The brake pedal reminds me of old 1970’s cruise control. You’d set it and it’d pull the gas pedal away from your foot. It was very disconcerting at first, but it only happened once when you set it. I can’t imagine chasing the brake pedal. That’s a recall and a class action waiting to happen.

    • @theyruinedyoutubeagain

Funny enough, as much as I hate the moronic idea behind it, I didn't find the break pedal to be much of an issue in real-world driving. It's still such an unexplainably idiotic thing to do though. Usually some of these weird decisions from legacy car makers are driven by the desire to not alienate their aging customer base, and make EVs more "similar" to ICE cars. In this case though, it's just a baffling choice, as no ICE car has that stupid behaviour.

I was gonna make a comment about this except I had a 2008 car that did this (Mitsubishi so the technology was probably carried over since the 80s). Always thought it was strange. But having the brake pedal push back at me, like the car is deciding for itself would not fly with me.

In regards to the Hyperscreen UI layout, I've seen similar issues before....in late 90s, early 2000s. Cars started getting a lot of new functions you could control, and Ergonomics was a real issue. Then the industry seemed to follow certain standards that made sense, and get similar layouts where it counted, so you could go from car to car and quickly figure out most of the essential functions very quickly. With touchscreen controls, we are back in the Wild West, and it may take a while before auto makers figure out common sense controls that will become similar between all makes. It sucks, but give it 5-10 years. I'm still a fan of analog controls for some things that don't require any eye contact

12:52 Even when in radar cruise and slowing down, a 2022 Acura RDX (yes, i know it’s a gas car, the one in the video is electric) fixed this problem. It has a drive by wire system, so your brakes and accelerator are electronically controlled, so the brake pedal never moves when the car brakes on its own.

The brake lever moving is definitely strange, but it's hard to strike a good balance. There's gotta be some compromise between the pedal travel, the amount of force/torque it takes to push the pedal down, and the amount of braking action such that one of these doesn't match the way you'd expect it to be with exclusively friction brakes.

The brake pedal and accelerator moves on the Tesla. This is a good thing because it means that you can learn the position of where a particular speed is. It means that the system can disengage when your foot touches the pedal and for braking and acceleration, it means that when you let off that pedal, the same relative change in action of that pedal happens that would normally happen.
If the brake pedal was not depressed for example, then how would you be able to "release" it to stop braking?

  • @GL43DR

In France (I don't know about other European countries), the brake lights can only flash if you press the brake pedal, or in case of automatic emergency breaking.
It seems that Mercedes decided to have the brake pedal automatically pressed to go around the regulation, and have the rear lights to flash when regenerating energy.

Funny, I always thought making the break pedal move to the “new” mechanical breaking position makes sense. Some cars will give you no mechanical braking until you reach the “new” position and then you will get, suddenly, the brakes. New position means you depress and you immediately get the pads to work. I love it

    • @linaskricenas6629
      @linaskricenas6629 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Exactly. People could panic when they start pushing the pedal and there is no reaction (until pedal does not reach position where it is already virtually "pushed" by regeneration). For some it may seem that brakes failed and they could hit brakes right to the end which may be dangerous (especially on highway).

    • @TommyApel

That there has been my biggest problem with ev's so far, once you get into your zone and forget that you have regen on and you go damn this isn't slowing down fast enough and then you naturally apply 2x pressure but you then hit the actual breaks but now it's almost like an emergency stop kinda force which noone behind you is ready for. so yeah I think the way mercedes implemented it is way smarter.

I have the same issue with the Tesla screen….. and don’t get me started on the ergonomic/safety issue of not having the screen in front of the driver. I absolutely love your videos…. I don't own an EV yet, but I recently rented an VW ID.4 for a long road trip. I don't think the brake pedal moved, but it definitely had this intuitive/smart regen braking, and I actually loved it.
If there was a long downhill section I didn't have to worry about changing the amount of regen, or adjusting with the brake, to keep a perfect distance to the car in front. I just chose the distance I wanted, and it kept that for me by increasing or decreasing the amount of regen. But it didn't just pay attention to cars, also did it for sharp bends and it kept track of the speed limit. So if I was regening down a hill at lets say 80km/t, but then the speed limit changed to 50km/h, I didn't have to do a thing, it just applied more regen and continued at 50km/h.
As long as you have the ability to switch such smart assists on/off as you please, or override it when needed, I think they are awesome.

That way, how quickly the car slows down with say a half way pushed pedal is consistent with different levels of regeneration. It does make sense in a way. I dont think I would like it either though. One would expect the necessary brake pressure to change if you changed the regen level.
Pretty sure Mercedes is just scamming people. This car should be sold for no more than $80k.

In my manual transmission car, i have stronger engine braking at high engine speed (similar to regen), if I downshift and the engine is at 6000 RPM, it will have stronger engine braking than at 3000 RPM. If the brake pedal wiggled around based on the strength of engine braking, that would be extremely dangerous.
I'm like 95% sure the Mercedes is not regen braking. There is only one way the brake pedal moves, and that's by activating the brakes. I'm sure we will eventually hear the brakes squealing on older cars when they let off, expecting regen.

EQS SUV has much better brakes. While I test drove it, I did not notice the brake pedal moving at all, which is strange because one of my main focus during the test drive was brakes. To me it means that I will possibly not be bothered by it much. The software piece I agree is a little too touch heavy, and I hope Mercedes cleans it up. The driving experience of the car though is awesome, and the technology and comfort are better than any other electric vehicle I have tested, and that's saying something because I do agonizing research over the car I plan to buy. For me, this seemed to fit like a glove. The range numbers worry me a little though. Mercedes claims 340 miles, which was a big selling point for me, and you memtioned 260-280. We took delivery of our eqs suv this week and I have not noticed the brake pedal as an issue even on one pedal driving.
I miss our Tesla for how intuitive things were, but the eqs suv is a better car. Once we’re navigating and on our way it is better.
But if they could just be a little better at software the eqs could be a grand slam.

    Nice Video!
I feel that the sound features just appeared and got too less attention, since I think it is one of the most interesting features that happened in the car industry in the last 10 years.
The fact you can change what your car sounds in the inside while you are accelerating and braking has to be insanely fun.
Also saw a video of an AMG EV which makes sounds that sound like a transformer on the outside when you lock or unlock it.
What a time to be alive, :D would love to play with those feature in person.
But yes, the moving brake pedal is weird. Would be a no go for me when I would buy a car.

I can see the utility in having the brake pedal move. Like in regen mode u actually have to calibrate to how strong the regen is and sometimes it’s jolty and irritating. Having a feedback with the amount of braking power available taking regen into consideration is actually pretty neat, especially in chauffeur driven scenarios. The only contention should be the ability to switch it on and off in the settings. Considering the response to this, Mercedes will push that in an ota really soon.

Great video. Can you do some videos that really go in-depth on the infotainment tech only? For example, while the MBUX may not be for you, an in-depth of the Zero Layer aspect of MBUX is something that I rarely see in reviews and am very interested in. There is a vision that is being lost to many reviewers I feel as most don’t spend enough time with the car for it to learn your habits and thus customize the screen automatically for you as it was built to do. At the end of the day, just like a PC or Mac, most people use very little of the true capabilities of the machine because of their routines and habits. The intelligent learning in MBUX is envisioned to do that for you without you needing a software engineering degree to set up your car. Honourable mention should also go to the gesture controls in the car, that would be an interesting in-depth tech video.

    • @sam0711er
      @sam0711er ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hi! Ex-Mercedes designer here who worked on the Zero Layer tiles and the settings. You're right, the idea is that MBUX learns your behavior and habits over time and shows tiles at the bottom that are relevant to you in the moment depending on where you go, what you do, who is in the car (that's why you have profiles). I assume (not sure if true?) Marques uses Android Auto most of the time instead of MBUX itself (I understand why… HERE Maps suck imo), and because he didn't have a personalized profile I assume he missed out on the intelligence behind the system. It's actually pretty smart when it gets the opportunity to learn more about you. After some time, you don't necessarily have to enter a certain app again as what you're trying to do will show up as a Zero Layer tile at the bottom proactively. The problem is just that Android Auto and CarPlay are completely autonomous systems and MBUX can not learn about a user's behavior when they only stick to those solutions.
I know that the settings UI is not optimal, but that's just caused by a HUGE amount of features (which Marques mentioned in his vid) which all often need some sort of setting. Believe me, this is already a much nicer version of settings than what it used to be! :D

Nice vid, thanks. I am sure someone might have mentioned it, but just in case: My Kona EV also realizes that when the driver is leaving the car and his/her smart phone ist still on the charging pad - and then chimes and gives a text message. Again: Marques should test-drive the Kona - for an early EV (Hyundae just annouced its 3rd version if you count the facelift from last year) and as a car which was designed for different drive-trains, it does a lot of things right :) Also, the absence of the pedal driving is a no-no - we also drive a Smart EV (one from the time when Smart was a Mercedes brand) and it also got that non-optional adaptive regenerative braking. Don‘t like it, too. :)

Really great review. I like the piece about the braking. This would personally concern me too, for the exact same reason. When braking, you can't be second-guessing yourself. I am not a big fan of the exterior styling of this car. It doesn't look like a 130k car. The fact that theres no frunk is annoying. Interior does look pretty nice tho! Why are car manufacturers moving away from quick access buttons!?? These are useful for drivers.

  • @doug339

I understand that vehicles are getting more expensive, that this is a Mercedes, and that EV's also carry a price premium. But when I heard the $130k price tag, I was pretty shocked. Usually without even knowing the model, you can tell if something is a $100k+ Mercedes/BMW/Audi by how it looks. This thing looks like a mass market model Mercedes (from the exterior and a lot of the interior) with a max sticker of about $80k with every feature.

The new VW Golf does the same thing with the brake pedal when using the adaptive cruise. The first time I used it I went to hover my foot over the pedal as a just-in-case and once I felt the pedal move away from me I panicked and ended up slamming on the brakes.
