I use remote play a decent amount to access my PS5. It's amazing how much worse the experience is on Sony's own proprietary hardware.

I see a lot of people who compared the Portal to the Wii U gamepad, but the Wii U had a dedicated wireless network between the console and gamepad. This is a good point to think about. This older technology provided latency up to 100ms LESS than what would be seen out of your tv. Meanwhile the Portal has latency between 60-100ms MORE than what is being displayed on the tv the ps5 is connected to.

Those WiFi mesh systems tend to suck in my experience, much lower bandwidth, especially if you aren’t using Ethernet as the backend to connect each and every one of them, but even then they still tend to add a bunch of ping and jitter.
I always recommend people just get a giant powerful wireless router with a ton of real external antennas on them and aim them properly. On my property I can pull full bandwidth in any room or outside, whereas when I tried the Asus WiFi mesh system my bandwidth halved and ping grew by 20% or so best case scenario.
That time for your packets to hop across air and be processed and sent twice really adds up.

17:09 That's actually extremely common for Sony. The PSP and the PSVita both used proprietary memory cards for storage expansion. You couldn't just go down to your local tech store and pick up a SanDisk SD Card, it had to be a Sony SD Card. Gets even better, Sony SD Cards would not work with anything other than a PSP or Vita(I assume to prevent people from plugging them into their PC and side loading things onto the PSP or Vita). The fact that the PS5 DualSense works natively out of the box with IOS being MFI Certified blew my mind due to Sony's history about locking their stuff down so hard. Both their PSP and Vita also used proprietary disks, meaning that they could not be read by anything other than the system they were intended for. They also tried to sue two emulator manufacturers once it was known you could play PlayStation games on a PC from the actual disks, because that was supposed to be proprietary as well. The PS3 was also chocked full of proprietary-ness. The PS4 DualShock 4 in the beginning was also locked down to the PS4 and required some creative workarounds to connect it to a PC and get most of it's basic functions to work. Even now a PS4 DualShock 4 doesn't connect very well to PCs. PS4 and PS5, last I checked, also still won't accept XBox branded controllers as a viable control method, wired or wireless. And if/when they do, it's a severely degraded setup. Third party controllers have a better time connecting, but it's still going to be a lesser experience. Sony has always been about that "If you are on a PlayStation, then you will ONLY use our stuff". And this wouldn't be so bad except that with proprietary, comes a price hike. Sony LOVES to jack up the price on their proprietary equipment to double, sometimes even triple(or more) the price of the equivalent non-Sony branded tech. Want to use wireless earbuds for your gaming? No no no, don't get those $20usd earbuds you saw on Amazon, buy our $200usd earbuds.
I stand buy a statement I made on the PS Portal a while back: It's a downgraded PSP/Vita. Both of those could connect to the PS3 and stream games from the console(It was an earlier time and modems were a lot worse back then, so the quality is forgivable), but they also had their own library of games that could be played without the console. And they could be taken out of the house and away from the WIFI, and still play games. This, they took the idea of locked down to the next level by locking it down to your house. This was intended for people with giant five bedroom houses and a WIFI signal that covers their entire five acre property. So they can sit next to their pool and play some Spider-Man. The average user, unless they are extremely lazy(which is very likely), can just buy a spare HDMI and power cable for each of their rooms that have a television and set it up so all they have to do is move the console. It's not like the thing weighs as much as a Volkswagen. And it would be hundreds cheaper than getting a PS Portal just to play while laying in bed. Though it would not surprise me to learn that a future PS5 firmware update requires you to register your HDMI cable, and then locked the console to ONLY that cable. And it has to be a Sony branded cable. With special connectors that only a Sony branded television will have. The $3,000usd PS5 television that is built to look like the PS5.
I'm pretty sure that you won't read this as it's long, and the video is about 5-6 hours old. But this video has earned you some respect from me. You were provided a product for review, and unlike others who will tow the line to get that cash payout, you did not mince words, or only show the good things to try and dupe others into getting it. And that is something I can respect.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I get that Sony is a hardware company first and foremost, but the amount of closed ecosystem BS is getting ridiculously anti-consumer. $200 for a screen attached to a controller and WiFi connector? $200 for PS-specific headphones which the devices will force you to use by not allowing Bluetooth, the standard everyone has? Playstation has become for the Payers.

At least if you get the items together for a psvita or a psp you can still do fun stuff with them even now. Hearing in the review that you need to use a app to pair this to the PS5 just spells out how much of a paperweight this will be in the future. They could have made it work from the ps5 direct to the system so it will work in 5-10- 15 years down the road. But no, Sony have made it extremely clear from the driveless system and the disc drive upgrade needing online activation, that they do not care about how what you buy will work in the future.

Small correction: The PSP memory stick duos were actually not exclusive to the PSP, it was a proprietary format SONY was trying to push at the time. If you bought a camera from them at the time for example, it would use those as well, and their laptops also had a reader for the format. I remember this because we used to own a lot of SONY products at the time!

Just one more reason why Nintendo continues to win in the portable department. The sleep mode feature on the switch functions like that of a smartphone, and you never have to worry about the switch turning itself off for no good reason except the battery is completely dead.
And though I don't think the OG switch is all that pocketable, it is much more pocketable than something like the PS Portal, or the steam deck.
I also think Nintendo was right to make a smaller version of the switch.

The Vita at least supported ad hoc WiFi from what I recall. So if you were in the general vicinity of your PS4, it worked pretty well. The only real issue was the lack of physical trigger and stick buttons. The Portal feels like a half-arsed measure to cash in on the portable craze. Thing is Sony could have made a Steam Deck like system that could play PS4 and PS5 titles locally. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme can deliver a Series S/PS4 Pro level of performance. That probably would have been a big win.

*I said stream because you'd never get a handheld as powerful as a PS5 before 2026 at earliest, 2030 at best. People already complain that the PS4 is "holding back" PS5, imagine all the whining if PS5 games have to be downgraded to be able to run on a handheld device.

An 802.11ax router will have a much stronger signal than anything the PS5 would be capable of, and you have most likely placed your router in a better location for wide coverage. People complaining about local WiFi being an issue have simply never properly configured their WiFi.

I have my PS5 hardwired to ethernet and my dual band router was only about 80 bucks from Walmart so I probably have a way worse router than you would have. Also I played about an hour and a half of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty on it last night and it ran perfect with no lag, artifacting or audio issues at all. I also got a 3.5mm to bluetooth adapter and it works good for bluetooth audio. Even using that there was still no audio lag or issues. Also based on your PS5 issues you might need a new PS5, it seems defective if it turns off by itself and your remote play needs to be reset all the time. That's not normal.

Now I am having a VERY different experience with the PlayStation Portal. Not all good, so calm down.
It does not have any of the issues in terms of quality of connection,
dropped frame or sound… however it does just bug out every so often. It feeezes, have to turn the screen off and on again to be told the connection dropped, and it won’t reconnect at all until I finally to a system restart.
But even with that it is better for me that my phone.
1- my phone is usually low on battery by the time I am able to play
2- I get interrupted with calls or texts all the time
3- mixing podcast/video listening while playing is a pain if on same device.
So overall, $200 is a lot, and few people should buy this but for me it helps justify the $500 investment collecting dust otherwise, not counting the investment in the actual games. Maybe I can hope my backlog issue will at least not continue to get worse.

So baffling...
And the worst thing is, they're doing this when portable PC/Consoles hybrids like Steam decks and stuff are becoming more and more a thing, and when portable emulation machines are the hot new toys. In what world didn't they see this thing becoming a laughing stock of the industry?
And more than 200€ for that?! Wtf?

Honestly after this release I honestly feel like PlayStation should give up on the portable seen. They failed on the remote play app, never released a cloud gaming service and then when they tried to make a portable their design philosophy was immediately flawed and poorly executed. Hell idk who the smooth brain was who thought… hey yknow that remote play service we make that doesn’t work?… well what if we took that and stuck it in a tablet without fixing the program. Idk if this is the case for you, but when I first got my PS5 I had issues with it randomly shutting off, and through a little bit of testing I figured out it was because of power consumption being plugged to a full power strip. I think it takes up a lot of juice and when it can't have the focus for power, it shuts off. I tried plugging it into power strips with only 2 other devices and directly into the wall and now I have no issue with it shutting off randomly. Also for the microphone, there's a setting in the system settings that reverses the microphone feature to do exactly what you said. It starts muted by default, and you habe to turn it on to use it. Why that wasn't the default is still poor design on their part, but it can be remedied.

I have been playing remote play on my steam deck through chiaki and to a lesser extent on my phone in the past and played gran turismo 7 for multiple hours, over 1.5 hours away from home with both the deck and ps5 at home only connected to wifi and had a great experience with 0 lag or dropped frames. If you have a Sony TV, turning on Simple IP Control in the Network Settings of the TV will resolve issues just as well without the need to unplug the HDMI cable.
Honestly, the Playstation Portal does exactly what it's advertised to do, and how well it works really is up to the user's network setup. That's why reviews and reception are all over the place with this thing - it all depends on your network and not the device itself. Easy to test though by just using remote play on any other device before buying it though.

    • @Brolylover007
      @Brolylover007 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@@jamespalmer421 The reason you need to unplug the HDMI cable is to completely eliminate the need for the PS5 to process the video output to the TV. This allows the console to solely focus on remote play and it doesn't need any additional processing for outputting to the TV. This might sound like a small tweak but I have heard many people reporting a massive difference in the overall connection quality when doing remote play. Trust me. The hilarious part of them choosing to make the Portal and PS5 rely on your home's internet connection is that Nintendo already made bullet-proof in home streaming with the Wii U and the Wii U GamePad without needing a router because the Wii U transmits its own 5GHz Wi-Fi signal directly to the GamePad without using any external internet connectivity. Furthermore, the Wii U in its day could run Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Video on the GamePad while all those services are disabled when streaming from a PlayStation console to any Remote Play device, including the Portal.
I feel like Sony made the Portal out of spite to discredit dedicated handhelds like the Switch, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion, and other dedicated handhelds instead of meaningfully participating in the market. If/when the portal fails, Sony will use the same excuse they previously made with the Vita that "handheld gaming isn't popular"; but the catch this time is that, unlike the Vita, the Portal is a bad product. People *do* want portable gaming, they just don't want *bad* portable machines

  • @xpacerx

Looking at your footage it looks like that device doesn't work that well for you. I've had the complete opposite experience I do not see any frame skips or stutters when I'm at home, wifi 526Mbps(down)/304Mbps(up). It's a solid crystal clear connection from any point in my house. Sitting on the shitter playing GT7, Warframe, Battlefield, and Remnant 2 like I was sitting at my TV. The only issue I did have while at home was the remote play just lost connection to the PS5 for no reason but I just reconnected and kept playing.
I did get a chance to play it from 300 miles away on my parents wifi 253Mbps(down)/27Mbps(up). From there the Portal would run into a momentary lag spike frames skipping and artifacting for at most 10 sec then it would resolve. I played Warframe for about 30 min and Remnant 2, with psn party chat, for over two hours. It was completely playable the whole time. I will admit no Bluetooth is stupid so I had to use an old pair of earbuds to connect to the 3.5mm jack and the mic used for chat was on the Portal.
This device is a win for me but as you can see mileage may vary for others. This device doesn't rely on internet speed while in home but it does rely on network speed so I would suggest hard wiring the PS5 to an ethernet cable, giving your console a static IP, and forwarding these ports TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP 3478, 3479.

I think the big issue with official remote play, is the app itself. I tried an app called PSPlay instead, it costs around £5, but I gave it a go and it is a far superior to the official app. Colours pop more, lag and latency is less noticable, and I think the resolution is even a little better. It does drop out on occasion, but no where near as much as the official Playstation app. Might be worth a try, obviously not with the Portal, but with the backbone it might be worth a go.

Or that they would do something with the hardware that improved streaming to it better than anything else and at least have bluetooth. There had to be some aspect I was missing to make this viable.
But they really just cut a dualshock in half and slapped a tablet between it and it can only use a service that 3rd party devs have made better apps for on other systems.
Not even that really bc tablets have native functionality, this can't even run android or Linux, have basic bluetooth functionality, and many use Wifi6. Basically every other option is better than this.

The Steam Deck can also play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games via emulation. So it can become more of a Playstation machine that what Sony can offer itself.

If you have that much money why on earth would you get a Portal over a Steamdeck?....
Its just a worse device in nearly every way, I don't understand the logic aside from some weird fanboyism to the brand.

@@Giliver The Steam Deck is 800p(720p), will get black bars, the streaming quality is not as good as the portal, no haptic feedback and adaptive triggers like the Portal while streaming, way smaller display, and if someone with a ps5 gets a Steam Deck they will have to buy the games all over again if they don't want to stream.

The two bgm tracks that play during the intro segment are _Save & Load_ and _Shou Akasaki_ from Racing Lagoon btw
    It's a PS1 Japan-only racing rpg by Squaresoft

My saviour! I've literally been searching for this comment for like the last 10 mins! When I heard that music, it immediately took me back to when I lived in Japan back in 2009, so it would make sense that it's Racing Lagoon as which you stated, is a Japanese only title. I knew that I heard that music somewhere. I was gonna go insane if I didn't find out what it was 😂 Thanks so much!

My experience has been mostly positive, though I do notice some tiny stuttering not present on other PS remote play options, hopefully that's something that can be addressed.
For me this will mostly serve me when my partner would like to use the TV in the living room or I'd like to play in bed.
I do think the screen is great and the ergonomics are pretty good.
I don't fault anybody being down on this thing though, the experience should be the best possible remote play experience out there, and it's not.

i mean, i could see the appeal if they just wanted to make their version of the wiiu tablet. That was honestly a fun way to play that console while sharing the livingroom and tv with my roommates, but this implememtation is way too reliant on home wifi which can be all over the place.

I haven’t had an issue with the Portal, in fact I have a better experience with remote play than I ever did on my iPhone XS with backbone. I respect the honesty, but it really depends on your home network on how well this performs.

I've had nothing but a great experience with this. I remote play my steam deck with my series x and love it and this is by far the greatest way to remote play my ps5. I am a dad who rarely has access to my tv so maybe I'm biased. The first time I killed the battery it did chug but haven't had any issues since. I guess it's definitely a case by case basis

Try chiaki4deck on your steam deck. I used it to stream the entirety of Spiderman 2 and it was fantastic the entire time. A flickering gray frame maybe once every 45 minutes, but besides for that it was incredible

I think all of us who know what this is for and are enjoying it without issues need to just let the haters blow off steam for a while until they realise the issues are not with the Portal , but with their shitty home network setup.

Try and turn off the Mesh option of your wifi with just the PlayStation portal. If mesh is turned on for a device it tries to smart switch constantly which makes it worse.
Most mesh networks have the option to turn that part of for a single device.
