  • It is perhaps the question most commonly asked of psychologists: "Do you know what I'm thinking?"
    So, do they?
    This video features in order of appearance: Deborah Talmi, Penny Lewis, Luke Jones, Warren Mansell, Ellen Poliakoff and Daniela Montaldi.

    I'm really liking the new channel. I briefly considered taking a psychology major a while back, and I still find the topic extremely interesting.
    Hopefully this channel gets up there with your others, I'd very much like to see more!

    I love when you get to know people really well to the extent that you can predict what they will be thinking as a result of something that's happened or been said.
    It takes years but I'm at the stage with some of my friends and family members where I can impress them by telling them what they are thinking :)

    Glad you did this so early. I'm just a Psychology major in my third year, and it's become the most bothersome question I've had to pretend to answer frequently.
    In most people who ask it, you can see the insecurity or fear of what they are really thinking, which makes me all the more turned off to the actual person. -.-

    Love your vids, Brady! But do people really ask a psychologist, "Do you know what I'm thinking?"
    I'm curious, not trolling. Such an odd question to a person that's trained/taught to be perceptive beyond normal, so to speak.
    I've never asked my psychologist this - but instead asked, "What do you think about what I've said, can you offer an unobjective perspective?"
    LOVE psychology! LOVE LOVE LOVE!

    It's not a barrage at all. Very valid questions.
    I'm not sure I follow what you mean by deeper meaning, but yes we have to define what makes science a "science". I would think that math and economics are types of science.
    I'm not saying human behavior is independent of the chemicals in our brains. However, I believe that is exactly what Psychology aims to study; our brain chemistry, how our brain affects our body and how our environment affects both. These are measurable things.

    I vote for computer science. Sure some of it falls under Numberphile, but algorithms and such would be interesting topics, even some basics of computational complexity. Cellular automata, Turing machines being universal, how search engines work so fast, lots of good topics there.

  • @jack91x
    @jack91x 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Economics is actually a science, since you are using the scientific process. Ask a company like Intech, which invests based entirely on mathematical algorithms. You can change variables (by investing, shorting, etc), you have a control group (any economic base which you are not involved in) etc. Most successful economists are actually mathematicians, computer programmers, statisticians, etc., so the overlap is pretty prevalent.

  • @MrMielke
    @MrMielke 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    How would you define "What I'm thinking"? Yes, there are times (especially when talking or writing) when there are well defined words, but most of the time it's a jumble of emotions and complex images that are too abstract to really be defined.

    It could be. There's a lot of people who think that 'empathy' is some kind of supernatural ESP. I had someone scoff at me for even mentioning it as part of an explanation for why yawning is contagious. There is a prevailing ignorance about psychology that is mixed up with pop culture mythology.
    It probably doesn't help that people like Darren Brown (despite being a skeptic himself) give people the impression that psychology is capable of apparently magical feats.

    Of course it's a science. There is still a scientific method involved in Psychology; the only difference is that the conclusions reached aren't 100% accurate. You can't quantify human experience into an equation like you can with other sciences. The results are statistical probabilities.
    It has to be one of the more difficult sciences too. In Chemistry when you add specific things together you'll get the same chemical every time - Psychology is Chemistry + human behavior.
