- Welcome to part two of the repair series on a very rusty 1967 Gmc van. In this video I will be demonstrating a technique called hammer welding, which is used to keep metal straight as you are welding it. We will also show a method of shrinking metal using a Unispotter. Then I'll show a simple way of replicating inner structure and bracing.

Oooooh! New techniques! I had earlier requested a pointer to an example of the 'torch shrink' method, and here he covers it, plus the mini version using the special spot welder, plus spot pulling, plus hammer stretching of hot metal -- a bonanza of new techniques, some of which I had not seen before. However, as we have come to expect, there is clickbait -- he keeps promising us a ruined panel, without ever delivering. That's OK. We have all caught on. :)

Being raised in Southern California the only real rusty cars I saw came from back east. Your videos show that the average guy with your instruction and basic body working tools can fix something that's pretty rusty. Today I see people are saving old cars that surely would have been scrapped when I was young. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing! I only had a gas torch when I was young so welding in panels, hammer and dolly was how I got it done and lead was my best friend lol.

i love this channel, i have been learning a lot watching this guy, he 100% original, he don't copy other guys doing mostly the same with expensive tools and expensive sponsors, he teach us how DIY with basic tools and principles and also i enjoy the sense of humor . 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you for showing me your hammer welding technique. I used it on a Lancia Flaminia door repair and it worked very well. I replaced the lower 7 inches of the outer panel and butt welded the join using your hammer welding technique and the owner of the door was so happy with the result he paid me extra for the job. thanks once again.

Nice cat!.
The round corners are for stress relief, it helps to stop a fracture forming right at the pointy end.
Its used in big ships fixes. I dont think the side of the van will be facing much savage wave-wind action.

After watching your techniques I was able to salvage a bad rear fender for my '36 Chevy truck. These may be basic techniques but most videos don't show the basics so what you are showing is much more important to us than the more advanced techniques. Keep it up!

Coming along nice, repairing rust can get a little old, but it's still just as satisfying in the end, one of my hates was removing those 70's after market Sunroofs and repairing the hole, it was one of those things where you do one, and next minute you have everyone wanting there's done, they say word of mouth is the best advertising, but it can be a pain in the ass as well lol...

I'm still catching up on your past segments. Again, lots of learning for me to do yet, but I'm understanding the basics a lot better now. As for that van, it must be a labor of love or a family heriloom, that is too much rust even for here in Ontario (Canada's rust belt). I think you would have to pay (large) the wrecking yard to take it. lol
Good video. I don't have a TIG but i'm going to try hammer welding using my cobra torch. Good fabrication and I like the humor. I still think about the video where you restored your coat.

You can sometimes find the name brand ones for sale used for cheap. I paid 200 for mine and it looked brand new and came with 2 boxes of studs.

Pretty decent fabrication tips. This is the type of repairs people like to see. Most people would love to save old hot rods and classics but can't afford the thousands of dollars just for the replacement sheet metal repair panels. I think more videos like this would put your TH-cam channel at the top of the list. Keep the cool stuff coming 😎

I really like that old Chevy van but its rusty condition scares me away but where you come in from makes that van look very savable!!! Your old fashioned body working skills are a lost art and you are a savior to that! I'm glad I found your channel and I look forward of you bringing in really dilapidated classics and give them a new life with your metal working body skills with what you call your "garbage arms"!!! lol!!!😂 My father was a gifted certified auto and truck mechanic for 45 yrs and he was a self taught body Man as well. He would do body work on cars in his own garage in the 70s. We didn't have a uni-spotter and so my father like you said used a torch to flatten the outward dimples on a body panel.You and my dad do old fashioned body art which is a lost art, old fashioned is the best! Keep up on your great channel and I look forward to more of your metal working art on classic relics you bring into your garage

I was raised on a farm and even though I haven't lived in that setting for many decades I consider myself to be pretty handy. I can fix a lot of stuff. But reshaping/repairing dented sheet metal is something I A) don't understand and B) screw up every time I try it. So watching your deft touch is that much more fascinating for me to watch. @Carter Auto Restyling - Two reasons why some people like this build so much is, it reminds us of trying to fix our first money pit project while learning what not to do and what to do to fix it right versus fix it cheaply, and the other reason is, you can't make it any worse than it already is.
It would be a challenge to make it worse than it is haha
First time I did auto body it really messed me up. I was hooked on Austin Minis ( the old ones) for a decade. After therapy and treatment I’m still hooked on rust.
Back to basics is why we watch...I like this project...another great content video...keep em commin...

I think that the little nub in the middle of the heated spot could reasonably be called an umbo. A big nub would be a jumbo umbo. it's also good to see that you're a pragmatist and not a picky perfectionist, evidenced by the way you fabbed the brackets. Top hole!
