    Wonderful. After deciding to attempt reupholstering my own sofa seat cushions, I searched for a video that was accessible, easy to understand and follow (I'm a man) and not hosted by somebody who droned on or shouted dictatorially. Yours was by far the best one. Thank you x

    I'm so glad you're taking the leap to fix it yourself. Sometimes the scariest part is being afraid you'll mess it up. I decided before I did mine that after what my 5 year old had done to my sofa, nothing could make it worse!

    I actually used this video to make a couch for my dog from an old baby bed. I can't believe I actually did it myself. It did take me two days since I have never used a sowing machine before .... but it looks so fabulous!

    Thank you, I don't have small children, just a small dog that loves to sleep on my sofa. The sofa is in prefect condition just need to be recovered. I found your technique is cheap and easy to follow. Thank you so much because I will be recovering my couch and large chairs soon.

    Figuring about 10% of the views of this video actually followed through and a $750 average new couch price. This video has saved people approximately $23 million dollars. Well done.

    Oh my gosh!!! Thank you for this great tutorial...I tried watching so many others and they literally either put me to sleep or completely discouraged me from trying to fix my gross cushions! Lol
    Finally a video for the everyday person!!!! You're the best!!!!

      Ahhhh! best compliment ever. I took a different approach. The homemaker approach haha! For people who just want it to look nicer without investing in a bunch of fancy tools. I'm sure the professional upholstery people aren't wowed by my unorthodox techniques :-)

    I'm so proud of you for taking the crafty leap! That's a great idea to turn an old baby bed into a pet bed.

  • @modernhomemakers
    @modernhomemakers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good question! That would probably work for a lot of people, but I have little kids who are constantly taking the cushions on and off to "build" things. My 6 year old has a scar from a "professionally" upholstered sofa in the basement where the tack strip in the back started to come apart. I didn't want any metal left when I was done!

    I'm so glad my video was helpful. Thanks to the wear and tear of time and destructive children I'm getting ready to make a part 2 video and tackle another section of my old couch!

    What an economical way to reupholster! Fabric is sooooo expensive, that if you paid to have it professionally reupholstered, it would cost more than getting a new sofa. I like this idea. However, my kids love flipping over the cushions and making forts, and I don't know if I could get over seeing the ugly side! LOL. But, considering the cheap cost of this, I think it's an excellent idea! Thanks for sharing!

  • @modernhomemakers
    @modernhomemakers  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is a nice feeling to know that it doesn't matter if you mess it up because you're going to toss it anyway! I'm getting ready to figure out how to do the rest of my couch so I should be making a new video on that soon. I wish you luck in your crafting :-)

    I looked for hours for a video on how to re upholster a squab for our new caravan and your video was perfect!!! I was considering taking it to an upholster, now I think I'll give it a go myself! thanks heaps! :)

  • @modernhomemakers
    @modernhomemakers  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can do it! It's all about leaving a little extra seam allowance. You basically are cutting the fabric to fit the shape of your couch. You definitely will want to get an upholstery needle if you're doing more than just the cushions!

    @dr.groddtande4392 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @modernhomemakers
      @modernhomemakers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do it! I still don't regret it, especially since I need to save up money for more vital things like a new stove :-) You also get to pick EXACTLY what fabric you want unlike when you're at the furniture store and you have way less options.

    I bought a chaise at TJ Maxx that fits me perfect, though I never liked the fabric--pink and cream Greek geometric squares. Well the thing's dirty now with 2 dogs and I went into an upholstery store today and they said it would be $700!!! I only paid $65 for the piece of furniture. I am totally going to attempt your way!! Thank you for the tutorial! 💓

    If you go watch parts 2-6 of how to reupholster a couch I do some draping on the arm and back cushions which aren't removable. I'd suggest you think of your couch as a big present where you have to do creative fold to make it look good. Make sure to remove any rough or uneven material from the tears. That doesn't mean that you have to remove all the fabric from your couch just the parts that might poke through.

  • @modernhomemakers
    @modernhomemakers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Marie, I just replied to you on the channel page when I saw this, so excuse the repeat:
    Marie, I didn't have any experience either. The only way to get experience is to dive in and be willing to make a mistake. That's what seam rippers are for :-) Even without a perfect sewing job, you already hate your couch so at least you could enjoy fun fabric! You could start by making a pillow, look under my crafts playlist if you want to start with something easier that's still for your couch.

  • @modernhomemakers
    @modernhomemakers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    @modernhomemakers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You’re welcome! I hope it turns out great. And remember, if only one part of the couch is messed up you can buy material that complements your existing sofa and only do part of the couch. I just had the cushions done for MONTHS!

    Really like that fabric, excellent tut. Ive just inherited my mums sofa which is a handcrafted classic. She had it re-done a few years back in a "chinzy" type of fabric which is horrible in comparison to the original. Im redoing the whole thing. I'm hoping it will look amazing.

    Hi Marie I understand why you didnt do the bottoms of your cushions as they seem to have a solid board like bottom, But i remember my parents recovering our furniture as a child and by doing the bottoms you can flip the cushions over so you can ensure even wear of the them!!!

    There's a sewing pattern that might help you if you're still too afraid to try- McCalls 3278
    It basically tells you to trace your cushion and add in some extra for seam allowance. Sometimes you have to risk things going horribly wrong to learn how to sew! I've made some interesting mistakes, but then there are always slip covers haha!

    • @modernhomemakers
      @modernhomemakers  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get asked this a lot and I really do wish I'd done a better job at keeping track of the fabric purchases! I ended up going back multiple times. I think I bought 7 yards the first time, so it was at least twice that. Know that for the biggest sections you'll want to measure and make sure you have long enough pieces :-)

    I love this tutorial! I feel like I could totally do this, thanks so much!!! And I do have a pleather couch too, so this helped a bunch! I'm so ready to make my torn couch look better! :)
    I did have a question though, if that's ok! When you're stitching the fabric on the bottom part of the cushion, (the part no one sees), do you just stitch the fabric together, so you can take it off if you want, or are you stitching the fabric to the actual cushion? Thanks again!

    • @modernhomemakers
      @modernhomemakers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was stitching it closed, but you could totally treat it like a "pillow" and put a zipper casing on it if you wanted. It's all about giving yourself permission to make it better when you don't have money for a new couch :-)

    I'm in the process of reupholstering but not in the way you've done. I removed all the fabric from my sofa frame and cut the new fabric from the old pieces and stapled them on to the frame. I'm curious (as I haven't watched all the way through)-did you staple any of this? How is it holding up now that it's been a while since you posted the videos? It seems to me that it would slowly start to shift and stretch with your method as I've never seen it done the way you've done it here. I ask because I may do some more furniture in the future and wondered about this method.

    • @modernhomemakers
      @modernhomemakers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been thinking of doing an update video. It's about a year since I did it and I have rough kids bouncing and jumping on and off of the thing but overall it's held up pretty well. I do have some popped seams I need to touch up. I'm still leery of staples because they pop out too, and when they do they're dangerous :-( My 6 year old has a scar on her leg from a staple in an old couch in our basement. So know that you'll probably be doing touch ups if your furniture gets a lot of use like mine does. It still looks great though.

    I am thinking of recovering an old indoor love seat with some weather proof fabric to use outside on my patio. I don't know how to sew, one day I would like to buy a machine and learn. But for now do you think stapling the entire thing could work? I know the staples are dangerous but my son is at the age where he doesn't do much of the bouncing on furniture anymore and really since it'd be outside, I doubt he'd be sitting anyway :)
    I know you can just slap some fabric on there and staple it enough for it to stay but I don't know how to make it pretty, like the corners and the arms of the love seat where they are rounded. I'm picturing flaps and bumps, etc. I'm terrible at wrapping presents for that reason-the corners always get me. Any tips or suggestions?
    Also-I just love your fun personality. You seem so positive and happy! Your video was very inspiring! :)

    • @modernhomemakers
      @modernhomemakers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh, thanks for the wonderful comment. I think your outdoor couch project is a great idea. You have me stumped on the no sewing/other ideas thing... I'd say some sort of adhesive, but I think since it's outside that the heat would just continue to reactivate whatever glue you tried. If the staples were long enough they might work, I'm just to cheap to invest in professional re-upholstery equipment, at least for now.

    I have a very, very old sofabed and finally decided to remove the mattress and bed frame. The sofa part is in very good condition, ""however"" the cushions were supported by the the bed frame. So now it only has 4 sides but ""no"" foundation or bottom springs that a regular sofa would have. Would you have any suggestions or ideas on how to add a foundation so I can place the cushions on it? I would greatly appreciate it because it sure would be nice to have a sofa that I can sit on again. :)

      I've been wanting to dress up a frame for my girls' bedroom. It's this hideous old 80's artwork. How did you do your frame?

    • @cassandrajohnson6838
      @cassandrajohnson6838 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I try to get a smooth frame. I usually find a good one at dollar tree. I use leftover interior,or spray paint. I paint the frame then let it dry. I either draw or use a stencil for a design. For sparkle I add rhinestones and use super glue to make sure the rhinestones stick I use the super glow on ribbons, buttons, ect... I also simple school to glue to spread so the glitter would stick evenly. I sometimes go to the ups store, and have them print off a paper image or use one of my daughter's drawings. It really just depends on what your daughter wants.

    Not complaining as it will work but there is a simpler and kinda faster way. Not going into a how too as there are many that show how too on TH-cam already but it will allow you to take the fabric off the cushion and wash it. You should also be able to get zippers for couch cushions and they should not cost very much and are easy to add. Otherwise there is the slipover pillowcase style which is even easier to do. (the pillow case cover is the ones that have the opening in the center of the pillow)

    Is it okay to flip the bottom of the couch cushion over?

    How much fabric did you use for the couch

    How would you do a sectional couch that the cushions dont come off of?

  • @modernhomemakers

    What a great area to reupholster. Depending on the year of your RV I doubt you can just go buy a new couch even if you had the money. Let me know how it turns out!

    I want to do my corner sofa my mum gave me .
    It's currently beige
    But I want to do it black.
    I definitely think its going to take me forever to do lol!!!

    • @modernhomemakers
      @modernhomemakers  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does take a long time! But it looks way nicer when you're done :-) It's been a couple years and I've had to redo some popped stitches, so keep that in mind if you really hate sewing haha!

      @twissandturngarner7879 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha thank you for your reply :)
      Iv had a closer look and I reckon it will be easier than I thought!
      I can get 65/65 cushion covers for the back which is great.
      Just need to do the base and make 4 large cushion cases for the seats
      ( which I can do a puzzle approach with)
      It's just finding the material that I want now :)

    what fabric is better, and which colour should I choose if I have three kids jumping on the sofa all the time. ?
    can I add zipper to the couches. ?

    • @modernhomemakers
      @modernhomemakers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could totally add a zipper. That would allow you to take off and wash the cushion covers. I have 3 little messy and wild munchkins myself... so i recommend dark colors and or busy patterns. That helps hide the inevitable wear and tear and stains!

      +Modern Homemakers Hi, I really love the color and pattern of the fabric, where can I find it. Thanks!

    • @joannesabados6393
      @joannesabados6393 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can appreciate you trying to update your couch, however, what you did is not upholstery. It's a hot mess and the title of your video is misleading. The stitching is not going to hold up with people sitting on the couch. Your arm tucks are sloppy. You chose a beautiful fabric but didn't take the time to match the pattern. I would take the time to rename your video because what you're doing is not upholstery.

    • @modernhomemakers
      @modernhomemakers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should work the same way. Actually it might even be easier because you'll be going in to cloth instead of "pleather" :-)

    You have solved my rv dinette slip cover doldrum conundrum IF you tell me that I can actually affix the bottom with pins and not have to sew the fabric to the cushion permanently. Please say yes! lol

    • @modernhomemakers
      @modernhomemakers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could even just put staples or small nails in the bottom of the couch. No one is going to see it :-)
