      I’ll be getting a gH7 I’m also a S5iix new user. Will be selling my gh6.
      Can’t let go of my MFT system it offers too much. I’d still choose it over my FF system. Other then HDR and lowlight I feel MFT wins pretty much every where else. Besides blurry background. But I use metabones so I’m good in that regard. 😊

    You are correct about the GH7 not having dual native ISO, as that is a feature usually reserved for more photography-focused cameras... BUT, the GH7 DOES have a Dual Output GAIN system, which is usually reserved for high-end cinema cameras like the Arri Alexa. Each pixel on the sensor of the GH7 is read out at two different amplification levels, one high and one low, and the two read-outs are then combined to make a single image. This is much preferred to Dual ISO for cine cameras, as it allows the camera to record video with much deeper shadows and highlights.

    • @jockturner1547
      @jockturner1547 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Is there much of a difference between dual iso and dual output gain? Is that not the same technology only being used in different ways? I thought a dual gain or dual iso as they’re used interchangeably meant there are 2 optimised gain levels, in the S5 cameras you can use those 2 at the different levels to maintain dynamic range and noise performance even at the higher iso. In the Gh7 it takes the 2 levels reads them both and combines it, like in an arri or C70. Could it not be possible to offer the second gain level as a second base iso. You would lose dynamic range boost but potentially gain a cleaner low light performance as you would be exposing your mid and highs to the second gain level rather than the first 500iso base.
      Would be nice to have the choice to swap out of dynamic range boost for potentially a cleaner, albeit a lower dynamic range, shot.
      Please correct me if I’m wrong, I really don’t know haha

      Too bad the GH7 doesn't produce a deeper image like cine cameras. Good try my man.

    • @Studiotek
      @Studiotek 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@jockturner1547 No, you are mostly correct. With the GH6 for example, it combines ISO 100 and ISO 800 when using a standard or natural profile with Dynamic Range Boost ON. In VLOG, it combines 250 and 2,000. If you turn DRB OFF, you can basically use either of those 2 ISOs (depending on if you are in vLOG or standard) as a native ISO. Many different tests on TH-cam show that they basically act as 2 different native ISOs. For example, in vLOG with DRB OFF, 1800 is much noisier than 2000 is. It's basically the same thing as dual native ISO, but you also have the option to combine both of them for better DR. Does that make sense?

    • @Studiotek
      @Studiotek 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@contentm3893 That's obviously not true at all, as the GH6 and GH7 are the only 2 cameras on the market rated for Arri's LOG profile to run NATIVELY in camera. The GH7 is brand new and has many updates needed to get the IQ to match up to the GH6, but the GH6 is one of the best cine cameras on the market in terms of IQ and color science.

    • @jockturner1547
      @jockturner1547 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Studiotek Well yeah that’s what I said really… in the GH7 and G9ii you can’t turn off DRB, which means you can’t take advantage of the second native iso as you said for the GH6. So I can’t make the choice to lower my dynamic range and improve my noise performance.

    Having shot on LUMIX cameras since the GH2, I’m pleased to see the GH7 has taken MFT to places we never expected. The smaller sensor allows the camera to do things like faster frame rates and less rolling shutter due to the need for less processing time.
    I own the GH5, but mainly use my S1H and EVA1 camera, as they produce better image quality. I’m going to hold out to see what the next iteration of the S1H offers, but it’s great to see MFT continue to get attention.

      @@MicroFourNerds I agree re the PL 25mm f1.4. It is really, really SPECIAL. It is the first lens I’d use to prove that 3D pop exists… and that it isn’t just Kasey Stern’s imagination! 🤣 The lens is a older design and I was watching a video by a newish TYber who is a scientist and he was explaining that 3D pop is to some degree dependent on the imperfections in lenses thus the more clinical, ‘perfect’ modern lenses exhibit it less. They made sense to me as the PL 35mm f2.4 is an older design and the other lens that I own that demonstrates it is probably the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS version 1. Again, the older coatings on that lens may be assisting with slightly better bokeh and pop.
      Many of the better film era lenses also have a certain pop… sometime in a more artistic and characterful manner.

    Thanks for the review❤. I do wish the lens used on the GH7 is any of the m4/3 f1.7 which would give an equivalent of the f3.5 used on the S5iiX considering the 2x crop of m4/3. Personally, I don’t like the S5iiX for the crop in 4k60 & lack of 4k120 which II prefer the GH7 for & also the GH7 LCD screen
    AF on both are very good but I do like to see what the AF would be on the GH7 with adapted FF EF lenses via speed booster. If it does performers well then the GH7 would have similar DoF and low light capability similar to the S5iiX.

      Weight and portability, & that's not even yet diving into the $$$ difference between FF & M43's LENSES, especially primes.
      If ur doing all tripod-,based and/or studio work weight isn't much of a concern, but for handheld work, full-frame lens barrels pack some hefty, and you better have Popeye forearms or it's gonna be a long day.... And full frame primes are $$$, just to pour salt on an open wound.
      Those are just off the top of my head. FF's are great quality, but you absolutely have to be prepared in ur budget metric for all the extra associated costs we didn't cover all of them, like cages&rigs etc....just as example...

    Both systems have their merits depending on usage. m43 is fantastic for high travel situations with a small footprint, especially with telephoto lenses. This also means sports and wildlife, the the benefit of being able to shoot C4K 120p in 10bit at full sensor width. If you need Prores Raw and a small footprint, the GH7 does it internally, alleviating the need for an external recorder. It also has better IBIS than the S5 II.
    The S5 II and related cameras are excellent for lower light situations, give more control of depth of field, and for situations where the best image quality is needed. Interviews have an extra bit of 'sparkle' on the S5 compared with many m43 cameras. The S5 II can still be fairly compact with the right lenses and minimal/no rigging. And if you need to shoot stills, m43 is fine, but full frame will deliver better quality files.

      It's at ur own risk to try it but there's wide-angle adapters that attach onto lenses.
      A couple years ago when I got a Sony ZV-1 I saw a video about & then ordered one such wide-angle adapters. However, that particular adapter didn't screw into lens threads ( like 63mm ) on the lens barrels outer ring's edge the way mist filters do ...instead it came with a 2-sided dual-adhesive that "stuck" the adapter on like 2-sided dual-adhesive backing tape (( this was a customized pre-cut especially formed doughnut shape precisely for that camera )).
      But my point is I was pretty surprised how well it actually worked. I thought it was kind of gimmicky before I tried it so I just did out of boredom & curiosity not expecting much.
      Turns out, I couldn't have been more dead wrong.
      That adapter really worked and there was no drop in image quality.
      You can Google wide-angle adapter, and I would recommend knowing the lens thread size of the or a particular go-to lens you had in mind, and get a wide-angle adapter made specifically for interchangeable lenses of that exact lens thread size.
      Good Luck !!

    - Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 is standard prime lens gold.3D pop etc.
    - Olympus 45mm f1.8 is unbelievably small and cheap and gives a good taste of Olympus feathered bokeh.
    - Olympus 75mm f1.8 is a work of art and, compared with a FF, delivers 150mm equivalent very discretely. It delivers feathered bokeh similar to the Oly 45mm f1.2.

      Basically all of the Panny/ PL / Oly Pro / Oly Premium prime lenses are excellent. I have PL 15mm, PL25, and Oly f1.8s: 17, 25, 45 and 75mm. They are all excellent but the Oly 12-40mm zoom stays on my G9 most of the time. The final lens I have is the 14-140mm which is fantastic.l for travel.
      I think my next camera will be the G9II but it is still a touch expensive presently (same price as the S5II where I live). Realistically the GH7 is overkill for me.
      The S5II/X is tempting but I really want to avoid the weight and bulk.

      @@Democratiser The 14-140 was my first MFT lens bought wiith the GH1 in 2009. I always hated that lens. I still have it, but never use it. My travel camera is either G9 with 12-35/2.8 plus DJI Pocket 1 + 2. Earlier in the year I took the Sony RX100 VII plus the Pockets to London. For hand held walk around video I rely on the G9 plus Pocket. For more static museum style shooting as I was doing in London, I save weight and size, and go down to the RX100 VII. In both cases, the DJI Pocket series are hugely valuable. If only they had zoom it would be all I take. But they don't and Panasonic and Sony are my workhorses.

    - Great review Sam. Try the 9mm for GH7 / G9II vlogging.
    - As I have a 5DIII I don’t need a FF for stills.
    - I have a G9 with 7 primes (Oly and PL) and 2 zooms (Oly Pro and Panny) and LOVE the smaller size and weight of the lenses.
    - I bought a LUMIX 50mm S f1.8 anticipating I’d get a S5II. BUT I really like the images coming out of the G9II and GH7.
    - The G9II and S5II have more than enough capability for me.
    I’m thinking about a G9II or a GX9II if it ever arrives.
    In a few years I might get a S5II )or a S9 if it is cheap enough).
    If I was starting from scratch… hmmm…I think a G9II.
    If I could have my cake and eat it with no budget limit and accounting for future cameras, id get a GX9II (assuming it arrives and is basically a G9II minus some things…) plus a new S1H2, or whatever it is to be called.

The colours and sense of 'thickness' to the image are noticeably better. The cinelikeD2 and V2 on the S5 are much better than the G9's cinelike D and V. Get a secondhand S5, you will not be disappointed. I still love my G9, but when I want optimal still and video quality, S5 is the one. S5 batteries are backwards compatible and higher capacity, too.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andersistbesser Check your assumptions, mate, I have an Olympus E-PL3 and a GX80 which I both bought because they're small. MFT is limited by physics which is less of a problem nowadays for low light but is still unsolvable for depth of field. Totally agree: Your GH can do more than my S5 and it's all stuff I don't need. What I need for my artistic vision is shallow depth of field, swirly bokeh etc. to match what I'm doing photographically on film for stills. And that's something no MFT camera can do. Size is the only true strength MFT has and all the manufacturers are ignoring that strength at the moment. I don't need Arri log, I need a small camera with good stabilisation, PDAF, mechanical shutter and a viewfinder 🤷‍♀ FF is pricing MFT out of relevance for professional work IMHO. There is just no reason to put a dinky sensor in a massive camera when sensor price isn't a factor anymore. 10 years ago MFT made a lot of sense, but it has been going through a bit of an identity crisis lately. I hope the format returns to its strengths instead of just being abandoned because it can't compete with sensors 4 times the size. That doesn't mean the GH7 is a bad camera, cracking performance for such a small sensor, definitely. I just think that it's pitted against too many FF alternatives now.

Gx80 and g81 are outdated and not good enough in terms of dynamic range , af and everything else but image quality. I use a batterygrip for filming and photography. I want my camera bigger not smaller. I want room for my hands and not a toy. I earn money with my cameras, ergonomics are important for work and tiny cameras are not ergonomic. • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andersistbesser Well, there we have it, it's the right camera for what you do, but I have different requirements because I earn my money from the "fine art" side of things rather than studio work. I need shallower depth of field for my work which is why I went for the S5. My MFT requirements are also different because I usually carry it alongside other heavier cameras usually shooting film. I also have smaller hands, so for me ergonomically the S5 II is already quite uncomfortable to hold. The grip on the GH7 looks even more uncomfortable. As for competing for the same price: Since I earn money with my cameras too the price doesn't really make much of a difference, 500 more or less every 5 years really make no proper dent anymore, does it? Also the GH4 was 1700€ same as the full frame Sony A7. The GH7 is 2200€ and the S5 II is 1600€ at the moment. And what does the GH7 bring to the table when the extra features it offers are irrelevant for most people getting into videography right now? What about 5 years from now when there are plenty of used FF options that will offer anything a videographer might need because we've practically reached peak video now? Even Panasonic sees the writing on the wall for MFT or they would have updated the GX80 instead of giving us a full frame camera without a viewfinder first. I hope the GH7 will be a success for them, but I have my doubts about the GH8 or GH9.

      @@kayodeolaosebikan7462 Ya, I got the sig 18-35 and it all works out to being something like a 25-50mm f2.4 in FF terms. So the classic FF 24-70 f2.8 would be a native lens and be 'better'. Then if you want less depth of view, or more light, you can always get faster lens for FF. Also native lens will work much better with auto focus.
      So the old speed booster option is a great to have if you have no choice to use it. By today's standards its not longer what I would call 'professional' if your doing low light events/indoors stuff where you don't have control of the light. Speed boosters are more of a hack then a standard in quality or workflow.
