I bought this issue when it came out in 1980. I was expecting an incredible villain, an epic battle, maybe an incredible revelation about the Avengers. I got a third of that. It turns out the revelation was that the Avengers are jerks and crappy teammates. Actually, I still have that issue, I read it and put it in a box where it has sat forgotten for decades until now.
I love how you put so much emphasis on Carol constantly saying this was weird. When I first read this comic, I was too distracted, by everyone in the avengers acting so drastically out of character. For god sakes Hank Pym and Hank Mccoy are scientists, and Donald Blake is a skilled doctor. Why are they giving Carol pats on the back and supporting this? They should be questioning EVERYTHING?
The mixture of Sal's Batman voice and the zooming in on a picture of Batman at 20:15 just draws a chuckle from me everytime. I don't know why, but it does

I believe Carol left the X-Men because they let Rogue join the team. She still held a grudge against Rogue for stealing her powers. I think Carol held that grudge even after getting her powers back.
I mean for good reason too, rogue not only took her powers she also left her in a coma and when she woke up she finds out she lost all her memories as well. I mean she gets better but I would definitely feel a bit resentful to her too
I liked Carol with the X-Men honestly, but yeah she ended up leaving after the Brood Saga where she became Binary and decided to be a space hero. Also, if I am not mistaken the reason Carol was saved by Spider-Woman was because Rogue had JUST absorbed her powers so she can go save the Brotherhood.

It's moments like these that make me happy as fuck they didn't force her into an era of the MCU when Whedon and Perlmutter were involved with her canceled debut: AOU. It seems the MCU wants to pick up her pieces after Civil War 2 and other terrible moments and do something better (like Iron Man after Civil War, conveniently)

I applaud your courage for tackling this weird ass book. I'd like to point out that Hawkeye was pretty much the only sane Avenger in this story. It's kinda weird if you think about how he acts in this story and how Bendis writes Hawkeye in events, especially if you take into account that his treatment of certain characters is based around stories he read and enjoyed like Doomquest.
Ok so “The baby grew into a toddler before my very eyes and is now trying to talk” could work GREAT for a horror story with better writing. Unfortunately “better writing” is nowhere within light years of this story.
It almost makes hank slapping her seem like a justifiable action, like why do the avengers remember him smacking her one time in a moment where he was mentally unstable, but not all the times she caused friction and issues with the other female team members.Some of which leads to massive destructive forces.
