Funnily enough, Batman actually grows quite fond of Kyle Rayner (my favorite GL) because Rayner is willing to learn other skills (like hand-to-hand). I like that Johns doesn't invalid Kyle when hyping up Hal. Kyle is young and inexperienced, which is why he lost to Sinestro, not because he is less worthy or inferior to Hal.
noted. years ago I tried jumping in with blackest night. I was suuuuper confused despite moments I thought were cool. it was like 'OH SHIT! THERE'S A PURPLE AND BLUE AND EVEN RED LANTERN CORPS. WHAT HAVE I BETWEEN MISSING OUT ON AND WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY REFERENCING?!'
darique warren something with me, well I got into the Green Lantern mythos thanks to the animated series, then I researched the other corps and I was automatically hooked, Blackest Night was my first GL story that I read and then I retraced by reading Sinestro Coprs War and from there I moved forward
So excited for this one. Pre-Flashpoint Alan Scott was an Honorary Member of the Green Lantern Corp. Parallax tries repeatedly to corrupt Alan Scott because it doesn't understand the difference between them. There was a story that explained that the Starheart was the result of Guardians collecting and isolating most of the magic forces in the universe.
I know I wasn't reading GL back then and all but hearing and kind of reading some of Hal Jordan's Parallax stuff from back in the day made me think that DC missed a huge opportunity to make Hal Jordan a massive successful sympathetic villain ! Hear me out, Hal Jordan at the time was a guy who joined into a huge galactic organization which is run by a circle of seemingly emotionless beings, he also so happened to be a heck of a pilot; he eventually became the most famous out of his colleagues and seemingly the most powerful but one day tragedy strikes and it was so much for him that he tried everything he can to stop people from dying and ends up killing the whole order that took him in in the first place. Sound familiar? It should seeing as that's the same story as DARTH VADER! Yes I believe Hal Jordan as Parallax could've been DC's Darth Vader. With a little tweaks here and there I think it would've been awesome. I mean Kyle Rayner was practically Luke Skywalker when he first started.
DC's Luke Skywalker is Orion. Hal is too important to be turned into villain for too long. Only reason parallax stuff happened cause his comics weren't selling.
i am happy i sent you Green Lantern Rebirth for the package i sent you. the other 3 books i put in it are great reads too. hope to see those on back issues at some point. i am glad you got to share and enjoy it again.
i actually started reading green lantern right in the midst of that story arc where coast city was destroyed. i thought it was pretty cool yet fucked up, especially when hal went through the corps and took their rings for more firepower. that fight with kiliwog gripped my heart cuz i didn't think he would do it(glad the poozer came back to life) and that fight with sinestro was just fucking awesome, especially the climax. ALSO something i wasn't certain hal would do. i enjoyed the parallax arc up until he became the spectre too. good review sal.
not to point a flaw, but you mentioned that green lanterns are no longer susceptible to the Parallax impurity, but Rookies still are and have to learn to overcome it
This is definitely one of my favorite GL stories. I remember getting my first copy of Green Lantern signed by Geoff at WonderCon 06,first con I ever attended. Great times.
Personally I don't really like the story. Like it's interesting to see Barry reflect on being dead and seeing how life moves on and how to cope with todays world but I just think overall the story is kind of dumb. Plus I'm more of a Wally guy.
yeah I really like Wally, he is my second favorite flash, but something with Barry just made me like him so much. I personally love the story I think it has great Art and a great plot. But it's your opinion and I completely respect that.
I'm so glad you guys covered this book! Keep up the great work and congrats for reaching 40k subscribers! You guys deserve hundreds of thousands of subs...
Just picked this up today as my starting point for Green Lantern. The beginning is a brick wall but once Guy explains Hal to Green Arrow the story becomes super clear. Glad they sum up all the continuity relatively well by mid point
I had never really read any Green Lantern and bought the 1st omnibus, which this is in, and the whole dam thing is just great. I was surprised at how fast I read that big ass book. Couldn't put it down
Alan Scott was an Honorary member of the GLC, and very close close friends with Hal, John and Guy. Then his own Daughter dated Kyle, who he later also befriended. Alan Scott wasn't unrelated. Dude was watching an old friend of his come back to life to correct his mistakes surrounded by other old friends
Its weird because if you read Kyles Green Lantern and Hals Spectre. The Guardians, Killowog, the Power Battery and Sinestro had all ,all ready returned.
You guys should do 52 or maybe another story with The Question in it he seems really cool and it would be interesting to hear about something he is in. Keep up the great work guys!
This book and all that John's has follow.... Is my favorite storyline/mythology in comics- all during my favorite era in comics(Post-Crisis/Modern Bronze Age).
you guys almost lost me but now your back with a vengence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It seems when something new comes along that feels right, they go back to the classics. It was like Spiderman...I always love the black costume ...alot ppl did but ppl still wanted the classic Spidey and now we have classic Spidey and venom... Hal Jordan kinda was the same ...I really loved Kyle Rayner but Hal came back. I still love Hal Jordan even the one storyline of Hal going mad .
I really like this book. The only thing that bothered me a little bit, being a big fan of Grant Morrison's JLA and how powerful Kyle was by the end of that run, was how easily Sinestro beat Kyle. So much for Dream of the Endless telling Kyle he'll surpass Hal...
Dead Lanterns are actually not dead, Geoff Johns brought them back (and most of them died later). He totally redeemed Hal Jordan. His Green Lantern run is retcon heavy but good until Brightest Day in my opinion. His retcons really stretched especially I'm not fan of Guardians are evil idea.
So as epic as the Johns Gl run got, I must say that I prefer Annihilation. As much work as they went into to make the other corps a threat, Annihilus and his swarms just worked more for me. Also annihilation didn't have the issue of most problems being solved by anyone just wanting to win more, so their willpower overpowered say greed or even pure rage.
To be honest, he has one of the easier continuities to follow. Basically Every major X-men event revolves around him in some way so just stick to those.
What I'm getting at is that Cyclops throughout his entire continuity is pretty much an asshole, no matter how you spin it, even in his early days. No amount of retconning is gonna absolve him of the terrible shit he's done lol
lol, I never noticed Guy Gardner looking at Hal knock Batman out in the image at 37:35. For those who didn't read Justice League back in the day, that's a call-back to this. fwpodcasts.com/sm/images/jli05_07.jpg 66.media.tumblr.com/e623f37aab55d0f98e856fa993e5cc96/tumblr_nu9aa31Jdd1sbqrlmo2_1280.jpg
I am currently reading the Johns GL run for the first time, and I am up to Blackest night. That being said, I think rebirth is probably the best written Johns story I have read. I haven't cared for alot of what I read from him, but GL rebirth was alot of fun. I still dont really like Hal as a character, and I have begun to accept that I just wont. Guy is the Lantern for me, although Gleason and Tomasi did great work with really all the lanterns they ran with in corp. Also I am really annoyed by what Johns did with Carol. Hal smiles at her once and she drops her life and her husband to watch him go on dates with Cowgirl.
+Ian McKee Hal and Guy are kind of similar, they are both cocky, arrogant, womanazing, demeaning, don't follow the rules, show-off and had brushes with the darkside (Parallax and Red Lantern). The only difference is that Guy is usually called out for his behavior all the time, whereas Hal is somehow repeatedly referred to as "The Greatest of Green Lanterns" for it.
spiderbatman97 My favorite example of that is during Godhead. Guy and Simon fought a long campaign against New Genesis, all the while Hal just kind of sits there being in charge and freaking ut since there sint anyone to hail against since hes in charge. His leadership gets a squadron of Lanterns killed in a pointless fight against Orion and his guard at the source wall. Then he shows up at the end, calls Highfather a fascist, and trys to hold up the city. Then Highfather calls him the greatest lantern ever for no clear reason.
spiderbatman97 It would appear your response was marked as spam or something. Wonder if a group of Jordan loyalists downvoted you or something. I like Guy the most because while he can be a bragger and mouthy, he has some personality beyond charging in and overcoming the results of your horrible planning, which is most of Hal's characterization. I cant see Jordan in charge working out, I mean he stole the gauntlet and ran away to"save their reputation" but I'm convinced he ran because you cant be a renegade, sticking it to the man when you sit in the big chair.
Ian McKee Damn, i knew that they were around, no place is safe. I like Guy too, he is a crazy ashole in fun kind of way, i love what Tomasi did with him in Green Lantern Corps, but as i say i don't really have like a favorite in the Green Lantern (now my favorite Lantern would be Dex-Star, even when he is evil), the rest of the cast are just ok, i just found Hal annoying because he is an idiot and Jonhs try really hard to convince you that he is "The Greatest", i like the franchise mostly for his Space Opera stuff. Now a real badass and space cop would be Richard Rider.
spiderbatman97 Yeah, while I would say Rebirth mostly avoided this pitfall, but later on it seems that hal is the only lantern who matters. espically since his whole thing is questioning authority and overcoming, but with guy, Kyle, and John all mostly learning the same lessons alot is taken away from that. That is a pitfall in most of Johns run that I've read. TO make Hal seem so much better, the guardians are reduced to be so cartoonishly out of touch and irrational, it a miracle they made it past the first century of their stewardship of the cosmos, let alone the billions of yrs they've been at it. Would have been nice to have a story-line where Hal's arrogance and brashness gets him captured and a bunch of his fellows killed, and hes saved only after Guy and Kyle come in under orders and with a proper plan. Hell, Hal getting a bunch of his comrades killed due to incompetence and disobeying orders, being stripped of his ring, and going nuts after Sinestro comes a calling with a fear ring would make for a much better emerald twilight.
Pick up Green Lantern Rebirth here: amzn.to/2c6Md6e
*"Smart Michael Bay is James Cameron"*
Quote of the fucking Century man.
Later on in Geoff Johns' run it's revealed that the Green Lanterns do in fact have a space bar/cafe on Oa where they kick back and take breaks
Hal Jordan is and always will be my favorite Green Lantern and all around DC character.
Try telling that to DC nowadays.
Kyle is probably my least favorite Lantern of Earth but admittedly he's fun to read about. I just prefer Guy over all other Lanterns.
The scars Sinestro got on his back in that fight with Hal and Kyle are still there in the Sinestro book. Great, subtle continuity.
This book is the perfect starting point for anyone who wants to get into Green Lantern
noted. years ago I tried jumping in with blackest night.

No, for someone that doesn't know jack about GL. They should start with Secret Origin, then Rebirth
can I do that out of order or does rebirth reference things only found in secret origins?
darique warren Rebirth is continuity heavy so you should know that hal jordan was dead, kyle is GL and who sinestro is
So excited for this one. Pre-Flashpoint Alan Scott was an Honorary Member of the Green Lantern Corp. Parallax tries repeatedly to corrupt Alan Scott because it doesn't understand the difference between them. "Don't give me your 'Psyche 101' bullshit. I'm dressed like a goddamned BAT.'
it took me half an hour to realize that Ethan and Ben were wearing the same shirt
At least it didn't take you four years...
@@thetizic yyuuuuup
Ethan's reaction everytime the anti-matter universe is brought up is priceless.
I like how Ethan and Ben are book-ending Sal. Wearing the same shirt and both crossing their arms in mirroring directions.
I know I wasn't reading GL back then and all but hearing and kind of reading some of Hal Jordan's Parallax stuff from back in the day made me think that DC missed a huge opportunity to make Hal Jordan a massive successful sympathetic villain ! Sleep? Who needs sleep when there's Back Issues.
Yup
brightest fucking day it finally happened the start to the Geoff Johns Green Lantern epic all began here thank you comic pop!
i am happy i sent you Green Lantern Rebirth for the package i sent you. the other 3 books i put in it are great reads too. hope to see those on back issues at some point. i am glad you got to share and enjoy it again.

I read this with no context and it made me immediately fall in love with GL. Now I can appreciate it even more thanks to you guys!
Geoff Johns' Green Lantern run is freaking amazing. His work is what got me into DC (that and the New 52).
So now that you have done Blackest Night, and Rebirth, I can't wait till you (hopefully) do Sinestro Corps War.
"_______ has many powers" will never get old
This is just one of those retcons that works...it's like a blue moon
Congratulations on 40,000 subscribers!
Guy's face at 37:37 is the cherry on top of this sundae.
So happy you're doing some more Green Lantern. You need to do Sinestro War after this (especially since you got it nailed to you)
*mailed
Nope, Martin Luther himself nailed it to Sal's chest
how does Tiffany never laugh out loud during these episodes? lol
This is definitely one of my favorite GL stories. I remember getting my first copy of Green Lantern signed by Geoff at WonderCon 06,first con I ever attended. Great times.
I can't wait until you guys do Flash Rebirth (2009).
Get your finger guns ready.

sal could you do the flash rebirth now?please i love how geoff jones refresh flash and all his mythos
Its weird because if you read Kyles Green Lantern and Hals Spectre.
The Guardians, Killowog, the Power Battery and Sinestro had all ,all ready returned.

28:20
I'm guessing the purging of Guy Gardner can't be shown lol
Yeah I thought I was the only one
You guys should do 52 or maybe another story with The Question in it he seems really cool and it would be interesting to hear about something he is in. Keep up the great work guys!

I've been waiting for this for so long....Praise the Highfather
Jeff Johns needs to write spider-man. 6 issues that rewrites One more day & all clone story lines.
YESSSS... This show should stream on HBO

YAY Green lantern rebirth with Back issues awesome also Congrats with 40,000 Subscribers
I still think it was better when batman punched guy, pure gold!
This is what I've been waiting for all day!

Facts
a lot of green ink was spilled in the creation of this
Aaaand now I like green lantern.
Great timing! Just finished reading this!
you guys rock and always keep me entertained through the whole video, thx and have a great day.
Marvel's Cyclops needs a Green Lantern Rebirth Treatment
No, we... I mean Marvel can't do that! Xmen suck, it is all about Inhumans!
Ain't that the truth.
Let's be honest, there's no amount of retconning in the world that could possibly undo the mess of continuity for Cyclops :P
You need to do Superman - Secret Origins by Johns and Frank
I thought they were going to do batman/Captain America crossover. I was really looking forward to it.
I've been waiting for this finally thx guys now I'm gonna go on to enjoy that video
best part is at 10:52 when sal does sinestros omega beam noise
9:50 guy is 2814.2 and john is 2814.3
The destruction of Coast City was actually depicted in Superman 80, and an issue of Green Lantern (46) tied into Reign of the Superman.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeees!!!!! More Green Lantern :D I just freaking loved this book.
So nobodies gonna mention Orson Welles from The Critic or Mrs. Pell's delicious fish sticks
Yes, always!
Do you like fish sticks?
They're even better raw
I'm loving rebirth
this was my first green lantern comic I read
i cant believe you didnt mention guy gardeners lantern bar on Oa
Ohhhh yeaaaah...
Does this mean you guys are going to do the Whole Geoff Johns Green lantern run?
Yes it finally happened
(In the Rock's Voice) FINALLY.
Sinestro Corps War next!!!
I watch Comic Pop at work. Shhhhh don't you tell no one nothing.
Great Episode as always.
lol, I never noticed Guy Gardner looking at Hal knock Batman out in the image at 37:35.
For those who didn't read Justice League back in the day, that's a call-back to this.

women in the refrigerator trope was basically invented with Gwen Stacy. Green Lantern just coined the term.

It would appear your response was marked as spam or something.

Yeah, while I would say Rebirth mostly avoided this pitfall, but later on it seems that hal is the only lantern who matters. espically since his whole thing is questioning authority and overcoming, but with guy, Kyle, and John all mostly learning the same lessons alot is taken away from that.
Guy opened a bar on Oa
