  • This video is a step by step tutorial for making a boxed cushion cover. The covers can be easily removed for washing. I will show you how to measure to make a snug fitting cover with only one piece of fabric.
This isn’t a “no-sew” or a Velcro project. This is the real deal with a zipper!
Don’t be intimidated! Even if you’ve never sewn a zipper before you can do it! It’s really not that difficult. Follow every step and you’ll soon have an updated cushion. I made 6 for our vintage truck camper and we love them!
Here’s the math in case you didn’t catch it in the video.
Length plus depth plus 1 inch for seam allowance.
Width plus width plus depth plus depth plus 1 inch for seam allowance.
That will give you your final size to cut. Hope that makes sense!
Be careful if you have a directional fabric. Always prewash your fabric. Measure twice cut once. And if possible make a sample or trial to practice the first time! #seatcovers #sewing #diy

I was so nervous cutting the fabric as I bought it overseas so it was not replaceable. I had four cushions to make and followed this video step by step for each of them. They turned out perfectly! Other videos speeding through the process only make it daunting, stressful and confusing. Thank you so much for your clear, calm and precise instructions. I am thrilled!

it's easier to sew the zipper on before sewing the corners .... it makes it easier then you turn the cover inside out and sew the corners you'll have your cover boxed in ..

Is there any way you can help me on the side part. After I sewed the zipper on and it's time to sew down the sides before doing the last 2 box corners is where I keep messing up. For some reason I sew down the side and then the zipper when I flip the cover right side out is messed up. Where the start or end of the zipper should be on the sides that's where I'm having issues. Not sure if I'm not sewing at the right spot or what I'm doing wrong. The video says sew from the zipper down the side but that's the only part of the video where it's not clearly shown where to start sewing.

Should work - let me know if its still not clear and I'll try to explain it better. Good luck

I don't know if this young lady is still doing any TH-cam tutorials, but she does a very good job. You should see the nightmare I just went through trying to make covers for my tiny cushions! What a horrendous joke. I wish I had found this video first. Granted, I wasn't attempting to put in a zipper. I did an envelope cover the first time and I did it on my serger and didn't follow any directions. I tried to Wing it. I won't do that again. I tried to make another one on my regular sewing machine and now I have the cushion in the cover but I have one end wide open. Yes, I'm an older fart but I'm a new person to sewing. Sewing isn't for the faint of heart, I'm learning. Haha. Thanks again, young lady, for educating this old lady. Well done.

This was the most clear explanation of how to measure and cut out the corners for the box corner. First time upholsterer here, so was really anxious about wrecking expensive fabric. I made mine without zips, as I was using heavyweight fire retardant sofa style fabric, and they won't be taken off to wash, so hand sewed the last side where the zipper would be. Thank you for posting the tutorial.

I agree the math is not overwhelming. Some videos tell you to use a calculator on their system which all seemed like greek to me. I was starting to feel discouraged. I'm hoping to start this reupholstering project within the next two weeks. I'm going in with so much more confidence.

I have watched soooo many videos on how to make a box cushion and this is the only one that is clear and straightforward. I appreciate your time in explaining exactly how to make this cushion. I am not an expert sewer, but I have sewed for over 50 years, just simple projects. I am saving this tutorial and thankfully make the box cushions I have been needing. Thank you so much for making this video.

Hey darl.. All the way from South Africa.. Just to let you know, as a seamstress.. Sometimes my brain doesn't work out the 3D and you explained the method of getting your measurements so well... I got it first time.. In fact, just to make sure I followed... I paused and played several times.. Just a massively big thank you for helping me get my yoga cushions done for my client.. Hopefully she will be syked to see the effort I put it😎💐😇👏💚 thank you again.. Be blessed.. Keep doing the good works 💐🎊👍🙏👌💞

In addition to loving the production value of this video (camera, editing, audio, music!) the presentation was so easy to follow. I am still a bit overwhelmed with all the details but like another viewer said, if I follow it step by step, maybe it will turn out just right. I also appreciate that "perfection" was not necessary. This was a joy to watch and now, wish me luck!

I bought a futon couch for extra sleep space for guests. It's long and the legs are so short you feel like you're getting up off the floor every time you stand up. I decided to give it height by adding a 4" cushion. Got the foam, got the fabric, watched this video and now I have a cute futon cushion that "raises" my futon seat to a more normal height. Thanks for an easy to follow tutorial.

Your video was so fantastic, really FANTASTIC. I have found it difficult to find people like yourself who like to tackle jobs in their home, like sewing but don’t need or want to be professional with professional equipment and technical methods because having to learn the “ technical correct way” is too time consuming for our task, as it make be a one off! Your end result was perfect and your methods were just what I was looking for. Thank you so much, you were FANTASTIC 🌸

😂😂😂LOL So funny! When I wanted to learn how to play the violin, someone mention start like you are a first grader, and buy instructional software or books on that level and learn step by step like a 1 st grader would learn. Really makes a difference and takes all the frustration out of anything you are learning . Why go through all the frustration when you can start anything from the beginning !👍👍👍

I am ready to cover the cushions for my deck furniture and have been watching all the tutorials. I have been struggling with how I want to insert the zippers and this tutorial is the ticket! I am fairly experienced and have made covered and zippered cushions before but it's been awhile and I needed a refresher. Your video was so straightforward and easy to understand and I am ready to crank out 8 cushions now.
