t have access points/a mesh setup in their home to improve WiFi quality. Also, I haven’t tested with FFXVI yet but everyone’s experience definitely varies with this device. Sony should probably do a better job at emphasizing these things so people don’t get the wrong impression.
It's odd because I've had mine since launch and have been using it almost every day, in and outside of the house, and have had zero issues. No lost or weak connection. The only issue I have had came from the PS5 itself. When in rest mode, it refuses to consistently turn on via remote play. Sometimes, I have to reconnect upwards of 10 times before it actually wakes. Never had the issue with the PS4. And I've tried everything to get it to work shy of a factory reset.
It's because a lot of people don't know how to set up a WiFi network for optimal performance. They don't realize that the router needs to be placed at the center of the house for the best coverage, as the signal is broadcasted horizontally in all directions. Or that you can get better performance by separating the 2.4 and 5 GHz access points with separate SSIDs to ensure your resource-heavy devices get the 5 GHz AP. Or that every device shares the same WiFi bandwidth, so static devices should be plugged in via Ethernet where possible. The PS5 especially should be plugged into the router via Ethernet so the Portal doesn't have to compete for WiFi bandwidth.
So basically the current leading devices when it comes to gaming (as in offers the most capabilities) are the Nintendo Switch and Steamdeck. I haven't seen the Steamdeck being marketed as much as other gaming consoles, but considering that Steam offers both PC and handheld platform gameplay, there is a way for players who play games running hardcore graphics such as FF16 on handheld. The only issue with Steamdeck right now is that apart from their own website, no local retailer sells it. I used to game on both the PS2 and PSP. So when I first heard news of the Portal coming out I hoped it would have the same capabilities as the Steamdeck. I didn't mind having to start a Playstation account and buy games for that account, as long as I was able to do so on the handheld device itself. It makes me wonder if Sony and Nintendo have an unspoken agreement to not overstep on their "specialized" gaming fields - with Sony running high-graphic games for console, Nintendo doing handheld at the cost of quality. Which if so, why? They could expand to more target audiences, since there isn't much options right now for players who want both [high-graphic games] running on a [handheld device] in which is [available to buy at their nearby retailer]. Those 3 conditions all together. Ever since I got the Switch, since I already have a gaming device that runs on both console and handheld, so I don't need another console device - especially one like the PS5 that is bulky compared to the Switch. I cannot easily fit a PS5 next to my desktop monitor. But considering I wanted to play games such as FF16 and FF7 remake that can ONLY run on systems such as the PS5, Sony creating an actual handheld device in which I can play FF games without having an existing PS5 system would be key for me. They could easily pull me in as a new consumer that originally belonged to a different target audience. Sony has done a handheld gaming device before, so there is no excuse. Meanwhile considering the Steamdeck exists, the tech to actually make a handheld device that runs games with hard graphics is possible. I happened to see a TikTok where the OP was wondering why Nintendo, who makes millions at this point, decides to not venture into that world, in which I agreed. Like do these companies not want... money? More profit and market share? Like they still can have certain games exclusive to their own platforms, but for game companies who want to release their titles to many systems as possible, Nintendo giving them that option would be ideal for them as well. Instead of teams like the Hogwarts Legacy case having to spend painstaking hours having to rework the graphics on an entire game. But eh, I only studied marketing, not business. What do I know.
8 inch 1080p screen is last generation technology. In that sense, the so-called Portal that could not even utilise a browser to confirm a hotspot terms and conditions...This $200 is actually far too expensive.
I’ll give Sony props for delivering an incredible looking device adding to the PS5 experience but it’s a little disappointing the negatives seem to outweigh the positives especially when most of those negatives didn’t exist when playing games on the Wii U gamepad released over 10 years ago. I’m sure Sony updates to improve the experience because the Portal looks pretty awesome
My biggest problem with this is I guarantee there will be SO many kids or parent's that have purchased one of these for Christmas thinking it's something it's not - that's not inherently on Sony. But it's really difficult to see what the purpose of this product is outside of the niche use case of playing your PS in another room. Which is fine, but that's a limited number of people surely
I think if you need to try and find a use case for it, then you dont need it. Also are the thumb sticks the same as the VR Sense controllers thumbstick?
I can kinda see the use case for it, like being able to play while lying on the bed. It’s great but it felt weird having to pay for another console to enable just ONLY that.
Yeah... I saw this coming. I remember when PS now was on the vita and this seems similar, definitely not worth the money. Might pick it up when it hits clearance

WOW I was a huge fan of their old handled and still think it looked amazing even till today. But from what you showed us (thank you for that) I honestly couldn't get one off these. I might consider it if it was $50 but for how it performs and with so much competition and the fact the switch has oled it's just a no go for me which is a huge shame as I would have loved to use this around the house or if I where staying away somewhere
I’m glad some people found an actual use for it. Idk why I care so much about it cuz I don’t even have a ps5 and I have a steam deck but it just fascinates me they did this and not a actual handheld
I have my PS5 wired with Ethernet cable & have had zero issues with the portal. My PlayStation is in my basement & the Portal plays perfectly from anywhere in the house I absolutely love it. Get an Ethernet cable !

What I've seen on other reviews for Wi-Fi streaming is to make sure it only connects to the 5ghz Wi-Fi band. 2.4ghz has more range but slower and not great for streaming.
Good to see an honest review.. I got this and watching other TH-camrs i was getting frustrated thinking was I the only one that was having issues. It’s not Made to work outside your home
$69.99 for a regular PS5 controller, $200.00 for the Duel Sense Edge. Why are we complaining about $200 for a decent remote play experience with a controller and screen as one (assuming you have good wifi and ISP)? The screen is perfectly sized for gaming and is actually very good! It also has the perfect aspect ratio, so no black bars. Being able to take both the screen and controller with you is a huge pro. Not having Oled is probably a good thing as well, as many games have static images that can contribute to burn in. This device isnt for everyone, but for me, as a parent, using the Portal is the most ive touched my PS5 in 2 years.
Considering Sony's past support of addons, handhelds and non-mainline consoles, like the PlayStation Move, Vita, the iPhone controller and PSVR2, I wouldn't get those hopes up too high.
I used to use the old fat PSP for this and turn on my PS3 at home and stream games to it from anywhere. It worked rather well I thought for its time, limited to what disk was in the drive or games saved on the PS3.
Is crazy how a lot of people on my twitter feed is loving the portal I think it comes down to your WiFi connection. Best advice is to test it with your phone before you buy a portal if you get a good remote play experience on your phone they you will with the portal. Also around 250gbs is the sweet spot apparently.
1. Test it with your phone. 2. Realise your phone can already do everything this can and more. (PlayStation 1, 2, P and Vita can be emulated on Android too) 3. Save your money for a new game or 4 instead.
This is prolly the most polarizing tech release since the switch oled being a parallel system release (which people eventually got over since they realized that they actually liked the better screen). The people who this works for absolutely love this and will fight to the death for it's existence. Anyone else on spotty wifi at best will likely return this brick on day 2. Its kind of the fault of the device since Sony's expectations are too high but more then anything its the fault of them expecting remote play to be good outside of a wired connection. 😕
One feature I wish this had is that instead of playing a game in splitscreen (like borderlands) it would allow for one player's image to be shown on tv and the other player's image on the portal. That way the portal is turned into a second controller and a second screen, doing away with the obnoxious horizontal split screen (since putting it vertical has some serious framerate issues). You think Sony coukd implement this as an update? But I guess a feature like that would have been needed to be implemented in the games already as well.
5:21 Yeah... its 'only' $200 because there is pretty much nothing TO the Portal.. It has no hardware as such; it's basically the two outer edges of a duel-sense attached ro a mere 1080 screen, it doesn't even have Internet connectivity or it's own blutooth.. I'd say this is OVER priced for what you get, or more to the point, don't get.
I’m not sure I’ll even open this tomorrow when it comes? What killed it for me was when you pointed out all you can do is stream games. Not any apps so I can’t watch a movie while the game is on. Thanks for the heads up!
@@-Burb That’s what I thought? So at least I’m not alone. I did try out the portal and it is pretty cool. You can have something on tv and still play your PS5. I had no lag, but my router is right under my tv.

Who else thought their WiFi was acting up when he emulated the video quality drop? 😂 it caught me off guard until he opened the settings and changed it back
Look, I bought one this week and I’ve enjoyed it. My reason of purchase would be different too most, but I got it so I could play in my living room when my children are winding down or have fallen asleep, and also when I am on night /sleep over shift at work. I only use wifi for my ps5, but the connection hasn’t been that bad, runs perfectly fine for offline games. I play eafc and have been able to grind squad battles, but rivals and champs was crazy laggy tbf.
Im genuinely confused at people who are upset that you cant bring this out without connection issues. Like its a controller with a screen fam idk what people expect besides dissappintment 😅
I brought one and it happens to me too with the Wi-Fi not getting connect but that’s doesn’t happen that often but I’m just glad that I was able to get one and it was the last one left in stock too at GameStop and I got super lucky I was able to get one and I don’t regret buying it either but that’s just me though
My experience at home was exactly the same as yours. Symmetrical 1 GB fiber connection (1 GB down and up), wired ethernet to my ONT and still I had numerous buffering artifacts, laggy performance-even on a game that should be undemanding (Diablo II Resurrected). I want my $$$ back. Too bad I bought it direct from Sony, so that ain't gonna happen. Soooo bottom line, I'm stuck with a $200 doorstop. Sux.

It's a controller with a screen homie .idk what people expect when they basically told us that it wasn't a dedicated handheld 😂
@kur0o0 right, which is why I said I don't think they ever intended on anyone actually using this outside of their house.
A lot of people are taking it with them is the thing though. A fitted case as an option would have been nice to have. Especially with such a large exposed screen.
The Vita was the absolute best design that has ever been made for a fully capable hanheld. Everything about it screams "This feels right".
It’s not a vita and not even close
The back touchpad sucked and should’ve been deleted from the vita and just had r2 and l2 buttons
Hard disagree
Vita was ahead of its time but that design was terribly uncomfortable
Everyone loves the Vita now 😂
This kind if honesty and criticism are the exact reason I love your reviews man. Kind of insane how IGN gave this an 8 and the steamdeck (which can also use remote play) a 7
One is an accesorie for the PS5 and the other a pc handheld. So these are two different categories.
They give a 9 on Steam Deck OLED though.
@@alexh7513too bad the product intended to do a hyper specific thing got outdone by a completely unrelated handheld system at the same price as an accessory and proprietary wireless earbuds.
Steam deck (either version) and Chiaki. 10 out of 10.

Fans: we want a portable system.
Sony: it ain't portable but it looks like one... Here enjoy.

I actually was like “This is just a worse Wii U” when i saw it first and i am still thinking that
The funny thing is, it's even worse than Wii U.
I don't get why it's being compared to the Wii U. Don't you play on both screens simultaneously with the Wii U? Wouldn't this just be a worse version of a Switch instead (since it needs to BT to the ps5)?

I miss the times when Vita was a thing and you could literally play games on the go. Portal looks fun if you want to play at home or during a long loo session :D
the vita is more a thing now then its ever been thanks to modding
my guy, you can still use a vita if you have one.
The way you edited this and visualized the audio and picture was awesome! Good Job Wood!
I've been going through Diablo IV on the portal and I've been enjoying the experience with minimal issues and lag

This encompasses everything I heard about it thus far. Thanks for taking it on the chin for us. I will get it when it is on clearance for $50. I loved the Vita and the PS4. Although not perfect it seemed to function better.
Yeah 200 is way too expensive imo for a remote play only device reliant on good internet just to play games

All through their ISP router and they will have an expectedly terrible experience. For the power users though, this thing is a godsend, though it should have shipped with WIFI 6.

As an avid switch player I was so excited PS was getting on the trend but this is just sad and needs LOTS of work
@@Strawberrystormi to be honest no handheld delivers that much what the PS Portal does. Playing PS5 games on a handheld is just crazy.

Same here! I'm really happy with my purchase. That being said, I use the Portal mainly inside my house.
Me too! I haven't had any lag issues. It's been working great so far.
Exactly. Check out LTT review on it for an accurate an unbiased review from someone who actually knows how latency works. @@Otacon1105
$200 would be a good deal if it didn’t require a ps5 to play.
Right? That would be a fantastic price for an actual portable system
You have to connect ur ps5 to an ethernet cable. Ive had no issues once i did that
My ps5 is pure wifi and im using a service provider stock modem with basic eero router… i can play bloodborn flawless.
He said a hot spot...lmfao...
Each to their own
A few concerns about how this was presented:
I'm only buying one to use my friends PlayStation games on it. I have permission before you ask.
but his console will be on and running when you play?
That's going to end well...
@@Swole_Gecko I now thank. I'm going to be sharing it with him anyway
I’ve had zero issues. I’ve even used my mobile hotspot at the park and it was buttery smooth. This thing is amazing!!!
This is the comment I was looking for. I'm surprised no one thaught about wifi hotspot. If this running fine on wifi it should do well on lte+.
Great, but when testing equipment, always factor in that not every situation is going to be that good.
Finally someone talking about the ridiculous connectivity issues

You’re like the first one that actually has criticism about this thing and highlight the fears I had about this thing
I think if you need to try and find a use case for it, then you dont need it. Also are the thumb sticks the same as the VR Sense controllers thumbstick?
They’re a tiny bit smaller
Ignore the first comment they’re a bit bigger than VR but not as big as dual sense
I can kinda see the use case for it, like being able to play while lying on the bed. It’s great but it felt weird having to pay for another console to enable just ONLY that.

@@Tarets So, just because I don't believe that it's worth the money means???? Seriously, just because something sells well doesn't mean that it's quality or even good. If we used that by a metric then that would mean the Pokémon switch games or Sonic 06 were high quality products. They just aren't, on top of that also consider how many were scooped by scalper bots and other resellers hoping to make a quick buck. There's a lot of factors that play into this beyond how well any product sells.

OK. I know some people use it when the living room tv is occupied and such but...I just bought a Series X for $350 new from Walmart. No way this is worth $200

I recently got this myself, it's not horrible, but surely they'll do an update on the handheld to make it better... here's hoping.
(PlayStation 1, 2, P and Vita can be emulated on Android too)
3. Save your money for a new game or 4 instead.
I love how you called it the PlayStation « portable » in the first 20 seconds of video. It reminds me of the podcast 😂

Man, I have been watching you for 3 years now. It started when pandemic happened. Time flies so fast. Deym
8:35 brilliant editing right here man🫡
I love any chance someone gets to point out just how far ahead of it’s time the Vita was & even more so the PSP.
Mines took a couple days to start lagging, but now it works well everywhere. I’ve played it from across the states & it even worked at the airport!!!
The $99 backbone does essentially the same thing except your phone is the screen. And I’m pretty sure you can play it anywhere.

Yeah... its 'only' $200 because there is pretty much nothing TO the Portal.. It has no hardware as such; it's basically the two outer edges of a duel-sense attached ro a mere 1080 screen, it doesn't even have Internet connectivity or it's own blutooth.. I'd say this is OVER priced for what you get, or more to the point, don't get.
Love that you had to splice the “XR” into the video
So I heard you need to change PS5 to 1080p, turn off HDR, and unplug HDMI from console and that drastically improves picture quality…
I have a steam deck that I current do that with. No need to waste $200 on something I already can do.
“We all have 4K OLED tvs at this point” your experience is not universal but God I wish it was
