    Bottom line is: get the best deal for the best work you can. Don't get ripped off. Just because it costs $2000 doesn't mean it's any better than a $300 shop. Research the work.

      That being said, if you find an amazing artist who you fall in love with, don't try to get a cheaper artist to do their style

    I think it'd be a tad ridiculous to expect your artist to tattoo you for free, and they kinda shouldn't. It's their livelihood and their art, you should respect them enough to pay! Totally agree with you :3
    I've only ever been tattooed by my one artist (because he's incredible and I love his style) and have a pretty good rapport with him and the other guy at the shop. I mean, he calls me Tiny because I'm so small and we always joke about how I have less canvas space on my body! I had made an appointment and then found out I wouldn't be paid until the week after my appointment, so I went to cancel and they said "If you cancel we can't get you in for at least another two months, keep the appointment and just pay us back when you can. We know you're good for it, you're a repeat customer and it's totally cool!" Stuff like that definitely is what having a good relationship with your artist is about, not whether you get tatted for free!
    P.s. I love this series, it's fab

    You are a saint! Many people contact me for my drawings and very often it is to design a tattoo, but they turn me down everytime I have to tell them I can't work for free :( even if I could afford to do than, it wouldn't be fair to other artists who would then be expected not to get paid. I really love when I see a person who really appreciate an artist's work! Thank you so much for supporting the community 💕

      damn right! I got a wrist tattoo for $100 and he did an amazing job with all the details. I've gotten told by various people that my tattoo was overpriced and they know someone who would do it for cheaper, and my response is to them is always I would rather get great quality tattoos and pay whatever it takes rather than paying less and not getting the best quality work on my body for the rest of eternity.

    you gotta remember youre paying for an original work of art that the artist put alot of time into drawing up and actually putting on you. you also have to take into consideration the price for the materials.

    I started my sleeve the day I turned 18 and it was quite expensive but the artist I went to was amazing at black and grey realism. The day after I got it done I had a man approach me and ask me where I got it and how much. I didn't tell him the cost because I think it's disrespectful. He then proceeded to tell me he could have done the same thing for $200 dollars lmao

    All 20 something of my tattoos have been done by the same artist, and I have never once expected him to undercharge me for a tattoo. (granted, he almost always does), but it is always better to be surprised by paying less for a tattoo than going in with a mindset and feel like you're getting overcharged.

    It really annoys me when people grumble about the cost of a tattoo - it's an investment as it's going to be there for the rest of your life (unless you make a bad choice and need to cover it up or get it removed later). Also, the kind of people who moan about tattoo prices are the ones who'll think nothing of wasting say £100 on a night out when all they'll have to show for it is a hangover!

    I absolutly agree with you; money should'nt ever hold you back from getting what you really want and its definately better to wait and save up to get what you want than get a cheap tattoo which is not what you've imagined. Tattoos are pieces of art which you have on your body for the rest of your live and the most important thing about them is that they are supposed to make you happy and that you feel 100% satisfied with them whenever you look at them.
    I love your videos so so much and tattoo talk tuesday is definately a wonderful series which will help out a lot of people out there, huge thumbs up for that and for your Channel in general!👍🏻 you do an amazing job ☺️☺️

    I'm lucky that the person I'm being tattooed by at the moment is great at the style I want and pretty cheap compared to others (£40 an hour but idk what that is in dollars). Also I believe that you're not just paying for the tattoo but the experience. The first two tattoos I had were not enjoyable experiences for me because I didn't have the right artist. I just went to the place where I'd been getting pierced for years. Now I've found the person who does amazing work and is also a really lovely person to hang out with for a few hours and chat with.

I'm talking from a perspective of a tattoo apprentice soon to become licensed. I agree with what you were saying. I got a small tattoo this past spring though it was a small one, it is a finished one. Now when I got it, I did see a sign that said $20, of course a tattoo that is cheap isn't going to look good but because I knew what I wanted I got the piece and it looked exactly like what I wanted. My loyalty to my artist is still there but this guy I knew had skills so it was worth it.

    I got offended when somebody said that my arms together if I get sleeves on both of them would be $5000. This person was basically telling me I was rich or something, when actually I do live on the income but I choose to get tattooed. I do my tattoos in steps because of my pain tolerance which is two hours max and how much I will pay for those two hours but I make sure to go back and book an appointment because I cannot handle unfinished tattoos.

    This is such a good video! Tattoos are investments that are permanent. You don't want to cheap out on that. People pay millions for paintings and other forms of art, so the prices artists take for tattoos are quite bleak in comparison to that. You're paying for their creativity, which in reality is invaluable. So don't cheap out on tattoos, they're forever.

  • @VampireGirl1294

    Where I live there is a tattoo artist whose been tattooing me since I was 18.
    She's really cool and she asks me what I can pay and we usually can meet in the middle about the costs.
    It took 3 sessions to finish my upper sleeve and each time I would let her know what I could pay that day and come back for the rest...because some days we would be too tired to go on.
    But she's really cool and she does such beautiful work. :)
    Then there's this other really well known artist another town over, who charges $100 an hour!
    But they do a good job and all their artists are in high demand most of the time. I got a tattoo from one of their good artists and he now has his own shop in a different state. :D

    I have a relatively quick question about talking to a tattoo artist ahead of time (not quick to write, but relatively quick to answer, I think). I know which artist I would like to do my back tattoo and a concept for what I want (I have reference pictures and a layout in my head), but I don't want to get the tattoo until next summer (budget/time constraints + location). The artist has forms up for this summer and the fall, but not for beyond then (which I don't think is unreasonable). Would it be okay to start talking to them now about the tattoo I want? I want to make sure they can do it in the way I want because if they can't I would need to find another artist and I know I want to get the tattoo next summer, but I don't want to bother them too far in advance...

    This was a great video to watch especially the part about princing because I live in Europe (sunny Lisbon) and the pricing for tattoos over here is (almost) nothing like you described. For starters we don't pay for hour, but for piece. Obviously there is a relation between those two aspects but nobody here charges per hour specifically. And the minimum per piece (for a really small thing) is usually 50€ / 60€..
    I have 2 big ones on my thighs that I did at the convention with a german artist that I love and that was the first time I was paying per hour and it made me kinda nervous 'cause I had an estimate amount of time on my mind, but I wasn't really sure if it would be like it.
    Anyways, just wanted to add something to the discussion seeing we come from 2 different places :)
    Keep up the cool videos, kid :D

    I always ask my artists upfront about how much for a piece, or at least a ball park. I never try getting a deal though, and I always tip well to show appreciation. I see tattoos/tattooing as an art and I love many forms of art. I like them and I want to help them maintain a living for doing me the favor of putting art on me. I always make sure I have enough for the tattoo and and extra hundred for a tip. Plus I take pride in my tattoos. I always turn people down who give me low prices because it shows right off the bat that they probably suck and thats why they’re not in a shop. My artists are just good people too. They’ve always been great to me and my fiancée and they’re down to earth, so we try to help them keep doing this as their part time job, so I can keep having them work on me. But long rant aside, a higher price usually means higher quality, so if my artists say a piece is 600 then 600 it is.

    I am in desperate need of help in finding an artist. How do you go about looking for artist, and finding what's best? I have two very small tattoos, but now I want to start working on a sleeve, and would like each piece to be done by the same person for style reasons. I'm hardly considered a "tattooed person", and I don't know the odds and ends of the culture, and I would love some help for getting started. ♥️♥️♥️

    I'm getting an anklet done at Hart and Huntington Niagara. Their base fee is $125, and my artist quoted me between $150-$200 in total which is quite a bit for a small tattoo, but it has fine details, and two different styles combined so it's totally worth it. Art is expensive, and truly you get what you pay for. Be sure to research shops and artists and have a tattoo style in mind to find an artist that specializes in a similar style, and read shop reviews. I chose a shop 2 hours away when I could've easily gone to a shop in walking distance from my house.

    The way my artist does it is for little pieces or to do an outline on a bigger piece he gives me an estimate before he starts tattooing and then to do the shading/coloring on bigger pieces I usually tell him at the beginning of a session I can afford to pay $400 or however much I wanna pay that day and then he'll do that much moneys worth of shading or coloring that session.

    If i want small simpleish tattoos would you recommend stick and pokes or a cheap tattoo shop?

    • @mollybeth456
      @mollybeth456 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What most people dont think about is at a shop you're also playing for the cleanliness of the tattoo and environment its in. That and all the set up are what the $50 to $80 minimums come from for simple tattoos. I promise anyone that knows anything about bloodborn pathogens and infections will without a doubt recommend a sanitary shop over a friend with a sewing needle and some rubbing alcohol. - not trying to be rude, just making a point

    My first tattoo will cost aprox. 2500 Danish Kroner which is equivlent to 355 euro or $394 USD, it is not that big but because of the details and my arm is rather large, it is more pricey. Also it will take aprox. 4 hours to make.

    what do you consider a long time to get tattooed and what's your longest tattoo sitting?

  • @carlshaw257
    @carlshaw257 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I find this really interesting because I'm from the UK and am having a full back piece. The tattooists who I'm going to has been doing this trade for about 15 years and charges £60 and hour and 2 hours is long enough for me so each 2 hour session has cost me £120.00 which according to Google is about 158.68 dollars so when you say 500+ I find that a lot. I agree that if you want quality then you have to pay for it.

      yup I would love to get my forearms tattooed but because of work I would never do it. I do have my wrist tattooed but it's small enough where I can hide it with a big bracelet if I need to. Hand tattoos are also pretty but I would never ever do that

    Does your artist tell you the price of your tattoo beforehand? Is it rude to ask? I'm getting my first tattoo soon, so I'm not too used to tattoo prices, and it won't be a small one. I'm a student so I don't have much money, so I would like to know if it would be okay for me to ask my tattoist whenever I contact her to get a reservation. Thanks! I love your videos

      +aitanasdiary Hey! From my experience, just be ready and bring cash. Depending on how big it is... overestimate. It differs with all artists, but personally with mine, I don't find out till we're done the session. Especially if it's a custom piece it will depend on color, details etc. I would definitely call and see because I called mine in September, and she didn't have a spot until January.

      +aitanasdiary i would simply ask the artist how much i should bring and he/she will say for example, bring 500 and then you wont be surprised if it turns out to be 500.
      i mean the tattoo artist is the one who wants to get paid and doesnt want you to be 200 dollars short.
      but im doing a big piece right now and i just book sessions in hours so its up to me how many hours we are going to do.
      but it all depends on the tattoo and the artist.
      but always ask before it shouldnt be a problem and if it is i would go somewhere else.

    Haven't watched the video yet, waiting for it to load, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents: in my experience it also depends on location. I live in Toronto, but I go to an artist in Kingston (my parents live there) which is a smaller city in Ontario. Whenever my Toronto friends ask me how much I paid for a tattoo they're like wtf? That's so cheap! Like my artist is "expensive" for Kingston, but artists in Toronto who've only been tattooing for a year charge the same price per hour as she does.

    can i ask a question here? you seem like you can get a tattoo on a whim. I have 2 dream tattoos one is a major one the other is a small idea. I'm very shy, so I am afraid of just walking in to a shop with my reference pics. I'm also afraid of just sending out a random email. But the shops with a layed out sites "put references pics here"--"put description here" are few and far between.
    what would be the best way to send an email request to an artist you have have met in person before?

    • @fanoftoast
      @fanoftoast 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's scary at first to walk into a new shop when you've never been tattooed, so I brought a friend and when my friends first got tattoos I went with them. Honestly, imo, going in in person is equally as good as email. Sometimes it is nicer to go in in person though because you can figure out if the tattoo artist is kind and respectful, it can be harder to determine that over email.

    Here, when you want a tattoo (like the little pieces on your arm, and leg) they charge just from how big the tattoo is.. only when its bigger, like the one on your back, they charge per hour.. i paid for example 150 euro (168 US Dollar) for a rose sized 2 - 2 inch. Minimum price here if you want for example a little thing on your fingers or something smaller than 1,2 inch you pay 50 euro's (56 US dollar) I like it :)

      Mandy Gybels where i live they price it buy the hour so it's 150$ (cad) per house and if it takes less than an half an hour it's 100$

      Mandy Gybels my tattoo shop is sorta similar. The shop minimum is $80 but then if you're getting a bigger piece it starts at $100 an hour and you go from there.
