The skit at the beginning was fantastic, but for me the breakdown of the industry at the beginning was truly fascinating I know videos about the comic business don't usually do well but I'd love to see a Sal explains pivotal comic book decisions and how they impacted the industry. Kind of like a sister show to back issues.
@Jarred Kiser a whole episode of sal discussing the 90s antihero boom would be exquisite I know if you watch enough of their videos you can put it together but oh my how good would it be to listen to sal as a comic book historian.
I’m 26 minutes in and Sal is about to reveal WHY Onslaught was created and holy shit it’s like a documentary I never knew existed but it’s plot HAS to be told. It is literally why comic book events and creative talent are forever intertwined with marketing and sales, it’s the reason things are fucked for comic book fans forever lol. The best episode of Back Issues so far, congratulations to the entire team on 400 incredible episodes and thanks for telling this very important story of one of the least important comic book events ever.
I loved everything about this episode but either having more back issues in this format or a new show that is talking about comic books and their context around their making would be INCREDIBLE!
I love the collective reaction once Sal says "A part of magneto" like he didn't even finish the statement and the reaction they all gave was pure gold.
Well that's a scary thought. now I'm wondering what future writer is reading a terrible concept now taking notes from it so they can do a better story on their own later
This is one of my favourite episodes. Sal took a storyline that most people don't care about anymore and turn It into a fascinating history lesson about the comic book industry.
Great episode as always! I don’t know about anyone else but I’m always fascinated by how Sal describes the comic industry, it’s key players, and it’s state (like in the spawn episode for the creation of image, the maxx episode for context on Sam Keith’s ethos, and just random tidbits in different episodes). It provides valuable meta-context for why something as wild as Onslaught was allowed to be a thing. Congrats on the 400th, can’t wait to see what’s in store.
Happy 400-ish?!! That was the best opening in back issues. Watching Ethan try not to break character was hilarious. Also Ethan should play Reed Richards.
You’ve talked about The Clone Saga, now Onslaught (twice), now all that’s left is to do Age of Apocalypse. After that, you will all complete the unholy trinity of 90’s Marvel comics “Epics”.
onslaught saga was pretty cool, Age of apocalypse is arguably one of the better stories in comics and helped save marvel since everything but xmen were doing bad at the time
First off, congratulations on reaching 400 episodes of Back-issues. Secondly, this is probably one of my favorite episodes you’ve ever done. As someone who went to business school for 4+ years, I’m tracking EVERYTHING your explaining, and it’s blowing my mind.
Next up, Age of Apocalypse😆👍 Also that intro tho, the closest we'll get to a "Physical With Ethan" look Also this is the first story done twice in this series
I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion about the real life mechanics and the state of the comic industry that led to Onslaught. Really interesting stuff. And as usual Sal’s enthusiasm really shines through. Good on ya bud! Here’s to another 400!
Congrats people! I don't usually comment on any video on this site, but I wanna take the oportunity to thank you for the hours of entertainment and insight that you bring every week. I've been watching since All Star B&R and have been a part of my weekly routine since, and I don't see any reason to change it. Sincerly, an Argentinian fan. Cheers
Cutting off the Waid Cap run was awful....but let's face it, the other books were a mess. We had the "Teen Tony" thing, the Avengers were rough, Thor was baffling and FF still recovering from the too-long "Reed is dead" arc. If nothing else, thanks to Heroes Reborn, we got revival of Busiek on Avengers and Iron Man, Jurgens' Thor and others so they did need something to change things, they just went too far.
Agreed. Honestly, Jurgen's run on Thor is one of my favorites of all time. The Busiek run on Avengers was pretty amazing too. The Onslaught Saga was ridiculous, and even as it was being released, I thought it made no sense and was filled with ridiculous plot holes and contrivances, but I guess some house cleaning was in order at Marvel.
Quite possibly my fave episode now due to the meta commentary that Onslaught represents to the current era of comic, publications and economy. Just solid. Also, that Franklin Richards theory, and that mephisto idea, damn, that’s a wild one.
You know you’ve been watching comic pop for a long time when they do an opening sketch and you get nostalgia for the early episodes lol Also Ethan did a pretty good job playing the Architect, he has really good comedic timing
Sal everyone is talking about 400 episodes. But Sal thank you. Thank you. For explaining the X-Men event that I can't be bothered reading, but everyone keeps bringing up.
I’m now imagining Scott Loddel as the Monorail Guy from The Simpsons “Let me tell you bout a guy named Onslaught” “Who’s that” “Onslaught“ “WOW” “Onslaught you say” “ONSLAUGHT, ONSLAUGHT, ONSLAAAAAAUUUUUUGHT”
Ethan: I didn’t create Frogger, but I came up with the name for it… Can you believe they wanted to name it “Highway Crossing Frog”? …I know, it’s the lamest thing I’ve ever heard 😑
What a beautiful episode y'all. I've been watching since 2015 and pretty much every back issues episode is a gem. Can't believe how underrated your work is. Seriously.
I was just watching the old onslaught episode the other day and was thinking it’d be great to revisit it. Love the opening skit too! Keep being awesome guys!
So Onslaught is kind of a child of Prof X and Magneto. Which makes Ways of X more interesting since Legion, who is himself Charle's neglected son dealing with Onslaught.
One of the things I love about this show, is that they are constantly out doing themselves. So many times before I decreed pass episodes as their Magnum Opus... Episodes like Bendis Superman, HOX & POX, Coming of Galactus, Sword Of X... Each one out doing the one before... We again have a new Opus De Magnum... I have watched this episode at least 6 times, only came out a week ago. The skirt at the beginning deserves an Emmy nom. The industry breakdown is the greatest conversation of the post internet Era. Then the adventure through Onslaught itself was just the cherry on top of this caramel sundae in the form of a TH-cam vid. BRILLIANT!!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Absolutely fantastic episode! So glad ya'll made it to 400 episodes. I adore these episodes where you talk about the real life history behind a book. Always super interesting to hear about, the Spawn episode that's similar to this is one of my all time favorites. Please do more dumb sketch content and implement it into your other shows. That was so funny.
This episode is amazing! I've been hoping you would do Onslaught for years, and it's everything I ever hoped for. Some absolutely fantastic reactions from Tiffany starting at about the hour mark. I was sold at the opening sketch. Sorry you had to do this so may times over, but as the saying goes, third time's the charm. Eagerly awaiting Age of Apocalypse
400 episodes of Back Issues is seriously an amazing achievement! Congrats to everyone and thank you for all the passion and effort you put forth for us!
The history of Onslaught is a fucking roller-coaster and the behind the scenes of it is so much more interesting than the story itself. It ends up becoming a piece of metafiction about the flaws and failures of 90s comics. You have these huge massive scale epics that focus on these huge villains with big cool edgy designs and just how ultimately world endingly powerful but how That the Systems that brought about onslaught were also the systems that both on a meta and litteral sense could've ended the marvel universe as a whole. And how the heroes are fighting tooth and nail to if not able to save the marvel universe, do whatever they can with whatever they have left.
Happy 400 COMIC POP! I've spent hours watching and re-watching your shows, you're not just my favorite comic channel, you're my favorite channel on the whole damn site! Thank you for all the fun and entertainment, and I can't wait to see what you do next!
I couldn't ask for a better milestone episode for this series: skit intro, backdrop of Marvel's business dealings in the 90s, X-title during the peak of my comic reading time growing up... perfection. Thank you, and congrats (a year later)!
Happy 400 episodes!!!!! I’ve been watching this channel almost everyday for about 5 years or so, absolutely love each and everyone of you, and here’s to 100k!!!!!
Loved the opening skit! Happy 400, guys! Thanks for all the episodes, and here's to many more! Wednesday is my "Monday" at work, and this helps me look forward to Wednesday every week!
I put this episode on the background while doing chores and had to stop doing them just to focus on what Sal was saying. Incredible industry breakdown.
Happy 400! Can't wait for what the future holds and the next 400 episodes of Back Issues. That intro had me wondering if we could ever see The Matrix comics on back issues or GBU. Opening was hilarious and awesome. Keep up the good work. Third time's a charm!
Just found your channel and love this video! I was a teen in the 90s and Age of Apocalypse was so fun, then they followed it up with Onslaught and it killed my love of collecting comics, it was just so terrible. Loved the history of Marvel as well, great content!

I wouldn't mine that either. I loved their things about image and stacked and their thoughts on it.
Hear, hear! The story of how Perleman screwed over the industry was infinitely more interesting than the superhero book itself!
@@jonfedien8637 He kinda delved into it in the Bloodlines episode.
I find it so interesting it's the first back issues I watched back to back just so I could absorb it all
That opening skit was pure gold. Happy 400 episodes, ComicPOP! Here's to 400 more!
I would honestly love a "back issues" that's just 1 or 2 hours of Marvel's internal politics through the 90s
Please! I would pay hard earned money to see that.
Crowbar
"You wanna read it, its Wizard 56" that is the biggest callout that I'v ever seen on this show. Like WOW going for the juggular. A+
It wouldn’t be a momentous back issues without the “some part imprinted” line and a langoliers reference. This is a special one.
The only thing missing was the ridiculously circuitous scheme. Haven't heard that one in a while 😅
@@WhelmedButReady these are somehow some of my best my childhood memories

Ethan is a chilling villain. He also used the word "concordantly" in a sentence so that's cool as well.
I love the collective reaction once Sal says "A part of magneto" like he didn't even finish the statement and the reaction they all gave was pure gold.
I'm so sorry so many of you are so focused on the Bishop element. Hopefully many of you got a lot out of this episode!
Fuechah!
Comic Pop’s New Series Sal Overexplains the Comic Universe: a series where Sal blends the real world with the comic world to tell the WHOLE story.
It's called back issues
