You have to get the 2nd Generation Backbone, which is the one that recently came out, and it allows you to fit it over your phone case.
I gotta give you a slow clap bro for an excellent video I agree with almost all your points. And I agree if you have $200 the portal is obviously the better choice. But you also forgot to mention when factoring in the price that the backbone can be used to play gamepass as well as some native iOS games on your phone. And more importantly can also be used to remote play from ps4 whereas the portal is limited to only the ps5 and that’s it.
I don't feel anyone should do that. In that case just buy a much cheaper $200 portal.
@@jeffcarrier9808 unless your getting some crazy cheap deal on an old phone off EBay or something that seems kinda silly. You’re buying way more tech than you need to just do remote play. If you already have an old phone laying around that your not using then that would be more practical as you already have it. I was going to do that with my IPhone 6s, dont ever trade in my phones, try to repurpose them like an IPod. But Xlcoud didn’t work too great on a 6s. Remote play works fine on it though
I have 2 phones dedicated to just gaming a iPhone 14 Pro Max and a galaxy (cant remember which ones) the iPhone is hooked to a backbone but I got the portal because of screen size and comfort the galaxy is hooked to a gamesir controller o use it for emulation games
I never and will never use my phone in dedicated gaming.
People do tho lol
Well you can keep using the portal . Rather use my phone , connects to internet faster and less problems down the line.
I've started using my galaxy s22 ultra to remote play and plugged in the nreal / xReal glasses. 100' screen projected and it was not bad. Normal ps5 controller Bluetooth connected.
Ps5 was in Florida.
I was in Peru.
Spidey2 , still killing symbiotes hardest lvl.
It worked.
I'm not downplaying the portal but I'd say from what I've heard all over the Internet the backbone is fine but definitely shouldn't be used more than an hour tops but if you got the portal then that's great since it's a lot better in most ways
@@BlaznAngel Oh I see you've taken it to the next level!
People hate Portal but it is always Sold out... they need to understand that this system is not handheld but a good remote play if the TV is used by either one of your family, this is why this system is called "Daddy's handheld".
Facts 😂
I personally don’t hate it , I sold it because i hardly played due to it always lagging . Backbone connects so much faster and doesn’t lag. Can connect to WiFi and 5g independently . You don’t need to turn on your PS5 to play .
The portal is a glorified wii u controller.
I got a portal in the second round. I’ve loved it and had little issue so far. But have mostly only used it at home. I’d heard of the backbone but was never interested in it. I like dedicated devices for things. I don’t think I would have ever got a backbone to play games. My phone screen just feels too small. And I can never tell the difference in refresh rates and all that. The portal screen is beautiful and a good size. I would definitely suggest people go that route if they have the money to spend.
Fell in love with the portal over Christmas break as i was over 1,200 miles away from home (My PS5). I finsihed spiderman 2 from start to finish on my portal while being 1,200 miles away from home with little to no issues. Whats even more crazy is that my in laws where i was only get about 30 mbps down and 10 up as they live in a small town. Being able to finish a AAA game that far away from my system on a dual sense with a screen stuck in the middle, still blows my mind right now. Appreciate your reviews on the portal, as your reviews pushed me to buy the thing, which helped me not be completely bored at the in laws this Christmas 😂
That has nothing to do with this video. This video is showing meant to introduce you to the backbone one which you can play more than just PS5 remote play with it.
Ok, and whats your point? Was sharing my experience with the portal. I am also refrencing his past videos about the portal as they persuaded me to purchase it.
@@SourStrawberrys backbone is way better !
@@erickpenaloza1you clearly don’t have a portal 😂
Meanwhile I'm in my house and get lag on my portal with 1gb internet
The problem I have with the backbone is the joysticks placement. The D-pad is not good for fighting games. PS Portal handling is better.
You have to take out the pads inside the backbone grips for you to use your phone case.
The backbone makes me curious about the possibility of attaching it to an OLED tablet. Would probably be great but with added functionality of having a web browser, bluetooth, etc.
i wouldve considered the backbone if it opened wide enough to hold my ipad mini 6.
Backbone version 2 allows cases to fit. It works on mine, but they have to be smaller sized cases. I don't have any problem with mine fitting. I also got it for 60 bucks around black Friday.
Yea I think my cases are more on the thicker side
@@CKidM if you're unsure of the version you got, it says it on the bottom of the box, if you still have it.
@@ZekeBarzahd he’s using a lightning port , meaning it’s the old backbone . The new version is USB-C optimized for IPhone 15 pro max !
@@erickpenaloza1 good call out. I don't have an iPhone so that thought didn't cross my mind.
@@erickpenaloza1 I was gonna say, the case he showed looked the same size as my phone case, if not smaller.
The backbone comes with an adapter for larger phones, at first I had the same problem but when I double check the box i found it and it keeps my phone steady and secured
I ordered mine from the backbone site for free. Didn’t even pay for shipping
Mine came with an adapter in the box and when I set the backbone up on my phone they also sent me one in the mail for free just for setting it up. Came in the mail like 2 days later
I still give it to the portal. I do not tieing my phone and screen is way to small. Don't get me wrong, remote play app is amazing. The backbone is a great device but at end of day I want my portal in my hands.
Same I have both and the portal makes my hands not feel cramped and I can play for a longer time on the portal
Hit that like button FAM!
Aye idk why this cracked me up 😂😂. Salute CKidd!
I purchased the backbone instead and absolutely love it for my 11 pro, granted I could’ve got the portal but decided to wait on the 2nd gen just in case they decide to take a vita route. The backbone definitely gives me a the psvita feel more then the portal. You can access many different game clouds and systems which is a major plus
Same. I also never play remotely so I got the backbone to see if I’d actually use it.
Rumors are they are making a new psp separate from this so we will see if this becomes a wasted device
My phone turns gaming mode anytime I connect a Bluetooth controller/ backbone, and have never had the same heat issues he’s talking about when using my backbone. I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max.
It’s also big to note the portal can’t connect to WiFi you that needs a sign in. Places like Starbucks, airports/planes, hospitals etc. really limits you
Some phones like the samsung note10+ thru the new s24ultra have a feature that let's u share wifi that your phone is connected to acting as a Hotspot for the portal might work with your phone to works well
Another thing worth mentioning is that the portal can connect to the PS5 directly when at home, (like vita and PS4) so even with a bad Internet connection there may be some use, while when using the PS remote play app at home you are still streaming from your ps5 via your router to a PlayStation server then back to your phone, potentially putting double the strain on your router compared to playing away from home...
I got my son the portal for Xmas (for both of us really 😁), it's amazing, I've used it over my phones hotspot, my WiFi, my in-laws WiFi, it's been practically perfect, a few resolution issues occasionally, but totally worth the money
I've been using my phone ever since I retired my Vita for remote play. It feels so good to leave my phone free and just use a Portal instead. I also can't go back to the small screen.
See this is what made me go down another path. Had a buddy that had a backbone and the screen quality and higher refresh was amazing. I ended up selling my portal...and got a OLED Steam Deck. The ability to use HDR with a higher refresh than the portal...I have access to my steam library and now my ps5.
Wait you can play ps5 games on steam deck?
@newagehero9605 yes you can setup remote play on the steam deck. Look up Chiaki 4 Deck
@@newagehero9605 steam deck is a basically a PC, so yes, you can run PS5 games on it through Remote Play
You tried multiple cases but were you aware you could replace the little rubber pieces on the device? The backbone should come with replacement rubber pieces to accommodate your phone's case.
Isn’t the $99 price point kind of irrelevant if you’re talking about investing in a second phone “just for gaming”? If you have 2 phones, cool, but….idk. I decided today I was gonna either get a portal or a backbone, and I’ve been doing research all day, and a backbone worries me. Mostly the temperatures your phone reaches, button placement is a concern. Seems to me the only advantage of using a backbone is the screen of your phone (which seems to be sort of irrelevant due to the temperatures), and having WiFi and a network. 🤷🏻♂️ leaning Portal
The smaller sticks are for the exact same reason as the even smaller sticks on PSVR2... to reduce input delay. They require less work and movement from your thumbs.
That’s not true 🤣🤣🤣 bigger stick would have less input lag . Look at the PS5 , Xbox , and Scuff controllers. There big for a reason
I have used both and I prefer the Portal. Using the phone is ok, but when you’re getting phone calls or text messages it interrupts your game. Also like mentioned it does drain your phone faster and gets hot. Eventually you might break these $1,000 phones because you wanted to play games
I just got my portal tonight. I just got a new gaming router today as well in which I needed to get a new router anyway. I got the backbone a couple weeks back. Heres some things I noticed on local the ps remote with the backbone with my s22 ultra and even multiple iPads with os remote play ,it stutters and struggles. But when remote on 5g mobile data on my s22 ultra as long as I'm stationary or on another network away from home the backbone on ps remote play works phenomenally well...
Now with my portal I just got I have no problems whatsoever on local or remote on someone else's network so far. It just freaking works. So this leads me to believe the portal has some type of proprietary software or hardware or both that makes it stream better. I also learned the ps5 does not do well with cat8 ethernet cables for some reason. It should just default to the maximum speed it can handle even if cat 8 cables are used but it doesn't. I tried 3 different brands and they all have the bad performance. Just regular cat5 or even cat 6 cables work well.
You can get a rubber adapter for the camera bump with the iPhone right off the backbone app for free, it’ll help the phone fit more securely in there. I used the backbone for about 6 months until I got my Portal. It really served its purpose and I had a great experience with it l. But the portal, It’s undeniably a better experience vs gaming on your phone with the backbone. The larger screen and feedback from the controller help immerse you more into the game as well. Anyone saying the backbone is better than the portal probably just aren’t able to find one lol
My iPhone 15 pro max battery last longer than the portal , I get about 10-12 hours on my phone and portal I get 6 hours . Gonna return my portal , not worth $200 in my opinion.
If your comment is saying you get 10-12 hours of gaming on an iPhone, you lying. Stop the cap. You ain’t even gaming 6hours on the portal😂
The 2nd gen backbone is compatible with cases.
My Tab S8 plus streams remote play clearer and smoother. PS Portal has ease of use on its side.
I’m always at work and there down time so PlayStation Portal is best for me. Not dedicating my phone battery to gaming over communication capability.
Better comparison would be Portal Vs G Cloud or iPad w/controller.
I enjoy my portal but I have buyers remorse due to no Bluetooth and no browser login. When it works it’s awesome but it doesn’t connect faster than the remote play app.
Noted. G cloud on my radar
Don't forget the GameSir G8 Galileo Mobile Gaming Controller...controller is a beast with replaceable analog stick tops (x3), halleffect analog sticks and two back remappble buttons at $71 dollars USD is a steal compared to the Backbone One at $100 bucks
@@sportsgt Agreed. I probably would not have gotten a Gen 2 Backbone if I had known about the G8. I wish they would release a model for the iPad mini.
I moved and now the internet suck for both phone and p s Portable to remote play, it's all about good internet. In my old house, it worked perfectly not in the bigger house and Wi-Fi router is far away, it sucks.
When i use my backbone controller on my S23 Ultra, it doesn't drain my battery nor does it make the phone hot. Maybe it's a device dependent issue.
I wonder if they're gonna come out with a portal pro. It'd be nice no cause I would probably wait for that. Hoping there would be at least an old screen Bluetooth in.
Some other features that are missing
quick question for anyone who owns the backbone, is it only for remote play or do you not need to own a PlayStation to use the backbone. I do have a ps4 but I'd rather have something that I don't need to have my ps4 on to play and take with me wherever I go.
bro trying to find backbone's flaw 🕵🏾♂️ vs bro trying to find ps portal's flaw 👨🏾🦯
Portal's flaw is obvious, Backbone's flaw is hidden and that is, not everyone wants to use their phone as just a screen to remote play games on. It's tedious and a battery drainer
Wait you can take screenshots on iPhone? Remote play app blocks that on my phone. I suspect this isn't the only thing that is better on recent iPhone than Android.
😉
I really wanted a PS Portal, but the situation with the stick not working and a new device instead of a return made me think about the feasibility of the device. In my country, PS Portal costs not $200 but all $400, and the gamepad is not officially sold in my country. So here I am thinking, why would I want a device that might die, and even without official Sony support?
I bought the Logitech G Cloud, it costs $200 in my country instead of $350 in the US. Yes, it won't have Dualsense vibration, but you can put PS1, PS2, PSP, GameCube, Gamepass games from Xbox, Spotify and TH-cam. Sounds like a great offer and compensation to me.
Portal is amazing for the price I fell off gaming for a while till I got this I haven’t beat this many games in like 5 years lol brought my gaming energy back I don’t have to sit there and play on the tv back hurting
My problem with the portal is that you need to leave your ps5 on rest mode, so when I’m on a trip, which is the only time I would be using it, my ps5 is just eating away at itself, for like a week and a half, which is why I haven’t bought it yet
Obviously budget is an issue but i love my portal, it is so much better than the backbone. A lot more premium and the haptic feedback is 👌🏻
And I bet your hands don’t cramp up
@@benjimancha5515 definitely man
This was a great review . The smart issues with over heating is a problem I’ve encountered for sure . The sliding iPhone issue is a problem too
I could afford either 1, but still chose the backbone because you can play ANYWHERE with it. When the Portal does that, I'll get it. I do agree with the joystick placement though.
Misses got me the Portal for Xmas and I love it, I think she did it more for her, TV time, but I'm definitely not complaining, I haven't played my playstation on the TV since I got it, I take it to work and everything, best thing ever.
Does anyone know if a 3.5mm headphone jack to Bluetooth adapter/dongle would work? They’re like $30 on amazon and so thinking of buying one since that’ll be cheaper than buying Sony’s earbuds that I don’t need
Bought mine, had terrible latency issues, tried so many tips on the internet but didn’t help much so sadly returned mine. I would have loved to use it had the latency issues wasn’t a problem but it is a huge pixelated mess
Nobody gonna talk about how the back bone doesnt give you a full screen to game which i hate is there a way to fix?
Picked up the backbone over Xmas for $25 from Costco and so worth it with an older iPhone 11 pro
Weird to hear the Wi-Fi lag is the same on your portal
I thought it was an issue with the app
PlayStation needs to fix that
Great vid. Decided that I'm getting a portal. Backbone One requires a cell phone and I will not be using my cell for gaming ever. If your network sucks, don't get a portal is what I hear. Its very convenient for my usage.
Released 4 moths ago and they still unavailable. Lol. Crazy
you can use it for the web too you have to look in your settings on the console
In the box for the back bone. There is a small adapter. It locks the phone in place.
Where are people finding the portal for 200 I can’t find it for under 300
Well if the app is so good I won’t need a portal or a backbone I can just use a either a powerful Samsung tablet or iPad Pro and pair my ps5 controller to it easy best screen and gaming experience
I'm using the Gamesir G8, it has better ergonomics than backbone, I would love to see your opinion about it, but no lighting port option, only usb-c
Your backbone didn’t come with adapters so your phone don’t feel loose in the case?
My oneplus 10t charge in 15min 150w and when you play on him is not hot
I wonder how the latency is different between the two with button input.
I gotta do something with my older iPhones. I don’t need to buy it for dedicated for gaming. One will be repurposed with time due to the upgrade cycle.
But is your backbone a lightning connector or usb-c? That’s one thing you didn’t cover.
The only trouble I have with the portal is a lot of times it won’t connect or wake the PS 5 up
That barely happens to me(20-50 miles away). But when it did/ does, use the PS app and launch a game from there and then connect the portal
Bro you can’t even found one for the regular price. I, trying to hold out from paying 350. 199 is not even the real price due to the unavailability
400 $*
just bought Logitech G Cloud for 200 $
I guess it all depends on the gamer. I got a ps5 and an rog ally, the majority of my games are on ps, a few streaming issues on the portal would be manageable as with the ally you'll get get framedrops all the time specially if not plugged it, thinking of letting the ally go and buying a portal.
Both are great but i mainly play on the portal because i rather my phone to be fully charged and i rarely home but in work we dont use phone since they can overwhelmed you with the amount of phone calls you get from clients
Whats the link for the silicon case you have on your portal it looks nice!
Brooooo. You do know you can use a Bluetooth adapter to use ANY Bluetooth headphones with the Portal?
You do that and tell how that latency is....I'll wait...
@CKidM getting it tomorrow. I'll try it out. Weird how that would be that much different than playstation link
I love my portal, and I find it weird that ppl that are saying "it's a waste of money" why are there 10 or thousands of each video I see about it. Why waste your time learning about a product you don't like? Because your interested! Lol
Hilarious. And Facts!!!
When you test connect speed, do you normally test the Portal first? This would be when psn server locates your ps5. So the phone can skip that step if you connect that next. Because both use psn server to locate your ps5 first when you establish a remote play session (which is tracked by psn server).
I would never use a backbone. PS portal or G cloud
I got both. Costco had the backbone on sale for $49.99 with a $25 playstation gift card.
Having tried both i prefer using the Portal. The bigger screen and better controller made a difference. Also i don't have to tie up my phone. My Bluetooth headphones work fine on the portal when I plug the USB-C adapter in the front of my PS5. Got the Razer Hammerhead Hyperspeed Playstation headphones.and i haven't noticed any sound lag. Obviously this wouldn't work if i was away from home.
Any tips on how to make the portal work with some cellular data? Mine won’t sync to my iPhone 14 Pro Max hotspot but will connect to an iPhone 13 no issues some suggested resetting my phone
Bit of a late reply but I have to use a vpn for it to connect when I’m on cellular. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Here's a cheat code for anyone with a Ps5 , Xbox and PC you can get a backbone and setup your device to remote play on all three meaning all your systems will be playable on your device(phone)
But if you have a Ps5 only please get the portal it's made for it and will be the best and most comfortable experience in terms of maintaining how you play
How did you make a whole video and not show the gaming. Where my phone, steamdeck, and nintendo switch all out performed my ps portal 🙃
@CKidM There is a 2nd Gen version of the Backbone. It sounds like you picked up the older 1st Gen. 2nd Gen has slightly different packaging with an updated image on the front and it says for iphone & Android. It's also USB-C and has magnectic pieces that allow for using a case with your phone. I have a case on my phone and it fit with no issues after swapping out the pieces. If you plan on keeping it and are still within the return period, exchange it for the newer version.
I have both I can say the portal Is better for indoor in house gaming but the backbone is good for travel however has the issues were my hand cramp up when I play games like spider man and it’s hard to play and see text with the size of the phone of the screen. Overall there both good products with their respective issues
Are you gonna do a video on the S24 ultra
I just bought the backbone for my 15 pro max because I’m tired of waiting for the PP to come back on stock. I’m just being nit picky but there’s a slight lag but it’s definitely playable as long as it’s not shooters. That being said I’ve been remote playing dying light 2 and it’s honestly not that bad.
What update for the portal? What did it change?
I use my portal and my phone at the same time so portal all day not even up for debate 🤷🏾♂️
Hi so just to let anyone who has a portal you can use the internet on it you have to go to to the setting then internet……route to get to internet and it works fine
I would love the backbone if there was a case that would fit with it, the only reason I don't use it more often is cuz I don't wanna remove my case
You can get the Gen 2 Backbone, you can use it with most cases.
I have the dual sense edge controller and I agree. The portal should have the same thumbsticks that you can pop out good luck finding them thumb sticks too. I purchased the double pack for 60 bucks.Just because I couldn't find the singles anywhere to have them ready
The screen resolution on your phone doesn’t matter cause remote play caps at 1080p streams
Backbone usb-c version works fine with cases for iPhone.
I use my z fold 5 for my backbone and I also have the premium subscription. Get the subscription. It's definitely worth it. But I use my portal at home when I'm in bed or in another room. Works great. But I use my backbone for playstation mobile when I'm out or at work
Did we find this video helpful? Absolutely not, you didn't even mention the backbone app or the fact that it can play more than just PS remote play such as Apple Arcade, Gamepass, Playstore games, Steam, etc which is very nice. And the smartphone doesn't get hot at all when using remote play. It only gets hot when you're playing games that is downloaded on the phone via the play store, or apple store. If you're phone is getting hot it is because YOU have extra stuff running in the background that is not related to gaming. You didn't even touch the surface of the backbone, you only compared the very limited features that the portal has and didn't mention all the extra features that the portal allows you to do.
to me iphone is to small and erogonomics of the backbone is deal breaker for me i had it for 2 days returned i also got steam deck but i got to say portal with screen size and just the dual shock is most comfortable to play on
I distinctly remember you were rapping at some point on this channel. Is that finished now? Great video btw
If you’re unable to afford an extra $100 get the backbone. But just know that doesn’t make the portal a useless device😂 I will NEVER go back to a backbone for remote play. Had it with a solely dedicated iPhone 11 for remote play and the portal is what I wanted and more when owning the backbone prior to release💯
The portal is a good device, but with the backbone, you're not limited to only playing PS Remote play. I have access to my PC games with GeForce Now and Steam link. I have Microsoft XCloud as well as mobile games that are getting pretty good. You also have the ability to use any of your Bluetooth devices for sound, record on the phone for quick sharing. The backbone definitely can go toe to toe with the portal, especially if you have a foldable or small tablet that supports it.
Again, I think the portal is good, but for only $100 (and most of the time you can get for less), the only thing the backbone truly loses on, is the dualsense features, in almost any other way, the backbone gives you more bang for your buck.
I have 2 phone I use for dedicated gaming a iPhone 14 Pro Max and galaxy a14 I have the backbone for my iPhone and still prefer my portal over it
I don’t have these problems with the backbone. Maybe it’s because I have the iPhone 15 Pro Max Currently, with the “USB-C” backbone. I noticed straight away that I had to switch out the “spacers/adapters” with the ones that came in the box, because my iPhone wasn’t fitting perfectly. However once I made the switch both my iPhone and Samsung fit perfectly inside with cases. Also I’m not noticing any extra heat either. Battery life seems normal, with pass-through USB-C coming in handy with a long USB cable. With all that being said I much prefer the Portal because it’s a Dual shock with a 8 inch screen in the middle. The only experience thats better remote wise would be a iPad. My iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard using “modern” wifi (wifi 6 vs. 5 on the Portal) or mmWave/Cband 5G, then the Dual shocked plugged directly into it USB-C is damn perfect for remote play.
For cellphone use the Gamesir gallileo G8. Top notch !!
I’m not sure the point about 120 hz on iPhone means anything, because PlayStation remote play caps out at 60 fps. You’ll get the same frames regardless of the display. Of course the iPhone screen will look better due to OLED, but Portal will give you a much bigger display. Pros and cons to both.
Bro bro you do know all you ps game captures are in your ps app for iOS? Click the game library tab at the bottom and then click captures a toggle at the top. You can save them to your phone it’s very easy and simple. You don’t need to faff around with hard drives my g it’s all in the phone app 😊
As someone who is often sitting in another room from my ps5 hanging out with my wife or kids I can really see the draw of the portal. Currently I use my iPad with a controller, but that requires me to set my iPad down on something and isn’t that practical. And yes I could use the backbone but then I would have a smaller screen.
To me the portal is a nice medium with having a hand held device, with a decent screen on it.
I just can’t bring myself spend that $200 on it.
This. I think they missed on the portal but older family gamers love the versatility of it. You can be close enough to your fam but in your own world
They just need to fix an issue on connecting it more faster hoping on the next update
So if I’m in Florida and my ps5 is in Minnesota does it cut my ps5 on or does it need to be in rest mode ? I went to work tonight and was excited to remote play but it never connected so does the ps5 have to be on and just take the HDMI out ?
Leave plugged in wall and unplug hdmi
And don’t you have the $5 adapter so that the phone is more secure in the backbone?
Been using the backbone for over a year, it’s smooth as hell. I feel the portal is a missed opportunity and probably wouldn’t invest in until it’s capable of streaming games a la gamepass. Maybe wait for a 2nd gen version or steamdeck
I use my galaxy z fold 4 with a rig nacon mg x pro and using PS Play instead of the PS Remote Play
Since ive gotten my portal ive almost never play on my tv now. Though im a dad and usually cant get on the TV but it just runs so great that i dont even try anymore. Just pick it up and play
can someone point me in the right direction, i have a fold 4 and want to get a controller to play remote play, problem i have is that the port seems to be on the right on all of them which means the zfold when opened up and plugged in means it sits lower down on them all, i need a controller thats got the charger point on the left, any links would be great thanks 👍 i'm also thinking of using that just for now and getting a steamdeck later in the year, any pros or cons on that would also help 👍
