  • The first Tesla Supercharger that has received federal funding went live in Maine on April 3rd, 2024. Under NEVI (National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) Formula Program requirements, fast charge stations receiving these funds must deliver a continuous 150 kW power level and support output voltages between 250 to 920 VDC.
    Take a trip with us up to Rockland, ME to see how Tesla's latest V4 dispensers fare, what kind of power cabinets have been installed, and why Tesla locations will provide a notably different experience for drivers of 800V architecture EVs like our Hyundai IONIQ 5, compared to almost every other NEVI-funded location.

    I love the Supercharger network, but this should not be allowed. At a minimum, there should be a requirement that these sites are upgraded to V4 cabinets as a priority over non NEVI sites. Or withhold reimbursement until they fully comply.

    Thanks for the video. I have tried the Rockland "V4 " station with my tesla. There were no non-teslas there, so I can only assume that it would work for them. The V4 "posts" are quite unique in the USA, this being the first I have ever seen, and also have credit card readers, which is atypical. [ and before anyone comment, yes, I understand that it's not really a full V4 installation.]
    The Hannaford there is a nice store, and has a public bathroom.
    Good news at the Augusta Comfort Inn site ( kindly mentioned at 7:30 of the video). There is some evidence of construction there today (June 1), while there was zero activity there when I drove by two weeks ago. I hope that I am not misreading this, and that there really is progress being made.
    That is a key location locally, with a lot of traffic turning off I-95 at exit 112-B, to head up Rt 27 to Belgrade Lakes, Farmington, and Maine ski destinations. Kudos to tesla for proceeding with that new, key installation.

    97kW on a Supercharger for the E-GMP cars is right at the edge between blazing slow and painfully fast. It's a rare feat to have a Tesla Supercharger be slower than a 200A paired Chargepoint CPE250, yet here we are.

    • @plugandplayEV
      @plugandplayEV  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      There are quite a few paired CPE250s serving central Maine. As it stands, they remain a better option for EGMP vehicles than this location or the planned Augusta Supercharger (if it happens at all). Approaching 18 months since Tesla installed the first V4 posts in Europe, it's disappointing that they couldn't get the 1000V backend in place by now. If only for the Cybertruck, even if they don't give a fig for other models 🤷‍♂️

    Great to see your video. Oddly I spoke with Tesla Supercharging Dept. About 3 Weeks ago on need for Chargers on US Route 1 for Coastal Maine especially Camden, Rockport and Booth Bay. The Rep looked at the Map and thought it was a good idea but it is odd to think he didn’t know about this one as ready or coming soon.
    Maine is coming along nicely. New Hampshire needs DC fast chargers in Western Part of the State and major resort areas too.

      Strange, thanks for the insight though. This one has been on the map for about nine months and in the ground for five, so it should be pretty well known to Tesla employees.
      NH has sites slated for the White Mountains and East for NEVI round 1. It won't fill in all the gaps and the state is definitely behind its neighbors on DCFC, but there's some light at the end of the tunnel.

    I’m going to guess that 900V charger design is very difficult for some reason.
    It’s wild that Tesla still doesn’t have a completed V4 design despite Elon’s off the cuff comments back in 2016 about 350kW being “child’s play” when discussing other charger makers plans (Ionity/EA).
    It should have been on the design docket back then but perhaps Elon’s 400V stubbornness forbade those developments for the design team for a very long time (basically before Cybertruck and NACS).

    • @plugandplayEV
      @plugandplayEV  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, it's surprising that higher voltage hasn't been prioritized... or at least timed to arrive with the Cybertruck. If it was only going to benefit other manufacturers I suppose I can see the reason to put it on the backburner. But when Superchargers don't serve Tesla's own models as well as other providers, that's an odd place to be.

  • @CheddarKungPao
    @CheddarKungPao 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    I do think these should have to support 800V for federal funding *however* the stations are capable of 350A at 400V and giving 150kW to 400V vehicles. So i do think it's fair to say these support 150kW. As you probably know you can't get 150kW due to the voltage issue and limitations of the eGMP boosting method.
    Thanks for making this video. Subscribing.

    • @Jeddin
      @Jeddin 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes, exactly. Tesla can claim that the charger is capable of delivering 150 kW and if the vehicle is not capable of accepting 150 kW that’s the vehicle manufacturer hardware issue and not a charger issue. Tesla would argue that it is not their responsibility that Hyundai onboard charging converter is capable of only 100 kW and not 150 kW Whether or not you agree with us or not the Nevi decision makers have granted Tesla fund based on this logic.

    • @plugandplayEV
      @plugandplayEV  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks for the perspective. I guess flip this on its head and say the requirement was 100 kW continuous and a site installed paired ChargePoint CPE250s. My car would be comfortably above the threshold but 400V vehicles would suffer due to the amperage limitations, maxing out around 80 kW. I'd still want the site to install ChargePoint Express units capable of delivering sufficient power to all EV models, rather than taking advantage of loopholes to save dollars and use cheaper hardware.

    • @CheddarKungPao
      @CheddarKungPao 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@plugandplayEV Yeah I agree with you totally. The NEVI rules need to explicitly say minimum 150kW (I would up this to 250kW) for both 400V and 800V vehicles.

      It's a common rate for non-Teslas but can be made cheaper on a plan at most Superchargers. Last time I checked, it was $12.99 per month to bring the cost down to around $0.40/kWh, possibly lower in some areas.

    Nice to see a cable length that reaches other EVs, but I foresee a fiasco ahead, now that E'loon has fired the Supercharger senior director and her team. He has essentially delayed, if not outright betrayed, the commitment to transition to J3400 with GM, Stellantis, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Fisker, Aptera, Lucid, Mazda, Porsche, Subaru, Volkswagen, Volvo, Polestar, Nissan, Toyota. You can find the "Magic Dock" locations that have the same CCS adapter by using the Tesla app under "Charge Your EV" or "Charge Non-Tesla". @@plugandplayEV It turns out that Rivian's native navigation system "knows about" these newer, available chargers. I suspect Ford EV's can do the same. So, the CCS vehicles that Tesla has officially "embraced" will charge automatically (plug and charge), and will show up on their dashboard Navigation screens.
      As a tesla owner, I recently helped a newbie Rivian owner get through his first Tesla charging experience, at the new Magic Dock station on rt 1 in Lynnfield Mass. So, what I know or think about the above advice is based on that single experience. I may have some of it wrong, but it seems pretty encouraging for those who shook Elon's hand early in the process (Ford and Rivian). Those who are waiting, will have to wait for the automated plg-and-charge, and also will have to wait for their dashboard NAV applications to get updated mapping data.
      For sure, Rivian owners are in good shape as of May 2024. It is unfortunate that there is NO SIGNAGE when you drive up to one of these "available chargers, to indicate any of the above. Non-Tesla owners will continue to be baffled when they have their first charging experience at a compatible Tesla Supercharger location.

    Maine’s DCFC infrastructure is pretty limited. The few ChargePoint sites scattered about have proved to be underwhelming. EVGO has managed to provide the best experiences in Westbrook, Biddeford, and Portland. EA is a complete mess in Scarborough with only two units capable of 35kw on a good day. For those with a 800V system, 70kw on a good day. But, that’s all typical of Maine being a decade behind the country.

    • @plugandplayEV
      @plugandplayEV  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      On the contrary, I've found Maine to be significantly ahead of other New England states in terms of coverage, if not power level. The Efficiency Maine chargers have taken me to Canada from south to north (Rt. 201) and south on I-95. Still some significant gaps but the plan covers those in its next stage. I also checked out EA Waterville on the way back which appears to have broken ground. When that's energized, it will be the most powerful location in the state and six stalls should be plenty to serve the EV traffic in this relatively remote region for some time.
