I loved this moment in the theater. We knew Obi-wan had to leave with the lightsaber because we saw it in 4. As soon as the camera pans to it, we all knew he was gonna reach. But then the groan from Anakin shatters the moment. I got chills. It was a phenomenal cinematic moment. Thank you George!
Obi-Wan to Luke: “I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this.” Luke: “What is it?” Obi-Wan: “Your father’s lightsaber. He murdered many younglings with this… enjoy! Hope you’re not too susceptible to Force flashbacks!”
"Lightsabers sure are a lot heavier than I thought..." "No, it is just yours, it is weighted down by the souls of hundreds of children slaughtered in battle."
I heard tales that after the first battle of Genosis Anakin redesigned his Lightsaber for more practicality against other lightsaber duelists while Kenobi stayed more true to the original idea of peacekeepers. As for Anakin's point of view, Obi Wan was snatching away his creation and companion which had been with him through all his highs and lows.
I believe I heard it from another video about how many of the Jedi didn't like how Anakin was practicing more aggressive Lightsaber Forms and his new saber.
The way they fight is a factor too. Obi-wan is a defensive fighter. Anakin is a very much an offensive fighter. That made them an amazing team when they fought together during the clone wars.
A sword is a sword. The only difference is what the swordsman does with it. What possible alterations could be made? A laser sword is a laser sword. You expanded universe fans get rather silly with this stuff.
"I'm literally cooking here, please just kill me." "Oh but that wouldn't be the high grou.. I mean the jedi way, uh you know what im saying.. high ground🤷"
I like to think back to what he told anakin back in Attack of the Clones about losing his lightsaber , “this weapon is your life “ in a spiritual sense he took that saber from Vader as anakin “died”. Kindve poetic if you think of it that way. Edit: made this comment before getting through the video . Glad you see it that way too!
I'll tell you why Anikin was so outraged. While burning, he was able to see through the force, to a time so many years later, when his son while working for Disney, just tossed his lightsaber over his shoulder....
Even the force users, such as Sidious, who were the most disdainful toward lighsaber combat, always made sure they had it around. Bane discribed the sensation of being saberless is like being naked, defenseless. In my mind, it's like the wand in Harry Potter, the wizards feel powerless without (even if it is such a catalyser) it's like an old companion, even some soldiers and fighters get attached to their weapon. His saber, represent all these years of fighting, all his duels, all his challenges, all his sufferings, all his joys, it "followed" him everywhere during these years since the aftermath of the battle of Geonosis, and thanks to the tv show... we know it was a lot, a long long journey... I would have been heart broken to lost such a token of my very life.
To Obi-Wan, Anakin’s lightsaber was what he believed the only thing that was left of him. Even though Padme in her dying moments asked Obi-Wan not to give up on him and she believed there was still good in him. Though Obi-Wan wasn’t so sure. That’s why he kept both his and Anakin’s in a concealed box 🗃️. He only wanted to remember Anakin as a great Jedi and a good friend. And when Luke was of age, he could pass it to him in his journey into becoming a Jedi. He needed it to help him not think about what happened to Anakin or the fact that he tried to kill him. Now that he was Vader, he didn’t deserve Anakin’s lightsaber. It was only for a Jedi.
@@csguy3223 Actually it was weeks later, when he learned from a pre-recorded hologram news release from Coruscant that Vader was alive and wearing an exoskeleton. He was in an Mos Eisley cantina when it was shown and was horrified to see he somehow survived.
This video cuts deep to your core (no pun intended). The part about Anakin not being able to use the force when a few moments before he was cut down, he was likely at his strongest, really makes you feel how far he had fallen and the cost/consequence of that choice.
I never realised he was reaching for his lightsaber. I thought he was reaching out for Obi Wan to help him. There is a section of dialogue that was deleted where Anakin begs for Obi Wan's help, when Obi Wan refuses he says "I hate you". I thought him reaching was a remnant of this and he is actually begging for Obi Wan's help. Never knew it had anything to do with his lightsaber.
I honestly don't know how you, and everyone who voted for you, thought that Anakin was asking for help. He was trying to kill Obi-Wan and he shows no signs of begging for help no matter how backed against the wall he is as a darkside
@@fu_ck1 Anakin is not going to beg and backstab. He's just going to backstab you straight up. There was no begging. Anakin, nore Darth Vader, ever begged. He went through enormous pain and problems physically and mentally. He even moaned in agony. But he never begged.
Anakin would never give up a fight on his own; neither would Vader. Him reaching for his lightsaber while being burned alive was a sign of his Jedi training. Obi-Wan was dealt a hand that involved the “Trolley Situation”. No matter what Obi-wan did, there was no right answer. Does he pull the switch and execute Anakin? Does he do nothing at all? All he could think to do was pick up Anakin’s lightsaber. Obi-Wan supposedly didn’t deal with absolutes, his way of conveying that was by leaving Anakin to die. Was he right? Maybe. It just reminds me of the Neutral Planet in Futurama.
My thoughts on this moment remain the same- that Obi Wan leaving Anakin laying there to burn to death is the most dark sided thing he has ever done, and is a far more cruel choice than just finishing him off.
obi wan was flawed man and not a perfect jedi. He raised the kid since he was a boy more like a brother then a master. The kid was family to him and he made a non decision. it is also implied he and one of the mandalorians were a thing.
I agree. I love Obi-Wan as a character, but this single moment has me at odds all the time. How could you be so selfish? I'm sure theirs a number of things going on in his head, granted the situation and circumstances are so unbelievably dire theirs genuinely nothing real I can compare it to, but even with that. You should have finished him off, for his own sake, yours and the Galaxy, counting on the force to snuff out its own chosen one I think was silliness and yes he did eventually fulfill the prophecies but setting that aside, this moment of weakness from Kenobi I almost feel is unforgettable, you had one job, not even trying to make a joke. You must kill Anakin, to know him as personally as he did, the extent and full potential he could be for Good or for worse, this at least should've given him the strength to finish the job.. but all that aside I digress.. Obi-Wan man, I love you but you fumbled, big time.
@@redwarrior9663I always thought that was silly. Sure it looks goofy on the screen but he was literally only a few steps away from Anakin’s severed body and could’ve just easily went down there and stabbed him, easy as that. Just two seconds and then dip
As designer one eloquently said ",don't touch that's my shit, don't touch that's my shit!".. I think it fits well here with anakins very likely feelings. The saber that vader builds to replace the old one was just a bigger fusion of his 1st saber (the emitter) and the last (hilt).. I think it's interesting that for a gut teing to kill and bury anakin, would rebuild his weapon as a fusion of two of anakins preferred sabers..he took the same emmiter type as his green saber, and the hilt of his final jedi saber and made his sith weapon...its only difference is the size and dimensions of a few parts and color...why would a man who is trying to forger his past rebuild his weapon in the image of both his jedi weapons after he was knighted??? Wouldn't u want to completely change the entire blueprint of the sith weapon to seperate yourself as far as possible from "anakin"?? Yet he opts for not one but a amalgamation of both his jedi lightsabers!?!
It's the sith way to follow in your passions, he was most likely very attached to the designs of his Sabres which were crucial to his success and survival for so many years.
Love to see this channel still delivering amazing lore, as on it as Star Wars Theory is, his community doesn’t seem as interested in Star Wars but interested in the drama between channels
I watch Theory on and off and he seems a little more tired of drama and seems to want to go back to just talking about lore, which is encouraging to hear.
@@Ethan-wr2os yeah I can see that, big props to him because I enjoy his theory vids/what if videos, his community just isn’t that cool to be a part of in my eyes, chat is filled with hate, not everybody but a good bit of it is unfortunately
This channel also seem more straight to the point than SWT's sort ofd meandering, discussion and side-tracking. I think there is a time for either, but when I'm interested in a specific thing I very much appreciate getting to know the answer without delay, which this channel is good at.
Initially, the story was, Anakin became enraged at Obi-Wan because he thought Obi Wan was trying to hook up with Padme. His jealousy came from innocent playful banter between Obi Wan and Padme, although there was nothing but brother and sisterhood between them.
I honestly have to say that I saw that particular scene as Anakin reaching out for help from Obi-Wan... I never read the novelizations of Star Wars. But I grew up on the George Lucas films 🎥 To me, this particular scene always looked the same to me. Like Anakin still had that part of him reaching out to his former master for help. I feel like if he wanted his lightsaber, he definitely would have gotten it. I mean, he had remarkable force powers after he was 50% machine... I don't know. I love all of the original Lucas films ❤
In the novel Obi-Wan won the fight by shorting out the circuitry in Anakin's prosthetic hand causing him to drop the light saber as he came at Obi-Wan The "I have the high ground" statement was to stop Anakin from wondering why Obi-Wan still had hope of winning. That's why the light saber was on the ground even though Anakin still has the prosthetic hand that held it. Between the amputations and shorted out circuitry Anakin has no functioning limbs when Obi-Wan picked up the light saber. Anakin could only flail helplessly. As Obi-Wan held Anakin's light saber he decided against trying to save Anakin or even putting him out of his misery out of pure anger, he was perfectly OK with letting him suffer until he succumbed to his injuries or the lava caught up with him. Obi-Wan eventually came to not only regret that decision , but to be ashamed of it. He should have tried to save Anakin, when he walked away and left him to die horribly , it confirmed everything Anakin had come to believe about the Jedi.
I get where your coming from but remember Obi Wan saw anakin slaughter all of the younglings (innocent children) in cold blood and completley supported order 66.So in Obi's mind it was as if he deserved that death but for a jedi it wasnt "the jedi way" to finish a battle at all & what he did haunted him after
@@silentalliance3269 He was already cracking before the fight, the whole reason he wanted to go fight the emperor instead of Anakin was so he could essentially "fall on his sword"
Just to clarify the reason the "I have the high ground" scene was added, is legitimately because The actor Christian Haydensen hates walking up sloped hills. Hence why the scene is the way it is XD
My headcanon was that even though he was literally on fire and melting, Anakin reached for it because "its his lifeforce" as his Master reminded him all the time, was less about continuing the fight but was more like how they mirrored each other in combat, his Master's lessons were still there.
Jedi, Sith, they're all hypocritical and arrogant. Obi Wan saying "Only a Sith deals in absolutes" was an absolute itself. Revan was the realest, knowing that there is both hatred and love in a person and using them both correctly made him beyond a Jedi and a Sith.
It’s all about perspective. The Jedi were never exactly good, and the Sith were never exactly evil. In my perspective, it reminds me of nuclear powers. None are good, none are bad, all have an incredible power at their disposal. Obi-Wan was very hypocritical when he said “Only a sith deals in absolutes” A part of me believes he was giving Anakin a chance to rebuff him. Anakin was always a dissenter.
@@MrResin-xk2mf I've said that exact thing before. I disagree about the nuclear thing, at least weaponized nuclear power. I like to think that when Obi Wan said that, he realized that him saying that was also an absolute. Jedi and Sith are two sides of the same coin. That's why I say Revan is the perfect example of a true force user. He saw Yin and Yang basically and used it to become something far better than a Jedi or Sith. Even Luke started to realize it and created a new Jedi order, one that could be more successful. I just wish Disney had gone with Legends Luke instead of what we got. But hey, at least they can't change our head canon. Did you just stumble onto this video? Or channel? If so or if not, look for my comments and I'll look for yours from now on. I enjoy having a civil conversation about Star Wars, and I'd enjoy to do it some more with you. Just look for my Kakashi pfp!😁
I always saw it symbolically as Obi-wan protecting the last bit of good in Anakin and eventually giving that piece to Luke who would reawaken the good in Vader
I don't understand the connection of Anakin to his Lightsaber. He and the saber were one. It was with him more than any other Force infused object; it's said that the crystal chooses the Jedi. In this case, the crystal reflected nothing of Anakin's attack on the Tuskens, or his deep slippage to the dark side, before his battle with Obi-Wan. When Luke activated the saber, it didn't call out like a beacon across the Force to Anakin/Vader? I would assume the crystal's Force sensitivity is over estimated. Good expose on Anakin's final thoughts. His mind didn't wander to Padme, or her well being. Hate consumed him - not strong enough to have one last jab at Obi-Wan who knelt to collect the saber. Did he know Sidious was on his way to rescue him and to hang on? Was this it? No voice of Qui-Gon Jinn? Or his mother?
Just a theory but perhaps the crystal didn't call out to Anakin because at that point in time as we're told many times the jedi knight Anakin Skywalker was essentially completely gone, 'killed' by Darth Vader so the connection would be effectively severed.
I know that's not how it went down, but a part of me always imagined it to be: Anakin: "AARGH IT BURNS!! THE PAIN!! MAKE IT STOP! GIVE ME MY LIGHTSABER SO I CAN END THE PAIN!! PLEEEASSEE!!!" Obi Wan: "lol no, suffer!"
Thank you ... As a person who is down from jump but did not read the books this helps a lot! These a grand master level life lessons rapped up in Pop Lore.
It's kinda of hard when your the mastermind in piecing together originally an entire universe, even all source material of what you may think of is based in something or somethings previously created that by their own were also based on previous one (not entirely based, but drunk some inspiration. original is an overrated concept when compared to evolution or re-imagination or whatever in the world you chose to pick).
I know I'm in the minority, but I really hate that they retconned Sith lightsabers such that they are no longer synthetic crystals but instead are normal crystals that were made to "bleed." The original explanation made a lot more sense than the whole "mood lightsaber" thing we're doing now.
100% with you here. And it wasnt like they were just in a shop fabricating them, they had to dive deep into alchemy, often sith alchemy to create them. 10× better than hurting your rocks feelings and making it enter its emo phase
I cant help but flashback to all the times Anakin has lost his lightsaber. "This weapon is your life, Anakin." Is a direct quote from Kenobi. So Anakin was metaphorically struggling to grab hold of his life as he was dying. ... but that's just a theory... a GAAAME theory. Idk i haven't made it more than 19 seconds in yet
I always figured that Obi-Wan believed that Anakin was already dead anyway, but Anakin himself was in so much pain, both at the betrayal of Obi-Wan, as well as dealing with what he had done at the temple, and questioning if Sidious was right, that Anakin wanted to get his lightsaber to kill himself with it, to put an end to the pain.
@@Xyma-YT Watch Qui-Gon's death in Ep.1, then watch Kenobi and Maul's final duel in Rebels. In the latter, Kenobi goes into his traditional Form 3 stance as Maul draws his saber. During a brief pause, he switches from Form 3 to Form 4, the style of choice for Qui-Gon. This was bait to lure Maul in. Afterwards, Maul goes for the same maneuver he used to kill Qui-Gon: stun with his lightsaber hilt to the enemy's head before going for a fatal wound to the gut. This is what Kenobi wants and cuts through Maul's saber while dealing the final blow.
An excellent analysis of that pivotal moment on Mustafar and what it told us about both characters' perspectives at that moment. This is also illustrative of the narrative intricacy that is absent in the more recent films.
nah, it wasn't even him who build it. he had at least 4 as jedi, if I'm not wrong, and just one as a sith lord. it's not like he was mass producing lightsabers. Artisans always recognize their work because they are unique and embroidered with personal sew, it's not something you forget just because - mostly when it was taken from you by your former master.
That is not only poetic but the most accurate way to look at this. People ask what Vader would have been like if he had not burned on mustafar but what you say makes me think Vader would not be Vader without being burned. Vader sabotaged Anakin in that fight with arrogance sealing the his fate to be born as Vader forever. We even see later that it is the pain. Of his body that reminds Anakin of why he embraced the dark side. If Anakin had not burned and had lived on with padame in his life or even without her his love for others would have bled through and he would’ve returned to the light side even without Luke’s help. Now this is pure conjecture but what you said feels right.
Interesting. I never knew that a Lightsaber had actual lore to it. Makes a lot of sense on how you explained it. I really enjoyed learning about this 😊
well duh. This is star wars. It has an army of writers so that even minor props have a backstory. But its not like George Lucas literally was thinking of any of this stuff when he was writing the script like the video seems to think.
Back when I was a little kid, in the time leading up to the release of Revenge of the Sith, a theory had popped up among the fans that I had liked, even if it might bring forth a plot hole. The idea was that while Anakin and Obi-wan where initially dueling, Anakin's lightsaber was blue. However during the duel, they reached a moment where Anakin fully embraced the Dark Side, and as a result Anakin's blade turned red. This would leave a plot hole about when Obi-wan gave it to Luke its blade is blue again, but its an interesting idea.
I know when Ep 2&3 came around, they gave Hayden Christensen a lot of crap about his acting - but the part where he screams: I Hate You! He said it with such conviction - amazing - glad he is finally getting his due.
I like to think that the sith anger was preventing him from dying. The more agony he was in, the more the flames were limited (by the force) to burn. If that’s not the reason for his survival, then why did the flames engulf his body but then ceased to burn?
Thats funny.Anuskin became a Sith that evening and got cut in half same evening LOL. Sold everyone out for power and had it instsntly taken from him!! Awesome.obi wans my favorite
I felt Obi Wans heart break when he said you were my brother anikan I loved you just knowing the pain and suffering Anikan would have to live through you feel the loss of brotherhood ending.
Anakin: 'You underestimate my power!' Obi-wan: 'That's *my* move you're about to try, here's how you counter it.' I agree though with the idea of Obi-Wan wanting to protect at least *some* part of Anakin though. Sure, the saber had been used to rapidly commit serious acts of evil and pain, even though Anakin was far to gone to be redeemed, the saber still could be, in the right hands.
I’ve often wondered if, in the years after, Obiwan might have though about how much suffering he could have prevented if, instead just taking Vader’s light saber and assuming he was finished, he had just had the strength to finish the job and given him a small force shove a few feet into the lava. It certainly would have been just, after what he had done just that day or so. But I guess the stories that came later would not have been as good either.
And that is precisely why ther Jedi are weak. They do not kill, Obi Wan could have saved the whole galaxy of being burned, the whole Jedi order to be executed and destroyed, and the termination of every other Jedis in the Universe, but two. Sometimes, killing is necessary. One cannot prevent the future, but some people who have too much power must be thoroughly and absolutely destroyed. Obliterated. Otherwise, they will seek reveng and eventually destroy you. THis was exactly what happened between Anakin and Obi Wan, Had it been Obi Wan that died that day instead of Qui Gon, Anakin would have never rebelled. Qui Gon failed Obi Wan, as he left the most dumb, unwise and stupid Knight he could have trained.
I love this interpretation. Having readthe Revenge of the Sith audiobook ably read by Jonathan Davies I knew half of this, but it is interesting to hear it from the new born Vader's perspective. One interesting thing I find is that in Episode 4 A New Hope, Luke never uses his light saber against the storm troopers while on the death star, meaning Darth Vader never sees him use it until after the events of this part of the story. Imagine the wave of disbelief if Luke had tried to join the duel between Obi-Wan and Vader, his youthful impulsivity and head strongedness telling him that it was the right thing to do. Would Vader have put it all together then? Seeing the light saber, wielded by the young man who accompanied Obi-Wan? How might that have affected the story.
Anyone else think it's weird that despite how much Palpatine disliked lightsabers all his apprentices placed extreme value on them? I mean even Maul took pride in his double bladed lightsaber, then when he acquired it the Dark saber. Dooku enough said, and Vader when first becoming a Sith clung to Anakin's blade rather ironically.
That has more to do with the Sith code than you might think. An apprentice, in order to become the master, will use any subterfuge or any advantage he could get, in order to bring down his (more) powerful master. Therefore, if a master disdained the lightsaber, the apprentice would naturally put a lot of importance to that weapon, all the while they will learn and try to perfect the powers taught to them by their masters.
@@sombraarthur Are you sure about that? I mean Maul was prideful of what his double bladed lightsaber and then the dark saber represented at the time, Dooku himself was fixated on his lightsaber and his stance since being a Jedi, and Vader if the novelization and the rise of Darth Vader are being followed felt that it was all he had left of his former life as a Jedi.
@@chadflanaganCFC Of course Maul was proud of what his double bladed lightsaber represented, and what the Dark Saber also represented. Still, it does not detract anything from the Sith Code, where the Apprentice would seek any advantage he could muster, in order to defeat his master. The last "teaching" to a Sith Lord was to take his master's place, usurp his power and add to it, as Darth Bane instituted so long ago, before Anakin's time, in the Rule of Two. One to muster the power, one to covet it. And in the clash, only the strongest would survive, making the Sith even more powerful, and an even stronger apprentice needed. Dooku was fixated on the sabers, because he was a duelist, his own personal philosophy relied that "a duel is better to settle disputes and confrontations than wars". Dooku was never the apprentice Sidious wanted, he was bait to push Anakin to kill, and in that, he achieved his master's goals, and the Rule of Two goal as well. Dooku was not even as powerful as Sidious, so, he chose another one who was, and then "initiated" him by killing the old apprentice. That is how a new apprentice was taken, according to the Rule of Two.
I think I should point out that in Legends Lore the Kiber crystals that the Sith used were synthetic, and Star Wars Disney cannon Lore they were Kiber crystals that had been forced to cry or have been bled.
The lightsaber is a scary weapon. It cuts and cauterizes simultaneously so you can dismember your opponent causing immense pain but they can't die of blood loss.
If he left Anakin alive, there was still a chance - however slim - that the Skywalker family could still remain intact and whole. Luke and Anakin at least had a few moments of something like this at the end of ROTJ. I think that's part of what motivated Obi-Wan to leave him alive. In ANH, you see how patient and encouraging he is with Luke; almost the complete opposite of how he was with Anakin. I think he saw his time spent with Luke as almost a way of healing the rift with Anakin.
How anakin thought he was un beatable but he loss not only to obi won but he loss in life to palpertine a slave to evil how he killed women and children as darth vader sworn to protect as anakin skywalker a jedi the very thought of padme always in his mind there is still good in him .
To be fair he is considered one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy and his power was rising by the second as vader if anakin just cleared his mind a bit aka obi wan fights anakin like an hour later he very well could have won
Boy imagine if Anakin bled his lightsaber red instead of killing another Jedi Master in exchange for a new one like he did in the original timeline as Vader post Mustafar
I find it funny that the swing Obi-wan did is called a "forbidden move" when all he did was swing and cut Anakins limbs off. Has a name and everything XD. What's next? He's gonna stab a door like qui gon did and it's a forbidden move called "the force thrust"?
Obi-Wan took away the very thing that was resposible for him losing a good friend when Anikin used it to kill Mace Windu, Jedi and Younglings but failed at using it to kill Obi-Wan. Vader didn't want Luke to grow up to be a Jedi so he could use it to kill him in which Luke succeeded at doing!
Interesting thing also is that in a behind the scenes we also find out that as anakin reaches out he originally asks obi wan to help him which is muted in the film.
I absolutely love Star Wars, I love your channel. I always love hearing the lore between the movies. I have a question though, If I were to start with the books, what's a good one to start with?
Personal recommendation: - Start with Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, by James Lucino. It's a great book, and so long as you've watched the 6 movies that's more than enough a background. I personally read this one first, followed by novelization of episode 4, 5, and 6 when I started reading books. It was an excellent start. - Thus, at some point after Dark Lord, you may wanna read the novelizations of episodes 4, 5, and 6, followed by something else for variety if you would like, followed by novelizations of episodes 1, 2, and 3. You could also alternate, such as novelization of episode 4, some other book; episode 5, some another book,... Other than Dark Lord and the 6 novelizations, you might wanna read early on: - The Thrawn trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command). - Tales of the Jedi & Dark Lords of the Sith (it's two parts of one creation). - Darth Plagueis (I think the novel bears his name as the title?), being the story of Sidious's master. ^^ Those would be my starter recommendations. From there now follow more options for later. Some other interesting books: - Rebel Mission To Ord Mantell, it could go well right before reading the novelization of episode 5. - Shadow of the Empire, it would go great in between the novelizations of episodes 5 and 6. - Labyrinth of Evil could go greatly just before reading the novelization of episode 3. - The Courtship of Princess Leia, it talks about events from sometime after the 6 films. - A few other books: Shatterpoint, Dark Rendezvous, The Approaching Storm, Jedi Trial, Shadow Hunter, Cloak of Deception. Some other trilogies for later on (in no particular order other than the order in which I'm remembering): - The Han Solo trilogy (Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit, Rebel Dawn). - The Clone Wars trilogy (The Clone Wars, Wild Space, No Prisoners). - Dark Forces trilogy (Soldier for the Empire, Rebel Agent, Jedi Knight). - Tales From The Mos Eisley Cantina (We Don't Do Weddings, Nightlily, Hammertong). - Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy (The Mandalorian Armor, Slave Ship, Hard Merchandise). - Dark Empire trilogy (I think the books are simply entitled Dark Empire I, Dark Empire II, and Empire's End). - The Fate of the Jedi trilogy (Outcast, Omen, and Abyss). In short: I would advise, out of these books, to start with Dark Lord The Rise of Darth Vader as your first Star Wars book, and to read the novelizations of the 6 films early on. From then choose any options that call your attention, but consider reading early on the Thrawn trilogy, Tales of the Jedi and Dark Lords of the Sith, as well as Darth Plagueis. This way you have one specific book to start with, followed by the novelizations of the 6 movies, as well as 6 other books to go besides. Hopefully that's a good starter selection without it being too overwhelming to choose. When you're done with those, then you might wanna pick up any of the other books or trilogies I mentioned that may call your attention. I have all of those I mentioned and some others as audiobooks; I'm sure there's also e-books of them all, and hopefully physical copies as well - though some of these might be out of print. (A bird told me that, should anyone need to hear it, there's lots of stuff to be found out in the open seas.) After those initial book recommendations, having had a solid start with good reads, you may also wanna research other books that you may wanna read, as obviously there's more than the ones I mentioned - and I didn't mention no comic books, of which there's many a great one as well. I also can't speak much about the new "canon", most if not all of this is from the Expanded Universe (at least as far as I can remember). I haven't paid much attention to the newer stuff, partly because I still got so much to read from the Expanded Universe. However, if you're into the new stuff, it could perhaps also go well after those initial recommendations. If I were to recommend only one book, I'd suggest you start with Dark Lord The Rise of Darth Vader. Considering not only what video we're commenting on, but the fact that it's an amazing Star Wars book to begin your reading with. Yet ultimately, of course treat these recommendations as guidelines rather than as rules, useful considering as, with how much Star Wars reading material is out there, it can be helpful to have a few select starter options. May the force be with you! :)
He reached for his lightsaber because it was his... I never would have thought of that. Also, if Obi-Wan's main motivation was to take it away so Anakin could not use it as a sith that implies that he knew Anakin was going to survive the lava and become Vader which I don't think was the case. He only just barely survived due to Palpatine's intervention and if Obi-wan knew this I'm pretty sure he'd have force pushed Anakin fully into the lava (which he should have done anyway as a mercy to his friend)
Good question. Perhaps they burnt up? Or just lying around some place? Would be interesting if Sideous had plans to use them to clone another apprentice just in case Anakin did not workout.
I always assumed burned up. Either they rolled down on their own accord. Or Palps being a total prick tossed them in the lava since we know he created the Vader suit to be as painful as possible to constantly humiliate and remind Vader that he lost to someone Palps considered to be an underachiever in an order of weaklings.
He was determined to continue the fight. Obi-Wan was determined to keep Anakin's blade safe from Vader.

That detail is super interesting, would you happen to know where you heard that?
I believe I heard it from another video about how many of the Jedi didn't like how Anakin was practicing more aggressive Lightsaber Forms and his new saber.
Kinda dumb on anakins part considering how frequently he lost his saber
The way they fight is a factor too. Obi-wan is a defensive fighter. Anakin is a very much an offensive fighter.
That made them an amazing team when they fought together during the clone wars.
A sword is a sword. The only difference is what the swordsman does with it. What possible alterations could be made? A laser sword is a laser sword. You expanded universe fans get rather silly with this stuff.
Anakin's thoughts as Obi-wan took his lightsaber: "Are you fucking robbing me!?"
"I'll give it to your son when he's of age"
HIgh ground.

😁😄😃🤗
Oh god.. anakin..
That would drive anyone to the dark side.
This is confirmed. I am Geoge Lucas.
Lmao omg I just realized you're right
Can I enjoy something star wars related without some neckbeard whining about Disney, the sequels, etc?
Anakin: Why are you talking my lightsaber?
ObiWan: For continuity.
Good point 😁🤗
Yet he never uses it in any key battles kinda ironic look at ep 9 bro literally kills himself due to arrogance and not using a saber 🤦🏾♂️
Yeah, but The Rise of Skywalker Movie is just Trash.
This is why Harry Potter isn't an original work; it's just Star Wars with sucky lightsabers
destainful? lol
Obi Wan left him for dead and believed he had died until years later.
@@csguy3223 Actually it was weeks later, when he learned from a pre-recorded hologram news release from Coruscant that Vader was alive and wearing an exoskeleton. He was in an Mos Eisley cantina when it was shown and was horrified to see he somehow survived.

Well, he never had kids after that, so probably
@@younglove3362 Begging for help and then backstabbing seems pretty darkside to me. These are all hypotheticals anyway
i thought he was just trying to crawl away from the fire
@@fu_ck1
Anakin is not going to beg and backstab.
He thought about it but he sensed palpatines prescense getting closer so he opted to let the force decide anakins fate and left.

This one hit me harder than I expected. Thanks man, for putting this into words.

There's cut audio, but you can read his lips and see that he says "help me".
In the novel Obi-Wan won the fight by shorting out the circuitry in Anakin's prosthetic hand causing him to drop the light saber as he came at Obi-Wan
The "I have the high ground" statement was to stop Anakin from wondering why Obi-Wan still had hope of winning.

@@ImFuckinLazy It was a CGI set.
Do not believe this comment. None of this was in the novel.
My headcanon was that even though he was literally on fire and melting, Anakin reached for it because "its his lifeforce" as his Master reminded him all the time, was less about continuing the fight but was more like how they mirrored each other in combat, his Master's lessons were still there.
I’ve always wondered about this. Thank you StupendousWave

Obi-Wan was very hypocritical when he said “Only a sith deals in absolutes”
A part of me believes he was giving Anakin a chance to rebuff him.
All i can think about is how Luke just threw it away in the last jedi. Maybe Lightsaber just get old.
I know that's not how it went down, but a part of me always imagined it to be:
Anakin: "AARGH IT BURNS!! THE PAIN!! MAKE IT STOP! GIVE ME MY LIGHTSABER SO I CAN END THE PAIN!! PLEEEASSEE!!!"
Obi Wan: "lol no, suffer!"
(LOL OBI wan comes back chucks water on him) (anakin:NO THAT IS TOUCHING MY FLESH ARRRGHHHH)
Obi-wan: better pick this up, it’ll be worth big money due to supply chain issues
Thank you ... As a person who is down from jump but did not read the books this helps a lot! These a grand master level life lessons rapped up in Pop Lore.
Lucas actually forgot about Obi wan giving Luke his father’s lightsaber in New Hope and had to go back and reshoot Obi wan picking up Anakin’s saber.
Absolutely beautiful narration.

I always figured that Obi-Wan believed that Anakin was already dead anyway, but Anakin himself was in so much pain, both at the betrayal of Obi-Wan, as well as dealing with what he had done at the temple, and questioning if Sidious was right, that Anakin wanted to get his lightsaber to kill himself with it, to put an end to the pain.
honestly I thought you were gonna tell me he had a special fire extinguisher tool in it

@@ThoraxetheImpaile100 What do u mean "same mistake" ?
I think it would’ve been clever if it was done correctly.
An excellent analysis of that pivotal moment on Mustafar and what it told us about both characters' perspectives at that moment. This is also illustrative of the narrative intricacy that is absent in the more recent films.
People want to hate on the prequels; but as you said the more recent films suck when it comes to cohesiveness.
I wonder if Vader recognized his old saber in Luke's hands in empire strikes back
nah, it wasn't even him who build it. he had at least 4 as jedi, if I'm not wrong, and just one as a sith lord. it's not like he was mass producing lightsabers. Artisans always recognize their work because they are unique and embroidered with personal sew, it's not something you forget just because - mostly when it was taken from you by your former master.
This is so cool... I wish George would have done the sequels..............................................................................
You guys are all overthinking this. Obi-wan thought “well he went bad so if he does live, he needs a red one. Not a blue.”
great video man! thanks for deep diving to bring these ideas to the rest of us. I love the symbolism held within so much of Star Wars
Obi-wan didnt kill Anakin, Vader did.
Now this is pure conjecture but what you said feels right.

I like to think that the sith anger was preventing him from dying. The more agony he was in, the more the flames were limited (by the force) to burn.

I felt Obi Wans heart break when he said you were my brother anikan I loved you just knowing the pain and suffering Anikan would have to live through you feel the loss of brotherhood ending.
Hey I was wondering what the music playing through out the video was? I really like the dark vibe. By the way, great video!
Anakin: 'You underestimate my power!'
Obi-wan: 'That's *my* move you're about to try, here's how you counter it.'
I agree though with the idea of Obi-Wan wanting to protect at least *some* part of Anakin though. Sure, the saber had been used to rapidly commit serious acts of evil and pain, even though Anakin was far to gone to be redeemed, the saber still could be, in the right hands.
In Attack of the Clones, Yoda feels Anakin in pain and suffering, why doesn’t Yoda ask Anakin about what was going on with him???
Yoda was too far into his ketamine addiction at that point sadly😢
Although powerful, Yoda was not a good grand master contrary to popular belief.
THis was exactly what happened between Anakin and Obi Wan,
Had it been Obi Wan that died that day instead of Qui Gon, Anakin would have never rebelled.
Wicked nvr thought of it that way. It makes sense cause even in the movies he would lose it. Good show you made

To be fair he is considered one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy and his power was rising by the second as vader if anakin just cleared his mind a bit aka obi wan fights anakin like an hour later he very well could have won
@@PhoenixDawnX77😂😂😂😂😂
Boy imagine if Anakin bled his lightsaber red instead of killing another Jedi Master in exchange for a new one like he did in the original timeline as Vader post Mustafar
I find it funny that the swing Obi-wan did is called a "forbidden move" when all he did was swing and cut Anakins limbs off. Has a name and everything XD. What's next? He's gonna stab a door like qui gon did and it's a forbidden move called "the force thrust"?
No the forbidden move is what anakin tried to do the forbidden move is what obi used on darth
Anakin was the Black Knight from Monty Python's Holy Grail movie!😂
It’s obvious that he was going to bleed the crystal in the lightsaber
Obi-Wan took away the very thing that was resposible for him losing a good friend when Anikin used it to kill Mace Windu, Jedi and Younglings but failed at using it to kill Obi-Wan. Vader didn't want Luke to grow up to be a Jedi so he could use it to kill him in which Luke succeeded at doing!
Great Video
In that situation rage is the only thing that would keep you moving and conscious.
Let's not forget that Anakin tried to abuse a Jedi move to take down Obiwan, and Obiwan used a Sith move to take out Anakin.
Obi-wan to Luke - "I have something for you. Your father wanted you to have them"
Hands Luke, Anakin's legs and hand
Interesting thing also is that in a behind the scenes we also find out that as anakin reaches out he originally asks obi wan to help him which is muted in the film.
Luckily, he kept it for Luke and didn't sell it on Forcebook Marketplace.
Lol
Lame .
I absolutely love Star Wars, I love your channel. I always love hearing the lore between the movies. I have a question though, If I were to start with the books, what's a good one to start with?
Personal recommendation:
- Start with Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, by James Lucino.
Other than Dark Lord and the 6 novelizations, you might wanna read early on:
- The Thrawn trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command).
- Tales of the Jedi & Dark Lords of the Sith (it's two parts of one creation).
- Darth Plagueis (I think the novel bears his name as the title?), being the story of Sidious's master.
^^ Those would be my starter recommendations. From there now follow more options for later.
Some other interesting books:
- Rebel Mission To Ord Mantell, it could go well right before reading the novelization of episode 5.
Some other trilogies for later on (in no particular order other than the order in which I'm remembering):
- The Han Solo trilogy (Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit, Rebel Dawn).
(A bird told me that, should anyone need to hear it, there's lots of stuff to be found out in the open seas.)
After those initial book recommendations, having had a solid start with good reads, you may also wanna research other books that you may wanna read, as obviously there's more than the ones I mentioned - and I didn't mention no comic books, of which there's many a great one as well.
The real question, where are Anakins discarded limbs?
Good question. Perhaps they burnt up? Or just lying around some place? Would be interesting if Sideous had plans to use them to clone another apprentice just in case Anakin did not workout.
I always assumed burned up.
Either they rolled down on their own accord.
Or Palps being a total prick tossed them in the lava since we know he created the Vader suit to be as painful as possible to constantly humiliate and remind Vader that he lost to someone Palps considered to be an underachiever in an order of weaklings.
Obi-Wan took them in case Luke ever lost any but died before he could show Luke
They fell in the lave when cut off
@@spartanxdarth201 or did they?
He was enraged and in terrible pain. The lightsaber was something to focus on. Either reach for that lightsaber or just start crying.
