I shoot with a gh5 mark ii. Eagerly awaiting a new micro 4/3rds camera with improved autofocus and slightly better low light. S5 mark ii is tempting, but as a traveller I just love the compact size of micro 4/3 lenses
I just finished using my S5 IIX for a wedding. I have to say that the autofocus blew me away. Even during the reception. Shooting in low light with the only lights pulsing on hue loops, I thought I'd have issues. Yet, I was able to shoot wide open at f 1.8 and accurately lock onto subjects I wanted 98% of the time. My only two issues of hunting came when I was moving quickly to the left and the camera lost the subject for a second. The second came when shooting someone who was standing in front of a bright , pulsing light. Overall,I was blown away by how versatile this thing is. Nothing like shootng in 4K prores raw with strong ibis and AF, then switching to open gate on the fly for instagram material. Kind of crazy that people consider this an "entry level"camera in 2023. I wonder where mirrorless will be in 3-4 years.
@ghpod I think the auto focus is superb. I think you need to dig deeper into the af software because it has multiple settings for different situations. Definitely figure out how in depth in can get.
Sold my Sony A7 IV for the Lumix s5 iix. I'm so happy with it! the ibis makes my workflow do much easier. AF seemed the same to me. There were moments when I use subject tracking on the A7 IV and if someone walks Infront of the camera, it would lose focus completely and would just AF on the nearest subject even when I had human priority on the a7 IV. I find the human tracking on the S5 iix so accurate!
I have been shooting music videos and short movies for about 10 years. Recently, I made the decision to sell my Canon R5 and switch to the Lumix S5II X. I am extremely happy with this switch as the Lumix offers several advantages. Firstly, the lenses are more affordable and lighter in weight. Additionally, the image stabilization is amazing and the camera supports 6K open gate shooting. The Anamorphic feature is also a great addition. I am particularly impressed with the v-log feature, which produces stunning results. After using the Lumix, I don't think I will ever go back to shooting on Canon Log 3. The only area where I find Canon to be superior in terms of video is its responsiveness. There is a slight delay when I hit the play button before the playback starts.
Just came across this video in my recommendations, and I’m not sure if you still make this podcast so maybe no one ever sees this comment, but it’s been interesting to watch this as an S5IIx owner and see all the issues mentioned that have since been fixed by Panasonic with firmware updates. It’s impressive to see how much they’ve listened to the community and fixed in such a short amount of time. I’d go out on a limb and say that Panasonic has leap frogged ahead of all the other brands in terms of post-purchase firmware support, which is a major turnaround for them considering they were charging money for firmware updates not too long ago.
I saw your comment and I’m trying to get my first mirror less but I’m thorn between choosing the s5IIx and the Nikon z7II. I’m drawn more towards the Lumix but so many complaints online have left me in a dilemma. Hopefully comments like yours would encourage me to get this camera
@@thepurplejedi Rent them both! I rented 5 cameras before I finally decided. $2k for the body plus buying into a lens ecosystem is a huge purchase decision, so spending $500 on rentals beforehand makes sense.
Great podcast. I've used the S5ii for two months now and second everything David says about the AF system. Camera is great but it is still early days fie their AF system. Everything else is great and I would argue the feature set on this cam is leagues above all the other brands at this pricepoint. There are also some small bugs with HDMI out. It annoyed me quite a bit that u can't have display jnfo on both hdmj and lcd. Also manual AF assist (punch in) is not transmitted onto the monitor (and I hate using the shinobi punch in).
Yes, by really tweaking the settings based on use case can really fix the issues. I just hope it keeps getting better to get closer to the Sony/Canon world
I got a s5II for with the 20-60 kit lens for roughly 1300.00 it's my first camera but I feel it's a great deal considering that for about 1000 I was going to get a r50 or a a7II. I have no system preference as I'm a hobbyist that wants to use it for both YT tutorials, product reviews and occasional travel trips.
I've been using Panasonic for several years now but cannot find this camera anywhere. I'm also hoping that the sucessor to the S1H mkii will have a beefier more video centric body - perhaps something like the C70.
I feel the S2H or S1HII (whatever they call it) will be pretty epic. The GH5II was an interesting camera. They basically fixed some of the main issues with the GH5 with that model and made it more usable, but it of course still has the older contrast based AF.
Certain settings are meant for different moments I think face eye autofocus’s would be ideal. There’s a video that explains the autofocus best use in different scenarios. I feel like that may solve the issue. Great video and content as a s5iix user it seems like user error because the auto focus is beautiful if you understand the system.
I appreciate the video and the great detail of the insight. However, I wish there were more chapters that helped separate the multiple detailed tips within the sections that exist to help me navigate back and forth more quickly.
i’ll pay you $10 if you do it for me! HMU on instagram or twitter if you’re serious about this. wouldn’t mind better chapters lol. handle on either account is: dvdaltizer
Are you mad? I am a software engineer - you just said it should be quite simple to do an OS uggrade. Do you know what that entails exactly - it is a massive job.
another point for the pani is the external ssd ProRes hq and all intra for clean footage without compression artifacts with very affordable media unlike all other camera's that require cf media for those high data rates so it compensates for the lack of more Lense options price wise if you are into long shoots.
Accidentally turning the dial for the shutter angle seems to be a common beef and I can see that being an annoyance and spoiling footage. There IS a locking mechanism on the mode dial for my old GH4, so they do have a history there... Being able to digitally disable the shutter angle seems a no brainer. How many times do you not want to use 180 degree?
the one mystery I can not seem to solve is how to uncouple AE from the shutter button ?!? For some reason the camera locks AE when pushing the button. On my Sony I can uncouple this so I can lock focus with the shutter button but AE is freely adjusting at all times. Any Idea - I looked at the menue 1001 times -I studied the manual - I asked people - am I stupid ?!?
Totally. If they continue to upgrade their cameras AF and lens options (which I know they will with time) this system will be the best on the market. Love their color. Love the features. It’s awesome.
@@GHPod Ok, good to know. Did you click using the joystick to confirm the target so the main box stays on your selected target? Once you do that click right or left to move between faces. Edit: just tried on my wife and kids. You should be getting a box with two or four arrows depending on where in the frame the other person(s) are in the frame. The boxes are jittery but they do “slow “ down and the main yellow box is stable with the arrows.
Are you switching to LUMIX or have you been using Panasonic for the last few years? What are your thoughts on the system for hybrid shooters?

I am totally sure they will continue to update the AF over time! It will get more competitive I'm sure!
Really nice format guys. Highly informative and easy to listen to. Thanks

That’s amazing! Oh wow yeah I guess we’re all spoiled from great autofocus from all companies

2 years in from S5 through S1H and S1R to S5ii’s. Everything I need…just a couple of things I would still like… Happy enough with the system.
Totally. Very optimistic for the future.
So excited about the future of LUMIX products. Still crossing my fingers for a box style camera with a menu screen!
Just sold every system I own. S5Iix arrived yesterday
Wow! Full dedication! Hope you enjoy. Still one of the best deals around
Mine is on the way. I was still using a GH4. Selling all my glass but one because I still use it on my Inspire 2 drone.
You will like the new firmware with the auto focus upgrades :)

I use the Zone AF mode on my S5II, that address most all issues you listed.

Lol i think the Lumix menu system ist the best!
It really is solid now!
You had it in continuous auto focus so it continuously auto focused
I've sent hat some people turn on synchro scan to avoid changing the shutter angle dramatically accidentally
I am interested in what Panasonic is going to do with the Panasonic S1 Mark 2
Curious if you all noticed the Lumix switching from PDAF to Contrast AF using slow motion.
Use a he custom menu system and create your own bookmarks.

It’s me or the sound is behind half a second or so? I remember Gerald Undone mentioned something about this…maybe I’m mistaken IDK
I have an S5 iix and just recored 60fps for the first time. The video was broken up into 1 minute clips. Is this how it is supposed to be?
No you can change that in menu
Thank you, I found it. @@Xploretogether
The only issue with the 2X... it's that the RW2 files are not supported yet on Mac OS... so annoying :)
it is now!
Depending on the mode you are in there are boxes with arrows left or right to select the person you want to focus on.
Yeah there are but I was having issues with that too. It was popping back and forth from different subjects over and over.

Still a little sour from LX100 days and the horrible app that was bundled. Still have the camera and it's pretty nice, but I moved on to Canon...
