    For all those who may not know, calculating percentages for tips is really easy! All you do is move the decimal over once to the left and that's your 10 percent (I.e. 10 percent of say $23 is $2.30) and if you wanted to figure out what 20 percent is in order to tip someone, you just double that (10%+10%=20% , so you just add $2.30+$2.30 which equals $4.60)
    Quick and easy!

      +Fly me to the Moon O_O I live in California as well and I have never known anyone to tip less than 15% unless the service was poor. Most would say 20% pretty is standard and 10% just seems insulting in the majority of situations.

    When I got my first tattoo I brought a book with me to have something to do. I picked it up and started reading about an hour in and I managed to concentrate for like 30 min before I dropped it. Afterwards my tattoo artist told me he was impressed I managed to focus that long. Apparently a lot of first-timers bring books or stuff like that, but almost no one is able to focus on them haha. He also told me he tried watching family guy once when he got tattooed, but he couldn't even focus on that. I guess it's the stress on your body that makes your brain all mushy and you can't concentrate on anything ^^

    1. I always make sure to have music with me. If the store has music playing I might just listen to theirs. I like to sort of do a musical meditation(can help during the more painful parts)
    2. Always have cash on me to pay(most places I go to prefer cash)
    3. Have a drink that can replace the sugars in my body.
    4. When getting work on my arms, a sleeveless shirt(running shirt or basketball jersey). Also something I can pull over myself and wear one arm and let the other side protect the tattoo from too much sun exposure(zip-up hoodie or a baseball jersey).
    5. A positive attitude. If my artist talks to me and respond like a grinch then it could put him/her in a bad mood and then reflect on the tattoo itself. Being friendly will make the artist wants to do the tattoo well.
    That's my Top 5

  • @PippiGlockenCake

    I think you're a tattoo artists dream client. You think about everything.
    I like to bring ; cold hard cash for the same reason you do...baked goods (vegan style also), water, Clif Bars, baby wipes and natural deodorant (for freshening up during bathroom breaks if needed), my ipad, iphone and chargers, valet money since we can't keep feeding a parking meter all day, a soft bulky shirt (to cuddle for awkward positions while being worked on and I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
    This series of videos are a great idea =)

    I know a lot of tattoo parlors dont allow "food or drink" but my tattoo artist.. lets me chew gum during my session. Its like a body stress reliever! I can get gnaw away the pain ahah and I always bring the brand of gum he likes and we chew gum together haha and talk about nirvana

    Never heard of a UK tattoo artist expecting to be tipped and I never have. I don't see them being given gifts either but I notice they all seem to like high-sugar snacks in my local place and they're all so nice I'm going to bake something for them next time.

    • @beautiful9512
      @beautiful9512 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +cynicat I'm not 100% sure but I think you HAVE to tip in the US, you have to tip for everything you buy. I live in France and I know people don't tip that much, it's just generous people or when the work is well done etc. Plus, in France (maybe the UK too, I don't know) the tipping price is already in the normal price

    • @Skuffy777
      @Skuffy777 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Louise In the US tax is added at the point of purchase, which is strange but that's different from tipping. In the UK service is often included in restaurants otherwise tipping 10% is normal - same for hairdressers, unless they are the salon owner. These are low paid occupations and the employee does not set the price. This makes them different from tattooists, builders, plumbers, electricians, decorators etc who set their own prices and don't expect to be tipped on top.

    • @pearljoslyn9947
      @pearljoslyn9947 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Louise It's not like a required thing here, but wages for people who work in the service industry are so low here, that most workers live off of tips. 20% is considered a standard tip :)

    • @ninisenior1802
      @ninisenior1802 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Louise you don't HAVE to tip in the US for cafes and restaurants and such but it's uncommon not to unless you're server was really awful

    • @beautiful9512
      @beautiful9512 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oriana Senior Oh I thought so… I've heard (at least from someone who were at an airport in Florida i think) that at the moment to pay at the restaurant, they asked her if she wanted to tip 10, 20 or 30%

    I love the idea of bringing flowers! I often find books/comics/illustrations that I think my tattoo artist would love & take those to appointments as little gifts. I also bring him things for his cats, which sounds weird now that I'm typing it... But he's in love with his cats. :)

    I think a really good thing to bring is a stress ball or something like that. I typically dont need it during the beginning but when you get down to the last bit and youre feeling the pain, having the stress ball takes my mind off of it cause I can just squeeze the hell out of it.

    Headphones and great playlist! Something to concentrate on besides the pain or irritation. I also like a small stress ball to squeeze so I can just have my hand doing the tensing up and make sure the rest of my body is relaxed. And something not bring but to practice- relaxing your whole body, consciously, from head to toe every few minutes. Ask yourself, "is my face tensed up, and I shrugging my shoulders, etc", and actively let that tension go. It hurts so much more when your entire body is ramped up!!

    When you so don't relate to the tipping culture and paying with cash. Like here in Sweden I think most artists prefer if you pay with card (maybe even swish), if they insist on cash it's probably something fishy going on xD

    • @ladylonglove6740
      @ladylonglove6740 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sararedbride9728 yeah the country is pretty shit tbh. But tattoo artistry has a large gap in wage, like many professions. You can make 10k a year or make 500k. In other countries, the tip is already represented in the price of the service, which is how it should be. And because it’s not, it’s become a game of over tippers and under tippers, creating a pretty standard wage across the board anyways.

    So I got my first tattoo a few days ago and I love it. My artist was really nice and did a great job. I loved him and would definitely go back to him if I get any more tattoos. The problem is that I did not know that tipping was the custom. I didn't tip, but I feel bad and I want him to know how happy I am with what he did. Should I go back to the shop and tip him? Or would that be weird? Should I just let it go? I don't know what to do.

    And what if I’m on a super tight budge. I’ve been saving up for a tattoo for a while and am putting in my Christmas money. So I may have $200 for the tattoo, and it think that’s how much it’s going to be. I like to tip well but I’m worried I won’t have the money to tip that well

      A string bikini would probably work well.

    So glad tips are not "mandatory" in australia.15% my ass ! Since i have a forge as a hobby at home i made my tattooist a folded, engraved hilt, samurai sword because he specialises in irezumi.

    I think a twenty percent tip is standard. Two dollars for every ten dollars spent. I like to do between 20 and 30 percent.

    If you're getting your hip tattooed it's a good idea to put on a bikini instead of panties. Bring some tape and untie the side you want tattooed (only works if you have a bikini with strings on the sides), then tape the bikini to your body and you don't have to reveal your hidden treasures. Just a tip I got from a friend. She never thought about the fact she had to remove her panties while getting a hip tattoo and she found it really awkward to cover herself with just her hands.x)

    My sis and I go to the same shop and we've brought pizza before. It's a shop full of guys and they are always hungry and they loved it. Plus who wouldn't want free pizza xD

    I tend to be very anti social when I am getting tattooed.
    I bring my ipod (yes I have some anchient technology here) and play music really loudly. I use noise cancelling headsets so as not to bother the artist, I simply need to get to my "happy place" to be able to zone out whatever is happening.
    Oddly enough I have been considering bringing my sketch book or something (knitting needles and wool for all I care) next time, not as a way to be rude or anything, more just so that I can keep my hands and eyes busy, cause watching them do the tattoo brings the pain right back into focus for me.

    I do like to tip my artist and I don’t get those who don’t. I don’t go by an exact percentage but I average tip $60-$100 depending on the artist and what was done.

    I made peanut butter chocolate chip cookies for my artist and the tattoo studio that I went to! I had no idea it was a common practice. I just really like to make things for people. Do you happen to know your Myers Briggs type? I really think you are INFP. Bringing cookies is totally an INFP thing ot do. :)

    I feel like I've heard you answer this before, so my apologies in advance, but do you take Advil or Tylenol before you get tattooed? I've heard people say you should for your first because pain stuff but I've also heard it thins your blood so you'll typically bleed more. Opinions?

      +Allison Selman I was told by my artist to not take any pain meds until after the session is done. I think most people will simply say "Suck it up buttercup" // " If you're concerned about the pain, you aren't meant to get a tattoo." It's pretty sound advice, really.
