Do you ever wonder if Jack Kirby wasn't just messing with Stan? Deliberately trying to draw the craziest stuff, thinking there's no way he could come up with text for it?
Fun Fact about the creation of the Silver Surfer: the story goes that Jack called up Stan and said "Look, I'm tired of drawing spaceships. Can you come up with something else?" and Stan answered "How about a surfboard?" ... That's all they needed back then, I guess.
This is what I love about the actual origins of major characters / franchises. TMNT even started out as a joke about the state of comic story writing at the time.
The Lovecraftian horror aspect of this story Sal talks about is one of those interesting things that happen a lot from the comics in this era where the readers actually add more depth to a story than was probably intended, then later when those readers become story-tellers they make comics which incorporate and retroactively make stories that are much more interesting.
60's Marvel and Eldritch horrors shouldn’t go together, but it does when you know how to do it. Somehow, these guys knew how to do it without fully knowing.
"I thought you were crazy to say you would consume the planet, Galactus. But now I can see your nuts." Still. Making a package just so people would see it. Such a power move.
Johnny Storm being traumatized by going through different dimensions to get the Ultimate Nullifier was pretty dark. Also Kirby's art still stands up, its a classic. Love this story and have been a FF fan since I was a kid.
Yeah when I first read the story I was completely floored by Johnny repeating "we're just like ants!" Over and over again when he returns. It was about as horrifically lovecraftian as I've ever seen a Marvel comic get.
Torbin Ray sounds like a hip 90’s version of Silver Surfer that eventually gets reduced to obscure character you hear about on a 10 Ten Marvel Characters you’ve probably never heard of.
@@dinosaurusmaximus8506 theres also a version of him from a group shot in the commercial - and it will be sold nowhere, but somehow its available on Ebay.
What amazes me is right after this story is FF #51 where they just do a character study of the Thing that is very haunting. Giant cosmic story, turn on a time to to a personal tale.
Ethan's point about Galactus' G changing depending on who's observing him actually has precident, there's another comic that establishes he looks totally different depending on the race he's visiting though I'm sure that was thrown out long ago now
Seriously one of my favorite episodes. There is something so interesting about seeing the inception of so many characters and ideas in a hilarious retelling. I especially love the Stan and Jack dynamic you pepper throughout the episode.
44:00 You know those carnival games where there's a twisted piece of metal that's slowly spinning around, and you have to get the metal pipe or pair of tongs through the twisted piece of metal without touching the sides and setting the buzzer off? That's what this part reminds me of. XD
I love how stories are so open to interpretation that depending on your life experience, you can add so many more layers that are actually there in the story and those people will go on in the future to add those motives and deepen it. The marvel method is like the basis of the universe so I thank it for that. Something lovecraftian but also kinda funny about how galactus has just traveled a couple hours to try this new dish and the ingredients are like biting him
Such a classic story. I really hope this Galactus story arc end up adapt in the MCU eventually (maybe in Silver Surfer movie, with the whole story been told by the Surfer perspective as he learn about the earth heroes and is inspire by them to fight against Galactus).
Holy crap, you are doing the Galactus Trilogy!!! :) As a suggestion, maybe do Back Issues for other iconic Marvel Comics stories you haven't done yet, like Death Of Jean DeWolff, This Man This Monster, etc.
Hey Sal, Ethan and Ben. Have you thought about doing a Back Issues on Saga of The Swamp Thing? If so, I hope we see it soon. Keep up the great content!
Norinn rad is the silver surfer. Norman Osborn is the green goblin. Tchalla tchacka is the black panther. Valentin shatalov is the crimson dynamo. Prince is..... purple rain.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the first time ComicPOP has covered a Stan Lee story. I hope they do more in the future (particularly with Spider-Man).
Nevermind I was half wrong!!! They did a dramatic comic of Sal reading a snippet of Spider-Man no more... I confused it for a full episode of back issues I guess lol
7:30 in the 2000s fantastic four cartoon they actually did spray paint a blue four onto Ben’s chest. Also he has to be orange because if he’s not that means Johnny is the only one who is orange
Great show. I thought the whole "Lockjaw was really a human was a joke that Quicksilver played on the Thing". Also everyone knows Galactus isn't real, it's just one of those famous 60's publicity stunts we hear about from the bystanders.
This episode is fantastic! Can you do the Alan Moore story about the origin of Darkseid? With Uxas and his family and whatnot? It’s in that collection with “whatever happened to the man of tomorrow?”
53:44 The Ultimate Nullifier was created by the Watcher Emnu when the Prosilicans began to invade other planets using technology given to them by the Watchers.
Some random mook: Jumpin' juniper berries! It's Jalactus! Galactus: That's not my name, kill that guy! *Silver Surfer blasts the mook with the Power Cosmic*
If I learned the Apocalypse was coming, and it was a giant techno-gladiator wearing his initial on his costume like some kind of pro wrestler, I'd probably turn into the Joker...
Buy the Fantastic Four: The Coming of Galactus! amzn.to/49ou3YI
I like to think that Galactus isn't evil, he's just really annoyed that he drove 4 hours to try this pizza and now the toppings are shanking him

More like the Watcher has brownies in the fridge and told Galactus not to eat them because he needs them for his daughter's bake sale
I mean that is pretty much the canon explanation for galactus lol
Galactus meeting Frank Castle:
"We named the DOG the punisher"
"His costume is his horrible, disfigured body."

Do you ever wonder if Jack Kirby wasn't just messing with Stan? Deliberately trying to draw the craziest stuff, thinking there's no way he could come up with text for it?
His DC stuff?
Reed to Galactus: What does the G stand for?
Galactus: It's not a G. On my planet it stands for hope. "Hope I get to eat a planet today"
Fun Fact about the creation of the Silver Surfer: the story goes that Jack called up Stan and said "Look, I'm tired of drawing spaceships. Can you come up with something else?" and Stan answered "How about a surfboard?"

Sometimes the best ideas come with the simplest reasons.
This is what I love about the actual origins of major characters / franchises. TMNT even started out as a joke about the state of comic story writing at the time.
Jack: "That's actually a pretty rad idea!"
Stan: "Radd, you say..."

Galactus' original costume... Oh boy. What is Black Winter makes him wear it. "Ah, my herald... Where's your Robin costume?"
Bruh if that Black Winter actually does that imma gonna die😂😂😂
This is why Galactus betrayed him
That's the real reason Black Winter hunted him down.
Torbin Ray sounds like a hip 90’s version of Silver Surfer that eventually gets reduced to obscure character you hear about on a 10 Ten Marvel Characters you’ve probably never heard of.
And even though he was never in a cartoon he still got a figure released in the toy line for the cartoon.
@@dinosaurusmaximus8506 theres also a version of him from a group shot in the commercial - and it will be sold nowhere, but somehow its available on Ebay.
Captain Vimes he also had an early 90s-2000s obscure cartoon show
Gotta say Sal does a decent Stan Lee Impersonation!!😂
If I've learned something from this channel is that Sal is great at impersonations in general.
I've always felt like the lone FF fan under 40, so happy to see this in my feed this morning.
Same with being a moon knight fan brother
FF Fans unite, my man!
Same.....
I love the FF and im under 20!
I didn't love the FF until just a couple of years ago but now they're my favorite characters in all of comics
Anybody remember Marvels with Alex Ross interpretation of this story. It was so sad and terrifying.
What amazes me is right after this story is FF #51 where they just do a character study of the Thing that is very haunting. Giant cosmic story, turn on a time to to a personal tale.
4:40 I think Ben was thinking of Tomar Re from the Green Lanterns. Its the weird alien beak.... humanoid who couldn't save Krypton
He also has a fin mohawk.
I knew that name sounded so familiar and they literally talked about that character before but kept missing the connection.
Torbin Ray was Galactus' first herald from Norrin's planet, he was... "The Chartreuse Shuffler!"
This would totally be an 8-12 part event nowadays. Probably delayed a few months.
There'd be tie ins too and it would be so bad
There would be continuity errors too, and lots and lots of fill-in artists, and inkers.
You struck gold with this silver! I'm gonna get him bronzed😄😂
I just realized this. The floating heads from Rick and Morty that scream, "Show Me What You've Got" are basically Galactus.
Torbin Ray would become the Chrome Surfer, or Stainless Steel Surfer.
The Chrome Charioteer, perhaps.
The Platinum Paratrooper, if I may interject
The Burgundy Bicyclist
@@InternalOptimal
Silicone cyclist?
If I saw this before my last son was born, he would have been Torbin Rey
Ahh... We're going classic today!
Ethan's point about Galactus' G changing depending on who's observing him actually has precident, there's another comic that establishes he looks totally different depending on the race he's visiting
though I'm sure that was thrown out long ago now
It’s still a neat idea.
I'm pretty sure that idea is still around. I believe it was referenced in Donny Cates Thor
Read a beta ray bill comic where Galactus turned into the image of what bill's people believe their devil looks like just to f**k with them.
Galactus and Silver Surfer are a couple of my favorite comic characters.
“Torbin Ray?”- Ben
“Norrin Radd”.- Sal
I can’t breathe!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
27:25 ...straight comedy !!! " C" for Christmas! , " " It means DOOM !" , Thank you guys I needed that laugh !
Oh, a Marvel Classic today. Thank you ComicPOP.
Seriously one of my favorite episodes. There is something so interesting about seeing the inception of so many characters and ideas in a hilarious retelling. I especially love the Stan and Jack dynamic you pepper throughout the episode.
Is it just me, or are you guys having exponentially more fun with each new episode
That green/red Galactus looks like a cereal mascot
I absolutely love the Stan and Jack conversations. Its so amazing! Meteors? Again Jack? I'm going to call that out.
44:00 You know those carnival games where there's a twisted piece of metal that's slowly spinning around, and you have to get the metal pipe or pair of tongs through the twisted piece of metal without touching the sides and setting the buzzer off? That's what this part reminds me of. XD
Please do more silver age books like this, this is wonderful
It’s good to see you cover a classic. I’d like to see more of these!
I DONT KNOW HOW WELL THIS EPISODE WILL DO BUT MAN IM SO HAPPY YOU DID IT
The Punisher = the original Cyber Frog
I love the story (possibly apocryphal) that Stan's pitch to Jack for this was "have them fight God"
Torbinn Ray aka the Gold Glider. 😂
Somewhere on our Earth 2.
Torbinn Ray Gold Glider vs Lisa Snart Golden Glider?
Such a classic story. My most prized possessions are these three issues.
I love how fascinated Ethan is by the orange argument
Always like when you guys do these classics, the banter on the datedness of the issue is always hilarious.
oh I get it, Silver Surfers last name "Radd" is a reference to the common Surfing slang of Radical
I've read the story for years but this was the best version ever! Vintage Comic Pop. And PLEASE BUILD ON

You could say this is a long time coming
Such a classic story. I really hope this Galactus story arc end up adapt in the MCU eventually (maybe in Silver Surfer movie, with the whole story been told by the Surfer perspective as he learn about the earth heroes and is inspire by them to fight against Galactus).
I like that Galactus isn't pure evil, he's just an almighty idiot.
I think this is the back issues video I’ve rewatched the most
Holy crap, you are doing the Galactus Trilogy!!! :) As a suggestion, maybe do Back Issues for other iconic Marvel Comics stories you haven't done yet, like Death Of Jean DeWolff, This Man This Monster, etc.
They’ve done both.
This is one of my favorite episodes of Back Issues ever❤️ It’s so entertaining & funny🤣🤣🤣
Torbin Ray was once a botanist on a distant planet now he is Gorescreach the newest herald of Galactus
Galactus' Refrigerator is canon now! 😁
How does this video not have 100k views, you all are freaking hilarious?
I forgot to mention the first time I watched this video, but the damsel in destress pose that Ethan mad in the thumbnail is hilarious
Hey Sal, Ethan and Ben. Have you thought about doing a Back Issues on Saga of The Swamp Thing? If so, I hope we see it soon. Keep up the great content!

Torban ray=noran rads older cousin who goes by the golden glider
I now want to see Cosmic Ghost Rider vs "The Punisher".😂
Frank: But Galan, I thought I was your best friend.
Tony Jay voiced Galactus in the 1994 FF cartoon- Best version ever.
If it's any consultation it was dry and tastless. Lmao!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the first time ComicPOP has covered a Stan Lee story. I hope they do more in the future (particularly with Spider-Man).
I know they’ve done “Spider Man No More” so there’s that one at least

Overly Helpful Uatu sounds like a great idea for a bit in a Marvel comedy story. Like a Deadpool show or something.
I thought Torbin Ray was the entity playing the opening tune to herald the arrival of the Back Issues episode.
