Honor Killings In Pakistan: The Kohistan Case

  • In May 2012, a grainy cellphone video emerged in a remote and deeply conservative village in northern Pakistan. The video showed four young women singing and clapping in a room as two young men danced to the music. The village elders saw the celebration as a blatant defiance of strict tribal customs that separate men and women at gatherings, and a decree was issued for those in the video and their families to be killed as their actions were deemed 'dishonorable.'
The women and one of their sisters, aged just 12, were allegedly imprisoned for a month and tortured before being killed. The men went into hiding but three of their brothers were shot dead.
Every year, nearly a thousand people are known to be killed in the name of honor in Pakistan. Many more go unreported, considered a part of everyday life - but the killings in Kohistan became national news after the surviving brother of the victims made it his mission to seek justice. VICE News host Hani Taha travels to Pakistan to meet Afzal Kohistani to investigate one of the country's most perplexing honor killing cases, three years on.
Produced by Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, VICE News finds out some of the grimmest truths about the pervasive culture of so-called honor killings in the region.
This video was originally published on VICE in 2016.

Khadr Trudeau you sound really uneducated on killing people you say the prophet teaches no hate but people are killing women for doing dishonorable things, so what’s bringing this dishonor? Women do something small and the hate built from others are the reason why they kill them, they call it honorable. It’s not honorable it’s the amount of hate you have from someone to make you kill them. You just use the word “honorable” to hide the fact that it’s a crime.

@Sophie S I read quite a few, did you? Afzal spoke to a lot of local media besides Vice in the 3 years following the publication. Kohistani campaigned for over seven years to keep the case in the public eye. Java Films also released a video in 2016, called "Honor Killings Unveiled: The Kohistan Video Scandal"
"On July 31, 2018, a new case was registered at Palas police station on the Supreme Court's orders.
Four suspects namely Umar Khan, Saber, Mohammad Sarfraz and Saeed were arrested. Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to killing three of the girls - Begum Jan, Sireen Jan and Bazeega - by firing, saying they had disposed of the bodies in Nala Chorh.
Afzal had been of the firm view that the suspects were lying. “They killed all five girls by severe torture and are not identifying graves as it will reveal their brutality,” he had said at the time.
Afzal had been receiving constant death threats, prompting the Supreme Court to direct the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to provide him security, but the orders were reportedly not followed.
In January this year, while talking to media representatives in Bisham, Afzal had said that during the last court hearing he was scared as his rivals had informed their group about his arrival at the civil court in Kolai-Palas Kohistan."

He was already in the public eye, and his case had come to international attention, so sharing his face was justified. As for the secret location, a) he was murdered, but in public, not there b) there's about a half-day's journey, some of which was on foot through a remote area of the mountains that wasn't filmed on the way to their home. There didn't seem to be any important landmarks in the footage of his home, so I don't see any problem there.

Scrolling through the comments, I learned that Afzal Kohistani has since been killed and many people here are blaming Vice for irresponsibly publicizing his identity and whereabouts. While I agree that more should have been done to protect him and others cooperating, if this video was originally published in 2016 and he was shot in March of 2019, he may not have been in the same place. Given his public protests, his identity (and image) were already known to those seeking him out and anyone could have followed him after he left a court appearance. They may have waited to lull him into a false sense of security to catch him unaware. Vice was obviously irresponsible, but the connection between that and his tragic killing is at best, correlated, not directly causal. This entire story is maddening and sad. We need journalists to tell these stories, however. Between the recent travel vlogs and the fact that this country has had a female Prime Minister, I'm so surprised that this is happening in Pakistan. It seems so uncharacteristic of a nation whose population is uniformly regarded as kind and hospitable. I guess this is the epitome of charity needing to start at home.

it doesn't even have to be fact. Anyone can just claim that someone did something "offensive" out of malice like the Salem Witch trials and the whole village will be after them.

@Francesca Buonanno Crimes like this happen rarely in the major cities the mostly happen in very small cities (almost a village) and villages because the illitricay there is very high they donot know what to do they cant base it on islam because it isnt true it's just that their ego's are broken and this happens in some villages and it is wrong but the village council does have quite a big role in this and in places like this people donot think rationally
And people putting this on islam please educate yourself

@Francesca Buonanno it shouldnt happen i agree and for the arranged marriages the marriage succes rate us very high while the marriages in the us end up having 52 percent divorce rate and arranged marriages are done with consent of the female and male it's not like their parents force them and if the woman says even once that she doesnt want to do it the imam (similar to priest) would stop the marriage right there i dissagree on arranged marriage thing but i agree in the honour killing point with you

Islam doesnt teach this, they are uneducated people, If this would have been the case in ancient times, Khadija RA would have never been able to marry Prophet Mohammad. Shame on these uneducated people who mislead the world about islam.

@Meena Raju what's a pedophile? Clearly you are unaware of the definition. Prophet Muhammad had many enemies during his lifetime we can agree? Why did not one ever make an issue of him being a so called paedophilia? Also why among his 9 some say 14 wives of his only one is questioned of being of young age?
Paedophilia is a condition where someone exclusively seeks younger mates. Cut the bull shit don't be a dummy in public,
One thing worse than being an idiot is proving to a billion people on youtube your an idiot smdh

Horrible, just horrible.
