Good to be still learning after retiring from the trade since 1965. Still catching up with modern electrics, videos like yours are invaluable in understanding modern fault finding techniques. You cant get away with replacing plugs and points anymore.
Its difficult now to keep up Jim, So many things changing so quick can’t even change a bulb on some cars without a decent scan tool Thanks for watching
When I served my time as an auto electrician my teacher told me . . People don't pay for what you do . . They pay for what you know ! . . Nice video Ryan
When making repairs with insulating tape in tight areas, get a 1/4 inch socket put it on a drill and spin tape off a roll onto the socket to make a mini roll of tape. Makes it a lot easier to wrap looms in tight areas.
@@mrautoservices7354 One other question I know you use HGS data Do you use any other database I’ve used Autodata but found it the last few years to be useless. Tried Alldata but again it was hard to navigate but pretty good for wiring diagrams
Good sparkies are worth their weight in gold these days, the amount of time ive saved in the past by not being too proud to ask for electrical help is nobody's business, i really enjoyed watching this, keep them coming its invaluable knowledge for the more mechanically biased fitters out there
Brilliant videos Ryan.. Really insightful diagnosis.. When I look back it was relatively easy in the 1960's through to 80's as electrics were quite basic on 'everyday' vehicles. Modern cars are a completely different ball game.
I like the way you narrowed the fault location down rather than guessing and trying this and that and getting no where. What you do is worth any amount of money because you found and fixed the problem.
I loved this video and found it really interesting. I'm trying to learn more about electrical diagnostics as I service and repair al my own vehicles. Thanks!
Glad you explained about how you charge 😅 customer need to understand that. As already said what i agree with that they pay for what you know not always do.
Great video! I understand about customers being grumpy about payment. Some customers have been charged for parts and work before you’ve found the fault, so they feel a bit peed off. You come along and find the fault in 10 mins, good on you! You charge what you like.
Great job. Have you tried the liquid insulating tape? When it drys it,s pretty insulated. Good for small spaces that are hard to get tape round. Hope it helps. Thanks very much for the great video
Always like your videos!!! And you changed one of those bgpa units today. Other test was bottom right side of the unit is the relay switched live outputs and they wasn't turning off as the relay was stuck. Should switch off when car is locked.
Hello Ryan. Can i suggest a topic for a future video. Can you explain the theory of using a test lamp, is it to limit current so as not to burn something out. is it to provide a known current/voltage to a circuit to identify a high resistance. Do you select the size of the lamp acording to the fuse rating. I have seen a number of videos trying to explain the use of test lights but they dont explain it very well. Please keep up with the videos as this is one of my favourite channels
Great idea just keep putting higher rated fuse in until the fire starts then you know where the problem lies. Out of interest what do you do when there is a break in the wire but the insulation remain intact, with wires that are within reach you can work along gently pulling the wire and where the insulation stretches and necks is the break but when hidden away how do you find the break.
Great video Ryan. Do you have a link to the leads you use for connecting across fuses and the leads you use with the h7 bulbs do you? Cheers Ryan keep up the good work mate
Quick question regarding LIN bus. Is it OK to top into the LIN bus at any point? I retrofitted memory seats to an F10 BMW and plan to tap into the LIN bus used for my Heads up Display button as the wire is close to the FRM. Both LIN lines run to the FRM on my car, but of course there is no pin on my FRM for memory seats. I've taken 30B power and 31 ground from other modules. Not as concerned about those. Thanks in advance. Love your channel by the way!
Excellent troubleshooting for the three vehicles. How much do you pay per month for the Hella Guttman wiring diagrams and what connectors do you use when replacing wires? For example crimp connectors, solder bullet type or good old fashioned soldering and heat shrink
Brilliant content sir I’m curious I’m local to you I have a Honda Crv 2018 is there anyway to disable start stop without having to press the button each time thanks if it’s a service that can be done 👍
You can likely use a diagnostic cable+software to alter the module coding or code it out all together depending on the vehicle and the stop start implementation.
Would be nice to get links to some of your stuff used in the video like 3m of what gauge wire? Those connectors you have the OCA test lamp plumbed into, are those multimeter T-splitters? I just saw plastic tube. I understand people not wanting to give all their trade secrets away. You also showed a high load 12v bulb but never used it. Would have been nice to see that in action too.
The price is for your time skill and thst isnt cheap. However you are cheap because you spend time to correctly identify and fix first time. Repeat trips to garages and good old part darts cost way more
Great vid Ryan - in regards to the focus and cost - how did you manage that with the customer - I understand you charged what the job was worth but what was their expectations/ballpark when you originally made contact - not wanting to know actual costs mate just how you managed it
Before attending i notified the customer that an initial assessment charge is applied for the fault finding, Once the fault is found i then give a repair cost Thanks for watching
Hi Tim, By putting the testlamp in series with the fuse holder itself it lights up due to finding a path to ground (short) If the lamp did not illuminate it would mean a short is not present Obviously the feed side of the fuse holder has a live so when the opposite pin (output) finds a short to ground it will light up the test lamp bright indicating a short to ground is present
Can I ask where you get those quality circuit diagrams. As an industrial electrician, circuit diagrams are essential but usually struggle to get good diagrams for cars and plant
Think he said something like HGS in the video. Might be referring to Haynes manuals but the newer online subscription version. Also have the various TH-cam channels for auto mechanics like that dutch guy who have their own technical bulletin boards containing this stuff behind a subscription
Do you come across the B1099 fault a lot on the focus? Got that code on my 2012 focus, and but the rear bulb intermittently comes on when wiggled? I'm wondering if the issue could be in the same place you found the short on this focus?
You charge for the accumulated years of experience... The customer should be happy you sorted the problem quickly.... It could be sitting at a Dealership for weeks and the problem will still be there and still get charged
Voodoo friend of mine had her Vauxhall in the dealers with a door lock issue for 6 months all the kings men and all the kings technicians couldn’t figure out it was a blown fuse. Cars are too technical for no good reason.
Great video… you should value & sell your worth. how do you go about finding a short to +12? I have a non starter and the code is p0089 pressure regulator performance/short to +12 change solenoid, same thing. short to +12 the diagnostics saying.

Shocking that the manufacturer of those cars, didn’t think it was necessary to put in adequate protection for the wiring loom in the factory.
Not really shocking that a corporation would cut costs to save probably £0.05p per vehicle so they can get a bonus.
