- In this video I am welding a steel roof insert in a 1932 Chevy coupe. This video outlines the procedure of how I go about tackling a job like this. The process can be applied to any make of 1920s or 1930s coupes and sedans that originally had an open fabric roof. As with anything there are many different methods of filling the roof, this is just the way I do it, it works well for me, doesn't require any specialty tools beyond what the average hobbyist already owns, and needs minimal bodywork when completed. An old body man once told me "spend your time straightening the metal and you won't have to spend your time sanding the filler. The straighter the metal, the better and faster it'll finish up." Don't worry about spending the time straightening the metal out. It'll last longer than the putty will.

Hope the owner doesn't decide to chop the top after all of that beautiful, time consuming metal work! Watching you reminds me of the metal crafters that taught me over 50 years ago. Wish we had tig welders then! Doing the roof fill with oxy/acetylene would have been a nightmare! You are a true craftsman!

Kyle - amazing work. Incredible that you basically just eyeballed a completey different car from a different era and knew at a glance it would be such a great "transplant". Your mention of low crown reminds me people like me with 60s and 70s cars would love you to share your knowledge of working with those long, flat, wide hoods, decks, quarters, etc.

In the time lapse on the welding segments starting around the 14 minute mark, you can actually see the metal rise and then shrink as it cooled immediately after the weld! Something to point out to viewers in the future. I’ve never seen that before in any videos anywhere. The camera angle must have been just right.

Really interesting! Using the time lapse function really exposes the movement of the metal after you weld it. From about 13:35 to about 14:20 in the video you really see how the metal shrinks back down while it cools. Very cool to see! Good work man! I’m learning while watching. Eh! 🤘🏼👍🏼

I have watched many videos from others that show this process but thanks to the time lapse this is the first time I have actually been able to see the metal rise up and then shrink back down as it cools from the heat. Good photography.

At 14:05 I wonder if anyone noticed the metal movement after each weld. The heat and cool , oh just started reading the guys comment right in front of me. Too funny.
