Love my Portal. I was shocked. My initial impression at the reveal, was “This is horse poop! Why not make a dedicated handheld.” But then I thought about how much I tried remote play on my phone (too small), and iPad (too awkward to use in bed or couch). So I bought the Portal and now I’m finding I’m putting way more time into my PS5 gaming.
Same here, I understand that I love gaming but what I love more is accessibility. The easier it’s for me to play, the more hours I will sink into it. I still have a 4K gaming PC that I’m rarely using because of being on a desk.
Feel the same with remote play on my phone. Steam deck remote play is very good and I was using that, but you get random screen flashes for up to 2 seconds long. I got the portal on day one… the experience in been great. No issues. I’m planing to use in house only, been a dad handheld gaming gives me the freedom I need. Traveling im taking the steam deck.

I prefer playing in handheld if given the option. This device has been perfect for me. I got the Platinum in Spider-Man 2 on it and am currently replaying GoW: Ragnarok. I cannot believe how good it looks.
Been playing the portal in Tampa while my PS5 is in Orlando using my phone’s hotspot and even playing like that it’s been smooth so this is definitely what I wanted…once I’m back home gameplay is even better and so smooth with no lag using my WiFi at 500 download and 20 upload speeds and my PS5 wired which I think is key to have a solid no lag connection.
This is thee comment I was looking for. I was thinking about using my Portal on my mobile hotspot. I wasn’t sure if I was wasting my time even trying this out but you talked me into it.
The main reason I won’t be getting one is my main use of my current handheld is doctor appointment, and the hospitals have Wi-Fi that needs to be verified by connecting to a browser and putting in a login and password problem though the Portal doesn’t have a browser so it can’t connect to a hot spot like that which is a very common setup for hospitals, schools and businesses. Since it has no native games such as a Switch does if you are in a situation where it can’t connect it becomes useless. I do realize for others it might serve their needs.
I wish it did work like a Wii U. All I want is a zero latency way to play my PS5 off-TV, a la Wii U. I don’t know why 11 years later and no one has figured out how to do what Nintendo did.
The portal is cool, but with the steam deck oled out I personally think gamers are better off spending the extra money to get that. You have a majority of your steam library, you can emulate basically every console prior to the ps4 and any games that don’t run on steam deck there’s geforce now or playstation remote play.
“Long play times of 2 hours or more” this was the point I realised how much of a hardcore gamer I am because I can’t remember a time i played for less than 4 hours and that’s a super light session 😂
@@ps4games164 exactly, I can’t believe the stream deck had such a low battery life, I understand it can “do more” than a portal but I’m getting like 8-9 hours out of my portal, it’s been amazing.
If you think gaming for 4 hours straight is a "super light" session, that isn't good or healthy! Remember that gaming for long periods of time with no significant breaks is not good for you, and gaming needs to be part of a well rounded life - exercise, spend time with family and friends, spend time outside in fresh air, etc.
I noticed the image looks smeared or blurry even with great internet. Mainly during fast moving games. Wish they had a Bitrate setting to up the settings for quality
This is still a cloud streaming system. If you have a bad internet connection in either locations, then you are out of luck or if you are at a shuttle hotel, etc
I mean, the screen and controller help DRASTICALLY with people who are just in the Sony ecosystem. The biggest issue with remote play devices is the comfort...and the dual sense is imo the best controller to come out this generation. Yes the steam deck OLED can be played offline but i simply do not play games on PC except the insanely rare indie and emulation moments... Portal is for those PS5 only ecosystem players, also being able to grind for trophies/grind for levels in RPG/Combo practicing in Street Fighter and the occasional shooter make this well worth the price as you can do it in complete comfort. If you play multiplatform? get the steam deck OLED..if you're primarily a Sony player? buy the portal..no brainer.
" i simply do not play games on PC" you can buy the same games on a PC instead and get a much better experience. no having to buy the same game every 5 years when a new "system" comes out. plus the sales so you get games cheaper.
@@bland9876 Is that not dependent on the PC? and ecosystem revolving around friends/Fam whoever playing on PC aswell as exclusives? no im not waiting a year or more to play ps5 exclusives. I have friends who game on PS5 and what you said doesn't fix the cramping problem that comes with playing a handheld..every handheld. this is not a PC vs PS5 convo, this is a what's the PS Portal got that the Steam deck etc don't. If you don't have hand cramping problems and primarily play on PC then easily the deck is the choice simple as that..
@@shownon there are PS5 exclusives? Are you sure your not thinking about Nintendo? As far as I. Aware they are the only one with exclusives anymore. The Deck is actually designed to not cramp your hand unlike the Switch infact most PC handhelds are designed not to cramp your hand. If your friend ar buying PS5s instead of steam Decks (no idea why they would) then you can still cross platform play with them. Fortnite being the most famous example. Ps Spider-Man and Uncharted run amazing on the Deck.
@@bland9876 No my point is i 98% of the time i play my games on PS5, I don't like playing on PC unless it's to emulate. Steam Deck no doubt is a phenomenal device but having tried it i can't go long with it withour cramping my hands albiet i can go AWHILE(friend let me borrow his for a couple days) on it but jumping from dual sense to the Steam deck is a big jump. Dual sense feels like home, having the 8 inch screen build in etc just makes this an instant buy for me, especially being an rpg/fighting game head.
It comes off as a rebellion against handhelds.. I can see what they’re going for a way to put 110% into one line and still have it portable too so they don’t have to split their resources.. It’s understandable.. Maybe it is the beginning of the wave of the future..

Another important thing is that Sony is also forcing you to buy their earplugs/ headphones because apparently, in your future, Bluetooth is not a good thing. I was wondering about that. Wanted to know from people who don't necessarily need a portal bc th3 tv is taken up. I wasn't interested bc I have a dedicated TV as well. But all the good word of mouth and th3 fact that I play my Nintendo switch predominantly HANDHELD has me possibly changing my mind and getting a portal. Most times I like to have my TV on what I'm watching as I'm playing my switch handheld too and I suppose I'd play my playstation 5 more if I had the portal that would allow me to do the same thing. All sold out now so I still have time to consider but I'm leaning more towards it now. Has it changed your gaming habits?
It works for me honestly. I have kids and it’s nice to be able to play my ps5 while they are watching what they want. I feel like this definitely wasn’t made for everyone.
portal doesn’t have a built in browser so if you are connecting to public networks with a sign in screen good luck. Most people are better off just doing remote play on their phones or getting a steam deck now that they are cheaper.
I went to my buddies house about an hour away. I connected to his wifi and the portal worked with no problem. I didn't even get a weak signal indication or anything. A big win for me💯
I went to the middle of the woods about 4 hours away. I did not connect to anything and the Steam Deck worked with no problems. I didn't even get a weak signal on my phone or anything. A big win for me💯 Surprisingly I'm not joking except for some reason my moms phone had a week signal so she could still text but it would take a few tries (it was random when it wanted to work) to send a message. dad sister and I had no signal. All Samsung phones of different types.
@@bland9876 did you check to see if the woods you were in had wifi? If not you gotta ask the animals for the wifi password to get it to work. No matter if your in the middle or outer sides of the woods. Then it should be working with no problem. But don't ask the bear. He's a jerk.
I’ve enjoyed my time with my portal so far. Like he’s mentioned a few moments here and there where the stream gets a bit fuzzy and frame drops or what not. It was one night I played 2K, MW3, and Madden back to back. Played until I got the low battery indicator. Always been a fan of remote play and have used the backbone controller with my phone to take advantage of remote play I’ve never been a fan of the having to remove my case to use the backbone(they’ve now fixed this). Depending on my schedule it’s just easier to handheld play my games. The portal isn’t for everyone and that’s cool but I’m glad Sony came out with a dedicated device. Hopefully they can build on this in the future.
Great review. I love it. We have one main tv and so this gives me a chance to game on PS5 while my wife is using the tv. I use the Spectrum wifi router and it works great. This cheaper than any other handheld gaming device, i.e. Switch, Steam Deck, etc. Also there is no need to buy games for the system since you are using your PS5 library of games and Playstation Plus.
I've been doing remote play on my phone for years. From my experience, remote play is best for any visual novels like Ace Attorney series or turn base RPG like FF7, 8, 9, or Persona 5. I don't have good wifi at home so I never bother to play action game on it. But I bet that screen is a huge upgrade from playing on my phone.
I would say depending on the phone because most phones now use OLED, so the pitcher and all might be better on your phone. Plus if it supports 120hz might make things better, for example playing fortnite at 120hz on a tv is very noticeable on how bad it looks. But on my Fold 5.... Well you don't notice those problems and it looks and runs really good (but that's on a Foldable phone).
This is actually very good! Yes, Remote Play has lag, but I genuinely don't see how else you can have a "portable PS5" unless the PS5 was made like the Switch, a handheld that happens to connect to an HDMI and that would hokd back the capacity of the console! So yeah, well done Sony! :),
It has lag should have been enough to not buy it. Tech isn't there yet to support proper streaming on the go. They could have done it like the Wii U where it has a direct connection. The Wii U had amazing streaming, it could't go very far, but maybe wut some receptors or better technology they could advance it. And at least you could walk to the other room with it. I don't think we should encourage overpriced bad products because they are ''good enough''
A lot of people were trashing on it before it came out, and I feel like those same people are defending this garbage and probably paid some scalper double the price for one.

There are several reasons why someone may want a portal instead of a steam deck. If all they’re looking for is a remote play device to specifically play PS5 games because that’s the only platform they use, there might not be much value in paying more for a SD.
I am loving the portal so far for the purpose of what i got it for, whenever the kids or wife use my living room tv i just hop on the portal and it has performed flawless for me. The remote play on the portal is significantly better than on a phone or other smart device, that shit sucks, the portal is almost a direct connection to your console in remote play.
Adding some kind of improved near-location casting, like WiiU, including an actual case, Bluetooh audio, better speakers, an OLED screen, letting it run some basic video streaming apps and the like, Sony could have done more to justify the cost, or even increase it. But even a positive review is a hard sell for what it does, and more importantly doesn’t, do.

The Playstation Portal would be awesome, if it was released back in late 90s or early 2000. Since technology in that time frame was not multi-purpose use and just one dedicated device Printing, scanning, faxing and photocopying were all separate products in 80s and 90s. Now they all in one products with wireless connect technology capabilities. Don't get wrong Playstation portal doesn't need to be all-one product, but could had use some more innovation. No internet required to play inside the home (connect wifi6). 2)Micro SD card expansion for retro gaming download service of top 25, PSP ,PS1,and PS2 (offline play). 3) A Real Offline portable device and with some features that work without needing internet to function.
Awesome video man! I figured out that you can use TH-cam and even sign in on your Portal, but it has to be through your PS5's browser. Unfortunately though, you can't watch videos in full screen and it will be maxed out at 1080p (obviously). It's still cool that it works at least.

I love my portal. Have been giving me the opportunity to continue to play my system when not in my room or home. I have not had any real issue. Sony gains nothing by making a stand alone handheld, in fact they lose. All it will do was take away ps5 potential customers. It will bring out the same games for both systems which just becomes more work and not that much of a gain. That’s why Nintendo did what they did by making their home entertainment system also portal. To not lose customers one way or the other.
This is honestly a good take. I really didn’t think about this. I love my portal but if they can focus on a better connection and in the future an OLED version it will be the best thing.
1 reason Sony prolly isn't doing a full blown handheld is cuz it'd be like $400 and would go head2head against the Switch2, it's an uphill battle against the Switch2
I might be an outlier here but while I think it’s a good device that does what it’s supposed to. Given the parameters for it I just kind of don’t feel it’s worth $200. I think it’s good for what it is though

When the Pulse Elite and Explorer were announced with the portal. I thought the PlayStation portal was Sony's new stupid idea and I didn't consider it after a while seeing sky high prices on eBay. There's valid reasons to dislike it, you can't just label it as getting hate when Sony gave people said reasons to not like it. Certain facilities need you access a browser to use WiFi so it can't be used there. Hotspots arent that reliable, they won't stream it well for a considerable amount of time.
Just get a Steam Deck then you don't have to worry about your wife at home and can play whatever you want.
Hopefully, the Portal evolves into a stand-alone dedicated device for all things Playstation.

Adding some kind of improved near-location casting, like WiiU, including an actual case, Bluetooh audio, better speakers, an OLED screen, letting it run some basic video streaming apps and the like, Sony could have done more to justify the cost, or even increase it. So you can use it on any personal wifi or hotspot outside of your home as long as it isn’t a free/public wifi source that requires a browser to authenticate access, in that case you will be unable to use it.
@@usnightm4re I assumed he did some fiddling with his network somehow, but maybe I missed something. I’ve heard otherwise from early reviews though. If can actually play it while accessing Wi-Fi from other places, there’s also the issue of latency depending on the quality of the network you’re accessing. I’ve had so-so experiences playing God of War Using remote play during lunch break. It’s not ideal for fast paced games as the tech isn’t quite there yet. But if you’re confident that you’ll get good image quality at home or somewhere else and you’ve got the cash to spend, I guess yeah, go for it.
Well said bro great content
I got my portal last night and I absolutely love it its so dope I am so happy with it😊❤
I find the dualsense to be the most uncomfortable controller ever. So this thing would be hell for hands.
Yea ❤ my portal too... I know I could do it before but it's just so much easier
Some Maths, on the MK1 footage shown here (around 11:00) i counted on 2 occasions 6 frames between the moment you pressed square and Scorpion action. Given this is a 30fps video, that gives you 200ms latency .... i'm sorry but this cannot be called playable for any fighting game.
At first I wasn't thinking about getting a Playstation Portal. But I really want to now!
The lack of a carry case/charging dock and the lack of media app playback is definitely a non seller for me. I’ve been holding back on buying PS5 however. There have been no PS5 exclusives that have interested me and my PS4 is still chuggin. I have an OG white PS4 and I personally think it’s a superior looking console.
Lol

@@crispcoffee7958 if you aren't interested in ps5 exclusicrs now I feel like you won't ever be. There's some great games out
The PlayStation Portal is a huge hit. Despite what the heaters were hoping for 😂it's already sold out in America, Asia. And Europe,
This shows people are really into it. Want the ability to play their games.
Outside of the couch.
😊Happy for Sony
Has anyone been playing this without a wired connection to your ps5? I’m wondering about the performance because I have good wifi and I’m unable to wire my ps5
