- Someone pooped in my parents' hotel room shower, and they got hit with a cleaning fee after they checked out! But who did the dirty deed, and why? I unravel this stinky mystery and confront their hotel in Budapest, Hungary, about this outrageous scam.
Be careful when you travel in Europe; scammers are also on the streets, especially in Budapest!

*Update 1:* After contacting Accor's CEO and directors, the hotel's general manager replied and refunded the €51 cleaning fee.

I would have done the same as you had. You are a gentleman. Unfortunately, some people consider being a gentleman a sign of weakness. Those that make such misjudgements are themselves weak of character, and lacking brain matter.
Hotel managers usually reside in the hotel, and are available during business hours.
Having had experience in the Hotel business, yes, this was a retaliation for the reviews that your parents left.

they do it all the time, happened to my mom who is 70 years old and they claimed she was smoking in the room, and she’s never smoked or drank or done any drugs her whole life.. charged her a $200 fee for that - also, i’m a huge fan btw 👍

Last month almost the same thing happened to me in Thailand but mine was about the hair dryer . Upon checking out they told me the hair dryer was missing in the room that I have to pay $80 which we didn’t even knew there was hair dryer inside the room . I didn’t pay them anything I said I will report to the police and they just apologise for misunderstanding. I think a lot of hotel staff or cleaner use this method to scam for their own benefit.

I just had 7 week email battle with Hertz and their debt collecting company charging me £462 for slight scratch on an alloy wheel. I managed to get them off of my back, they even forged invoice for changing the wheel. Wrong time and date. Unbelievable

I can imagine young folks being inebriated behaving in a manner unbecoming of themselves but to accuse parents and an older generation is just nuts. And yes, it's possible to extract and sequence that DNA! Unfortunately, there's another issue. Our poo is teaming with DNA, but most of it doesn't come from us; it comes from that 30% by weight of dead bacteria. The vast, vast majority of DNA in our poop (greater than 99%) is bacterial, rather than mammalian.

The cleaning staff certainly has some first class toilet humor.
I booked Hayatt in London. They gave me a disabled room (I did not request it) I'm 6 feet 2 inches in height and wash basin in toilet was at my knee height. There was no barrier between room and toilet. As a result room carpet had water stains on it. When I entered the room! Someone else's name was on the screen. Clearly they gave me someone else's room. I made video of the room when I entered. After checkout i was told that I must pay 400 pounds cleaning charge. Luckily I was still in London. Showed them video of the room with time stamp. Not only got refund for my one night stay but also for 5 night stay voucher. You have to fight with them.
I bet it was Hyatt BlackFriars. Recently stayed there for a week, at check out they came up with room charges and other random stuff that I didn’t order plus extra fees per night. They think people won’t take the time to fight back these none sense charges. Bill went down to original booking rate. Girl at front desk was pissed.

Sounds like that Hotel needs new management . And a new cleaning staff. Yes they saw stains on the mattress which makes me worry about the stains and dirt that you can't see with the naked eye.

What you call nervousness might will be lack of fluency in English. This is in Hungary remember.
Its infuriating at many levels, not only did they sneakily charge you for a cleaning fee knowing that you are a tourist and cant possibly see the complaint through if there was one, but also for using the most disgusting reason for charging that extra fee.

Every time we check in and out of a hotel, we take a video as proof that everything is left the same way. So upsetting that they had to deal with this.

Watching this, I was actually impressed that the conversation remained so dignified; Karl remained calm and diplomatic throughout and the receptionist was extremely polite and empathetic also. He may have slipped when he said about the “harsh accusation” but he really was put on the spot and (I believe) completely shafted by his cleaning staff. Had he known what was going on I doubt he would have made such an effort to help Karl and made so many phone calls. I’m glad this got resolved and that you got the refund. This young man on reception, who was completely thrown in at the deep end, is probably the only saving grace the hotel has throughout this whole disgusting episode!
I snapped when the guy said that Karl was making a "harsh accusation" , and pooping in the shower isn't ! Karl showed a lot of restraint , the other guy not so much , but Karl defused the situation when it should've gone to the next level .

Actually I was impressed with the receptionist’s professionalism, considering his limited authority as a staff member with no decision making power. He did his best to address the situation within his capabilities.

The whole thing was ridiculous and the fact that the hotel then tried to get the bad review removed is the icing on the cake , that was their priority . The scam was like a chain , each person involved was a link in that chain , from the cleaner , to the assistant manager , to the receptionist who was the mouthpiece of the scam .
The whole time he was basically saying it's Karl's word against theirs and acting like what Karl was saying was crazy , but what the hotel was accusing was perfectly fine .

You will never guess what some guests are doing...my girlfriend is a hotel manager and she has seen it all...and she works in a 5 star hotel. People who poo and piss in the hall way, adults who poo on the bed, who spit in the room, etc. you are underestimating how dumb and uncivilized some people are.

@@grbadalamenti In effect, the hotel management accused KR's parents of fouling the bathroom. They had no proof of this but went ahead and charged them for the supposed clean up costs. They later refunded that money, something they would not have done had they been able to prove their case. That they did this might also be seen as implicit recognition that the cleaning staff had not been honest in their claims.

This is what credit cards and chargebacks are for, I hope your parents can contest the charge via their bank
You can contest the charge with any bank if it's a debit card ( it is YOUR money, not their). Just file a police report for being scammed and then take the report to the bank and ask for the money back.
I’m sure the hotel will then show the document you signed at checkin stating you will be responsible for any extra cleaning costs, not as easy as you think

I've stayed in very posh hotels. Have a peek at the mattress without the sheet. Their often heavily stained with god knows what. Proper racid. People rarely check. Mattresses are like a sponge soaking everything up.

I always take pictures when I leave, hotel or vacation house rental. Sometimes, I'll take a video to show I'm leaving. Also, I don't complain while I'm staying somewhere unless it's something they can fix... no one is going to replace a mattress during your stay unless you want to be changed to a different room. When getting into a hotel room, check it out thoroughly first, then within the 1st 30 minutes, maybe you can ask for a different room. But complaining during your stay often does nothing. There's another scam out there where people rent houses and then complain to get partial refunds on their stays. So also this goes both ways, unfortunately.
oh man, Hungary is a paradise of scammers. You should stay longer and will have a lot of content. The souvenir shops are ridiculous. My sister went in one of those shops and 2 girls behind her intentionally dropped a souvenir and they started to act like my sister did it. Then, when she wanted to pay, the cashier was charging triple price without explaining nothing, my sister asked why and the cashier said it was because she dropped the souvenir on the floor. Then my sister told him, well, charge me only for the souvenir broken, I wont buy anything from you. She left with a bitter memory of Budapest.

If they took the charge first and then notified you, you should report it to your bank and unauthorized transaction. They will block or reverse the transfer, and the hotel can get a lot of shit from it.
Thanks Karl for the heads up. This video came right on time for me. I am flying to Europe (from NZ) in a few weeks, arriving in BUD, and was looking for a hotel room for a night. After watching this, Novotel Budapest Centrum is off the list.

Good thing you're standing up for your folks and confronting this dispicable situation. The hotel staff should go into the room and see if all's good and then tell the guest(s) checking out it's ok or Houston we have a problem. Shame on them!

If the toilet is not clean, its the the responsibility of house keeping staff to clean it and not to complain and levy a fine on it. Its common hotel scam

NO it is very common in Europe, a typical vendor in Hungary will happily charge tourist 2x-3x amount if they think they can get away with it.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out how the cleaning staff obtained the 💩. Did they fish it out of an unflushed toilet, or did one of them step inside the shower & popped a squat?
I would be pissed if someone tried to shame my parents like this. You definitely have a cooler head than I, which, in the end, is always better. The logic behind their stunt is ridiculous. If someone is concerned enough with cleanliness to check their mattress for stains(which appeared to be bl00d)... they definitely are not the type to take a 💩 in the shower.

So, I'll say this as someone who is working and has worked in the front of the house for 12 years: Thank you for complaining in an orderly fashion and treating the employee with respect. That makes all the difference when taking a complaint and I think he did a great job!
I've never heard of such a scam, but if it's really a reoccurring thing that they accuse multiple customers of, it's absolutely horrific.
Lastly, note that you won't find a single spotless mattress in any hotel in the world. Hundreds of people sleep in the same bed every year and mattresses are changed (maybe every 5 years). Please don't rip the sheets of the beds and complain about this to the front desk staff. As long as the top mattress and sheet is clean, then you're gonna be fine. Otherwise don't sleep in hotels.

I feel bad for the receptionist, he has no idea how he's supposed to deal with this conflicting information and is so nervous and uncomfortable.
He probably thinks it is likely that the cleaners DID make it up but can't just go out on a limb and there's no way to prove the truth in either direction. His colleagues have made a direct claim and provided "evidence", as if he can just be like "yeah the cleaners are liars and the hotel just scammed you, let me get that refund for you."
he does… they usually ran these kind of thing in a group…from the bellboy up to the hotel manager…

He was dismissive about the whole issue . I'm sure that he could do something about it , he knows who was probably responsible for it . They just thought that they could get away with it and now he was hoping that by sending Karl away , he would drop it and give in . If someone makes accusations about the cleaning staff where I work they are immediately questioned about it and a report is taken , accusations are taken very seriously . I saw none of that concern here with this receptionist .

I'm an American, and I can already tell you that this would not stand here in the US. I'm shocked that they haven't been sued into oblivion yet! That is just a lawsuit waiting to happen, and I'm utterly shocked that this is even going on in Europe. Quite honestly, you should file a lawsuit. It's absolutely insane that they're accusing your elderly parents of taking a dump in their shower. Not only is it nonsensical beyond belief that they have the audacity to try to get away with this, but it's also embarrassing for their customers. You should also write a review online and post it for everyone to see, including the picture they showed you. That is just outrageous! How dare they? You should definitely file a lawsuit!
This means one of the cleaners took a shit, scooped it out the toilet and put it in the shower 🤢 That's the sort of people cleaning rooms for this hotel🤮
