They already did the Vita and people didn't support it and they pulled the plug on it, they won't throw money at another portable again since the switch is dominating the portable gaming market, we're out of luck

They should build a portable version of the last gen system. I think it would be sweet if they went with this timeline. Main console then slim console and when the next gen comes, a portable version of the PS4. If the steam deck can run cyberpunk 2077 at a locked 30 then I don't understand why Sony couldn't develop their own version of that.
Or Vita. Couldn't agree more. People don't want to have to access a network just to play a game they enjoy. And before people say 'oh but physical media is going in the way of the dinosaurs', well not if we can help it and STOP buying things digitally. Digital gaming is not the way of the future that people think. I couldn't care less about convenience.
HUGE ADVICE! Currently the Portal isn't even able to downscale the resolution from your PS5. So if you left it at 4K/120Hz, then you're Portal will struggle. Any phone, tablet or PC would adjust it and so it saves the need to stream 4K to a screen that doesn't even support 4K. Make sure your PS5 is forced to 1080p, 60Hz.
And whats the point to have to knowing all this in a random youtube comment instead of the actual device you just bought. Such an amateur job from Sony.
As a ps vita owner, who owns over 150 physical games for it I think the portal makes the vita look like a legacy nintendo product, sure it had lots of apps and games back then but the screen is 480 p and even if its oled it looks worse than anything released today. I love the portal Im getting one.
in the era of powerful handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck, GPD Win or even the others like the Switch / high-end phones + emulators, i really dont understand why Sony decided to neuter this handheld by making it essentially a streaming device. Sony please make another PSP!!
100% agree. I got one to play over the road while I'm gone for work and don't want to pack my 5. I was thinking this was going to be similar to the PSP. But sadly it's not. They kinda shit the bed on this. Great idea less than favorable development
It doesn't need to be on the same network. It can take some time if you're on 5G and away from the PS5's network. It won't happen immediately, but it does work and others have proven this.
hi theo! been watching you from long ago. i really get amused by your humor and gameplay and just enjoy it. youre my fav streamer and the only one that i watch. thanks for everything and please show us more videos of the teardown game❤
It’s not even PlayStations fault remote play and cloud gaming just isn’t a reliable way to play games more times than not you’re going to struggle with connection the world isn’t ready yet
But it is Sony's fault that they are pushing towards it when they know FULL WELL that the world in general doesn't have terrific Internet connection. They THINK that digital/online only is the future, but nothing could be FURTHER from the truth. I couldn't care how convenient it may be.
@@ryukard666 Nope. Especially if not everywhere in the world has terrific Internet and you can NOT use it on Public Wifi networks which makes it practically useless if you want to take it with you. What was Sony thinking?

If your Portal isn't connecting by mobile hotspot, then there is something on your phone preventing the connection. Either a VPN being on or some other setting.
Bought my portal not too long ago, and as a security guard, this is a life saver. I work on a one man site in an office building, and the internet is really good . Living 30 mins away, im not too far either. 12-hour shifts are at ease now, lol.
The latency for me is a dealbreaker. Sorry Theo but that's just me. That and also the fact that you can't sign in to Public Wi-Fi networks that require you to accept their ToS which for me COMPLETELY defeats the purpose of taking the Portal anywhere.
yep, what you said is the reason why i requested a refund at PS Direct despite having it for 3 days but also PS Portable doesnt support Wifi 6 or 6E which to me is a very dumb move.
Charge half the price, considering you're getting a decent screen and the haptics of the PS5s controller but considering the limitations think of it more of a hands on switch with better handles/joysticks. It needs to be docked/connected to your PS5 to play, make it make sense. At least until the price comes down just a tad or it goes on sale and you're able to do more on it I think I'll pass as of right now. Will be enjoyable to just have my headset connected to it though, have my PS5 on TV off and still just have a blast being immersed in the haptics. Oh the imagination of what it could be.
If they just made an actual portable device that could natively run ps4 games AND remote play ps5 for 400/500 dollars then I can see it being better. But this device just feels so much like a niche to an issue that didn't exist
I’ve tried remote play on the phone/iPad before through my iPhone’s hotspot and at hotel Wi-Fi and it’s never been good. Like you though, I’ve been successful at work using the Wi-Fi there. Also, I’ve purchased an Ethernet to usb-c adapter for my iPad and made the remote play basically flawless. Good enough to play some serious games of Apex Legends. Wi-Fi has always been iffy for remote play in general, so I’m not surprised, but I have found that the portal seems to be generally better than simply using Wi-Fi on a phone with remote play. Also, this is a controller that costs the same as an Edge controller, it’s just another form factor. It’s a controller that you may decide is worth buying for you particular situation. For me, it’s great playing something like Elden Ring on the couch while my 4 year old kid is playing Tears of the Kingdom on the big tv. So far, I’m loving it, but for sure it’s not for everyone. I hope they make it better somehow though.
Hi Theo, just wanted you to know how much you’ve helped me a lot. For some reason you really remind me of my older brother, he works as a lorry driver driving up and down every single day, my name is Fox, just so you remember, love your vids maybe at some point you could have have the fans could play tag in gta online. I also been on the news twice :)
The potential is there. I’d ask for remote play no matter what network as long as both are connected to the internet I don’t see the problem, also a better screen, OLEDs are the way to go, HDR, & I’d sacrifice graphics for the 120hz frame rate if I had to. Still my favorite YTer pushing 10yrs or so now! You helped me discover the creativity & passion I have for creating and editing videos, you also helped me find the courage to upload and share those videos with the world. A picture’s worth a thousand words, all of these videos are priceless. You’re a wonderful person. I hope you never stop wondering, it keeps you with something to discover. That’s something my mother taught me. Initiative & ambition. & to always stay positive and share that positivity with the world. I speak for the racing game community when I say thank you for your dedication, your support of us, and your continued enthusiasm for what you do.
@@X-Horizon-24 I didn't even notice the delay on spider man 2. Either I was just stoked that it worked and didn't pay any attention to it. It felt on point to me.
There is horrid delay on any shooter like Fortnite or COD so the casual gamer will have no use for this garbage, buy a backbone for half the price with Bluetooth… you Sony zealots will praise anything with the PlayStation logo on it no matter how useless it is.
Airplane mode is actually really important. I got on a flight and didn’t turn it off. I ended up pairing with the airplane mid flight and luckily was able to make a safe landing due to my experience on Ace.😊
This device is made for mainly the people with children and those who don't have the time or space at home to play peacefully but still want to game..... it's a niche device (for a growing niche market) and as we all get older and have kids and start dealing with real life may not have the time we'd like to game. This gives you the opportunity to play in your downtime while the kids are sleep......while you're shitting, etc. My boys all have young kids and have been using remote play on BackBone devices when we run on 2k on nights they can play after getting the kids to sleep and I'm up. What they do to combat lag issues is to turn of the 120hz and turn down the resolution of the PS5 to get a better visual and less lag on their cell phones which they use. Yes it's a niche market but Sony has realized that we all get older and have kids........I can attest to having my nephew over often who is of a young gamers age 8-14. I can't sit and play my game in peace because all you'll hear is "Can I play???" then allowing the kid to play you'll for most intents and purposes not get your game back to play it or get stuck playing shit the the kid wants to play.
Actually, as a parsec user, I can't access my gaming PC on data, although I can with some cafe WiFi. The only way to use data is with a VPN to your home. WiFi (or fibre internet) works flawlessly from anywhere for some technical reasons to do with IP, ISP and stuff.
With the mobile connection, it can depend on your service provider. Their 'out of the' box set up just doesn't allow streaming from console NAT types. EE needed some custom network settings to get running remote play. This worked fine over 4G for me and also over 5G. That's both using my phone as a hotspot for Vita and Tablet, as well as directly on the phone using PSPlay.
So just for a comparison, I use my iPad, with a DualShock/dualsense controller paired running off my iPhones hotspot whenever I’m out of the house and I had no issues when I was on a roadtrip across the country, which is why this thing seems so pointless to me.
2 reasons why this is the best remote player: 1: a switch or steam deck can play games locally work but a switch needs to be modded to run remote play and if you don't have a steam deck there's no point in spending $400 for console you're just use as a remote player 2: a phone could work but it doesn't really feel like a handheld, it heats up fast, and just wait until you get a call/text/notification
It would not connect to my starlink wifi. And when it eventually did, gameplay lasted a minute at best before failing. Starlink signal was perfect, and no other devices have ever had issues. The portal is an expensive paper weight as far as I'm concerned. Total waste of money and a sad child.
I actually was frustrated that ps hasn’t had a handheld in a long while.. I’m super glad it’s not a handheld that can only play games made for it.. the idea is awesome as personally playing new games on my tv gives me a huge headache. It’s so bad that I haven’t enjoyed ps5 games at all but I enjoy switch oled games a lot. I don’t know what it is really.. is it better games on one platform.. not sure. Yes you can play steam games off your iPad with a controller but I play on my laptop with not the best video card. So, I’m excited that my ps5 at least provides the ability to play these games but thought a handheld would be a great idea. However, the fact that you have to have your ps5 running in order to play? As well as a super fast connection wherever you are is a bit lackluster. No airplane mode play for airplanes.. that the magic they are missing. These are just my opinions
I have a portal it has airplane mode I’ve played on multiple internets works like a charm if it’s not like fast food restaurant WiFi maybe some might work I prefer hot spot but it’s a really cool device I used to not play my ps4/ps3 games at all only ps5 ever since I got this portal I’ve been playing my entire back log of old games & I can actually talk to the family or friends rather than being locked in my room
Honestly I dont even think PS5 Pros will ever come : / last time ps4 pros came with the slim. we have gotten the slim ps5 but not yet the pro and plus who even needs a pro version? ps5 base is too overpowered for a console in this time. maybe after 3-4 years it might need a pro but by then you would have a next gen console.
Yea I’m about 7 hours away from home mine works no lag it’s on my hotspot sprint phone my ps5 is plugged into a land line at home that’s the most important part
@ you have to put your system into rest mode don’t shut it off completely, then make sure wherever your are u have a stable Wi-Fi connection so you can connect remotely
Tips: 1. Change your information on your ps5 if you getting this Device so u don’t get confused if u own two systems 2. Best quality playing offline not good 👍🏽 for online used at times
My only issue is the latency. The UK is behind on the Internet speeds I'm sure, cause I'm on reddit and gamers across the pond are having a blast. I can only play 3rd person games on mine. I've tried GT7 and it's OK, but I'm not sure if it's my network (I've heard I should invest in a router and not use the one that my isp ships) but right now I'm getting frame rate drops to what seems like 15-20fps when playing online so I avoid it.
Yh the UK doesn't have very good mobile network speeds or internet speeds. Most of our WiFi networks are half fibre based on the old copper networks rather than full fibre to the premises. And the mobile networks aren't full 5G instead 5G ultra wide band which is slower and essentially just a slightly faster 4G
I think Steam Deck might even be cheaper than you mentioned because you can get a Referb one for way cheaper. Where the 512GB version is same price or cheaper than the old 64GB version.
@@XAV-117 it has a worse screen (800p low quality same one used in the cheap 40£ Amazon fire tabs) vs 1080p on the PlayStation portal worse battery life. I am not saying the PlayStation portal is a great deal, but it isn’t really comparable. Also I haven’t had a good experience with the steam deck it is very buggy and feels like a beta product. You are better off using a tablet if you want to game stream.
Yea from what I understand the portal will connect to your ps5 as long as they're on the same NAT type. For instance if you mobile Hotspot your portal and have a separate mobile Hotspot for your ps5, it will connect. However it won't work well, definitely better to be wifi on wifi
I love the facts that you need to have a ps5 to use this 😂😂😂 sony be like give me moneyyyyy , also i think about all the parents who's gonna buy this for the kids without knowing its not a console but just a streaming device
they should have made it native ps4 games download and remote play to the ps4 only. also add a controller function wired/wireless connect to the ps5 to have some wii u type of gameplay
Your PS portal will operate a lot better if the PS five is connected hardwire instead of Wi-Fi learned that because for like the longest my PS portal was always lagging until I decided to go ahead and connect the PS five hardware have no problems. I’m playing the PS portal all the time.
thank you for this review. I WAS thinking about buying this as a gift for my brother. This device seems to be mostly unreliable and you saved me a lot of money. Thank you :)
The only things that are different with the PlayStation Portal compared to a Steam Deck or something like a Backbone is that it has adaptive triggers and vibration when streaming your PS5 games on remote play, so it’s still worth it I think.
I dont know how all these youtube guys are getting such good video quality on this . I have really good internet at home 1GBps and the ps portal lags alot a lot and is super glitchy even when i am at home.
I just wanna be able to use the portal like a dedicated wii u controller for the ps5 to boost immersion in every game. Can ya imagine the stuff developers could add to their games that take full advantage of that screen and controller?
What you hard core games FAIL to. Realize is the average person really doesn't care about all specs and what i cant do. They are just happy they can easily play their games away from their system
i don't understand the point of this device at all. There are so many similar possibilities on much better prices, in particular cuz you'll have already paid 500USD on a PS5. Another future champion of the used market.
Yes it works very well took it to my sisters house 30 miles away felt very close to a switch didnt even realize I was online . As long as you have a decent wifi connection your good to go.
I haven't had any problems with mine. I use hotspot at work and play Jedi survivor with zero issues. I absolutely love this thing. The reason I got the portal because my man cave is about 200 feet from the house and since I have small kids who like to see me so i cant do any hardcore gaming until there bed time but now I just sit on the couch and play while they watch cartoons. Also I have my play station wired into my router I don't know if it make a difference but i haven't had any problems.
Blah!... All the people crying about it... I was playing it on my steam deck.... But for sony to give us the full haptic feedback and a good screen.. What else do you want them to do when they gave you the world during the p s three era And it got hack and devs Was losing to pirated games..
I mainly got one because I don’t always have access to a tv and after using it for two days I have been using it to play games yes it’s not perfect but everyone has their own opinion
Here is the big problem with away from your house network play and if you aren't using use router you are directly connecting the PS Portal too, like a friend's home setup or work (like he did), and if your phone hotspot is not working (like his wasn't) you more than likely will find your next option won't work either. That is being able to connect to any publicly available Wi-Fi (like cafes, hotels, etc.) because almost every case (even though they may have excellent bandwidth) you need a browser to connect (i.e. agree to terms of use, enter a room number, temporary password, etc.) and the PS Portal does not have browser. Even if you can get your phone to work as wi-fi hotspot you may find if your cell service has set data limits and it throttles after certain data, or moves you from 5G to 4G if you pass a set cap or the internet data cap is relatively mid to low, all those data limits issues may come quite quickly with any extended away from home play using your cell service.
If this portable is another vita .. I grab it ! It looks good but need a ps5 and remote play with wifi . If this could be brought out and overseas , I’m sold
As an owner of both PSP and PSVita I'm insanely disappointed Not only do you have to be online every time but you also need to have a PS5 in order to have access to games Which kinda defeats the purpose of a handheld
Its a remote play streaming device. Of course u have to be on wifi to stream anything. An actual handheld gaming system would cost way more and need proper 3rd party support.
Man it’s been a while since I’ve seen one of your videos. Used to watch your NFS videos years back, n now you got a Porsche. Happy for your come up bro
The not having a browser is not a problem! I recently stayed in a hotel and my ps5 walked me through the process step by step worked right away, the just of it you connect your phone/laptop to the ps5 wifi signal and then pick the hotel wifi it will take you to sign in page and then when you sign in the ps5 is hooked up aswell. So I assume the portal would have same option since there is no browser.
7:08 That's what I do! Although it doesn't really work on Gran Turismo 6 (Yes I have outdated tech, I have a PS3 as my only Playstation, Xbox One S instad of Series, and a mistreated Nintendo Switch).
Honestly.. feels like a waste of $200.. I have a Home Theater and my PS5 is in another room, I have gig wifi. No difference with using my iPad and a controller. 1. Why couldn’t they provide something with internal SSD to download and play games offline? Playing games offline without the requirement for an internet connection is the game changer. More common uses would be on an airplane, traveling on highways, or even buildings with private wifi access. Nothing really beats the switch in this category- but playing games offline with a handheld would be amazing!
Not unless you have it tethered to your mobile data. In which case why not just use your phone to begin with? Why pay £200 to have to jump through all these extra hoops?
I've realised with the portal is that it struggles at home depending if you find a room where it gets a gd connection to play yes you gunna get a bit of lag but does perform to it's needs. But when or if you travel to places and connect to say a hotel train or holiday WiFi it performs at it's best

And you can't change those settings using remote play thanks Sony
Ya never had that problem, ever.
And whats the point to have to knowing all this in a random youtube comment instead of the actual device you just bought. Such an amateur job from Sony.
@@TiagoBullets cause it sounds like bs. I've never changed any setting and it runs fine, just like it always has with all remote play devices.
As a ps vita owner, who owns over 150 physical games for it I think the portal makes the vita look like a legacy nintendo product, sure it had lots of apps and games back then but the screen is 480 p and even if its oled it looks worse than anything released today.
I love the portal Im getting one.
don't waste your money.
Sounds like you've already convinced yourself 😂
Just use your phone with 3rd party remote play not the Sony one
I don't know how in the world you think this compares to a Vita, but you do you.
I have 3 modded OLED vitas 😁 they make the portal look outdated 💯 absolutely garbage technology and way outdated
in the era of powerful handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck, GPD Win or even the others like the Switch / high-end phones + emulators, i really dont understand why Sony decided to neuter this handheld by making it essentially a streaming device.
Don’t forget that when you’re asking for the vita again, make sure that they make it work with an SD card or have enough on board memory!
Sony is going to do Sony things. A new Vita means they'll make some new obscure memory card that will cost way too much like always.
@CykoX they went with m.2 drives with the ps5. So you never know. But still, sony is sony.
They should spin up the ol' PSP manufacturing line again. That sold 5 times more units than the Vita.
I liked this when you shouted out the return laws, like a true brit
Android has the ability to do more dumb things thats why i love it
I can't wait for the android mod community to get their hands on this I know they will do some wildness😂😂
hi theo! been watching you from long ago. i really get amused by your humor and gameplay and just enjoy it. youre my fav streamer and the only one that i watch. thanks for everything and please show us more videos of the teardown game❤
PlayStation Portal i belive can be as expensive as Original PlayStation 5.
So there is no reason for this device to exist for now...
@@ryukard666 Nope. Especially if not everywhere in the world has terrific Internet and you can NOT use it on Public Wifi networks which makes it practically useless if you want to take it with you. What was Sony thinking?
@@jordanking7711ima truck driver and i have a 25$ mobile hotspot and I get 100gb of wifi for 35$ it's well worth the money for someone like me on the road and with no tv
Cool points for the styling of the device. I like the way it lights up on the sides.
Once you can cloud stream everyone will be blown away its the most comfortable and best screen size on a handheld currently on market
That and they need to be wired to 5G. Bots are going to get REALLY mad and up the trolling extra hard if this happens though.
The Steam Deck OLED is already here.
And how many people will spend $500 on that device?
The fact that I went to another city about an hour away and was able to play is a win for me.
I work fifo so I work 8hrs away from home and can connect my phone it’s so good can’t wait for this
This the comment I was looking for
There was no Input delay at all even an hour away?
Hi mate I have EE and can’t connect to the portal hotspot . Do you have the same issue ?
9:46 you can't ignore this stutters when you actually playing, it's something that breaks the experience.
So just for a comparison, I use my iPad, with a DualShock/dualsense controller paired running off my iPhones hotspot whenever I’m out of the house and I had no issues when I was on a roadtrip across the country, which is why this thing seems so pointless to me.
You still had latency, which this device does too, which is why it shouldn't exist
Love mine. I’ve used it in a handful of hotels. Some work better than others. Also have used it at my in laws house. Works flawlessly at my house.
Why didnt they make it like the WII U ? Stream directly from the console to controller without need for internet.
2 reasons why this is the best remote player:
1: a switch or steam deck can play games locally work but a switch needs to be modded to run remote play and if you don't have a steam deck there's no point in spending $400 for console you're just use as a remote player
2: a phone could work but it doesn't really feel like a handheld, it heats up fast, and just wait until you get a call/text/notification
Only problem is, it needs wi-fi to be used just about anywhere, so you can't take it to places such as in an airplane.
Most airlines offer free wifi now.
@@anthonyg1307You have to go to a sign-in page to access it, no?
Been asking this question for the past 3 days! Great Content Brother!
Interesting there's Airplane mode for a streaming device... Could there be true standalone Portal alongside PS5 Pro's launch?
After seeing a strip down of the Portal on other channels, unless it is using cloud streaming that would be impossible given the tech on the inside.
Honestly I dont even think PS5 Pros will ever come : / last time ps4 pros came with the slim. we have gotten the slim ps5 but not yet the pro and plus who even needs a pro version? ps5 base is too overpowered for a console in this time. maybe after 3-4 years it might need a pro but by then you would have a next gen console.

yes yes you are mental at times
Tips:
1. Change your information on your ps5 if you getting this Device so u don’t get confused if u own two systems

The only things that are different with the PlayStation Portal compared to a Steam Deck or something like a Backbone is that it has adaptive triggers and vibration when streaming your PS5 games on remote play, so it’s still worth it I think.
At first I thought it was fake but then I looked it up and said holy s**t

I haven't had any problems with mine. I use hotspot at work and play Jedi survivor with zero issues. I absolutely love this thing.
I can't play racing or fighting games on the portal, but for RPGs and stuff like that works fine.
interesting. I'm surprised it doesn't just have its own sim card slot
Well dude it's not a phone at all and is a new Wii u pad only

The absence of a web browser to log in to hotel/cafe wifi is a major deal breaker
Agreed. Completely defeats the purpose of taking your gaming on the go in my opinion.

The portal is called the parent device lol as a parent it helps when the kids are home or when the wife is home.
Bro your hair and beard are on point 🔥🔥💯
I've realised with the portal is that it struggles at home depending if you find a room where it gets a gd connection to play yes you gunna get a bit of lag but does perform to it's needs. But when or if you travel to places and connect to say a hotel train or holiday WiFi it performs at it's best
