    The BMW Group continues to focus on the implementation of its electro-mobility strategy, with the company concentrating all its technological expertise relating to battery cells at a new competence centre.
    The battery cell is the heart of the battery. It determines performance, energy content, charging capabilities and lifespan, thereby making a significant contribution to the performance of an electrified vehicle.
    In the labs, research and prototyping facilities, which will make up the battery cell competence centre, specialist departments will analyse cell design and cell technology. They will also create prototypes of future battery cells, focusing on the chemical composition of the cells, use of different materials, how the cell behaves in critical or extremely cold conditions, charging and rapid-charging behaviour and evaluating cell sizes and forms. This in-house technological expertise is key to enhancing the battery, thereby enabling higher performance capabilities.
    The BMW Group will also gain build-to-print expertise and can then contract out production of battery cells produced to its exact product requirements and specifications. This core competence - which covers the entire value chain from selection of materials, cell design, integration into battery systems, manufacturability and production technologies - gives the company a definite competitive edge, while leveraging cost benefits and economies of scale.
    The BMW Group has already completed years of research into battery cells and acquired a high level of evaluation competence, especially through the development of the BMW i models. The company will concentrate know-how from various specialist departments and locations at the new Battery Cell Competence Centre and step up its efforts in this area to achieve faster impact. Research findings will be incorporated directly into the latest battery generation.
    This interdisciplinary competence centre aims to advance battery cell technology and introduce it into production processes. The company will invest a total of 200 million euros in the location over the next four years, creating 200 jobs. The centre will open in early 2019.

    EV's are coming. Todays £75 ph ICE mechanics are tomorrows out of work blacksmiths. I'm an electrical engineer with an interest in power electronics. I'm gearing up for this right now!

    • @samanthamonaghan7579
      @samanthamonaghan7579 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep cause their won't be a need for suspense er I mean suspension and mechanical steering or other mechanical parts. Wait rumor has it even with the new electronic stuff some mechanics or apparently technicians as they are called these days seem to take course on that stuff, but that's a rumor.

      @judgenap 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too . I think were on the right track

    • @bradallen1832
      @bradallen1832 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the mental and experiential crossover from ICE to EV is good enough that most mechanics who learn EV mechanics and electronics now will do fine. Yes, it requires learning about electric things, so there is a bit of a hump there that may waylay some of the anti-electronic people, but a lot of mechanical people have the right brain set for electronics too. You're right that the BEST electronic people will be better suited to EV's than the BEST mechanics, so there might be a bit of a pay cut for the BEST mechanics.
      But I think the biggest determinant for today's mechanics to catch up is whether today's mechanics start learning EV stuff now rather than later, because later is too late. While some individual mechanics just won't hack it, most would if they start now, and if they're not too late in life, it would make sense to either update in their auto repair career or get a new better career.
      It's interesting: our society got stuck with ICE vehicles for a long time; we're not used to change, even though we've been lied to and say we're used to change. We've actually experienced a lack of change in terms of market forces in the vehicle realm. Natural innovation would have been slowly far more disruptive, but oil and ICE companies kept innovation down for a VERY long time.

    • @02Franxx
      @02Franxx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bradallen1832 Its going to be a long time until EVs really kick off, for one our electric infrastructure is already 50% efficient and can't handle the extra load that would be put on it. also mechanics will always be around and so will ICE, maybe electric for small cars but for the things that keep your world moving, construction,ag,transportation etc, all things requiring power and are used for more than just a people mover. diesel will always be around and has a lot more room to grow in efficiency power weight all that.

    What kind of battery cells were these? They were clearly not AA/AAA/cylinder based, and unless I missed something they looked like they were completely solid state. Their production gradually started from a thin layer with no liquid electrolyte added at any stage. Is that why they were "prototype" ones? I also don't get why they were extensively scrubbed or cleaned with what looked like plasma.

      You would be bored to death after a few weeks when tightening the same bolt and doing the exact same thing day in and day out over and over and over and over and over.....

    Great manufacturing system! EV will be the only transportation method for the future. Electric motor is incomparably simple to the conventional engine. It would need almost no repair.
