Ok, since Sal didn’t mention it at the beginning, I’m gonna assume he doesn’t mention it, but this book didn’t come along to interrupt the current X-Men run, it came to save it.
At this point, X-Men was a Z-Tier book at Marvel and was literally just reprints at this point. Then they decided “Let’s relaunch it” and out came Giant Size X-Men

The name is based on the ability of cyclopes to shoot death rays from their eyes that nobody ever remembers. I suppose using an obscure and only partially applicable reference to classical mythology is going to confuse people both in-and out of universe. I imagine in 616 the top google searches for cyclops is asking about how many eyes he has and what his name means.aaaaa

Apparently, before this, Wolverine was meant to be around the same age as Scott, Jean, and the others ie late teens/young adult. However, the artist didn’t get the memo, and he was drawn looking older when he unmasked, and they stick with it, eventually giving him the long lived backstory.
The "codename " conversation got me. Especially 'Kurt' making sense of it.

Breaking the seal on Giant-sized x-men is how you get pint-sized x-men. Seal it up kids.
There's also a third retcon where Logan was going to kill Xavier, but he actually DOES get mind whammed to join the team instead. There are also some earlier stories where Xavier mind wipes plenty of people in the first 60 issues. he has NEVER been an innocent.
Krakoa is basically a Kaiju. Who needs the X-Men when a Jaegar or Megazord could do the job

I remember when my Dad got me the INTERACTIVE CD ROM back in the 90s. It had this story and the relevant backstory issues to each of the new characters on it, all of which were narrated by the 90s TAS wolverine and uses the intro theme when the main menu first appears.

Any chance you guys will do a Back Issues on Grant Morrison's X-Men run? I remember when you did Back Issues for Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run, you brought up Morrison's run since Whedon's run continues from there
Always fun to get an X-Men book on Back Issues--especially a classic. Still holding out for the eventual Age of Apocalypse episode (good luck!), or some of Morrison's run
One of my favorite X-men comics of all. Considering how there were rumors that the MCU is trying to find a more diverse cast for the X-men, I hope they take some inspirations from this comics, specially the x-men battle against Krakoa, who in my opinion is one of the characters that, much like Mr Sinister, has a lot of potential that could be explored in a movie or series, specially now that Krakoa is very important in the Jonathan Hickman's run.
As a massive Xmen fan I 100% agree that Xavier is a straight up monster

People always talk about God Loves Man Kills and the Dark Phoenix saga, but Giant Size Xmen was better. Xavier absolutely is a monster, always has been. Jean and Erik were the only ones to ever notice; eventually, Scott figured it out as well. This is also timely since Sinister with the mutant gene is suspected to have the cells of Thunderbird, who if you follow Xmen over the years, they imply that his powers would have developed to make him a tank. His younger brother has the same power set; People always talk about God Loves Man Kills and the Dark Phoenix saga, but Giant Size Xmen was better. Xavier absolutely is a monster, always has been. Jean and Erik were the only ones to ever notice; eventually, Scott figured it out as well. This is also timely since Sinister with the mutant gene is suspected to have the cells of Thunderbird, who if you've followed Xmen over the years, they kinda let you know that his powers would have developed to make him another tank for the roster. His younger brother James (Warpath) has heightened senses, enhanced speed, agility, endurance and bear invulnerability. Cable always said he had crazy potential.
Back to Xavier. He's a monster for good reason, his mind is strong enough that it made contact with a consciousness across the galaxy, shit like that messes you up or so I've heard lol. Not only that but his powers fully manifest while he was in a warzone and the thoughts, feelings and last moments of thousands of men folded in on him at once and he had to rework his mind to adjust. I've always felt that Charles has this impenetrable layer of disassociation about him.

@@shiningnight12 I believe that's the first time his powers switched on, but the first time he was really like immersed in being a telepath was during a war if im not mistaken. He explained it to Jean and I think she explained it during Onslaught?

I've never understood why Scott realized Xavier was a bad person, so he decided to also be a bad person. I haven't read any xmen since Hickman started, and even the back issue was to complicated for me while I was working, so maybe Scott has finally been fixed, but he was a fucking dick for at least half of the last decade.

I love the Charles Xavier, Inhuman Monster theory because it's the result of all these writers trying to challenge his perfect paragon image by having him be a right bastard every couple years...over 60 years of continuity.

There is also a retcon that Wolverine was sent to take out Professor X, but Charles mind wipes the incident and makes him think he chose to join the X-Men.

@Shootblade@@thoarnejones6805 The Retcon in 616 was that Xavier needed and wanted a Killer for the Team and knew of Wolverines abilities he coaxes him to join the X-Men after explaining that he could help him with his missing memories and that with the X-Men they would be straight with him. While he does help in that sense it was no longer about helping Wolverine but ensuring the team had a member who could get the job done when it required to not be nice. In that sense Xavier is no better than Sinister Weapon X or Alpha Flight since they all used Wolverine because of what he could do not that any of them actually cared about him. Though I think this changes when Xavier actually sees what Wolverine was put through and has moments of regret for being untruthful. Specially in stories like Fatal Attractions or The Twelve.
But @Shootblade is correct Department H does send Wolverine as a covert mission to befriend and then assassinate Xavier because they feared him being to powerful. The moment they are alone Chuck ends up reading Wolverines mind and then taking a chunk of memories as well. When House of M happens and Wolverine gains certain memories back not just the conditioned falsified ones he no longer cares of what Xavier did and why but that he is a better person because of it even if it had all been shady from the get go.
