The World's Most Important Beer Cooler

- Hidden away in a lab near Oxford is a beer cooler which plays an important role in weather forecasting and measuring climate change. The modified cooler is used to calibrate sea surface temperature instruments, ultimately feeding into observations made from space.

God I love you Brady you bring so many of these wonderful videos to the world its astounding. If every university had a Brady Haran the world would be a much better place :)
good to hear!
Anything to do with beer immediately gets my attention
That's just how the instrument is calibrated, so it gives the right temperature. After the beer cooler bit it's strapped on the side of the ship to measure the sea.
Randomly stumble upon another of Brady's channel!
It's a readily available, cheap, insulated waterproof box, that's very easy to modify.
Brady keep up the amazing work :). I'm subscribed to a lot of your channels, and I enjoyed randomly finding another channel of yours. It's awesome you have a science based channel, so I would like to thank you for it and god bless. O and If you can it would be really cool if talked about dark and anti matter I do not understand it, thank you.
When periodictables favorites, its definitely science!
It's a beer cooler with a different purpose, but without being filled with beer this cooler will never have truly lived. :'(
Ah! I was thinking that it was the actual instrument used to measure the temperature rather than an instrument to calibrate the other. I wasn't paying enough attention; he explains exactly that at the beginning. oops.
Thanks.
that is a very good question.
I had this Video in my recommended videos, and the word "cooler" was cut off, so the titel said "The World's Most Important Beer" xD
interesting Video though.
I don't think he explained how the instrument in the Queen Mary is set up, at least, I didn't understand it.
It sounds like they flood the beer cooler with water, keep it at a fixed temperature and then calibrate it or measure it. How does that measure the sea temperature outside the QM?
I think I missed a bit!
FINALLY Brady you found a really handsome devil to feature!
I love how high-tech can meet everyday-tech :3
you have to do something on the higgs!!!!!!
watch first 5 seconds without looking LOL
But... Where do they keep the beer!?
"It is a beer cooler that we've actually modified for use in measuring science!" What scale does it use? Is it measured in safety goggles and white coats?
couldn't you use some kind of phase change to keep a standard temperature? maybe the temperature of ice melting in a water bath at 1 bar or something like that? it seems kind of convoluted making an active device that keeps the temperature uniform and then measuring that with the calibratee rather than use simple physics to do the hard work for you...
Is this lab part of Aperture Science?
"Measuring Science" XD
"for use in measuring science."
It's used to measure science!
1 degree or 1.2 degrees, ha ha how imaginative. 5:23 .
this screams grad student project.
gigo - Garbage in garbage out, may bore some but good video ,i would have thought they would use some item that has a known exact temprature to check , liqiod nitrogen or something? guess that may vary too im not super smart like these guys
and what's wrong with that? grad students are scientists just as much as the professors who teach them.
Øl er vigtigt for os danskere :D
Cute guy
