I just bought the original S5 a few weeks ago. Couldn’t resist. You knew a new camera was being released because there was fantastic deals on the S5. I love this camera and look forward to upgrading to version two in a couple years when the price comes down like the S5 has now.
Great video Emily! The pictures from Tokyo looked amazing and honestly what Panasonic did with the S5II is terrific, it’s such a capable professional camera but at a quite reasonable price. Would love to see more open gate / reframing stuff, like editing one sequence three ways with widescreen, 16:9, and vertical?

Always loved Panasonic, but did sell off all my MFT stuff to go all in with Fuji. I’ve got Nikon DSLR FF and have been looking for a FF mirrorless but AF has always concerned me. However, this camera actually seems stellar! I think it might be the one. The great LUMIX menu, FF, a true hybrid that can now equal Sony at a great price point. Glad you got out to Japan with the usual suspects - amazing for your channel and well deserved. You make great content. Your channel for sure deserves to really grow.
Thank you for including 1080p in your video review and slo motion test. Many other channels exclude it like the plague but the reality is 1080p is a very useful format for recording video and it's usually where you get more fps but at the cost of resolution which is fine because we often deliver in 1080p for social media anyway.
Lumix did this unveil right. They identified proper genuine influencers in-segment. Nobody who has trust problems. Flew them in. Handed out gear (for keeps, I believe?) Let them be honest. I think it's gonna work out for Lumix on this one.
Great video, so pleased Panasonic have finally gone PDAF. love the open gate thing as well, very useful for reframing. I was wondering when someone would give us a basically full sensor readout at 25fps. Amazing.
Another great video Emily, thanks. This looks like a great upgrade. One added bonus, this and the original S5 use the same battery. No need to drag two chargers around any more.
I just want to thank you for your amazing 'Open Gate' diagram and explanation. First person to walk me through it in a way my dim self could understand.

Hey Emily, can you verify whether the S5 ii still has the "live view composite" feature? On the original S5, that was essentially a really awesome way to use a sort of bulb mode. So far however, in regards to this camera no one has mentioned the feature in these initial reviews and I can't find any mention of it online. Fantastic review! Thanks! Video looks awesome. This camera was already a steal at $2k, but it's on sale for the holidays here in the US for only $1,697! You can also bundle several lenses for not much more. I got the 50 1.8 for an extra $47, so only $1,747 total which is incredible. Best bang for the buck by a mile.
Excellent review. Interesting about the LUT for stills, thank you for mentioning this feature. I thought your still images and video of Tokyo scenes were lovely.
Hi Emily! Thanks for the review! Awesome video btw, regardless of the content. It was quite up beat and colorful, and the skin tones you get from this camera is really nice! I have a couple of quick questions though: Does this camera support the little Olympus FL-LM3 flash? Also, does is support linking the Focus Point to the Auto Exposure system (like exposing for the face when it is detected?)
Hmm very good questions! To my knowledge the Olympus and lumix hotshoes have always been compatible, so I would say yes to the flashgun. I haven’t had chance to check the flash on this unit yet but it should have all the exposure features with it being a hybrid camera 😊
Emily I’m so glad to watch your video! Would you say the s5ii’s hd120p-180p (cropped 180 is sharper i hear) is a sharp as the gh6 hd120-300fps? (Gh6 4k 120 is def sharper lol)
Thanks for the video. Excellent work. I just shot a feature film on the S5. I shot into the Ninja V so I was getting FULL FRAME, 5.9k RAW Proress 422, 12 bit at 400 Mbs. The image is poetry. Mind blowing at this price. I don't use auto focus and I don't like that they are charging for the RAW output on this S5Mk II. I just don't think I need an update. As a narrative filmmaker, who always needs a monitor (Ninja) on the camera for framing and focusing, the first S5 is all I will need, probably, for the next 5 years, and, for the price drop you will now see on the original S5, you can get a Ninja and go for the FULL FRAME, 5.9k RAW Proress 422, 12 bit at 400 Mbs.
Hey Emily, here’s my question. If Panasonic was to release a GH6s with the same features as the S5 mark ii x. Which one would you purchased, & why? By the way, I purchased your Everything pack. Nicely done, keep up the good work.
Brilliant thank you hope you enjoy it! That is a good question because both cameras are aimed to a slightly different purpose. The gh6 (gh6ii) honestly easily wins when it comes to high end video options. We have no crop, ever. We have 4k 120p we have the ability to record ProRes internally. It’s very video centric. The S5ii is great because it really splits down the middle and caters for photo and video. The larger sensor does perform so well at night. Because I have invested in so much m43 glass, I think the gh6ii would be the winner for me! The gh6 as it is is almost perfect!
I was thinking the same thing for myself. I own the GH5 & the GH6. So a newer GH6 mark ii would be the perfect camera. I use my GH6 only for construction photos, & videos. So autofocus is not a big deal for me, for now. But it would be nice to have the next-gen technology in this camera. Thanks for the reply.
This camera is great and everything (the original S5 is still great as well), but what about MFT? The G Series specifically? I fear it's dead. Thank you for covering photography more than just an afterthought though! Most reviewers just kept talking about video.
For “talking head” shots to camera, I have to admit the focus is delightful on the s5ii. But for everything else I think the GH6 is still the best for my needs!
Great video, thanx! It seems to be a great camera. I have the S5 and love their camera set up. I just struggle with panas skintones. How about making a video about this. Maybe you can show us, how to make them warmer!? Thanx
@@MicroFourNerds Pretty good price around 300 euros! Just toying with the idea of selling some of my Fuji gear to get the Sigma 28-70mm instead :D Thank you for replying!
Beautiful pictures :) Thanks for metioning my favorite menu function, I love it on my S1H and really miss on S1.Does camera also remember different settings in video mode and photo mode or it keeps current settings after switching mode?
Olympus also has PD+CD hybrid albeit that first came out with that many years ago. Do we see this differential baked in to the panny? Pannys CD was already plenty good for photography, in fact better than PD on some measures. I wonder if hybriding it might have handicapped it in some aspects. Only time will tell I suppose.
That real time LUT would be gold on micro 4/3! Not for video but for photo. It could open up an unlimited world of film sims that us micro 4/3 users have been envious of Fujifilm ... put that in a “GX10” small rangefinder in this day and age of JPEG shooters and it’ll sell like hotcakes
Great video Emily 🙏. I'm following you from good lens collection days of MFT. You have a lot of experience with Panasonic systems I can say. In your future videos I'll love to see if you cover the following topics: *Test all the existed full frame Panasonic lenses for performance with new Panasonic S5MII phase autofocus engine in day and night environments both photo and video. *Open gate shooting style possibilities with this new camera as much of the audience like me are in search of a tool with fast social media content creation. *slow motion capabilites of this camera with phase detect with different subjects, multi subjects as create cinematic feel. This feature is available as S&Q option on dial but how it performs with new auto focus. *Live crop is my favorite, if possible please cover that topic with new phase detect. It is much used feature as save lot of time in post. What new codec it covers with it. Is 4k live crop Panasonic added with this new S5MII or still full HD? If it is still full HD please inform Panasonic research team to add 4K or 6K live cropping in S5 mark 2 with an update. I know they are listening to you. I know I've requested a lot but I'm excited my favourite system now have a phase detect autofocus. And you are the best who can explain all in detail. Thank you Emily for all the great videos 🙏.
Excellent introduction to this new model, I wanted to know if the excellent functions of time lapse and live view composite are still implemented. Thank you.
Live composite is coming in firmware update, not there yet at 1.0 but definitely coming. The timelapses are fab I love the timelapses from the s5 series!

Thank you!
Thanks for another charming and informative videos. I’m excited about the S5II too!
Finally a review that focused on photography! Looks really neat, might relegate my Fuji film to my b camera for photography!
would a gh5 lens fit on this camera?
So impressed and has me drooling 🤤
I’m in love❤❤….with the G9ii/GH6ii that could have all the S5ii’s goodies… and of course, Emily too😊👍
Emily I’m so glad to watch your video!
Would you say the s5ii’s hd120p-180p (cropped 180 is sharper i hear) is a sharp as the gh6 hd120-300fps? (Gh6 4k 120 is def sharper lol)
Awesome video Emily! And so cool that you got to go to Tokyo for this!
Great review, thank you.
I will wait up to the first real world tests with the fibal edition of the LUMIX S5 II X.
Very well presented Emily..you've explained things really well! What an exciting product
Perfect camera. Lumix for life.
Yes we’re really spoiled with most cameras now aren’t we? I love the original S5!
One of the few I'll watch :)
Can't believe how many people they paid to go to Japan. Glad you got to go!!!
Excellent review. As an S5 & GH6 videographer this was so useful. Thank you.
Great video!
Thank you!! ☺️
First time seeing your channel. I love this review. Completely sold on the S5II. Just subbed to your channel.
Great Video Emily! Really enjoyed this.
Hi ! Great video as always 😊 I wondered if your camera takes a few seconds to turn on after you pushed the on/off switch ? Thanks a lot !
It does! A lot of the lumix cameras do unfortunately. It's quite annoying
@@MicroFourNerds thank you for your answer ! I almost sold it for that reason, but the IQ and color science got me hooked 😅
Fantastic news!! Now I need one. Might sell an s5 body and upgrade. Great video.
Very cool review :) Quick question, do you know if the current S5 battery grip will fit the new S5ii? Ta in advance :)
I’ve never had the grip myself, so sorry I can’t answer your question! Given how similar they are I would hope so though 😊
the more reliable review
Wonderful review!
This camera is great and everything (the original S5 is still great as well), but what about MFT? The G Series specifically? I fear it's dead. Thank you for covering photography more than just an afterthought though! Most reviewers just kept talking about video.
I feel the opposite! I think lots of these new features will be ported over 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great vid thanks... Has the S5ii won your heart over the GH6?
For “talking head” shots to camera, I have to admit the focus is delightful on the s5ii. But for everything else I think the GH6 is still the best for my needs!
@@MicroFourNerds Thanks for that ;-)
Hoping for a GH6II to supplement my current camera
Great video, thanx! It seems to be a great camera. I have the S5 and love their camera set up. I just struggle with panas skintones. How about making a video about this. Maybe you can show us, how to make them warmer!? Thanx
Thank you so much for the lovely review! Looking to pick this camera up ASAP, would you say the 20-60mm kit lens is worth it? Thank you for the video!
If you can get it at a good price - YES.
I haven’t used my 24-104mm f4 since getting the smaller stock lens
@@MicroFourNerds Pretty good price around 300 euros! Just toying with the idea of selling some of my Fuji gear to get the Sigma 28-70mm instead :D Thank you for replying!
Beautiful pictures :) Thanks for metioning my favorite menu function, I love it on my S1H and really miss on S1.Does camera also remember different settings in video mode and photo mode or it keeps current settings after switching mode?
Perhaps they will implement PDAF in a future GH6 version. (GH6ii or GH6S😊 ?)
Could be beneficial. Not an AF fan as a filmmaker
the footage looks amazing! what color profile did you used?
All V-log for the video footage 😊
Olympus also has PD+CD hybrid albeit that first came out with that many years ago. Do we see this differential baked in to the panny? Pannys CD was already plenty good for photography, in fact better than PD on some measures. I wonder if hybriding it might have handicapped it in some aspects. Only time will tell I suppose.
Great video! Thanks. Really enjoyed it. Looking forward to getting one myself.
In your future videos I'll love to see if you cover the following topics:
*Test all the existed full frame Panasonic lenses for performance with new Panasonic S5MII phase autofocus engine in day and night environments both photo and video.
Ermigod the want is strong with this one! Great review.
